  • Hm… does this mean if I held QCHF PHI recently, I can't use this offer? Or below conditions are for THF and HBF only?

    1. Offer does not apply to:
      a. employees of THF, QCHF or HBF;
      b. employees of Queensland Country Bank Limited, QCHF’s agents or any of its
      related entities;
      c. current or former members who have previously received a one month free,
4 weeks free or six weeks free offer in relation to Territory Health Fund
branded cover in the last 18 months; or
      d. a person with coverage under any Territory Health Fund branded cover either
      as a spouse or de-facto, purchasing a policy in their own right;
      e. a current member of a Territory Health Fund branded cover; when upgrading
or downgrading their Territory Health Fund branded cover; adding a spouse
or dependant to an existing Territory Health Fund branded cover or making
      any other policy changes.
      f. a person who has held cover with HBF Health Limited or HBF Health Limited
trading as Queensland Country Health Fund who have previously received a
one month free, four weeks free, six weeks free or eight weeks free offer in
      the last 18 months
    • Clause 2.f is a new addition—it was not there previously.

  • Territory Health Fund (THF) appears to have silently changed the terms of this offer on 3 October 2024 to add Clause 2.f (above) and quoted here:

a person who has held cover with HBF Health Limited or HBF Health Limited trading as Queensland Country Health Fund who have previously received a one month free, four weeks free, six weeks free or eight weeks free offer in the last 18 months

Any previous HBF or Queensland Country Health Fund (QCHF) members who joined between 5 August 2024 and 3 October 2024 should be OK to receive this promotion.

It is very sneaky of THF to have silently changed the terms. Instead, the two different periods should be clearly stated in the terms.

    • that wording is so weird, why they didnt just say:

"…who has held cover with HBF Health Limited or Queensland Country Health Fund…"

  • +2

For those unfamiliar with health fund churning, this promotion is as good as it gets. The discount is 100%, as there no qualifying period before receiving the 6 weeks free.

Further, THF resets extras limits on 'Anniversary Date', meaning that your extra limits (carried over from your previous fund), will reset immediately upon your THF cover commencing. This is very useful for anyone who may have reached their current fund's extras limits but seek or need to claim more, eg, new glasses or contact lenses.

    • what will happen with extra limits with the next churn?
      say, Bupa->THF->Medibank
Will Medibank pick up Bupa's limits or THF ones? If later, this means even paying for 1 month of THF and then switch worth it?

      • The next fund won't pick-up the limits, it will sum the usage (claims) made in the relevant period and apply them to the relevant category.

Depending on when the new fund resets its Extras, it may result in you having exhausted the extras limit for that category immediately upon joining. The limits will reset per the new fund's usual schedule, eg, 1 January.

        • +1

For the avoidance of doubt: The next fund will sum the usage (claims) made with all funds in the relevant period and apply them to the relevant category.

To take your example, all claims made with Bupa and THF (and any other fund you have held in 2024) will be applied by Medibank, resetting on 1 January, per Medibank's usual process.

It doesn't matter if the sum of these exceeds the Medibank limit (the claims were properly made and authorised by each fund at the relevant time), it just means that category will be exhausted.

The information will come from your Transfer Certificates.

          • @YesPleaseThankYou: another surprise was that "free" Bupa's dental checkups are not actually free when moving to another provider :-)…
Next provider deducts those $200 (or whatever) from Extra limits, despite they were excluded from the Bupa's limits

            • @VQLD: What does it matter when the next provider likely also has free dental checkups? Many seem to.

How many checkups per annum are you doing or even need?

When churning, you'll be gone in 4-10 weeks anyway.

I don't sweat the small stuff.

      • +1

If you're ineligible for the promo (and therefore won't get any premium for free), then it is feasible to join to take advantage of the Anniversary Reset date.

        Why stay a whole month?

Always best to read the Fund Rules.

  • it's not mentioned in the T&C. this means waiting period still applies?

    • in the end i joined QCHF. they have the same offer and waived the 2 month waiting period.

      • Hi there, the home page said 8 weeks free but once I started the application, there's no mentioning of the free weeks? Did you get charged after submitting application? I haven't hit submit button yet. Thanks

        • I worried they wouldn't honour the free weeks too, but they didn't charge me.
During the application, at a particular step, it asks you to choose the first payment date. I just chose the latest possible date so it wouldn't charge me immediately and gave me time for "change of mind" in case they didn't honour the free weeks.
I suggest you do the same.

          • @TantrumToBlind: Thanks, they called me back and confirmed it’s automatic even though it’s not displayed during application page. Gonna sign up tomorrow

        • Why would Territory Health Fun (THF) not honour the free weeks?

The terms are there for the world to see. Take a screenshot and retain a copy of the PDF terms.

If, for some inexplicable reason, THF doesn't honour the terms:

          • Make a complaint to THF (and then, if needed, to the Private Health Insurance Ombudsman), and
          • Report THF to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), so the ACCC can take action if others also report similar.
  • has anyone uesd at any extras from this fund yet? planning to use and switch the following week!

