                      • @elektron: Very convenient feauture to have. Any headphones with ots/multipoint you recommend?

                        • @ATTS: Sony WH-1000XM5, it's my portable pair at the moment as they are not as heavy as the Dyson.

                        • @ATTS: All modern headphones from the major brands have had multipoint for a few years now. If you can get a Sony WH-1000XM5 for a good price (e.g. factory seconds that come up on here quite often), I'd recommend them, they are a workhorse and have the best microphone quality for calls, if you're planning to use them for that. The app aslo has a ton value-adding features for you to explore. But this would still cost you more than the Zone.

If you don't mind using earbuds, one of the cheapest and best options with multipoint might be the original Pixel Buds Pro. You can find them at a decent price, since a new version came out recently (albeit with a price increase).

                          • @elektron: Thanks man

                            Might wait for the
                            Sony WH-1000XM5 you recommended

                            Thanks for the pixel suggestion

                • @ATTS: Just keep in mind that you need the app to update the firmware. I was prompted to update the firmware the first time I connected to the app.

                  • @elektron: Can i connect to phone to update the firmware with phone and then "forget" the device and connect to pc? And then repeat when new firmware released

      • quite a few, just a couple examples: Focal Bathys, Sony WH-1000XM5. I own them too and have been using Bathy and 1000xm5 for the last couple of years.

  • +3

They sound really good to my ears, blow my wh1000xm3 out the water.

  • +2

I jumped the gun and bought Absolute+ yesterday. Now it got shipped.

    • +1

Think you mean the opposite. You bought the not Absolute+
I think JBHifi may cop a few returns..

      • i mean explorer case version of Dyson Zone.

        • Are you wanting the quarter turn version instead? Would be happy to swap my quarter turn for your explorer (if I don't return them).

          • @caprimulgus: Oh. Well that one only just went on sale so unsure you jumped the gun as the other was up for days first!
The explorer seems the one to get which perhaps highlights why they put it up for sale later. Worth it for the extra filters (whether you use them or not), the double ended charging cable and the plane adaptor. Suspect the case will also be slightly easier to travel with though both look huge.

  • I read on whirlpool that these are on par with Momemtum 4?

  • +2

I have the wh1000xm3, 4 and 5. They sound great when compared to these. I'd say on par with the 4. Not quite as good as the 5. In terms of build quality. They are better than my wh1000xm5. But they are heavy. The hard case one that i received yesterday is heavy too. So overall not the lightest thing to travel with. But then again the case will protect them. I reckon it's a bargain. I won't be using the filter feature but then again you don't need to.

    • How about the noise cancelling? I found the ANC of recently bought Bose QC SC quite disappointing, compared to Airpods Pro 2. And the comfort of wearing it for like 1-2 hours in summer?

      • +1

The ANC on the Dyson works well when compared to my Sony's

        • +1

the ANC is not as good as the 1000XM5 and even the 1000XM4 in my opinion.

          • @xmchen: Yes, but the ANC on the Dyson will be good enough for the vast majority of people, just like the sound quality of the Sony's will be good enough for the vast majority of the people.

    • Thanks for the feedback.
wh1000XM4 was $280 ATL, so these at $200 is a good price.
But concerned about the weight. I guess you can only wear these sitting down and not for long periods?

    • Just curious what is filter feauture?

    • I disagree completely regarding the comparison with the XM5. The Sony's are decent in terms of sound quality, but sound quite compressed compared to the Zone. As I and others have mentioned, they are in the same league as Focals, not the Sony's.

Having said that, I agree with all of your other comments.

  • Are these alright for video conferencing?

    • I used them for a work meeting today and they were completely fine, but i have a strong preference for multipoint headsets. The microphones are decent, but they're not XM5's - nothing is though to be fair.

      • Thanks man will probs get the xm5 also

Hi all, just found this teardown for those interested. Taken at face value a few interesting points.
Weight is stated at 0.93lbs without the mouthpiece or filtration system which is about the same as my focal elegia, which I don't find heavy. So if you dare to remove it there's a pretty reasonable weight headset in there.
Batteries are in the headband and are double the capacity of the apple airpods max.
Few other tidbits in there too.

  • Used mine for a day now , 3.5 hours In the morning and 3.5 hours in the night using trains etc.
    Sound quality good .
Comfort terrible ,Ears felt crushed after 45 minutes each time. They are heavy 550 grams without visor. Wrapped around your neck when not listening was so uncomfortable with the massive ear cups sticking into your chin.
But the killer feature is they are almost impossible to turn off. Tried many times after morning commute, and thought they were off but then 10 hours later I put them on for home trip and they were still on. When I arrived home it took 30+ minutes of trying to get them to turn off
I know I won't use them again, can you just walk into any jb to return them?

