Is This a Good Deal? - Tesla ML3 Long Range AWD

Tesla Gurus, as the title suggests, is this a fair price for this car? I have checked other cars on Carsales/Marketplace and my understanding is that it is a little bit higher but buying it directly from Tesla gets me:

One-year extra warranty on the vehicle.

Acceleration boost (For sporadic shits and giggles) -$3000 add on a new car

Enhanced Autopilot - $5000 on a new car.

Peace of mind that it has been checked by Tesla.

If I were to order a new car spec to spec, it would cost me 75k today. Thanks much.

If it is in your budget then it is a 'good deal'.

Test drive it and confirm the quality and features.

Some random Whirlpool guy could probably say herp derp bought one for $39k, but that's irrelevent if you can't get it. What do you want anyone here to say?

  • +4

If you can find an EV that's newer than July 2022 (that has never paid luxury car tax) you could potentially get even better deal by novate-leasing it (if it's otherwise suitable for your situation).

Novate leasing a 55k car could potentially be overall cheaper than cash-purchasing a 40k car, all things considered.

    • +1

Thanks. I don't have an option to do a novated lease.

    Nice that’s only 115k DOGE coins…

    • +2

      1627 TRUMP coins

    • Would be easy for anybody who listened to my advice 4 years ago and bought into it back then. I made a post about it but most people didn't believe, too bad for them. They also dissed BTC and look at that now.

      • I didn’t know you 4 years ago, we have wasted so much time we could be best friends right now.

What’s your favourite ice cream flavour?

        • I don't have a favourite, I love just about all flavours. However, the best ice cream I've ever had was probably the gelato from ice cream trucks in Melbourne as a kid, but I've not seen that deliciousness replicated in other gelatos since then unfortunately. What about you?

  • +10

Trying to be helpful here, I would check but I think the MY21's run the Intel Atom instead of the Ryzen chip which may run slower. I think it still runs Hardware 3.

The Intel Chip may not be as future proof and may lack some features of the Ryzen chip. I'd also check if it has the heat-pump as there was a change over in 2021 as well.

Without actually looking, you'd need to check things like tyre tread left and maybe run a battery health check - or get Tesla to provide one if possible.

    • Thanks. I think all of the Model 3's produced after October 5, 2020, have heat pumps installed. I will look into the processor/hardware specs, thanks.

    • +1

      can it run Doom ?

    • I think it runs the Intel chip. There is no path to upgrade. I wouldn't buy it personally. There is a definite lag when using entertainment features such as Netflix and Youtube if OP is into that stuff.

  • -1

the problem is the resale value of teslas is terrible. people can't resell their cars at a reasonable price. you will also have trouble selling it at a later date. tesla new car sales are also plummeting

    • +3

I agree. Just remember cars are NOT an investment. They are an use-asset. If OP is intending to drive it to the ground then sure, but if OP is looking to flip it in 3-4-5 years time, then another motor vehicle may be better (i.e. Toyota Hybrid)

      • +1

*daily cars are not an investment.

Cars can be an investment, just not when you daily it.

    • +1

      January numbers
Tesla Model Y on 21,253 deliveries, down 26.1 per cent year-on-year.
Tesla Model 3 on 17,094 deliveries, down 1.5 per cent.

Those numbers seem to be less about Elon's nazi salute and more to do with the fact that Tesla announced a new Model Y refresh being released in April/May.

      • -1

Alleged Nazi salute was on 20 Jan.

I don't think we will see any potential impacts for another month or 2.

        • Looking at Victoria, these days, the sales will balance out back to normal levels after the protest boycott sales losses kick in.

        • +7

Alleged..? Have you not seen the video, it's clear as day.

          • -2

@JakeyJooJoo: For the record I think it was. I don't think it's indisputable however and I haven't conducted an investigation and reached a conclusion. As such I use alleged, it's what my career has taught me.

        • +4

Migbt be an 'alleged salute', but the fact he did not apologize for making a gessture that looked like the salute makes it clear he is proud of making that gesture wether intentional or not.

