[Healthcare Worker] 8 Weeks Free (15 Weeks with Avant) Hospital & Extras Cover, Extras 2-Month Wait Waived @ Doctors Health Fund

302

I know it's a very closed group but see "who can apply" to check if you qualify.

Get 8 weeks free when you switch by 31 March. (My understanding is that you have to serve 12-14 weeks of paid cover to qualify for the free weeks as highlighted below in the comments).

Plus, you'll skip the two-month waits on extras so you can claim from essentials like dental and optical straight away.

If you also have medical indemnity with Avant, you get 15 weeks free instead of 8 (10 weeks after 3 months and 5 weeks after 12 months).

Refer-a-Friend promotion
Can be used in conjunction with Refer-a-Friend promotion (both referrer and referee gets a $100 Prezzee Smart eGift Card after referee has held policy for 8 weeks)
https://www.doctorshealthfund.com.au/refer-a-friend

Doctors’ Health Fund will provide members with a unique code (the “Promotional Code”) which must be used by the new referral, within the Promotion Period, when completing an application form on the Doctors’ Health Fund website at the time of joining the fund.

The Promotional Code must be included on the Referred Friend’s application form at the time of joining for the Promotion Benefits to be issued. If the Promotional Code is not included, neither party will be entitled to receive the Promotion Benefit.

The Referred Friend needs to be active and financial for eight continuous weeks for the Promotion Benefits to be issued. Doctors’ Health Fund is entitled to disregard any purchases using the Promotional Code if within eight weeks of that purchase the relevant purchaser has terminated their policy for whatever reason.

Who can apply?
The following people can apply for health insurance with DHF, not only for doctors as name suggests.

  • Current or former (including retired) registered medical practitioners, including overseas trained doctors registered for the AMC exams.
  • Current or former (including retired) health practitioners in any of the following fields:
    ** optometry
    ** physiotherapy
    ** psychology
    ** occupational therapy
** dentistry (including dentists, dental therapists, dental hygienists, dental prosthetists or oral health therapists)
** medical radiation (including medical radiation practitioners, diagnostic radiographers, medical imaging technologists, radiographers, nuclear medicine scientists, nuclear medicine technologists or radiation therapists.
** Students studying to become a medical practitioner or eligible health practitioner.
** Employees of a medical practitioner or eligible health practitioner, such as practice managers and receptionists.
** Employees of any member associations for medical practitioners or eligible health practitioners, such as the AMAs.
** Families of eligible members, which includes parents, children, grandchildren, spouse/partner, sibling or niece/nephew.

For comparison, I used this government link and not the dodgy compare the market sites. I didn't know before that this existed and makes comparison easier:

  • I am with these guys. This is a bit expensive but provides a great cover :)

    Not for Nurses

    • Not for dentists either from memory.

      • Looks like dentists are listed

        • Oh okay. In that case, I stand corrected. When I joined, I remember dentists not being listed but that was 5 years ago. Thanks

        • +2

          Dentists on ozbargain?

          • +1

@U30004: Dentists don’t make a lot. It’s the dental practice owners that mint $$$$

            • +1

@glenf: Should we open ozbdental practice and all ozb dentists can mint $$$ together?

      • Are they anti-dentite?

    • Thats a shame. I didn't even realise that until now. Thats bad. I apologise 😔

    • +1

Not for podiatrists, pharmacists, and speech therapists too

    • They would probably be covered under

Employees of a medical practitioner or eligible health practitioner, such as practice managers and receptionists.
Employees of any member associations for medical practitioners or eligible health practitioners, such as the AMAs.

  • Better than Bupa?

    • Def better than Medibank + Ahm in terms of benefit/cost ratio. This was based on my calculation when I was with them like 6 years ago but things may have changed

    • Bupa was charging 8k for hospital alone. I got hospital and extras for 8k with them and then 3.5 months free. $500 per person for optical over 2 years and $1600 for dental

      • +1

I pay like 5k I think. 500 per person for optical over 2 years + 2 annual dental checks up. Hospital is top

        • Unfortunately needed pregnancy cover 😬

          • +1

@Royale with cheese: Mine is still with pregnancy hospital cover.