    • +1

They seem to have specific returns policies around headphones so hope you can return them…appreciate the thoughts though.

    • +1

Just press the button on the left earcup for 5 seconds and they turn off completely. Press again for 2 seconds to turn back on. Easy.

    • Just curious did it take you 30 mins to turn of even when refering to the manual

      • Tried the 5 seconds many times, would even beep. Take off. Walk away , then a few minutes after it would take the audio again as still on.

        • It makes two different sounds. The first one is high pitched and puts it in standby mode, The second one, if you keep holding for another couple of seconds, is different, and powers it off.

  • +11

Received mine yesterday and here's my thoughts:
Preface, I'm not picky about audio but I have had a wide range of different headphones. Though the closest comparisons I have here is the Focal Bathys (I'll call it Bath) and Bose QC ultra Earbuds. I also tend to listen on the quiet side, I say this because from experience certain headphones just sound better on louder volumes (i.e. any of the biodynamic driver)

Test is mostly done using youtube music with AAC codec through my android phone.

    Sound Quality:
    * Typical V shaped, there isn't any particular genre that it's bad at (good instrument separation for busy tracks, enough bass, good clarity on vocal). But on the other hand it also means there's nothing is particularly excel at, so a good all rounder.
    * Little bit sibilant (ssssss), unfortunately EQ does not offer much control at all (three preset, default preset is "enhanced", which is extra V, I've since put it to neutral, the other one is BASS BOOSTED)
    * Detail is good. Not as good as Bath, much better than QC earbuds ultra.
    * Imaging quite good
    * Remember at the start I said I enjoy lower volumes? This is good time to bring it up because it sounds like ass in higher volumes (around 72db, still under the recommended limit apparently). Bass doesn't get punchier but instead instruments just start to mush together. The impression of clarity created by the sibilance is starting to become its biggest downfall. For busy tracks, its has lost its detail and resolution, what you get is just a mess. So for this volume, its only good for specific genres instead of a all rounder. But at this point I'm comparing it against higher-end headphones, so if we take a step back, its still quite good.
    * Overall, I'd enjoy using it

    Comfort:
    * It's on the heavy side, but the weight is only one of the factor to comfort. For example I found Beyerdynamic T1 to be the most uncomfortable despite only 360g and wrapped in thick foam, because for some reason it creates a hot spot on my heat at the top. Similarly Bath is also only 350g, also sometimes gives me a hot spot. So comfort is not bad at all (there are heavier headphones out there folks!)
    * I've only worn them for around 2hour sitting down, but I can see myself going longer
    * Definitely won't be moving around too much in this thing
    * Material used for headband and earcup could have longevity issues, but that's only guessing
    * Overall, comfortable enough but only if you have a strong neck

    Noise Cancelling:
    * It's good, not Bose (not even QC ultra earbuds) level but in return the white noise is not as bad
    * Better than Bath for sure
    * Does not adequately cancel out the noise of the fan if you're using air purifying feature, you gonna need to blast your music instead
    * More than good enough for normal use but I'd still take Bose for traveling (personally a huge fan of Bose's comfort as well)

    Other notable mentions:
    * App is cool, most interesting part is it shows the internal and external sound level. This is the first time I realised my preferred listening volume is around 39db. I can see this can actually help people not listen to extreme volume for extended period (protect your hearing, peeps)
    * Case is a interesting design, even has room to shove in the visor.
    * No easy way to turn it off (maybe I'm just dumb)? I think they wanted the user experience to be like the Airpods pro max S plus utlra 5G where you just don't think about it. Personally I think it's a good direction but whether that's well implemented we'll see
    * Air purifying is a gimmick but not too awkward to use (they really did put some thought into the user experience), and I think it might actually come in handy in areas with worse pollution

overall, I'd say it's well worth the 200 dollarydoos, because you can do a lot worse for more money.
For me this is strictly a indoor headphone due to the weight and way it looks (duh), otherwise the weight practicality it's a very versatile all rounder that should satisfy almost all circumstances.

    So if you're someone who:
    * is looking a do-it-all headphone
    * is looking for mostly indoor use
    * have a strong neck
    * does not listen as high volumes
I'd say this is a very strong candidate as long as you can deal with the weight (and looking like a tool)

Its easily a keeper for me

Thank you for coming to my tedXtalk

    • +3

Forgot to mention about transparency mode:
      * This works very well for speech, exceptionally well for my own voice (I hate the feeling of hearing my own voice in my head)
      * But you'd still hear the thumps when walking (again, indoor headphone)
      * Switches between isolation and transparency instantly,
      * when you lift down the visor it switch to transparency, looks like Dyson really hoped people take this outside
      * double tap the side (the transparent plastic) changes the mode, but you need to really tap hard

    • I couldn't easily get it to turn off, trying at 1:30 in the morning for over 30 minutes was the last straw.

