1 Day of Free Travel Refund on Your Myki Card for Monthly/Yearly Pass Holders (VIC Only)

560

(VIC Only)
Every month results are published showing if Melbourne's Metro Trains have met their service targets.

They failed to meet those target again in December and it is a little known fact that customers (those with monthly/annual passes) can claim compensation (equal to one day’s fares) as a result.

Simply print out the form, fill it in and send it off to the address supplied (no stamp required) and whammo 2-3 weeks later $7 (1 days free travel) will be credited to your Myki card!.

http://metrotrains.com.au/performance/results/monthly
http://metrotrains.com.au/webfm_send/140 (This is the form to print out, complete and post – no stamp required)

(NB This has been posted a year or so ago but I wouldn't be claiming myself now if I wasn't alerted to it by a previous Ozbargain post. I figure there's another 100,000 other Victorians out there who might also like to know about it)

Thanks for posting here. If this was in the forums myself and many others would have missed out.

      • +5

I check every now and again so there would be a pretty high chance I would have missed it.

Thanks for the tip but I know I can always rely on the members of OzBargain, am i right guys?

          @ padfoot07
Thanks for posting this bargain :)
I appreciate it, and I know a few others mates of mine do too.

          @jv
          U need to relax, mate…

        • +1

But the point is this is clearly not a bargain. How can a refund you are already entitled to for poor service you already paid for ever be, as you called it, a bargain. A handy public service announcement for some, but that is what the Forums are designed for.

Thanks for thanking me but I didn't post this, but thanks to scooter61 ;)

  • Can someone explain to me why they give 1 day free travel when targets are not met? It seems like it should be the other way around. If targets are met they should give a free day of travel. I'm sure there must be a reason behind it, I would be interested to know if anyone has any idea.

    • i knew you werent victorian:p

targets will never be exceeded in victoria for a number of reasons, and compensation is given to the customer and government at times for poor results, you cant go giving money to customers like that (in such a broad scope like a free days travel)

im reluctant to give this a + 1 as i dont see compensation as a deal, but this is definately good information to know

    Myki is a joke.

    • I agree.
Compared to other countries, the Myki system is such a joke. The contact less system isn't really contactless since most of the time you need to pull it out of your pocket and stick the card in front of the sensor.

Check out the ones they have in Asia like Japan/Hong Kong/China (Certain Cities)/Korea/Taiwan, you can literally still use the card when it is in your bag/hand bag….. Now that's called a contactless card.

      • Half the time, even with contact, card won't register. Consistently need to retry.

      • We should have gone with their systems instead, since our inferior system went way beyond budget anyway. Would have cost the same, maybe even less.

Seems each time this is listed as a 'deal' it is correctly pointed out that a contractual refund for poor past service is not a deal. No one can benefit by buyng this 'deal' now. This is just a public service notice to remind you to pick up something if you already bought. By definition poor service, refunds, recalls, etc are not a bargain. Just check regularly to see if there is a refund & post in forums. I agreed with jv?

Besides, a true OzBargainer would make sure they got the most value from their purchase, by regularly checking for free day refunds.

2nd time you say that in this post, we get your point of view and clearly most people disagree

      • -4

No problem having a different point of view.
But this is not a bargain or a current deal - seems more like a competition (& this is a reminder that you just won!) - you buy a pass knowing the bonus prize is 1 free day of travel on an underperforming system, you wait, they draw the magic performance numbers & see if that month is a winning ticket, you look up if you won, and fill in a form to claim your prize. (Of course a winning month means many lost by arriving late & like all lotteries the prize was built into the price of the pass anyway.)

Don't think this would be OzBargained if presented as a competition where you may win a free day of travel for every 28 days you buy, still handy bonus. (But then competitions aren't bargains.)

If they automated the refund system or improved performance there would be no need to post. Complain about the system to someone who can change it, rather than thinking compensation for poor performance & the need to lodge a claim due to poor system design is a bargain.
Have fun with the forms ;)

You have to print out, fill in, and post a form to receive your entitled refund? Seriously, a form, in this day and age?

    • +13

Now with myki they should be forced to automatically credit people's mykis with the refund.

      • +1

It may have changed recently, but back when I needed to get my Myki converted from a concession to a full-fare around a year ago, they couldn't transfer the balance from the old one to the new Myki. They needed to send me the remaining balance as a cheque in the mail! A CHEQUE! From a fully electronic system where the money is all in a computer system. Ridiculous o_O

        • Haha, try disputing an unauthorised charge from Jetstar. They require you to FAX through your bank statement! A FAX! I Haven't seen one of those in 6 years, so I just let them steal my money in the end.

