OzBargain Hits 500,000 Total Deals - What Was Your Best Find?

Feeling a bit sentimental about the growth of this site that’s become a daily part of my life over the last few years. Some of my favourite forums to read have been about the best deals that other users have landed and I’d love to see an up-to-date one as we hit this milestone.

I have a few questions; what was the most memorable deal you were able to get through OzBargain (bonus points for the URL)? Have you seen a deal so good that you kept it to yourself and not posted it? If so, what was it? Confession time.

DJI drone from Bunnings converted to $250 gift card.

    • Also shared in this one back in the day. One I did miss unfortunately was when everyone grabbed the BOSE soundbars at an awesome price

    • Was a bloody great day

    • -2

      The GOAT.

Remember it to be early on a sunny Saturday morning.

    • -1

Oh man! I forgot about that one. I got that too. That was wild!

    • -1

      Lol was thinking about that.

Most recent would be the bose qc Ultra headphone for 179 in dec 2024

    • +1

DJI drone from Bunnings actually received!

1x EV charger not received converted to $200 gift card

1x EV charger received for $300 but worth about $1500

That’s my fav deal and just last Dec/Jan

    • I've had that gift card sitting in my inbox for >5 years still thinking what to use it on

Received a free 32" monitor from Officeworks from a pricing error. Transaction was cancelled, money refunded, but they still sent the monitor.

    • -8

And you didn't give it back??

    • This happened to me also with officeworks, but i took the item back because I didn't want to get in trouble

I think the real value of Ozbargain is in the forums.

For years my approach was to invest in stock and real estate but I’m now shifting this to Pokémon cards which I will pay for using gift cards

  • Amex 5,000 bonus points for 5 transactions

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/6641

Didn’t go overboard but still got $1,000 in gift cards for “free”.

    • Hard to forget this one! My wife and I went on a business class trip around the world entirely from this promo. Was definitely my best ever win - although I learned about it from Amex direct promo mailer rather than Ozbargain. Was about $60k of value at the time, including all of our flights and accomodation. Didn't cost me anything, I just changed the way I shopped with my amex to max points out.

    • I can't be too specific here or i'll either out myself or out someone here but story time!

I used to work in a financial services company back in 2008 and part of our product was to offer charge cards to our customers relevant to the financial service we offered.

One individual (who was quite senior in the organisation he worked for, think C level) submitted 100 reimbursement claims for microtransactions on his amex for something he would have normally used his issued charge card. Instead of a purchase being $80-100 a time on the charge card, each of his amex transactions were about $3-5.

Management at the company decided he was working some kind of system and they offered to process what had been submitted but no more. He had already accumulated another 100+ before this conversation had happened and he dug his heels in.

It was enough that they took their business elsewhere over it (although to be fair, relationship was a little rocky already)

  • +2

You mean, best deal out of price error ? Lol

  • +12

I think the friends we made along the way was the best deal.

  • +10

The real deal was the deals we found along the way.

    • +5

That got me right in the tight arse. No, you're crying.

  • +1

It was a colour laser printer from Officeworks for $70.

  • Free pod coffee machine plus a $6 profit (via Cashback redemption), free sample pack of pods (claimed online) https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/140564?page=4#comment

    • That’s a sweet deal. What’s your honest opinion of the coffee it makes? Must be pretty bad surely

      • +3

Yeah, it’s junk LOL but I also got one as a gift for the monster in law so I had quite a sense of satisfaction about that.

  • +4

Sub-$600 return flight to Dubai on Emirates.

    Easily my most memorable purchase.

  • +2

The best was the forums. I was able to just chitchat without revealing myself in person or getting any extra views from my friends. Thanks mates. I appreciate the forum

US$10 worth of Bitcoin in 2014. I scored a lot of free BTC back in the day.

    • How much is it worth now?

      • +1

Lets do this! Data sourced from https://calendar.bitbo.io/price/, since it allowed me to easily look at specific date ranges. Is it correct? Don't care :P

        #theydidthemath

        BTC @ 2014 low (on 31/10/2014)
        1 BTC = US$319.64
        US$10 = 0.031285196 BTC

        BTC @ 2014 high (on 05/01/2014)
        1 BTC = US$990.00
        US$10 = 0.010101010 BTC

        BTC @ yesterday (11/02/2025)
        1 BTC = US$100287.31
        0.031285196 BTC = US$3137.51
        0.010101010 BTC = UD$1013.00

So US$10 worth of 2014 BTC could be worth anything from US$1000 to US$3000 today. Not too shabby. But it also highlights the issue with trying to make money off Bitcoin: to actually make millions off Bitcoin over that >10 years, you would have had to risk tens of thousands of dollars (and continue risking it over that 10 year period).

I ended up selling off just before COVID to buy property. Seeing the prices now I wish I held on but property prices then vs now has nearly doubled.

https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/566238 - Sold it back to Toyota before rego ran out for 48k.8k profit and a lot of fun.

(Ended up buying a Rallye LOL)

    • Why did you end up selling it? This seems like a super fun car to drive and cheap to run too. Dream.

Several grand as well from Webull, but not as much as Tiger.