          • +8

@Euphemistic: Elon is single handly the reason why a previously desirable product or brand is now undesirable.

      • Lets see in April / May.

If sales are still down I'd like to see the excuses then. I am just here for the innovative excuses for Elon.

    • Kind of, kind of not. Have a look at carsales and the data suggest suggests that they keep value pretty well (at least for now, that might change over the coming months though)

  • +1

Consider if you'll be using V2L or V2G because Teslas do not support the feature.

    • I don't need those functions, so it is okay, thanks.

    • V2G is supported. It was recently proved by a company recently. Look it up

      • +4

I think it would be more accurate to say that it seems like it's capable of it, but saying supported is a bit much. There's nothing about v2g that I could see on the website for the model 3.

        • Really annoying that dealsucker didn't provide any links. To my understanding, the current models lack the hardware and it is possible in the 2025 new models. Good thing they have a boss that isn't fickle.

    • It’s coming this year apparently. I hope it does, and I hope bi-directional chargers come down in price. It won’t suit everyone but it will suit me.

      https://www.whichcar.com.au/news/tesla-confirms-bidirectiona…

  • Similarly configured new 2025 car will set you back ~$79.5K, the price seems ok if you're wanting to buy a 2nd-hand Tesla.

Check on the remainder of warranty and weigh your appetite to pay for future repairs. It may be better to buy a new slower/lower spec'd car.

"Acceleration boost (For sporadic shits and giggles)"

Plenty of past S&G's have been had in this car, over the past ~47K KM's….

    • The warranty will be till Sept 2026.

  • +1

Do you really need the extra acceleration boost? Surely a standard model has enough acceleration for S&G.
Enhanced autopilot? What wzactly does rhat mean since theyve just announced they cant do FSD on a bunch of models because the hardware isnt suitable despite people paying $10k for it up front.

These two $3k and $5k 'options' would appear to be a software add on designed to liverate people from their coins rather than providing extra benefits.

As for 'tesla approved', for model brands its a joke. Just a quick once over that pretty much all dealers would do. For tesla, its a way to make you think they arent going to disable the options because 'youre a special customer'

    • AB is already included in all the pre-owned cars by Tesla by default (tactics to make their pre-owned cars have more value quotient). I am not sure if they will reduce the price if I ask them to take it off. Enhanced autopilot is one rung lower than FSD and does things like parallel park/ perpendicular park, lane change, dumb summons etc. Yes, those two options are software-based so it is just a toggle for Tesla but if I were to buy them separately, they will cost money, hence inclusions are welcome. Whether I will use them or not, only one way to find out!

  • +7

I do na zi why you would go for an old Tesla. You can a brand new Chinese vehicles that shit all over Tesla build quality, is brand new, and better bang for buck.

    • Tesla are the Apple of the car world. It's not for people who actually know anything about cars, it's for people who think it's the best there is.

    • i think he want to car to not go bang

  • +9

Tesla’s are the peloton of the automotive world. A tablet stuck on what is otherwise a poorly made and vanilla looking car.

The early adopters have dried up now and Tesla sales have peaked. Consumers will now stick with the auto brands they want to be seen in

    • +2

Consumers will now stick with the auto brands they want to be seen in

Or just CEOs who keep quiet, do their job and not make their customers the lightning rode for their comments.

Bezos bent the knee but he didn't have to make a big show of it.

      • Most car brands have an EV out now, so if you prefer a European, Japanese or Korean brand, you can get into an EV now. Tesla had first mover advantage but they wasted it making fugly looking cars

        • Tesla was virtually the only option until recently in Aus. Outing Mushys beliefs has now meant its easy to find an alternative product.

Just hoping that starlink gets a real competitor soon too.

          • @Euphemistic: The only ones who would have the means and motivation to compete with Starlink would be the CCP.

            • @greatlamp: I wonder if the eu is looking at it. Surely theyd be keen to move away from him.