  • can they claw back extras if leaving them?

    • Why would they claw back?

If you were a valid member at the time and the claim was valid, on what grounds do you think the fund could claw back?

I would suggest that you read the Fund Rules.

  • Did anyone end up proceeding with this deal and how did it work out?

    • Yes. It worked out as expected.

It is a registered health fund. What did you think was going to happen?

      This isn't Airbnb.

      • Thanks for confirming. Just curious how it works as I'm pretty new to the churn game. They ask for an initial payment date, does that mean they take the money then when you cancel at the end of 6 weeks they refund that amount?

        • As the terms say:

          1. The offer of eight weeks free private health insurance cover with THF applies to the first 6 weeks of premium of the new eligible private health insurance policy …

          Source: https://www.territoryhealth.com.au/siteassets/documents/term…

You could set the first payment date to be after the end of the first 6 weeks. Eg, if starting your policy today, the 6 weeks would end on 27 December, with payment due from 28 December. You would therefore set the first direct debit date to 28 December.

If you don't intend to stay beyond the first 6 weeks, advise them of the same a few weeks prior to the end of that period and there will be no direct debit.

          • @YesPleaseThankYou: Unfortunately, the website requires an initial payment within 2 weeks of starting the policy. It might be the case that you need to ask for a refund.

            • @boretentsu: It is not logical that the policyholder be required to pay a premium when 'eight weeks free private health insurance cover with THF applies to the first 6 weeks'.

If the website requires nomination of a date within 2 weeks, accept that, then email them to change the date. It's what I did.

All funds can set specific direct debit dates, eg, https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/15861903/redir

This stuff isn't rocket science. I will not be paying a cent to THF.

              • @YesPleaseThankYou: Thanks for your advice, will do and let this thread know how I go

                • @boretentsu: You'll be just fine!

Ask them to set the direct debit date to be the day after the expiry of the 6 weeks free promotional period. There's no need to hide the fact that you are taking advantage of the promotion.

Then, as I've suggested above, toward the end of your free period, ask them to cancel the policy from the relevant date. At the same time, you will have joined a new fund with a new promotion.

This 100% discount promotion is very unusual and uncommon. Typical promotions are 'pay 1 month, get 6 weeks free' (or variations thereof).

You may wish to consider the following, but it adds another layer of complexity:

I have recently opened a separate bank account for payment of health insurance premiums. The account will have a nil balance except for when I am expecting a payment to be processed. This ensures the fund can't make a 'surprise' debit - well, it can, but the debit will be returned by my bank.

  • Tip: as this promo is 100% free, I'd recommend joining on the highest level of cover.

  • Got the email that there guys are closing Territory health brand

    • Oh, interesting. I don't have that email.

It probably only has 10 customers (the ones that voted up this post).

All of the Territory Health Fund emails etc get answered by Queensland Country Health Fund (QCHF) staff and they often mix up the brands in responses. In my view, THF hasn't been executed very well.

Like THF, QCHF is itself a registered business name of HBF Health Limited. I wouldn't be surprised to see HBF also drops the QCHF brand.

Important Update - Territory Health Fund

I am writing to inform you of a significant change: we have made the difficult decision to close the Territory Health Fund brand. This decision was not made lightly and reflects our ongoing commitment to serving you better.

Since its launch in March 2017, Territory Health Fund aimed to service the needs of Territorian’s, with a brand tailored to the local market for the benefit of all our Members. Despite our considerable investment and efforts since then, we have not achieved the growth necessary to sustain the brand.

What Does This Mean for You?

As Territory Health Fund has always been part of Queensland Country Health Fund, you will be transitioned to an identical product under our Queensland Country Health Fund brand.

We believe this transition will help us serve you better by allowing us to redirect resources and focus on delivering value to our Members. By consolidating our brands, we can achieve cost savings that will enable us to invest in better benefits, improved services, and more competitive pricing for all our Members. Our commitment to providing you with the best possible health cover remains unchanged, and we are excited about the opportunities this change will bring.

To ensure Members continue to receive the same level of cover at no additional cost, Members will automatically be transitioned to the equivalent Product under the Queensland Country Health Fund brand.

        Timeline for Transition

We plan to close the Territory Health Fund brand in early 2025, with the transition of Members scheduled for Monday, 13 January 2025. We will provide further details prior to transition.

        • Thanks for sharing. As a new join, I have missed out on that email.

I’ll be gone by the time of the transition :)

The misplaced apostrophe in “Territorian’s” is emblematic of the poor way the brand was run.

  • Giving away free membership must've been a last-ditch attempt at growing THF.

I will add that QCHF had a similar promotion earlier this year. Although the QCHF brand appears to be safe for now, I suspect that this time next year it will become HBF.

  • Damn.

I sat down to switch my health fund. Saw this. Tried. And, it is closed now for new customers. Missed!

    • A near identical offer is available with QCHF.
