  • Look kind of small. Can the cameras withstand the glare and the heat in summer?

Are Swann still producing junk or is this finally a half decent kit? To date I've never seen anything decent wearing the Swann label which is a shame since they are an aussie outfit I think.

    • Nope, still a junk brand, they just have good exposure because of Dick Smith.

      • When my last Keyboard died I went to HN to grab a replacement (there's only a couple choices in town) opened up the keyboard box to check what the Swann was like and a key fell off, checked another one and some of the keys didn't work.
Too bad I really liked the look of them.

Since this is your basic chinese stuff, nothing special, why would you pay this much for it? You should be able to source an equivalent system for $300-350 without the worthless 'brand' name.

Guy's this is junk. Golden rule with CCTV is that if you cannot identify the perp then it is of no use. Very expensive visual deterrent. Analogue cameras are old school move on to IP based cameras for anything of any real use.

nothing something as simple as a hoodie won't fix :)

a lot of ip cameras also have crap resolution

      • +1

Yep and when you set off a camera rigged for motion sensing and a local alarm nothing a lump of 4x2 won't fix.

    • I'm just curious as to why?

    • Couldnt agree more. You are 100% spot on. I have a friend who has spent over $2500 on Swann cameras, this includeds replacing them after 1 year. Cant even read the licence plate of a car parked a few meters away from the camera.

Like you said, completely pointless if you image is just a blurry figure. Avoid like the plague.

I bought a 4 camera Swann kit from Dicksmith, and I agree, its junk…. But its good to identify problems or people if the camera is at the right angle and the lighting is right.

The recording box itself.. :/ well its good to record the video but impossible to watch video on it as fast forward and reverse is useless(but can be done slowly), it doesn't seem to have enough processing power to do much, better to watch them on a PC.

You would think in this day and age (2013) we could get good cheap CCTV setups instead of this 10 year old stuff.

OP, Just some advice. If you can get a refund or cancel the purchase I highly recommend that you do so. These are garbage at best. I installed my own CCTV system after many weeks of research and as per my comments if you cannot identify the perp then it is of no use. A system with 600TVL is not likely to give you facial recognition unless you are close plus I did not see anywhere the spec's of what you are actually getting ie lense size & type and key features.

Up to you but $1,000 for a analogue Swann setup is mega bucks for what you are getting and insane to claim it is $500 off. Look for IP based or Megapixel cameras. Youtube & Google will show you the difference between them and analogue cameras.

    Good luck.

Out of curiosity what did you install?

    • Thanks for the heads up, but at the moment cancelling looks like a problem as i didn't register when paying and i cant get to the cancellation page and cant contact customer service cause its past trading hours. *sad face.

      • Give them a call in the morning 1300 366644 should be no problem. You should have an email detailing your order with an order number - that is all you need to reference when you call them + identify yourself. Item will not even have been shipped. Ask them for a confirmation email of the refund also and get the persons name you are speaking with and the time you call. You should have the funds back in your account by the end of the week.

    • Thanks for heads up Dean (and others above).

I've been considering a Swann setup for a few months now, and almost bit the bullet over the xmas sales. Glad I didnt.

It makes perfect sense that the camera's should be of high quality, and I'm surprised that I havent picked up on this important fact myself when looking at these multi camera swan setups on display at Dick Smith and the like.

Thanks again for taking the time to explain your reasons, instead of just saying "crap" and that's all. Saved me A LOT of money today.

    • hmmm this stuff we are talking big bucks I take it :http://www.digitalsi.com.au/hd-sdi-cameras.html

      • Depends what you define as big $$ and for what purpose they serve. I have what I need.

      • How do you know? There are no prices listed!

  • Honestly for what you get out of these you can piece together your own security system for very cheap.

24/7 online computer and router with wireless.
    1. Android phones for lower quality picture
    2. Mini computers like raspberry pi connected to a webcam, you can use one of the high quality logitech webcams.
    3. High quality IP webcam

Requires some work but much cheaper.

    • When did 'for cheap' become acceptable use of English? I've even seen it on a TV ad from a big company. Gag.

      • +1

Did you mean 'become an acceptable use of English"?

        • -1

No, I wrote and meant 'become acceptable use of English', which is an acceptable use of English.

  • I love the use of the word 'perp' in this thread. Should be more of it.

  • A few much cheaper "reconditioned" options in this weeks Swann email (including 4 channel with cameras for $99):

Of course I suspect these are no where near the specs of the one listed above.
