  • Thank you and Gav too.

  • Ok anyone own these? are they good?

    • Very good so far as PC usage goes. I was surprised!

  • +1

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but this doesn't give you real Surround Sound when used with the 360/PS3, just virtual surround sound based on 2.1 audio. The only way to do surround sound through them is via HDMI or Optical, and this system doesn't support that - only RCA.

    Just something to think about for those wanting to use this as a cheap surround sound system for their console.

      .

      You are correct.

      When you're connected to a 2-channel stereo source, it uses 5.1 virtualisation (basically rear and center speakers just echo the sound of L/R). It's not perfect but it does sound better than straight 2.1 audio output on these.

      HDMI/Optical inputs at this price? Lulz, you must be joking

    Only way to use these as "TRUE" Surround Sound is for a PC.
    So it is useless if you are thinking of "cheap surround sound system for TV/PS3/Xbox/Game Console"

    You can view here for the backing with all the plugs:
    http://article.techlabs.by/img/article/29815/Logitech_Z506_b…

    • What input would you use from a pc to get true surround? "Audio in" is only a stereo input isn't it? 3.5 don't carry anything higher than stereo do they?

      • 6.1 surround sound cards (and almost all modern motherboard integrated soundcards) have multiple 3.5mm connections for each channel.

        As you can see in the photo above, Audio In for PC has 3 plugs, each plug contains 2 channels.

        Green = Front 2 Speakers
        Yellow = Back 2 Speakers
        Black = Center Speaker

        Subwoofer is activated using a frequency cutoff so below a certain frequency the amp in the surround sound system will shift the frequencies to the Sub.

        I may have gotten Yellow and Black mixed around, but that's the jist of things.

        • ah i get you.. I had no idea - never seen dual 3.5 outputs from a PC. thanks!

    • You can use a decoder and the optical ports on a lot of your devices.

      I can't guarantee that it'll be brilliant but people appear to be having some success: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1458270

      • That should work, just get a 3.5mm to RCA so it will join up to the box.
        A little bit of a price overhead making this around $110.

        So you will need to do the maths, to either get a package which is meant for the tv, sometimes DS does Pioneer ones for $150-200.

        Or get these and buy a box.

  • Ok. I am about to display my ignorance here but if anyone can help out that'd be great.

    I realize these won't be brilliant but if I hook them up to my bluRay player via rca how true to the intended surround sound will it be?
    Likewise, If i plug the bluray player into the tv and then run rca out of tv to these. Will that be any better or worse? Will I have volume control via either method?

    Obviously I could spend much more on something much better but at the moment I am using the tv sound and won't be forking out anymore than $150 anytime real soon.

      I assume you mean these connections?

      1. BluRay -> 2-channel RCA cable -> Z506
      2. BluRay -> HDMI cable -> TV -> 2-channel RCA cable -> Z506

      Your question has already been answered by Amar89 above: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/114016#comment-1554095

      When you're connected to a 2-channel stereo source, it uses 5.1 virtualisation (basically rear and center speakers just echo the sound of L/R). It's not perfect but it does sound better than straight 2.1 audio output on these.

      (The second sentence is Amar89's personal opinion. I think the contrary is true.) You will be getting zero surround sound as intended because you will be listening to a virtualisation based on a stereo signal.

      There is a physical volume control on the Z506, so you will always have control over the volume.

  • I have these and they are excellent for the price. Cant complain

  • Please refresh my memory - is this the best price we have seen on those?

  • Can anyone tell me if the center speaker has an adjustable stand under it so it can be mounted on the top of a PC monitor like the X-540's could?

    • +1

      yes center speaker has fold out thigie…

      you can adjust to mount on top of your monitor.

  • I have 2 sets of these and after a year it's kinda annoying when you have the buzzing static sound when the TV and laptop are totally off. Luckily it has an on/off button on the right speaker to turn off

  • I have bought this exact model when it was on last deal at the Dick Smith.

    I hvae been using this for about 2 years now.

    It is a good loud speaker system with good base, I use this to watch movies on my computer.

    BUT!!! be aware that when you turn on the speaker (in my case) making this low humming sounds from the speaker.

    It is very annoying. (it could be my MAC PRO lappy)

    I have isolated the power plug (only speaker power plugged into the wall socket) and tried on mp3 player it did not make any difference. humming sounds are there.

    just be aware this speaker makes humming sound when plugged into the computer.

    my 5 cents worth feed back.

    I have been using these for a while on my PC and they are great for the price. Obviously not audiophile quality and some people might snicker but for the average consumer you won't find many 5.1 speaker sets for a computer at this price. If you're using it for home entertainment purposes I would suggest getting an actual home theater but that's just me. I have not experienced any hummung/buzzing as mentioned above.

  • I also have this (bought from LTS for $49 a while back) and though they're good when in use, I've also experienced the humming/buzzing from my speakers when they're idle. It's annoying but thankfully there's the power button on the right speaker.