      • +2

I think they wanted the user experience to be like the Airpods pro max S plus utlra 5G where you just don't think about it. Personally I think it's a good direction but whether that's well implemented we'll see

Long story short, just use it like normal and don't worry about turning on or off. They go on standby mode so you don't need to worry about battery, and the battery life is ridiculously long anyway so the whole point from a user experience's perspective is that you don't think about the battery at all

        • +1

I've got the heaphones and really love them - I'm impressed!

What's not impressive is that the "standby" mode just stops the music - they're still connected to my Android phone, stealing all the audio.

Turning them off is easy - hold the fan button for 5 seconds, and then they beep (really loudly - what the hell is with the volume of the system tones??) and turn off.

If you hold that button for 2 seconds it goes into pairing mode, so just hold longer!

  • I wonder if this would be great to have as a cleaner.

  • +2

Mine just arrived. It's hard to overstate just how premium the packaging is. Certainly they look $1k worth haha. They are heavy. Just kicking off testing vs what I have which is Bose QC35, Focal Elegia and Senn 599.

Having a few volume issues on the pixel but right now it's Elegia > Zone > QC35
note: I do have a Qudelix 5k so both Elegia and Zone are using oratory tune.

Oh and the 599 sound much better than they should but they're open backed so not sure it's fair to include…

    • Weight wise (too lazy to find my better travel scales) they're 0.57kg, Elegia are 0.46kg and qc35 0.24kg

    • They do feel heavy and package does look nice

Btw we wasnt given a manual or charging plug only a usb c to usb c cable

Is that normal? Not even sure how to turn on and off yet any easy guides?

      • I already have too many USB cables, so haven't bothered checking whether The cable was there and haven't opened the visor either.

As for the quick start guide, I usually just ask Gemini - sorted the power off issue in about 2 seconds and provided the answer in this thread previously.

      • On off is push fan button. Off is push it for 5 seconds.

        • Just make sure you keep pressing it past the first high-pitched beep, which is triggered at 3 seconds and is for standby only.

  • Do you guys leave the activated carbon and silica gel in the case

    • Nope

  • just used it today the mask is very smelly. looks like no one comments on the air purifier function

    • +2

      Noone bought it for that

    • Smelly after you used it? 😂

      • no plastic or rubber smell

    • FWIW my mask isn't smelly.

      • Mine does smell a bit from brand new, smell will go away after a while.

  • +1

Anyone tried to return these? I enquired online and they said to take it back to a store within 30 days if order.

    • +2

They gotta be unopened otherwise they won't take them back

    • Per comment above, unopened they're saying I can take back within 30 days so I'm returning (next week) the non-absolute set and keeping the other.

      • Given the price rise and the better case, will you still return the original set?

    • Used them for a day, they were a nightmare to turn off. Took them back to local JB store the next day and they organised a refund.
      Refund processed today.
I've gone back to the much more comfortable , better sound bang & Olufsen headphones.

      • +1

I just press the button on the left cup and they tun on with no issues.

I have the B&O H95 (and H8i) and they don't sound as good as the Zone or the Focal Bathys, which I also have, mostly due to a profound lack of clarity. The H95 are also the only headphones (and I've owned a lot over the years) that have fallen apart only after a few months of daily use for office works - I've exchanged them twice.

  • +2

Sounds really good with some EQ. I'm using Wavelet on Android and imported the settings from
here. Just download the GraphicEQ.txt and import to Wavelet. I'm using the default 'Enhanced' EQ profile in the MyDyson app. This has significantly reduced the sibilance.

Surprisingly, the weight has not really been an issue as it is still very comfortable but the bulkiness is more bothersome. I'm just wondering if the Dyson OnTrac outer caps would be compatible with the Zone considering the cups should be, but otherwise it seems relatively easy to disassemble via the iFixit video and friction fitting a 3D printed cap should do the trick.

One other minor issue is swapping between devices - the MyDyson app seems to bug out whenever I swap and may require rebooting the headphones.

Overall though I am very satisfied with this purchase, and at this price and with EQ completely mogs my XM5s in terms of sound. Will definitely be using at home but unsure if quite ready for on the go use.

    • +1

Check in earlier posts. Someone shared a 3d printed cover for these.

  • +2

Random thought - wondering if anyone in LA fires used the Dyson headphones! Imagine they get featured in a news clip and these weirdo looking headphones with air purifying feature become the next viral sensation!

