MG4 is now $34990 for the base model
Oh, you did your research. Well done
But does he know his Judo well?
@SupeNintendoChalmers: No, but I bet he can spot a succulent Chinese car…..
It was either you or them.
Curious will ev drop drastically i n the next 5 years due to more competition entering?
If Aussie dollar continue to drop them probably not.
@skillet: Most of the new EVs are coming from China, so its our currency strength versus theirs that counts.
The battery pack price has dropped significantly recently and continues to drop, so it's very possible the EV prices would drop more. It takes some time for the battery price drop to reach the retail EV price.
@DmytroP: Thanks. Since battery price dropping do you reckon we will be getting more range and power for the same price in future soon?what is reasonable increases you reckon?
I think when the tesla roadster came out was around 215kw
Now performance model i saw a few years ago 450kw and almost 1000nm
They put their price up Jan 1st.
It’s cheap, but it is awful.
Why? Seems pretty good to me
Did you make that assumption after a test drive? I’d drive one first, then drive the competition.
Did you?
I drove it. I think it is great for the price. Not a lot of competition at this price point for an EV.
Pretty sure that Bjorn Nyland didn't rate it well due to woeful software.
You bought one? How did you come to this conclusion?
Really? I thought they reviewed quite well.
You’ve bought one? How do you come to this conclusion?
Agreed
Mg4 pips it in every senseQuality isn't as good in the MGs imo. Alot more hard plastics
I’ll never understand why motoring journalists and now the general public go on about “hard plastics” in cars. There are more important things to worry about.
@beltdrive: Hard plastics typically tend to become more brittle over time, and also if something is loose, the rattle is more pronounced.
@SupeNintendoChalmers: What’s a battle
@SupeNintendoChalmers: This is BS.
They point out plastic because this is where they can cut costs… as opposed to some alcantara or leather-wrapped dashboard. Nothing about brittleness if we are talking about plastics from ordinary reputable brands (Toyota, Mazda, Hyundai, BMW, Kia etc.)
@SupeNintendoChalmers: Become brittle over time? Disagree. Rattle is dependent on quality of the engineering and the quality of assembly. Nothing to do with the plastics used. There are so many annoying rattles in my current Tesla model 3 with ok soft plastics, even from new. There was NO rattle in my hard driven Mitsubishi Lancer EVO X, even after 5 yrs, and the dash there is all hard plastics!!!
@beltdrive: Let's hope you understand one day!
but it is awful.
In what way? If you could elaborate that would probably be useful to any prospective buyers.
I’d suggest doing some research before buying and test drive one.
Looks are subjective, so I won’t get into how bad it looks, but of course, that’ll hurt your resale. On that topic, a 1 year old Ora will likely merit a trade in of about $15k, that’s half the value of the driveaway.
https://www.redbook.com.au/cars/details/2023-gwm-ora-standar…Handling is fine, but reviews described the performance and acceleration as lacking. The ADAS is poorly calibrated, particularly the lane keep assist and emergency lane keep.
But by all means, buy one, and let us know how much it’s worth next year.
but reviews described the performance and acceleration as lacking
Lacking what? It does 0-100km/h in 8 secs which is respectable, actually quite good for a non-performance car.
The ADAS is poorly calibrated, particularly the lane keep assist and emergency lane keep.
Things I never use…
But by all means, buy one, and let us know how much it’s worth next year.
I don't plan on buying one, I was just curious as to what you think makes them awful. It sounds like they're not that awful after all, just a bit average which is all you can expect from one of the cheapest cars in its segment.
That value doesn’t reflect reality. Cheapest Ora at carsales.com.au is for $25k and most are close to $30k.
@Mistredo: There is a difference between a list price and a sale price. What these secondhand vehicles are really going for won't be close to $25-30k.
Admittedly, Redbook is a guide, but it is used widely, and it doesn't evoke much consumer confidence when the guide states $14-16k trade-in value.
Have you actually test driven it ? Or just going off reviews?
@spast1ka: Yes, have you? We purchased a secondhand Tesla instead.
@markis: I'm planning to this weekend. It's just your comments were referring to reviews rather than first-hand experience so it didn't sound like you had driven one yet.
$15k 1-year-old Ora I would buy in a heartbeat.
@BARE-STOCK: Let me know when you start seeing them pop up, I’ll let my parents know to go get one too for that price lol.
How awful, and compared to what? It probably isn't as good as ones that are more expensive, but not everyone can afford that.
@markis - The platform is co developed with BMW and they’re using it as the underpinnings for the next Mini model.
Having driven one, it handles very well and you get a great number of features given the price. Along with appropriately priced servicing costs (even with the recent increase).
The awful part is GWM not developing an app for Australian models.
Additionally, this should’ve been designed as a compact SUV/raised hatchback and with RWD
I was also very impressed with the test drive I did. It was the least complex ev I've driving which was a good thing.

Source?
It’s easy to find on Google, but this is the press release from GWM.
Funky Cat (the Ora name for the rest of the world) platform was co-developed with BMW and will be used for the next Mini and BMW models.
Interior styling was done by BMW and GWM handles the build.

