Too expensive for a Halloween costume property

  • +51

Looking like a goose in public : Priceless.

    • +36

I personally would just wear an N95 mask. But wouldn’t judge others for wearing one. Why do you care what other people wear in public? Did you forget the real world isn’t high school?

      • +31

Big difference between wearing a N95, vs $400 RRP monstrosity that no decent or rational person would unless they seeking much needed attention their parents denied them growing up.

        • +7

          I beg to differ

        • +20

Same can be said about $650 RM Williams, $500 Patagonia vests, $1000 Garmins

          • +8

@tightm8: Pretty sure the headphones won't last 15 years, which is what my RMs and Patagonia vest are going on.

            • @rumblytangara: If you want to spend lots of money on something it is a choice.
It does not mean it is a necessary choice.
I like minimalist shoes, but I am happy to buy cheap ones.
I am really after function, (though looks does matter).
              Does the mask work?

            • +11

@rumblytangara: RM Williams bought today will be lucky to last 2 years.

There's a YouTuber who pulls apart boots for a living and he said the RM Williams were one of the worst he has seen yet for the price. The leather thickness has been downgraded so much that it now measures the same as a pair of Nike or Adidas sports shoe.

The boot construction, materials used and stitching were extremely poor.

              • +7

@KRM123: I once bought an expensive pair of Lloyds 'buffalo' leather lace-up office shoes

within about 6 months something had come off - maybe the sole was worn or pulled off - I forget

anyway I took them to an Italian craftsman-type shoe repairer

he took one look at them and started getting angry - I was 'huh - what's going on … '

he said 'These are rubbish!' - I was 'Huh !? - I paid top price for these' - he said they used to be good - but since some takeover, they had kept the price high and reduced the quality.

so - 'you get what you pay for' is a phrase used by scam salespeople to select people who assume high price means high quality - sorry folks, it ain't necessarily so.

                • @Hangryuman: Did they suggest which brand was good?

              • +6

@KRM123: That would be Rose Anvil who you're talking about who is useless as a reviewer.
He has been doing those videos for like 3-4 years now and still either just makes shit up or spews misinformation.

If you watch a few of his videos you'll also notice a lot of contradictions where the same thing on one pair of shoes is a positive whereas on the next pair of shoes its the worst thing in the world.
Seems to completely depend on whether he is getting paid or not for a particular video.

Whether you like RM or not, whatever.
But, they're nowhere near as bad as you seem to be claiming and when you look at them vs comparable goodyear welted boots they're still competitively priced, made from quality parts and are made in Australia.
This is especially true when there are regular deals for them that make them even more competitive compared to the budget options from overseas.

              • @KRM123: Yes, but they say RM Williams

          • @tightm8: All of those things do what they advertise, this thing doesn't filter Jack and it looks stupid too

          • @tightm8: Yeha but RM williams look good and i dont own any.

        • +3

read the details, you can detach the filter, then looks like normal headphones. question is do they sound good for $200 ? the filter is if you are crowded high risk locations, like peak hour train in winter people are standing and coughing and sneezing 30cm from your face and don’t cough into sleeve or hanky because they are holding the overhead rail with one hand and trying the use phone with the other hand.

          • -1

@garage sale: so … you wear the headphone over your nose … ?

otherwise a winky dinky something on your effing headphones ain't gonna filter nothing from a crowded moving train carriage

I'm guessing Dyson headphones will sound as good as a Dyson vacuum cleaner of toilet fan hand dryer 😷

        • +3

Yeah sure. You have anyone in your family who has cancer and is immune suppressed? I thought not. It isn't funny for them getting infections like COVID-19! Nothing irrational about trying to stay alive.

It makes me feel better about myself

          🚩

          • -2

@PainToad: i think about the lazy boy song “underwear go inside the pants” , go up to a bum in the street and say “why don’t you get a job” , get a girlfriend and a puppy and go for a run a long the beach, “if everybody grows up with high self esteem who will dance in strip clubs” the song mentions many. ways to make yourself feel good about yourself.

          • -2

@PainToad: yes - wearing them helps you stand out in a crowd

            as the biggest sucker 😊

      • +2

I know it's wrong but sometimes I can't help but judge. Like with furries.

      • +4

Whether this is effective at stopping viruses or not, there is an emerging new virus coming from china, using covid as an example, if this virus breaks out. The price of this item will increase/sell out.

        Maybe worth investing.

        • -2

Is there any evidence that it can prevent viruses when even face masks can't prevent Covid?

          • +4

            @elektron:

            face masks can't prevent Covid

            is the new

jet fuel can't melt steel beams

Because people should be ashamed to wear dumb stuff

        • -1

i said that to a homeless person on centre link that he should be ashamed to wear dumb stuff , not sure he can afford my stylist.

    • +4

Well yes, but an extremely useful extra for the typical gamer’s room.

    • +15

To be fair, AirPods looked like tampons in your ears when they first came out.

      • +26

        TBF they still do.

