There is no CPU, GPU, or Ram specs, so it’s impossible to know what this is capable of running. My guess is not much.

    • +1

Someone below mentioned it can play up to PS1 games if that helps

  • +14

Comments from the last time it was on sale:

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/869560

I had a play in-store at a display model recently and agree with what others have said about some games lagging and slowing down. Quality of the buttons and joystick didn't seem great either unfortunately but that was expected.

    • +7

At $249, I expect good quality build and experience. At $49, I can play around and swap components as I like. The thing is I have to go to the store. The store is closed tomorrow. Then, this is pretty much for boxing day.

      • +3

If it was worth $249 they wouldn’t be selling for $49. RRP might was well stand for Rort Retail Price

      • +2

Buy first, return later with receipt if garbage.

        • Or buy first, research later.
If not happy, dont collect and they will refund in 2 weeks.
          Better than FOMO

  • -3

    Any good?

    • +3

      Compared to the previous version:
      - no licensed games
      - long loading times
      - hard to navigate menu
      - no instructions on how to put your own games

      • +2

        No thanks 🙂‍↔️

For those interested in retro gaming, there are some great handhelds around. This site categorizes dozens of them with all the specs, power, OS, etc and even has a comparison feature for others. https://retrocatalog.com/
And for really brilliant reviews and even tutorials for setting some up, 'retro game corps' is the best channel on youtube I've come across. I have nothing to do with either of these places, but as a retro gaming fan I figured some here might find it worth a look. My personal recommendations if we arent going near steam decks or asus rogs etc, the Odin 2 pro, retroid pocket 5, and the RGB30 are all extremely delicious and fun to use. A little different to the above advertised device but they can be connected to a tv too.

    • It's absolutely the golden age for retro gaming handhelds

    • +1

lol bro the Odin 2 isn't cheap. I own a Retroid Pocket 5 and it has its problems too for a ~$350 device

      • Yes odin is definitely not cheap but its cheaper than a steam deck and I wanted it to play everything up to switch. With the pocket 5 it only came out recently so give it a little time to iron out its issues and it'll end up being amazing.

        • +2

It isn't a software thing with the RP5. the ergonomics are a problem for my big hands and the d-pad is not in the right place.

I was a day one pre-order person and I think it is a great device, just not perfect for me.

          • @serpserpserp: Oh thats very unfortunate. Personal comfort is something we cant predict. Just wish there were places we could pick them up and feel before buying. At least the odin 2 is gloriously comfortable.

            • @vlahka: It is ok. It really depends on what you play. Switch games are uncomfortable after awhile but retro games are fine. I will eventually get some grips from Etsy etc. But at the moment they are ridiculously expensive

      • +1

Yeep the Odin2 didn't come cheap - but compared to some of the crap we find in our retail stores for 'retro gaming' its not too bad of a value pick . I picked up a pro model last week just because I was bored and got it setup for everything up to switch. Can use it as a steamlink and PC streamer very well so it does great on that regard - definitely a big step up from using my hacked OG Vita for a lot of my emulation needs.

        • I dont regret my purchase at all and I usually fixate on things that bug me. The whole unit is amazing. And even comes with the side benefit of android gaming/apps. The only thing that would make it better would be an OLED screen. Maybe the Odin 3 will do it.

          • @vlahka: Odin 2 Portal might be what you want

            • @serpserpserp: It has a few things I dont like unfortunately. For one it heats up way too quick.

          • @vlahka: Do you do switch emulation on it? I get some random slow down on some games which is not too bad, however I can't seem to get some games to even boot up regardless of the latest yuzu and prod.keys or i forgot the other emulator i had running but it couldn't get the graphics to come up properly.

