just what my daughter needs to power her 2 laptops, 2 ipads and iphone….

do people get 3 phase installed when getting these?

    • +7

I did but I don't think you need to. I thought I'd get 22KwH speed by doing it, but get 11KwH.

Whether its worth it for you probably will depend on how much you will drive/charge. If its a lot, the extra speed might be good. I only run through 6-7% of my battery a day, so a few mins overnight is plenty

      • +6

Should have bought a Porsche Taycan then you'll get 22kWh charging speed.

      • +1

It’s the car limitation. Model3 and ModelY max charge is 11kwh

        • +2

That would suck if they only let you charge to 11kwh!

          /s

(kwh is a measure of storage not the rate of charge, thats measured in just kw.)

        • On AC, yes. On DC, super fast

      • +14

Single phase will typically get you 7.2kW charge rate. Three phase (with this chrger) can get you up to 22kW if your car can AC charge that fast. Many can't. The actual AC charge unit is on board the vehicle, so the limitation often lies with the car rather than the charger. DC charging (supercharging) bypasses this onboard AC charge unit and can generally go much, much faster. DC charging does the AC to DC conversion in the cabinet adjacent to the charger and dumps the output DC directly to the battery.

        • +1

In Qld the Queensland Electricity Connection Manual (QECM) has a requirement that an EV charger can only be allowed to draw 20A per phase (4.8kW) if used at single phase residential connection without active management.
          https://www.energex.com.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0003/11718…

          • @sillyhead: Interesting to read what they are doing in Qld. No such regulation in my State……yet. Makes sense though!

          • +1

@sillyhead: Haha too bad so sad. 32A connected just this week.

Not sure if they can manage it or not - it’s an Ocular home solar.

          • @sillyhead: PSA: evchargers.com.au sell a 20A single phase portable specifically designed to meet this requirement of the QECM.

        • Can you ROOT a tesla and custom run a faster charging software?

Tesla sales are down 71.9% YoY in February(thedriven.io). Model 3 fared even worse with sales down 81% YoY.

Not looking good for Tesla…it's a race to the bottom.

Bitcoin is currently a grand pump and dump scheme for Trump administration, just like his own meme coin.

It's not a coincidence that 5 coins (Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, Solana, and Cardano) that Trump named for US strategic Crypto Reserve are also top coins on Bitwise. A company that David Sacks - Trump's Crypto Czar, is heavily invested in with his venture investment firm Craft Ventures. Its top five cryptocurrency holdings? Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, Solana, and Cardano. It's all open corruption at this stage.

            @dealhunter52: Rugpull like tesla

          • -1

@dealhunter52: Lol ppl were saying that about btc when it was $100, $1000 , $10000 and so on. And still are in denial its the best performing asset on this planet last 15 years.

Cant wait to hear ppl say its pump and dump at $1m and $10m and so on.

            • +1

@Omarko: Please go ahead and buy all you want. It will still remain an asset with no intrinsic value.

              • +1

@dealhunter52: Value is what people put on it. There are 1b people who say its a value for storing wealth so there you go.

The notes and coins you hold have no intrinsic value but people have accepted it as a form of trading convenience therefore they adopted that insted of gold. But really its just plastics and paper with writting.

Once governments start backing BTC or any other mode of accepted currency it becomes valuable. Think about what money is, currency etc.. and you will come the thw same conclusion.

              • +2

@dealhunter52: The 'intrinsic value' of BTC is it's scarcity and people's opinion that it can store purchase power over time (if enough people believe it can, then it can). if you take out Gold's ability to store wealth due to scarcity and people's opinion, and only use Gold's so-called 'intrinsic value' instead (such as industry-usage and jewellery-usage), then based on Gold's pure 'intrinsic' demand and current supply, the price of gold is 1/10 of today's price at best.

      • New Model Y coming in a few weeks.
New lower price model coming in the next 6 months.
Tesla even with ALL the BAD publicity still outsells any other brand in Australia and most places around the world!

        • Model 3 Feb sales went down 81% YoY, which wasn't undergoing refresh…maybe you can come up with some excuse for that too. I will await the results of mental gymnastics.

      Genius :P

  • Not sure where you are, but there's zero in stock at any of my nearest 10 stores in Sydney.

    • +4

Not sure which part of Sydney you are, but seems Rouse Hill, Castle Hill and Minchinbury still have some

      https://nrby.in/bunnings/0670324

      • Thanks. Unfortunately I'd be spending the savings on tolls and electricity (let alone the time) to make it to any of those stores.

        • +1

Did you try Delivery option? It's showing $10 standard delivery or free with OnePass when I put random address in Coogee

    • Also partly due to only limited Bunnings have an EV section.

I known Alexandria, Pymble, Rydalmere do, but when they are out of stock, the options become very limited.

  • What is the impact on battery life from doing fast charging vs lots of trickle charging?

    • +1

On a Tesla? Not a big impact as it has active temp management.

    • +4

The Tesla Wall Connector is slow/trickle charging. Maybe you are talking about DC charging, which has some impact, but is largely not worth worrying about.