        • Or get Chinese. They are technologically way ahead of the established brands and arguably ahead of Tesla too. Design and build quality is at least equal to European standards. And for equivalent performance/durability they're far cheaper.

  • +2

If I were to order a new car spec to spec, it would cost me 75k today.

That's a silly comparison to make though. What would it cost if you bought the specs you actually want and would use. Most likely the base spec new model 3 would be a better vehicle.

You need to look at the car in terms of your value to you. I highly doubt acceleration mode is worth $3k to you.

Tesla refreshed it last year. As such the range difference is likely minimal, as the standard range was bumped up to 513km (vs 580km originally for the old LR, which I imagine has lost a bit after 4 years and 50,000km). It came with a bunch of feature enhancements, you get a longer warranty, a more powerful motor, 2% financing (if that helps you) and a newer car.

    • +4

      see ya

    • +3

Your account is still active. I'm confused.

        • +2

          See when they joined up?
I think they definitely suffer from premature deactivation

        • Something something snowflakes melting

  • +2

If you're working, I'd say no.

Get yourself an EV sold after 1 July 2022 (and below the luxury car tax) and get it via a novated lease for the tax benefits.

  • +3

Looks like it would be $80k for the same vehicle new (Victoria) and thats without the "acceleration boost" - black adds $1500, 19" wheels $1800, black/white interior $1500, Enhanced AP $5100 - so "only" $48k seems like a pretty decent drop in 3-4 years (47k seems low too).

That being said, personally id probably just look at a new base model RWD for $60k…….513km vs 580km, 6.1 vs 4.4 0-100. That is, of course, if i could stomach drive a Musk-mobile…..

  • +10

Why bother with an old car, just get a brand new BYD Seal Premium for $56k driveaway or a Sealion 7 for $58k driveaway if you want a larger SUV. It'll be cheaper if you can go through novated leasing.

    • +3

BYD has nowhere near the tech Tesla has, nor is it as efficient or seamless connectivity with the Tesla superchargers which is important for long distance touring. Tesla’s are also updated regularly and get new features added,

      • +2

I wouldn't be buying an EV for long distance. The supercharger rates makes it comparable to an ICE.

As for features. Depends on how long you want to spend in the car everyday.

I'd rather drive a Piccanto and put $40k into an investment. S&P500 turned $10k into $200k over the last 20 years (Vanguard investment report)

    • +1

Thanks. Unfortunately, novated leasing is not an option.

  • +1

EVs had build quality issues. With Tesla being the dominant EV manufacturer, that was saying that Teslas weren't initially built well.

The numbers now are saying that between Tesla progressively improving its build quality, and the Chinese EVs which now make up so many EV sales having good build quality from the start, EVs have reached parity with ICE vehicle build quality standards. Not sure how far back that applies for Teslas.

  • +1

As others said, look at the novated lease if that's an option for you to see if it works in your favour and compare the final cost of a new vs used EV.

  • +2

The car is fine. If you like it, buy it.

But as you've seen on this thread, it's a highly polarizing brand because of Musk's behaviour. You may be nervous parking the car, as a small number of people target these vehicles for vandalism.

    • Yes, I noticed that. A lot of hate for Tesla in general because of Elon.

      • On top vandals you get people driving deliberately driving poorly towards Tesla too, it’s just not worth putting yourself in such pain if I were you. You’re not at fault, but it doesn’t make it easier to know your 50k car is damaged just coz the badge. But if you don’t care, go right ahead.

      • +5

        Self inflicted.

He created a brand around himself, not the company, what did he expect?

  • Pretty good. Go for it!

  • +1

No. There are cheaper on Carsales.

  • well that was as dramatic as expected

    • It is a copper!

  • -1

Test drive the BYD, Zeeker and XPeng offerings and you’ll find that they are equal if not better in terms of tech and build quality and not to mention cheaper than a comparable Tesla. Oh and duck space Karen.

