only 12MP for such expensive phone

    • Usually the software and the image processing make up for the hardware.

      • -7

You've confused this with a Pixel.

      • +4

The latter iphones have crazy image processing which can produce very very unnatural outcomes. This one should still be fine before they nuked the processing options.

    • +21

There's a thing called the megapixel myth, more doesn't equal better and can be worse. It's be more concerned about processor speed and updates. https://garyhartblog.com/2020/08/09/the-megapixel-myth/

      • +3

Yes, big is not always better, its how you use it.

        • That's what she said.

      • +3

On the other hand, the myth about the megapixel myth is getting a bit old now. That article is 5 years old, and I have seen this myth debunked many times now (e.g. articles on dpreview.com). It's been demonstrated over and over again that, all things being equal, an image from a higher megapixel sensor downsized to a lower megapixel count is usually better/sharper than a native low megapixel sensor of the same size.

And this is what phones do nowadays, they usually shoot in the higher megapixel mode, then downsize the image to a lower megapixel count. When combining multiple high-resolution images prior to downsizing using the latest technology, the output is usually much sharper than a native low-megapixel sensor. On top of that, you may even have the option to keep the high-resolution version.

    • +18

Sony sell a $4,799 camera that is "only 12MP": https://store.sony.com.au/interchangeablelenscamera-a7/ILCE7…

      • +3

12MP allows native 4k capturing without the need of either oversampling or pixel binning.
The a7s3 is part of sony hybrid specialised for video capturing which uses the same sensor as fx3 and fx6.

That being said 12MP is good enough for digital image. Doubt many would do a large print of their iphone photo.

      • +4

        CANCEL SONY

    • +8

doesn’t matter how many megapixels, other peoples holiday photos are boring ….

    • +2

Most of the “48MP” cameras use a quad Bayer sensor, which slaps the CFA from a 12MP camera onto a higher-res CMOS sensor.

You’re actually not gaining any extra ability to resolve colour resolution, because the distance between colours on the RGGB matrix is basically the same as on a 12MP camera. The end result is that the debayering process needs to interpolate over a larger number of pixels, making the extra resolution much less effective.

      • define 'most'

        • I don’t know of any phone camera sensors at that megapixel scale that don’t use quad Bayer.

The sudden jump from 12MP to 30MP+ in phone cameras coincided with a bunch of new quad Bayer sensors being released.

          • @axyh: ok but are you including apple in that (ie are y privy to their approach) or are you talking most handsets broadly speaking (which might well not include the iphone)

i think in an iphone deal it's fair to ask given apple've prided themselves on their commitment to prioritising photographic advantage from pretty early on

i don't know the answer by the way, i'm asking thinking you might know

Edit: looks like quad Bayer from the 15 pro - https://petapixel.com/2024/09/18/megapixels-arent-all-equal-…

            • @0jay: The sensors all come from Sony or Samsung. New sensors are only released every few years.

Anyone with a "48MP sensor" in a phone is almost certainly using a Sony IMX903 or Samsung ISOCELL equivalent. They're quad Bayer sensors.

Not even Apple makes its own camera sensors. Apple could argue its lenses and processing are superior, but ultimately everyone is using the same handful of sensors for actually capturing the photons.

              • @axyh: apple've been using sony for a while far as i know, certainly the last time i was paying attention which was quite some years past

just because these sensors are prevalent doesn't mean that's all that's available (whether from sony or samsung) but as above it looks like it's quad bayer from 15 pro which'd mean, i think it fair to say, that the phone in this deal's quad bayer for sure

  • +25

    $$$ for a 3.5 year old phone?

    Yeh nah

    • +2

Do you expect it to be free?

      • +39

Think they were expecting $$ not $$$. Least it's not $$$$ but.

        • But what?!

          • @s1Lence: Don’t you like his but?

          • @s1Lence: Isn't that a Queensland thing? Adding "but" to the end of sentences.

    • A used iPhone 12 is half the price, rather hunt for one kf those tbh if I was after an iPhone bargain

      • Brand new 12 is rare and battery efficiency is poor. This is good value for new 13. Will also hold resale value.
Way better than 16e if you can live with lightning

  • +9

I would get s24 base model for a similar price

    • +7

      I wouldn't.

      • yep, no thanks

      • Why not (if you're not tied to a specific eco-system)?

        • -4

          Because I value:
          1) Long software support for secruity updates.
          2) Qauility hardware
          3) Easy Apple Store reapirs
          4) Offical battery replacement at Apple Store completed within hours, not weeks sending away
          5) iOS
          6) iMessage
          7) macOS intergration
          8) Apple TV intergration
          9) AirDrop
          10) Airplay

          • +9

@PainToad: wouldn't the s24 have a longer software support period than the 13?