    • +4

Thats how they make it hard to get ozbargained! Most people would be put off by it.

COTD should take note. Posting a form to get cheap PS3.

    • +3

They have physical forms on myki for any kind of reimbursement/replacement. They've set up a system whereby its easy to give them money, but hard to get it back. Most people can't be bothered filling out and mailing forms, which means its less cost to metro/myki for failing to meet targets.

    • You shouldn't be surprised. This is the company that can't even credit your account straight away when you add money via the internet.

  • +2

Why are they still use this manual printout method for refund. I can understand for metcards. But with myki, they already know which account is traveling monthly. They should just apply it automatically. The form is so inconvenient and waste paper/time.
I guess they design it to make people miss out.

    • absolutely! and its a crock that they have met performance for months on end before this as the services have been pretty bad IMO.

In fact I just saw that they didn't meet in November - I swear that in my calendar reminder that I looked last month and they claimed to have met targets! It looks like you can only claim November up until the end of December too :(

      Anyone else smell a rat???

      • November was reported on time.
My whole team at work claimed.

        • ok cool my bad, don't know how i missed that one… I have put in a claim and hope they don't notice! I reakon I deserve a weekly for November for the amount of late trains I seem to cop….

  • " We will accept claims up to the end of the month in which the results are notified." - I dont see results of december, so do i need to claim for november.

    results are here. http://corp.ptv.vic.gov.au/managing-victoria-s-public-transp…

What's the problem, this is a great bargain. I bought 2. Cheers OP

  • 5% price match at officeworks?

  • +1

They should really automate the refund for registered myki users, if they really want to encourage users to register their myki.

  • +5

    Easiest way to claim:

    https://metroclaim.herokuapp.com/

Credits to perrynfowler. Came across this handy link on reddit.

    • Thanks. I had to do 3 forms so this helped a lot!

With that said, they should really automatically credit ALL eligible Mykis. So many people wouldn't even know that this is a thing.

  • Thanks for this - Metro have been "gaming" the system for the past 12 months so I gave up looking for compensation.

I have a yearly so use it top up my daughter's Myki card.

  • Now they have Myki, they should be able to credit those with registered cards who fit the criteria automatically by running a query over their transaction history. For that matter if people bought weekly or daily tickets on a registered myki covering the same period they should also be compensated.

    • +2

Lol, if they didn't contract out the Myki System to morons then you probably can do that. But now that they are like 2-3x over budget, they have nobody to add this extra functionality…

I find it amusing how such a new system could be so much crappier than old systems like Hong Kong's Octopus which was launched in 1997 (NOTE: this is 15years ago….), Korea T-Money (2004), London Oyster Card (2003)……… DUN DUN DUN Myki 2008.

We are in 2013 and the Myki is still generations behind Hong Kong Octopus a system that was made 15+ years ago.

It would have been cheaper to just commission HK to make their system…. haha (If your locals aren't going to do a good job, then they deserve to be fired and jobs should be moved offshore).

  • How much time do we have to claim this 1 day? is it possible to make a claim for every month Metro have been late over the last year…and is it possible redeem something that's actually worth taking the time to redeem like say, a weeks free travel?

    • thanks for sharing… don't hold your breath, I've sent numerous complaints their way about this over the last couple of years and they have not even bothered to reply to me.

It all sucks as much arse as their pathetic joke of an audit process that actually assess the performance in the first place - SO much must be excluded because so many trains are late and cancelled its an all round joke.

      • Oh and by the way this bs way of applying for compensation makes me MORE sure that I will always monitor the compensation area of the site and claim EVERY SINGLE TIME on principal.
And I always email my whole workplace as well to alert co-workers. (and great to see this on ozbargain - power to the masses, I hope more people apply!!

Oh and in a side (related) note, my stupid ^%%&*@! Myki 'Expired' the other day (from old age) and I was emailed with 2 days notice and then had to MAIL my card in with a MANUAL FORM and now hope they actually send me my new card, with my correct balance.

My estimate from previous experience dealing with MYKI suggests I have about a 25% chance of this happening without numerous frustrating phone calls.

I sometimes think it would be easier to just ride the train without all the bs and just cop a fine every now and then for not having a ticket, probably cost more in the long run, but it would be less hassle!