EDIT: Confirmed that it has pregnancy cover

          • @Royale with cheese: Very niche advice, but something that caught me out. Once your kid comes, to avoid Medicare levy you need to also have them covered by PHI, but DHF only cover them on gold policies. If you aren't expecting another to follow shortly after, it's probably worth making a plan for this in advance for where you're going to go as the first few months when your kid comes you'll have enough on your plate

  • Ok, what's the catch. The most the gov will let them give out is 6wks free. So how do we get 8?
2 wks in the second year?

  • First responders eligible here?

Careful as they are set to lose Healthscope contract:

    https://privatehealthcareaustralia.org.au/healthscope-rips-u…

    • +3

Is that specific to Doctor's HF though? Or is this a widespread issue for many funds?

      • Original list of funds mentioned here. Bupa has reached an agreement and is not affected now. Members of Medibank, nib and HCF are unaffected.

    • From Doctors' Health Fund:

Healthscope Hospitals announced on 22 November its intention to terminate its contract mid-term with Doctors’ Health Fund.

Doctors’ Health Fund members remain fully covered under their existing hospital policy for admissions to Healthscope hospitals until 4 March 2025 and, in certain cases, beyond that date.

    • +1

BUPA just managed to finalise a 2-year agreement with Healthscope so hopefully this will happen here too.

      https://www.bupa.com.au/health-insurance/bupa-customers-rema…

There is a list of Healthscope hospitals there for those who are interested.

I pay 300/month for couple with BUPA (Silver plus) via employer. Doctors Health would jump to 500 monthly for the prime choice. I wish they had something between the bronze plus and prime.

  • -1

Pretty sure Bupa had the same announcement around that time. But on monday we received an email saying Bupa and Healths ops had reached an in principle agreement and things should not change for us.
Doctor’s health fund may have worked out something as well

Thanks for all the details OP, I just checked out and it looks like Bupa is still a better deal for us

You have to have a paid 8 weeks period before free 8 weeks are added. But plot twist, the free weeks will be added 2 to 4 weeks after qualifying.

So 10 to 12 weeks paid before getting 8 weeks free.

Not a deal IMHO, negging so people read this comment.

This deal is better for churning at the moment.
which will be my next one after my free additional 6 weeks free with frank ends in about a month

I agree with the above. The headline promotional terms (as set by Doctors Health Fund) are inconsistent with the terms.

      • +2

I'll just add that @easternculture and I are regular churners and familiar with industry tactics. We're best described as frenemies 🥹

      • +1

I don't think any fund starts by giving free weeks upfront otherwise you would just keep switching every few weeks. But i am haopy to be corrected.

          They do, see:

That sort of promotion is uncommon, as it is open to abuse.

However, you have missed the point. The point made by @easternculture is that the promotion says you get 8 weeks free after 8 weeks paid. When, in fact, you have to pay for more weeks while Doctors Health Fund summon the gods to add the free weeks:

The eight (8) weeks free period will commence between ten-twelve (10-2) weeks of continuous membership.

          As I said:

The headline promotional terms (as set by Doctors Health Fund) are inconsistent with the terms.

Doctors Health Fund is being deceptive and likely inconsistent with the Australian Consumer Law (ACL). See this document ACCC Advertising and selling guide under the following headings:

          • Qualifications and exclusionary clauses
          • Offers with disclaimers and fine print

          (both on page 12)

          • +1

@YesPleaseThankYou: It may not be applicable to all but for me, i needed pregnancy cover for my wife and i have to stick around for 12 months so thought, why not? I was getting expensive quotes from other funds and i can't churn if i want to have a private obstetrician. Although i feel all health funds are a huge scame tbh

            • @Royale with cheese: Dont bother with pregnancy cover.

Public patient experience was brilliant, and my other half went through a 21+hr labour, followed by an emergency ceasarian. Couldn't fault a thing…apart from the chair for the Dads (brutal over night).
The follow up care from the nurses that come to your houses..excellent. Actually many parts are better than private.
Go to a prenatal session at your local hospital. All will make sense.

            • @Royale with cheese:

I was getting expensive quotes from other funds and i can't churn if i want to have a private obstetrician.