            • +2

              @noodlez543: S24 should have another 6. 13 another 4 based on 7 year rule

              • -3

@JohnnyP: But look how slack Samsung are with getting Android secruity updates out.

                eg. look at these delays.

                Security patch level : 2025-01-01
                Release Date : 2025-01-23

                Security patch level : 2024-11-01

                https://doc.samsungmobile.com/SM-S921U1/XAA/doc.html

                • +3

@PainToad: What is wrong with that? You get one every quarter. I dont want someone to be coding security on the daily. What is there to really patch up thats not enough on a 3 monthly basis.

                  • -4

@Fuzor: You completely missed the point/miss read the link.

                    Security patch level : 2024-11-01

This is the date Google discolsed vulnerabilities in Android and provided OEMs (and customer firmware) fixes for these vulnerabilities to AOSP.

                    Release Date : 2024-11-27

This is the date Samsung updated their firmware to incrorpate these fixes.

So there was 26 days where vulnerabilities had been disclosed and potentially being actively exploited before Samsung provided a fix.

Compared to Apple, where since they're responsaible for both the hardware and the software, they can ensure updates are pushed out the same day they disclose vulnerabilities.

                    • @PainToad: Reason for the vote down?

                      • -1

@PainToad: I didnt down vote you. But like the possibility of your phone being attacked within that 26 day gap is minimal. I'm sure Google and Samsung have assessed that risk and deemed it to be fine. But good on Apple if they are that quick to code something in. Just not sure if its that important for the average user. I literally only update when there is a new OneUI version, cant be bothered to do the ones in between.

                        • @Fuzor:

But like the possibility of your phone being attacked within that 26 day gap is minimal.

Depends on the exploit. Unless you’re reading the security bulletin every month (and have the technical knowledge to assess the risk level of each exploit) you’re just burying you’re head in the sand.

I literally only update when there is a new OneUI version, cant be bothered to do the ones in between.

                          Sorry but that’s insane.

                    • @PainToad: My first smartphone was iPhone 3GS back in 2008 and I'm yet to see or hear about anyone i know getting hacked or becoming a victim due to smartphone OS vulnerability. Sure they should keep on top of it but don't you think you are overreacting? lol

                  • +2

@Fuzor: There are literally vulnerabilities found every week

    • +4

Price is what you pay, value is what you get

  • +1

    This or Samsung S24?

    • +7

S24 specs wise. But depends what ecosystem you and your family are on

    • +1

Stick to what ever most of your friends and family are on

  • +3

S24 is leaps and bounds.. not even a competition

  • +9

3 year old model with only 128gb doesn't cut it these days for that price

      • 128 enough for me. But I pay for Google One.

  • +8

I bought a used iPhone 6S Plus for $150. Still works, a decade old. In 2035 I am planning to upgrade to the iPhone 16.

    • +1

My same plan from now on

  • +3

I looked into iPhone 13 purchase recently. Same one is $785 at Big W so could get OW to price match minus 5%. Then use gift cards to pay, such as the 10% off Ultimate gift cards that expires today. I decided it was still too expensive considering its age.

    • I got myself an iPhone 16 on the weekend. Paid nearly double for 128GB. But USB-C & Camera Control/Dynamic Island :)

      • +9

        dynamic island’s a selling point..?

  • +4

    This or 16e?

    • +1

Depends on if you’d rather an ultrawide camera or a 48MP sensor and a 12MP faux-telephoto.

    • +5

      16e

    • +3

      16e any day.

    • +4

      Both are terrible value.

      • Someone is awake

    • +1

16e. 3+ years more software support for $200.

    • +2

thanks team, 16e sounds like a better offer for an old dog who's stuck in the iOS ecosystem.

    • 16e for sure!

  • +2

don't fall this trap guys, Apple release a shit product at a high price and you go crazy hunting for the next alternative, clearing their stalled inventory omg massive trap

    • +11

Imagine being this triggered by a phone brand.

    • +4

I'm trapped. You stream of consciousness sucked me in and now I'm syntax deficient.

    • what do you define as shit product? while its true that not much innovations / features have been added in recent iPhone generations
from Processor, GPU, cameras to its eco-system is still one of the best in the market
and iphones has a long history of durability, my very first iphone 4 bought 14 years ago are still working (while most apps cannot be updated)
during the same time, I got Samsung Galaxy S3 4G and its dead just after 3 years of use

  • -7

    This is E waste

    • +4

I use an iPhone 12. It is perfectly usable. Never lags, makes calls, sends messages, takes photos, 5G, gets regular secruity updates; everthing I need.