            • @atimuslol: I've ran some games and never had an issue. Not saying everything will definitely work though. With the slow down I've only ever seen it mentioned if you have the 8gb pro version. You need the 12gb to get the smooth gameplay. But the odin has the ability to up itself with virtual ram that fixes that if you have the 8gb model. If you want you can set the handheld to run at full power with some games. I've not used that feature so my brain cant recall the what its called.I think you can get to it from one of the pull down menus. And obviously make sure the sdcard you're using isnt a cheap slow one.

              • +1

@vlahka: Thanks mate! will defs check it out - I just changed my yuzu to a different build and 19.0 firmware, probably would be a factor as well.

    • +1

I bought a trimui brick the other day and it's great if you want a vertical handheld!

  • -7

I'm not sure it's even worth the $49 they're asking for.

  • Has anyone pulled it apart? Are the switches arcade style micro switches? Is the joystick like the https://www.jaycar.com.au/arcade-joystick-with-microswitches… one or cheap crap?

    • Unlikely, one joystick worth 29 bucks and this whole thing is 49

      • Normal price is $249. At $249 they may or may not have micro switches.

        • I don't think that's the "normal price", jaycars rpcing is dodgy as, it's not likely to ever actually be on sale for that price

  • Apparently the old versions they used to sell were loaded up with thousands of decent titles (e.g. Mortal Kombat, etc.), however you couldn't load up your own roms. The new version has a bunch of no-name and knock off games but you're able to load roms via the removable micro SD card. Presume they got stung for copyright, etc.

Have read people were having issues with plugged in game pads not working, and the controls don't seem like they're worth $249. Saying that, at $49 it's worth it for the shell alone as I believe it's relatively straightforward to replace the retro pie and customize. They used to sell the shell with controls for ~$100.

    • The old versions had Pandora 9S and the one before was Pandora 6s if I recall.
They had about 1600 arcade roms.

Yes, the empty shell one, the only thing missing was the Raspberry Pi 3b or Pi 4, it came with power supply, hdmi adapter etc, usb joystick adapter.

The new one has weird never heard of ROMs on it.

  • Hmm.. not a retro pie.. inside..
    but a customised PCB..
It would be a absolute pain in the butt to repurpose

  • I was in store today, they said not available at that price till tomorrow and wouldn't sell at $49. Had a fiddle around with it. Plays up to PS1 games. Has pretty much all the emulators installed and comes with a 32gb sd card apparently filled with games.

    • +1

      apparently filled with games.

The 50 different versions of Galaga, Space Invaders and Phoenix.

  • $50 is a steal. Got one thanks. Not sure if it will be gone later

  • +1

Available online now. I've ordered one for delivery. Hopefully it's not as dogshit as everyone says. It'll at least be a fun little project to pull apart and see how much I can repurpose.

And then I can show the kids the old games we used to play in the arcades. That'll probably last an hour before they get bored 🥱😂

  • Ordered one for delivery. Don't need it but will make a good present for a mate.

  • +4

Manual is linked below if anyone is interested in how it works.

    https://media.jaycar.com.au/product/resources/GT4286_manualM…

  • +1

    Merry Christmas me cheers op!!

  • Max SDcard is 128GB, which in the emulation scene is not that big.

I wonder if it is better than the PSC1 with AutoBleem 1.0.3 & Retroarch.

    • It could be an artificial limit due to fat32 standards. For example, the 3ds systems have a "limit" but you can just use a tool like Rufus to format a larger card as fat32 and it will work without issues.

  • So where to download the compatible ROM games? Or is that not allowed to be talked about? I’m a complete newbie in this retro gaming world but excited to tinker with it

    • Archive.org

    • +1

You can download tons of MAME roms from websites like emulatorgames.net and romsdownload.net.

I can't comment on the compatibility of this unit though.
I'll report back once I've bought one and tested.

      • +1

You legend. I’ll keep in touch 😉

  • +1

I too have impulse control issues and have purchased.

  • Thinking about buying as I have a ton of MAME, NeoGeo, etc, Roms.
    Feeling nostalgic already, thanks OP.