Waiting periods already served will carry across to your new fund.

          • +1

            @YesPleaseThankYou:

promotion says you get 8 weeks free after 8 weeks paid

            But that's 100% correct.

Doctors Health Fund is being deceptive and likely inconsistent with the Australian Consumer Law (ACL).

            No they aren't

            Their website headlines are

Join now and get 8 weeks free when you switch by 31 March*

Get 8 weeks free* when you join on any combined hospital and extras cover by 31 March 2025

There is no headline promise that the 8 weeks is immediately applied and they are clearly promoting links to the conditions you need to work with.

Just because it doesn't suit you for churning doesn't make it misleading

            • +1

              @spaceflight:

              But that's 100% correct.

Incorrect, as the customer is required to pay for more weeks prior to the application of the free weeks by Doctors Health Fund. There's no other way of getting around the gap between the end of the initial 8-week period paid for by the customer and the date from which Doctors Health Fund applies the free weeks.

The promotion is more accurately described as '8 weeks free after ten-twelve (10-2) weeks of continuous membership'.

              • @YesPleaseThankYou:

                Incorrect

                No it isn't.

as the customer is required to pay for more weeks prior to the application of the free weeks by Doctors Health Fund

Which is fine and detailed in the conditions.

Their headline is 8 weeks free.
They aren't promising anywhere that you get 8 weeks free immediately after being with them for 8 weeks.
8 weeks is the qualification period.

The promotion is more accurately described as '8 weeks free after ten-twelve (10-2) weeks of continuous membership'.

No it isn't, 8 weeks free after 8 weeks is correct.
You are confusing the qualification period with when the promotion ends up being applied.

And nowhere are they promoting '8 weeks free immediately after 8 weeks'
All they are promoting is 8 weeks free. They could apply it after 12 months if they wanted to and detailed it in the conditions.

Just because it doesn't suit you for churning doesn't make it misleading

                • +2

                  @spaceflight:

You are confusing the qualification period with when the promotion ends up being applied.

Call the period what you will, the customer is still required to pay for more than 8 weeks to get the 8 weeks free.

                  • @YesPleaseThankYou: That's correct and nowhere are they saying that weeks 9 to 16 are free.

                    • -1

@spaceflight: Thank god we jumped in. I would imagine more than a few would have signed up thinking first 8 weeks are free only to be shocked by being billed for next 2 to 3 months

                      • +1

@easternculture: Yes thank God you jumped in to tell everyone that the deal was not something that the health fund was not even advertising it to be, glad you cleared up something that wasn't actually confusing.

        • -1

As @YesPleaseThankYou comment, i have had 6 weeks free with qld country and also 4/6 weeks free after first payment (which i chose shortest offered fortnightly payment) with a few other funds.

If you fixed the title "8 weeks free after 8 weeks paid", you wouldnt get the upvotes that the deal has

          • +1

@easternculture: It wasn't intentional sire. I made it clear with the avant offer but missed the other in copy/paste. Will correct now.

    • Any ideas how the 15 weeks works (with the legislative 6 weeks max normally)?

      • Hopefully Doctors Health Fund has obtained legal advice in that respect.

        • That is in the 'not my problem basket' hahaha.

More so that a family member can access 15 weeks, and refer me for the same.

I'd be happy paying 6wks to get 15wks free… changes this deal significantly.

      • They will add it on account as paid rather than free weeks.

Ive has 14 weeks + 6 weeks additional (retention offer when i churned to nib via TCB CTM because couldnt find a better offer) from frank continous free weeks.

Up till now from July, probably only paid not more than 2 months total PHI and claimed over 4k inclusive 2 years in advance for my gym membership

  • Any deals on medical , dental or nursing school?

    • This says students could enrol. Doesn't seem to oddly include nurses

  • These guys are annoying, call you often to try get you to sign up again.

  • Wife has been with them for years, yes the cover is great, but very expensive. I presume long time members see no discount or benefits?

    • I am not aware of any unfortunately

    • TBH I haven't heard of long term members getting any deals for any product whatsoever.

    • If you stay, you pay. Time to switch!