      The 13 is even newer.

What exactly about this is e-waste. Do you even know what that means?

      • +2

Same experience here, no lags nothing, have a 12 I bought a year ago or so for $675 at OW.

These cheap deals on 3year old new iPhones are a bargain. People don’t appreciate that Apple with their complete vertical integration of hardware and software can pull off efficiencies that Android in general and even Samsung in particular can only dream about.

The 13 will probably be directly supported by Apple for longer than Samsung's current flagship.

        • I upvoted your comment but that last part about Samsung current flagship not being supported as long is incorrect. Samsung flagships are now getting similar support as the Apple ones. Even some of the cheaper Motorolas are getting well supported now.

          • +1

@Ronnnie: And this 3+ year old iphone costs the same as Samsung's current flagship series (S25+) despite having worse battery, camera, screen, charging speed, cpu, gpu, npu. Also supported for less time.

      • I had an iPhone 12, that shit is e-waste. It is laggy, iMessage crashes, phone always locks up and could not use it for minutes. Factory reset did not fix any of these issues. Experiences apply for every different individual.

        • I do have an iPhone and I think iOS is less polished than Android nowadays. I find battery life is good enough, it isn’t as good as a cheap Motorola. My last Android phone was a Samsung note 9 for comparison. I keep my devices for a long time now. iPhones performance is adequate for what I do on a phone. Cameras is excellent, better than my previous Samsung phone.

          • +1

@Ronnnie: I love apple for it's simplicity and eco system, but justification in pricing to specifications is horrendous with apple products. I couldn't justify $1400 on an iPhone 16 with 60 hz screen in 2025. Bought a Pixel 8 for $680 and i'm happy!

    • i paid $650 for an apple refurbed 256gb xs 4 years ago, sold it last week for $230, very happy buyer and i got 4 years heavy use

      how’s it ewaste exactly?

    • +5

Nonsense, and I'm not Apple lover.

The newer iPhones are not that different to the 13. You will be getting a very decent device at a fraction of the price of the newer models.

      • +1

Very true, little point upgrading from the 13 to the latest model.

  • -2

I thought 13 was a typo duh even steve jobs wont believe this high price for old thing

    • What is better at this price point?

      • Both Galaxy S24 and Pixel 8.

      • The fact that my wife recently picked up a brand new S25 for less than $500 even before taking into account $200 in JB giftcard received as a part of the deal makes this deal look like a daylight robbery.

        • perhaps, if y were in the market for an s25 and not an iphone

  • Its so frustrating the apple refuses to support older products… thats my issue… the folks love there apples and I always buy them a few generations behind…. but it always gets to a point where they no longer get updates and cant install app updates etc…. Iphone 13 support should be till 2028…. so thats 3 years….

Id be stacking this with: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/893882 for those that are interested to save an additional $50-$70 :)

    • -5

Wha are you talking about? Apple's support of phones is great. About 7 years from launch. That seems fine to me. Lots of Android devices don't get any where near that.

      https://endoflife.date/iphone

      • +3

Difference is at this price point im getting a 3 year old product with 3 years support left.

Whereas something like a pixel 8 or s24, im getting a 1 year old product with still 5 years support at the same price point

        • There was a $200 Motorola on here with 5 years of support. I won’t be replacing my phone because it stops getting os updates. Even Android 11 still runs all the apps I use.

          • @Ronnnie: I fully get that…. what im saying is there comes a point where youll find you cant use apps etc due to the fact the OS whether that be iOS or Android stops updating, then apps cant be updated, therefore certain apps cant be used etc.

            • @Mintee: I never encountered that situation on either Android or iOS. You probably need t fall several versions behind on iOS before that happens with the majority of apps.

        • At this price point, it is an s25+ with 7 years left though

      • +2

        Android isn't a phone brand

  • +1
  • Personally I could not part with $1 in 2025 to purchase a device with a lightning port.

Even if I only ever used Magsafe charging the mere presence of that port would give me hives.

    • -8

I will never understand people’s obsession with USB-C. It’s a port. Who cares (besides the EU).

      • +7

        USB-C:
its faster to charge, faster to transfer data to/from your phone (ok, maybe not on iphone as you can't really do that) and universal. Have a phone, battery backup, camera, etc? All should charge on usb, including your macbook ('cause you know charge and data rates matter there).
One cable for everything…. Oh, except Iphones.
I know many iphone users don't get it, but once you do, there is no going back.
Oh, did I mention that the One cable is cheaper and more reliable?

I am not totally against apple. Magsafe is awesome and I have a cover with it for my Samsung phone. Magsafe and USB-C: best of both worlds.