    • +1

      Well played! That’s pretty insane

    • Wow, can you still get deals like this now? Did you do referrals on Reddit? How much of your time did it take to make $10,000?

      • +1

having big family is handy, also work colleagues and friends. both ways got some bonus so works well for all.

Probably Citi Payall which has gotten me $2500 in gift cards or the MG4.
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/610776
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/867446

    • Payall was so good while it lasted. Got a return business flight to Europe on SQ from it plus saved heaps on mortgage interest.

    • Payall was good for me, too. I probably made about the same in gift cards or more, not to count the mortgage interest I've saved by keeping the money idle. If I add up all of it, I'd guesstimate that it was a good AUD 5k.

  • Castrol Edge 5W-30 A3/B4 5 Litre $2

All the Nespresso machine $100 cashback deals before they tighten the rules. Buy machine from a store with good change of mind policy, claims cashback, receive cashback and return machine for a refund

    • +1

Costco had machines that were normally $180 but they did $100 off "instant offer" bringing them down to $80. Nespresso hadn't updated their terms and conditions at that point to exclude Costco from the promo.

Bought 3 at $80 each. Claimed cashback (first one went through smoothly, they fought me on the other 2 though). Sold the machines for about $120 each, i think i let the last one go for $100. $400 profit!

    • This one is my greatest. I still think about it weekly. Walking out the store with two bottles for $4 felt like The Italian Job.

      • Nostalgic lol

  • +9

    Easily the Fratelli Fresh PastaPort.
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/511526

Paid $400 5 years ago for 1 free pizza, pasta or salad everyday for life.
Still go 2-3x a week 5 years later as live walking distance to my local. Don't think this one will be topped.

    • do they all know you there?

      • Yep pretty much!

        • photo of the food next time thanks

Gotta either be the Adobe Creative Cloud for like 10$ a year that they then cancelled on me, or the iPhone 12 mini deal from amaysim.

Really needed the phone after losing my old one at NYE so was timely.

  • Nothing too crazy, but $300 RMs from the qantas store. Still going strong

  • 3 years of gamepass for around $70 :)

The Weber bbq deal and Tom

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/158680?page=7#comment-2213…

    • +1

The 50% off all BBQs on ebay is the one I always remember too. I bought a BBQ for half price, then listed and sold it (without receiving it yet) on the same day. Luckily I was able to pick it up from the seller before my buyer wanted to pick it up.

Just found my old emails - I bought a Weber Q200 for $245 and sold it for $399.

    • That was the most memorable bargain post ever.

  • Free Dominos pizza from back in 2012

  • This deal was my best (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/180912) , but I got lucky as my local auspost decided to clear the stock out. So instead of $99, They were stickered for $29, originally was going to get 2 from memory but bought all 6 when I saw the price.

  • Win a Domino's Voucher for a Traditional/Value/Chef's Best Pizza and 2 Garlic Breads from Tap King (1 in 2 Wins)
It was ridiculously easy to enter, using the gmail alias trick, I won probably 20-30 of these and my housemates did similarly. As a uni student it was GOLD.
They were delivered for free too, but they would only allow one code per delivery so the poor delivery guys saw us a LOT.

Back in 2012, 40-inch TV from Amazon Germany only for ~AU$500 including shipping.
If you buy at Australian retailers, the price would be $1000.

  • HP N36L NAS for $170 back around 2011. Still serving files and doing other things.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/44381

    • i had two of these from marketplace. great machines. recently sold them both to get something more compact.

      • +1

Yeah, I replaced the motherboard with that from a Lenovo mini-PC m93 a few years ago.

It's still a great case for 5x3.5" HDDs - much better quality than more recent NAS boxes, cool and quiet.

  • Microsoft peripheral cashback deals that gave you new wireless desktop setups for pocket change. Then later on bluetooth stuff for mobile devices. Everyone in my extended family got Microsoft stuff for Christmas every year.

    Dell $9 hdd's

    Dick Smith closing down deals

    $200 Xbox One's at BigW

Sony 7.1 speakers for $249, down from $1199 everywhere else.

Asked for a discount for paying cash, paid $246.50!

  • Free Fuel when 7/11 glitch out and locked in $0.0008/liter

    Full tank = 40L = Free fuel

    • I totally missed this. The early roll out of the 7/11 lock in was just all-round glorious

      • I saved over $100 p/l 4 times.

Glorious. Maxed out 150L nearly every time

    • Did nothing get raised at the counter (usually they say $2 minimum on the Bowser don't they?)?

      • Voucher overrides the machine counter

  • My Waterford London Desktop Bar.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/239653

Initially, I thought I would get one of these to impress my work colleagues, but then I thought I would do a broden, and bought 4. Unfortunately, it didn't work out (couldn't find anyone to buy them for more than I got them for), so they ended up in the garage where I keep them as a high yield investment.

    /s

  • But, on a more serious note, some of my recent wins are:-

My Pixel 7a, just after release, launched at $750 was just $453 with everything stacked (cashbacks, vouchers, clickfrenzy)
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/774966

Then the Denon x1800h receiver, which retails for around $920 was gotten for just over $540 after cashback