Literally very widely known if you spend 30 seconds yourself. The new Mini Cooper EV is literally built by GWM, on this platform
As reported by Top Gear UK early last year. They hated the Cat, but like the new Mini.
Which better value care can you get for that money?
Weirdly looks like an MG3 with the front end of a Porsche.
I think a Porsche got desperate and Tinder matched with a Fiat.
cheaper to copy someone then come up with an original design
It’s the Chinese way, why innovate when u can copy.
@Frozensage: Just like Apple with extra marketing on top. Samsung screen with Retina display ;)
I think it was designed by one of the former Porsche designers, can't find a reference atm
Looks to me more like a fiat and mini cross.
Looks similar because Emmanuel Derta (designer of 1970s Porsche 911) designed it.
Designed by Emanuel Derta, a former Porsche Designer, the ORA Good Cat embodies a 'Futuristic' concept, seamlessly blending timeless elegance with avant-garde design.
As opposed to the timeless classic and flowing lines of….anything toyota. Or dare I say, Japanese. Ever.
For timeless classic and flowing lines - Honda Accord Euro CL9 "Sport" (2006-07)
Yea the CL9 is actually a true timeless classic, give it a set of modern wheels and new lights the car design rocks still.
Or dare I say, Japanese. Ever.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. IMO, the Datsun 1600, 240z, 240k, KE20 Corolla, XT130 Corona, 1st Gen Civic, Mazda RX2, 3, 4, 7 et etc all have passed the test of the time for nice design, as well as many others I can't think of right now.
IMO, the Datsun 1600, 240z, 240k, KE20 Corolla, XT130 Corona, 1st Gen Civic, Mazda RX2, 3, 4, 7
These are all really good looking car, but other than RX7 (FD) non of these are timeless imo.
like you could tell they're from a specific era.
lol someone's chinese
Nissan Silvia S14, S15, R32 GTR, R35 GTR, Lexus LFA, LC500, Honda NSX, Honda S2000, Toyota Mk 4 Supra, FD RX7 and many many more.
If you have the chance, visit Lexus of Brighton they have a brand new Lexus LFA parked inside. it looks like a concept car that should be on sale 10 years from now, but the original design could be traced back to early 2000s.
Google's lexus lfa rear
Yeah uh. I'm good.
Insane engineering. Insanely bad design.
The s15 and earlier rx7's take the Japanese cake, I'll admit. Point is, compare anything Japanese at even remotely this price point and come back to the conversation. It's not about looks here.
That said ill grant that if it was, the winner would be the swift sport in the metallic grey. But not the hybrid. Those headlights are killer, but in true Japanese car maker style they immediately (profanity) the next generation.
I can't believe anyone gives a crap what it looks like.
well a good design is a good design, if you're already spending coins might as well get something pleasant to look at.
old boxy Mercedes had really good drag coefficient, not just for its time but even by todays standard. But there's a reason why they moved away from it, and so did other manufacturers.
You will only look at it from the inside. Why do people buy black cars when it's hotter inside & looks as funeral car outside?
You will only look at it from the inside.
if you're homeless and sleep in your car sure….
well put it this way, if you don't look at your car when you lock it and walking away from it you probably bought the wrong car.
@dukeGR4: Most people don’t even know which wheels are being driven on their car…
I must be the outlier because I kinda like how it looks. It’s a bit different.
Calm down buddy!
@Mr Bob Dobalina: So you should buy every car you like the look of?
@djkelly69: If you come online and announce to the world that you like something, then yes, I think you should be prepared to buy it. If I said that I like Arnott's biscuits, wouldn't it be unusual if I wasn't willing to buy them?
@Mr Bob Dobalina: All @jackary said was they kinda like how it looks, not it’s the best car ever and I’m telling everyone to buy one. Then you come swinging in on your I’m a tool branch.
@BatmanAU: Damn, I step away from my phone for 15 minutes to make coffee…
@jackary: Crazy right, can’t believe you made a brew and didn’t make everyone else make their own at the same time, sheesh! 😂
@jackary: so marry your coffee then if you like it so much.
@unco: His coffee is ugly. I’m about to go buy one for $10 with pretty coffee art on it. Everyone else should do that right now.
I'm just saying that people should put their money where their mouth is
You win the most retarded comment of the day award. 'iF yOu LiKe ThE lOoK Of SoMeThInG yOu MuSt BuY iT!!!'
Where on the doll did the EV technology touch you ?
On his exhaust…
I agree, it is a bit quirky and different. The side and rear profile I much prefer.
Agree, looks way better than the mg.
Just drove passed one in that green colour, not sure why the hate on it's looks, it's like something you would commute around a Mediterranean island on.
I find it has character and charm that most new cars just don't.
Its like the bastard child of a nissan micra and porsche
Personally not in a good way
I like its look but I’d never buy it after taking it for a spin. Not for everyone and it’s not a car you can take road tripping often if that’s what peeps are into
Yes, modern retro style. A 'lifestyle' car.
Was not meant to look like a Prius/Leaf or every SUV.
my kia optima 2004 0-100 probably above 30s, maybe a minute. it takes 10 s just to react to throttle
Those had 2.7L V6s. They should be reasonably quick.
9.4s from my search, not very punchy
Isn’t one of the MGs the cheapest EVs?
