Been watching the new Scribe for a while now and eventually pulled the trigger on boxing day. It works pretty well as a reMarkable 2 contender - a note-taking device, but has more storage, Kindle marketplace compatibility, and is much newer than the reMarkable.

New Kindle Scribe - A Kindle and a notebook, all in one. Redesigned flush-front display with uniform white borders and upgraded Premium Pen, feels like writing on paper.
Write in books as inspiration strikes - Start writing directly on the page and Active Canvas will create space for your notes.
Built-in notebook - Create meeting notes and to-do lists, or journal all in one place. Convert handwritten notes to text and email them to yourself or your contacts.
Read and write in any light - The 10.2" glare-free, 300 ppi front-lit display is designed for reading and writing anytime, indoors and out.
No distractions - Focus on your thoughts with a device purpose-built for reading, writing, and marking up documents. No notifications or social media.
Premium Pen included - No need to set up or charge, just start writing. Upgraded design, shortcut button, and soft eraser provide a perfect writing companion.

  • Love my first gen Scribe, and definitely glad the new ones come with the Premium pen because the eraser makes scribing & drawing that much more frictionless.

If I'm not mistaken, this is the first time the 2024 models have been discounted.

Still very expensive, I feel, for what it is.

Cheaper to just use an iPad.

    • +5

cheaper to buy a paper back notebook and pen.

        Great suggestion….

      • A pack of post-its is a better analogy for annotating a book? I do find, though, that the yellow 3M ones don't stick very well to PDF files or to Kindle books.

        • +1

just print out everything and stick it in a binder :D

          • @kungfuman: I've never tried it, but some people claim that it gives a very "paper-like" experience.

            • @CacheHunter: I feel these things will be a novelty that I would use alot the first week and then slowly use it less and less.

    • +1

Yep, a 'paperlike' screen protector definitely makes the iPad a worthy option.

If you're spending around $500 for a scribe, the iPad is a far better option.

    • Not sure why this has so many down votes.
      Okay, iPad 9th Gen ($397) + Stylus (~$15) + Cover case (~$15).
Even if you went for the overpriced Apple Pencil ($159) the package only costs ~$30 more than this Kindle Scribe.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but the iPad will do everything the Scribe does, right?
But what does the Scribe offer that the iPad doesn't?

But what does the Scribe offer that the iPad doesn't?

        fanboys…

It's e-ink… An ipad is not e-ink. Which is literally the entire point. It's like someone saying they want a Bike, and some one coming in and saying hey get a car it does pretty much the same thignd and more. It's a nonsense statement.

        • -2

          I appreciate the reply.
I have a Kindle, I like it. But it isn't backlit, so in the evening I read on a Samsung Tab. In the daytime I tend to read on the tablet too, because it's more convenient.
I'm also pretty sure I can get a new 2024 Kindle with e-ink technology for about $199 - and I consider that to be on the expensive side for what it is - but its price is more inline for an eReader versus an iPad.
So what is so special about the reading experience on a Kindle Scribe to justify nearly three times the price? (And that's supposedly a bargain price!).

As for your analogy. I have a bike and I like that too. But I use the car more often because it allows me to do more - go to the shops for groceries, for example, or take the family away on holiday.

My bike did not cost more than my car. Not even close. Even though it has a 105 Groupset, electronic shifting, carbon forks & rims, and disc brakes. My car is crappy.

          • -1

@sam buster: There are plenty of bikes that cost more than cars. Just like your moronic comparison of comparing one of the cheapest ipads to one of the more expensive e-ink devices.

If you’re genuine in wanting to understand this put the effort in and research it. I’m not your dad. I’m not going to waste my time on someone that is so absolutely facetious and disingenuous in their conversation. Hidden behind the veneer of pretending to learn. We get it. You find no value in it. No one cares