  • Price is back to 399$ now.

    • I was hoping these would be further discounted to $100, as I believe they are hardly worth $200 because of their weight.

      • +2

That was probably wishful thinking given they were already “on sale” and not “clearance”.

Thinking of keeping both pairs now?

        • +1

I will keep the Zone Absolute for sure.

          • @happydragon: I bought the regular and then the Absolute+ so i’m on the fence weather to return the regular one.

            • +1

@abc: I just returned the regular one. No dramas at all fyi. Kept the absolute+

    • A friend tried asking for the sale price with my receipt, and apparently "They said that they are no longer supported by the supplier at that price"

      • I wonder what cost price was.

      • Do you think they'd be willing to exchange in-store, the Zone for the Zone Absolute+?

        • I don't think there are any instore? They were being sent from their central warehouse, which is why I couldn't get a store transfer click-and-collect.

          Worth a shot though?

          • @Droz: Yeah exactly. I'll give it a go though, maybe I'll try their online chat first. They've been pretty helpful so far.

  • Lol, so many (attempting) to flog these via marketplace. Wonder how many listings will get taken down after 30 days (when the JB return window closes)! :)

    • And eBay. Lol

  • +1

Received mine last week, and I think they sound incredible!

    Top-tier office headphones.

  • +4

Have been using my Dyson headphones now for over a week and can say they are really nice. They feel heavy but you get used to it quickly. Noise isolation is good. ANC is okay. Not the best but okay.
Sound quality is good. The headset's microphones are also good. Ive been using them for online Teams and Facetime calls. Works well.
Quality of the headphones is excellent. They should last a long time. Only downside going forward will be how to source replacement batteries.

  • +8

Nobody will read this, but I removed the fans and support housing and they're significantly lighter now. It's pretty straight forward, just a few tiny hex screws and couple of clips. There is a 3-pin connector on the fan, its pretty tough to remove so take care.. or just rip them out and dont worry about it

    https://imgur.com/a/ZHV7kvP

    • +1

Thanks for posting the photos! That housing looks pretty solid.

    • I read it! Will be doing this later today

    • Cheers - yeah, I had watched the teardown video, and it seemed to be pretty easy. Except, in the teardown, dude flipped them over halfway, and started ripping up PCB connections, so I was only 99% sure it would be fine to remove the fans without doing that! Lol.

      So thanks for confirming! :)

  • +2

I did some cleaning in my courtyard the other day. It's pretty dusty so I normally wear a mask, which gets pretty stuffy and sweaty after a while. This time I used the Dyson Zone and it's far cooler - no stuffy face, and the light breeze is a bit cooling on the face too.

The problem is, my ears then get warm. Can't win them all! I still prefer it over a mask though, as I'm not breathing moist air out through my ears.

      Worth it for $200

      • +9

        Nah.

        • Can you find a decent headphones for $199? I bet you can't.

          • +3

            @Dumpshid: Depends what you're after.

Audio-Technica ATH-S300BT are incredibly good at $194 from amazon.

If money is tight, the Behringer BH480NC Reference-Class Headphones at $109 is also amazing at its $100 price point from StoreDJ.

I know im not the OP, but do I win anything in this bet?

            • @MasterScythe: Behringer? giggle

              • @eug: Behringer are a funny brand. Some stuff is in house developed and actually good (reference stuff, midi controllers, PA speakers) , some is dropshipped, and some is ewaste.

Anything they tend to call 'reference' is never truly flat like youd expect (they're still a budget brand), but hits the high end of prosumer.

Their active PA speakers too, are amazing. When you just need reliable volume that doesnt audibly distort, goal hit.

            • +2

@MasterScythe: Have you tried Dyson zone? I have one and i am ok with the sound quality. Those headphones you mentioned, i never heard of them or tried them on so can't tell if they are better than Dyson.

You try and let me know if you win the bet or not. 😆

              • @Dumpshid: Yes, i have tried them at JB when they were new and on display.

I found them bass heavy and wildly unbalanced.
Mids seemed pumped and sparkle was lacking.

Very similar to 'Beats', with the same soundstage quirks.

                • +2

@MasterScythe: There's an equaliser, but outside of that, they're actually incredibly great headphones - the Sonos Ace, xm5s, Bose, Beats etc. all sound muddy and cheap in comparison.

Listening to music has become fun again.

These Dysons are honestly incredible, especially for the $200 price in this deal.

                  • @Droz: Ill admit they were better than any beats id tried.

But even the well known low-boost tuning from sennheisers range presented as cleaner, to me.

                    Everyone has different ears :)