    • Can we not so this again

    • Supercharge when you absolutely need to, otherwise charge at home with this type 2 charger.

  • +1

Have one of these on single phase power , get 6.8kW speed from it. Use the app so it only charges when power is 8c / kW.

    • +1

You mean using schedule charging at certain hours?

      • +1

Yup, I do the same on the mobile charger

      • +1

My car doesn't have smart charging, but with the Tesla app and charger I program it to only charge between 0000 and 0600 hours at 8 cents kW.

    • +1

The charger is just a terminal. All the settings are set in the car. I also charge overnight via OVO at 8cents a kWh. I can do 50% from midnight to 6am on 26A single phase.

    • You can get 7.2 kW on a single phase with this.

      • It's actually 32 amps X 240 volts = 7.68kw

        For single phase

      • I also get 7.2 kW on a single phase. I have the LR so basically 10% battery charge per hour which is not too shabby

    • +1

And I also have FREE window 11am-2pm everyday with OVO Energy.

      • I love that 3 hr window - charge EV, charge!

  • seems this is not “smart” in that you can’t set it to only charge with solar (without a powerwall), anyone know if it’s still good value at $730 (could probably get something going with home assistant) or if there’s better options out there? I only “need” 11kw as limited by the model Y. Have 3 phase.

    • You can take a look at ocular, zappi or evnex. If you have a fronius inverter there’s the wattpilot. But they’ll be $1k+ for the unit.

Otherwise there’s the chargeHq app but there’s a monthly fee for charge on solar.

      • +1

I think ChargeHQ option only works with the Tesla charger if you own a Tesla.

      • +1

        Were you Trump’s secret admirer?

    • +3

Just use a 'dumb' charger during daylight hours. This will get you 90% of the way to a 'smart' charger, without the added cost. I doubt you would make up the difference in cost with that last 10% (except if you live in SA possibly).

      • car is at work during daylight hours though

        • +1

In which case a smart solar-aware charger is even more useless to you.

    • +1

I just use the Mobile Connector which can actually handle 32A.
Comes with a 15A adapter. Just need to install a 15A socket if you don't already have one.
If you need more, then install a 32A socket and buy a 32A adapter for $100-$200.
It's not one of those 'smart' options but cheaper to set up than the wall connector.

      • Did you need to run a new cable for the 15A socket ?

        • +1

Same cable. Just need to change the 10A to 15A adapter for the UMC. Which should already be included.

          • @Chopstix: Good tip thanks. About to take delivery of a MY next week and 15A will be 50% quicker than 10A

If we want to go 32A presume that will need a new MCB and new cable

            • +1

@Big Cat: Sorry I totally confused myself with your question. A 15A plug wont fit into the standard 10A sockets. More than likely you'll need to run a new cable. Which, if you are doing, then may just be worthwhile to have a 32A installed instead.
I had a 15A socket already at home so I didn't need to run a new cable in my case.

I refreshed the page and suddenly it was $730.

i kept refreshing since last hour and its still $730 :(

    is this Gen 3?

Had one of these with electricity supply from a diesel generator. Generator ran out of fuel so everything stopped.

            Are they discriminating here?

  • Guys, do you need an electrician to install this?

    • +5

      Obviously.

    • you need a electrician to fit light bulbs in certain states.

      • +5

in the nanny state of vic, we need to pay an electrician to come press the smoke alarm button and replace the batteries…

        • Please tell me you're kidding lol

        • +2

Only if you are a landlord.

And as a tenant this is fantastic as the last thing I want is my life in the hands of some dodgy landlord who is looking to save a buck. Especially when most houses have hard-wired and you want a proper test.

In your own house you of course don't need an electrician.

    • Yes.

    • +3

They've had that price for a while now. But you can use "5off" coupon to bring the price down to $693.50 with evchargingaus.

    • Was Just about to order then I read this post. I always get worried when there is no PayPal or credit card option. i think ill stick with trusted Bunnings
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/873541

  • In contrast, has the Tesla 6m Type 2 Universal Mobile Connector EV Charger gone up in price?

In fact I found a press article in November 2024 of Bunnings stating it was $500 while the Wall charger was $800.

  • Can I take my $800 receipt and get a refund?

  • +1

Do you get free membership with MAGA, AFD or any other far right political parties that Tesla money goes towards supporting?

  • If you have a solar system at home, it’s worth it. Otherwise, it’s a waste of money since the installation fee with an electrician is around $1,500.

    • Depends on the set up. I got 2 chargers installed at 2 properties with 2 different electricians. The first one cost me $450. The second one cost me $750 as it was more complex (detached garage).

    • Our install was $600 in SEQ, a few metres run.

      • +2

Relevant username given the SEQ situation right now.

    • why not worth it? And installation depends on where you install it. I only paid 1k to install my. So far, I pay about $7 for a full charge. A full tank of petrol would cost me $100+. I would have made my money back in a year's time.

      • +2

I guess he meant use free solar to quickly charge during the day.

Otherwise use granny charger to trickle charge, no installation required, slow but may work for some.