  • Cheers bought one c&c for the kids to connect to a 28" monitor

  • Bought one on c&c.

Can you put a raspberry pi in it coz that would be sweet?

  • It's online now too, snagged one a couple hours ago.

    • +1

Addendum: bought a second for the mother in law's bday, seemed jealous when I unwrapped a Ms. Pac-Man arcade machine last year. Thanks OP

  • Based on the menus in the picture and whatnot, this is going to be like one of the "4k game stick" type devices.

PS1 will run, a bit awkwardly, and you'll need the right file type (chd does NOT work), everything older should be right. GBA might give you the shits a bit too.

I'll be (profanity) around with mine when I get it so any questions, throw em my way

    • Just looking at the manual it seems it supports 9 other emulators other than Mame. Is there a preference to which emulators people should use or just depends on the games that are available on each emulator?

It seems the roms need to be left zipped in the downloads folder for them to work. I’m guessing this inherently slows down game loading. Not sure what type of zipped format it requires.

Also to clone to a larger 128gb sd card I assume you format to fat32 and copy all folders over.

For security I might delete the inbuilt games and content/data to a bare skeletal and just run games off downloads before plugging into internet ready TV

      • if (and I'll find out soon) it is more or less the same as the thing I have, it won't let you swap emulators, it'll be the stock ones with no real tweaking options whatsoever. Mega Drive is always easier to emulate than SNES so general rule of thumb for me anyway is if I can play a MD version, play an MD version.

Standard "right click to compress" kind of zip files work fine. .GBA, .NES, etc all worked without zips for me, only PS1 was actually selective with the files. I think pbp was one of the accepted ones (PSP used this format mostly)

Nope, again if it's the same, you'll wanna flash the whole goddamn OS to a new card, not just a drag and drop, if we can't find a copy of the OS easily, it could be a problem.

Be careful doing that, a lot of the inbuilts have photos associated with the games and deleting one or the other can stuff the whole thing. For my game stick thing, I got a new version of the OS from a Russian discord thing and it was blank, no games or anything, and the icons, names, and photos were still embedded in the actual os itself, even though the game files were gone and I couldn't play them, there was still thousands of games it thought it could play and would show me

I would like to remind people of the previous thread.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/869560

    I regret not returning mine..

the Mameroms need to be in the FB Neo format

the button reassignment doesn't work properly, cant really play any of the fighting games because of this.

the shortcut / favourites, don't work properly / so if you load lots of games on.. you have to scroll through hundreds to get to the one you want..
The 157 or so games that come with it.. are garbage.

there's going to be a lot of very disappointed ozbargainers..

On thow tricky / painful it is to get additiontal games on..

Definitely need to be computer literate.. its not some thing you can give to someone else, nor is it plug and play.

There's also a lot of input lag, on the games I've played..
I cannot get anywhere near the high score on Galaga, that I used to be able to do… pretty sure its due to input lag..

Remember to image / copy the microsd card, before fiddling with it .. it case you screw it up..

    • You paid $124.

For $49, i think its a bargain to keep the kids entertained for a few hours while working around the house

      • You are going to have aspend quite a few hours / and more.. learning about FBP neo and trying to find the correct roms. lots of trial and error involved.. little to now information on these units on the web..

Like I said… the included 157 games are useless,
most of them where third party NES games, If I remember..

Your stock standard mameroms are NOT going to work out of the box….

There's a lot of time involved.. in the set up… even then… I wasn't happy with the lag involved..

Plan to setup a retropie system instead….

        Problems

        1) Pretty useless.. as it it..
        2) Once you learnt have to get the right roms.. you might as well have set up a retropie system instead.. due to the button assignment issues and signficant input lag..

        • -2

Im sure ill find something between the 1500+ Inbuilt Games

          • +1

@easternculture: I don't think you have read through all the information…

the old ones came with 1500+ games..

all the new / current units come with 157 crap games.