    • The only question with these new offerings is how good the support and longevity will be in Australia (Zeeker, Xpeng and BYD to a degree). If I was looking at an EV today and not Tesla, definitely look at BYD and then also Polestar/Hyuandia/KIA's offerings. If you can afford it, BMW too.

  • -4

    Tesla bad.
    CCP-made cars good.

    Okay, got it.

    • +6

      Tesla are made in China

      • +2

        Let me rephrase that:
        CCP-made and owned good.

        Okay, got it.

    • Soviet Socialist Republic?

Those old Lada's are bulletproof. Shame we don't have them here in AUS

      • No, Communist China.

The Lada Niva is a great 4WD. There's some interesting videos on YT showing how capable it is. I believe it used to be sold in Australia. It's in the same class is the Jimny but not quite as capable.

  • +12

The day when Elon Musk tried to "troll" us with the Nazi salute was the day when I told myself and people around me "enough is enough". His current actions in DOGE also add to it.

While fundamentally I partially agree with people who state that a CEO's actions, beliefs and behaviours should not influence our purchase as a consumer, Elon Musk is an edge case where his current and potential future action are so harmful to the wider world that we should wield our collective power to say no to him.

Whether the boss of Volkswagen, Toyota, Mazda etc were horrible people or have done a few dodgy or illegal stuff are indeed not overly relevant in the larger picture.

However, Musk has the ability and are actively funding far right parties, normalising fascist symbolism and are doing crazy overreaching stuff in DOGE - he has a good chance of steering the world towards a new chapter of hate ideology. If / when the world goes to full hate and is ruled by full-blown fascists in twenty years time, I don't want to have been a financial backer - would you?

I still think objectively my current Tesla is a fantastic car; however I will not contemplate any further purchase until it no longer contributes to Musk's wealth and power.

    • -6

I still find it amusing 150 year old people getting social security but it seems to have gone all quiet now. Who are these people and why is there no prosecutions?

It just seems like all announcements but we'll find out if they are really saving money.

If Trump does use tariffs to reduce income taxes it seems like tariffs won't bring enough revenue (don't forget consumption will go down as people opt for US made goods) and any DOGE savings might get consumed very quickly.

      • +1

        because it is not true?

      • +4

Come on, a quick google search explains the 150 year old thing. It isnt true and just shows that Elon doesnt know anything about what he is doing.

Hint search Social Security 150 Cobol.

        • This is incorrect, as it doesn't explain the many people older than 150 and also less than it.

          • +2

@McSquintus: So what about this then? SSA automatically cuts people off at age 115.

            https://secure.ssa.gov/poms.nsf/lnx/0202602578

Also curious about what I am incorrect about as well…

            • @nedski: This is what I mean: https://x.com/DOGE/status/1891355681879421171

It's not just 150 years old, otherwise the COBOL explanation would make sense. Considering there are ages over this when there is none on record in America, it has to be some other reason.

              • +4

@McSquintus: My god man, dont rely on some idiot in their 20's who doesnt know what they are doing. There are plenty of people out there that has explained this.

Why are you listening to those DOGE idiots over people with experience?

                • @nedski: Not sure why you are getting upset or why you think random people on the internet are more of an expert on systems they don't have access too? This is what the data is showing. The lack of date for the 150-year calculation relating to COBOL clearly cannot apply here. Who knows, there could be another explanation so you can wait until they finish investigating.

I'm sure these DOGE resources aren't 'idiots' too else they wouldn't be in such a position.

                • +1

@nedski: I'm just glad that if it is clearly misinformation/incorrect understandings of the data, Elon and doge will be quick to provided updated facts and clarify why their previous 'first impression click bait' information was incorrect, with the same level of tweet/retweet notifications/enthusiasm.
                  Right?

  • Kia EV6, Hyundai Ionic 5.

  • +1

    Is This a Good Deal?

    No

  • If you wait another year it would probably cost under $40k

    • -1

Yeah that's called depreciation. All cars do it.