        • +11

          Airpons

        • +2

I used to think they looked like the Cameron Diaz scene from Theres Something About Mary

I still do, but I used to, too.

      • -1

i feel i need to invest in a wifi jammer for when i’m on a crowded train so people don’t have conversations into their airpods when standing next to me and speaking directly into my ear.

        • sounds like a job for your elbow

          • @Hangryuman: I sometimes talk into my phone although there is no call louder than the person next to me with statements like "so when I get home will we have sex before or after dinner or both before and after and are you on time or running late" and hope they get the hint … seems Vline for regional services has "quiet carriages" people can book, no phone conversations.

        • +1

Better off with a Bluetooth jammer if you want the AirPods to stop working.

      • you're not wrong but this is a bit too much still haha

    • Geezus these are funny, though I also think ppl going for a run (or walk, but particularly running) in over ear headphones are also hilarious…

“Just because you can, don’t mean you should.”

    • “Just do it”

  • Looks like only available on jbhifi online. Not even from dyson online store. May be they knew people will return these with 45 day money back guarantee offer if purchased.

  • +3

    $199 too much still

    • +3

      Yep, $99… perhaps…

      • +4

Would you wear it in public even if you were given them for free?

        • +3

          If Free, yes

        • +4

Sure, if for free. Definitely on a plane.

          • +2

            @aparasher: man that's a good idea

            • +2

@confidantduk: Flew to Bangkok amd a.lady in the cabin was coughing really badly. Would be great tonhave a personal air purifier in such a use case.

              • @aparasher:

Would be great tonhave a personal air purifier in such a use case

Have you ever heard of N95?

          • @aparasher: What’s the runtime on a full charge? Most international flights are over 9hrs

            • @pongie: As I mentioned l, I will have it for free. So I don't have it.

I simply use a personal purifier that hangs around neck.

            • +1

@pongie: Most international flights have usb ports for charging.

        • Without the mask, sure.

      • $99 if they pay me to wear it

  • +10

Didn't this have some crazy rrp? The reviews for the audoo/ANC are good. Tempted to buy one.

  • +3

i might give it a go, it has noise cancelling and the front part can be taken off to avoid looking weird.

    • +1

      500+ grams

      • +6

In context that is twice the weight of other ANC headphones. Might not sound like much but it does make a difference on long listening sessions or when you are moving around.

        • yeah my gaming headset (gsp670) is on the heavy side and weighs 400grams. Fine for sitting down and gaming, but not something I'd wear if I was moving around a lot

        • +1

my best ANC Bose QC45 headphones weigh 247gms and are very comfortable for my recent 10-hour flight and on special cost me $164

these $199 on special Dyson headphones are likely to be uncomfortable when you realise other people in public looking at you like you're an idiot

          • @Hangryuman: and apparently 650g on your head makes sure your neck gets a good work out pulling those Gs at take off and landing

        • Yeah weight is a let down even without the front air mask. Also battery life may not be as great. The bulky side of it is also a negative I do like to give these a go as I do collect headsets.

    • +4

Theres so much weird out there, that nobody would even look twice

      • I guarantee you’d get stared at wearing these. These are beyond weird.

    • +1

      Have tried them.
Noise cancelling is great and a quick tap to go to transparency mode so you can hear is pretty amazing too.
If you think it’s comparable at that price range go for it.

  • +12

The correct Price for this should be $9.99 ($190 for the embarrassment)

  • +2

Apparently the sound is pretty decent, even or $500+ headphones. I'd give them a go but they seem too heavy to be comfortable.

  • +6

There are cheaper ways to cosplay as Bane, but to each their own I guess

  • +1

according to the review the sound is surprisingly good. but its still too heavy.

  • +5

    Test your might

  • +18

Based on a quick round of various online reviews
    Pros:
    * build quality
    * sound supposedly not bad, competing with the top dogs in the category
    * top tier noise cancelling (we'll see about that)
    * price drop

    Cons:
    * Bane cosplay (pro?)
    * absolute massive unit of a headphone, even with the mask off
    * weight, more than half a kilo on your head
    * battery life is very short with purification on, not that anyone actually uses it

    Needless to say, bought

    • +2

Same. It's a bargain for the headphones quality, especially given they were originally $1000

      • +14

80% off and I'm still hesitating

        • If it helps, they were 1000 Euros in Europe and 1000 USD in the US at launch.

      • +9

And this is exactly why they put these utterly ridiculous initial RRPs on things. Reactions like this.

        • +2

It wasn't really an RRP – they were actually sold for that intiailly (and even still fairly high on most websites). This is a clearance price given they didn't sell well.

        • To be fair, dyson never positioned themselves as a budget brand.

And while this product is a major flop by any metric, they priced in the R&D cost and what you get is a funky engineering marvel.

    • i’m tempted at this price …

  • +8

    Autobots, roll out!

    • +3

      It doesn’t protect against covid.

    • +1

It is not N95 grade. But what it will definitely be useful for bush fire smokes which more likely happen every summer.