NB.. Jaycar does NOT advertise any games with it. (at least with the current units)

I don't think you will find anything worthwhile playing in the 157 pieces of garbage included in the default unit..

          • @freeb1e4me: was about 2 months ago when I set it up…
even then. not happy with it..

Not stable enough to even clone my microsd to give to a friend..
Bound to get lots of complaints..

Best thing to do, is image the microsd.. and muck around with the image. not the original..

There are lots of bugs in the software.. and its hard to knows whether its becasue you screwed up the microSD, or the original software is flawed..

What we need.. is someone who has the original microsd with the 1500+ games on it.. then copy that…

            • @Kelvin: What program did you use to image the sd card? And how do you find the right roms?

You are right about the 1500+ games. Without the licensed games I feel this is $50 junk, unless you are prepared to put more money into making it rpi based

The input lag and buttons not remapping is a huge problem as well so this is going to junk I feel

Regarding finding the 1500 game rom I think you might be better posting in a forum about it. Better chance I think

              • @freeb1e4me: I really can't remember off the top of my head..
It was all part of the "experience"
luckily I had two microsd card readers, to make it easier..
I remember formating the 128gb microsd into Fat32 as a real issue
took me hours to figure it out..
I think it involved going back into the dos / command line interface..

easily, killed over 5 and 10 hours of my time, doing the initial set up.. downloading roms and testing them out.. etc…

Ulitmately.. I wasn't happy with the result in the end..
due to the input lag.. and button remapping (that doesn't work) so many of the games.. can't work..

even gutting it out and trying to reuse it for retropie, would be way too much work..
the joysticks.. aren't good enough to salvage.. and the buttons are pretty awful..

if it came with 1500+ games.. and worked out of the box.. I wouldn't have had an issues with it.. even for $129..

As it is.. it requires. a investing a lot of time and effort.. to get it up and running and seriously. the gaming experience.. was very disappointing.. due to the lag and many games.. (even simple ones)..

If your time is valuable… this is definitely not for you…
If you had the time and knowledge.. you would be investing it into something much better than this..

if only somewhere turns up the original complete microsd, could they salvage this unit….

            • @Kelvin: If someone can upload the zip file somewhere

What we need.. is someone who has the original microsd with the 1500+ games on it.. then copy that…

I just wanna play classic pacman , pinball and space invaders

              • @easternculture: Good luck!!
It ain't happening without a serious amount of effort on your part..

There's a reason why these are being sold for $49…

at least you get a HDMI cable and a 32gb microsd card…
and a USB power thingy.. if I remember..

                • -4

@Kelvin: So weird that out of the 15k clicks (at least 5000 people) who saw this deal, you are the only one complaining

                  • +1

                    @easternculture: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/869560

at $129.. i thought it was a total steal..

After investing the time and effort.. it definitely wasn't…

at $49… it would seem even better…

the parts themselves.. are worth far more than the costs..

However… it pretty much useless out of the box… … without investing the time..

A bunch of us.. have bought it already… and the comments.. are listed above (see link).

                    2 months later… its a regretful purchase..

Its big, cumbersome.. and quality isn't that great..

Many games don't work, or play poorly…
There no instructions / information on how to fix things..

Obvioiusly.. if you get the original microSD with 1500+ curated and working games.. it might be different ..

It s great price.. no doubt.. but prepared to invest time….

                    • @Kelvin: You definitely talked me out of it. Thanks.

                      • @rokufan: I reckon Kelvin is talking people out of it so he can buy more. He’s spent so much time on it that he’s now a master at retro gaming! Now further discounted to $49 he is drooling over the value it brings 😂

                        • +1

@freeb1e4me: Yeah i thought so too.

Big buyers regret when you see an all time low after buying for more than double that price.

Even for modding, totally worth the $49 price

Gonna enjoy playing around with it and see what kinda mods it takes.

                        • @freeb1e4me: Definitely no master at retro gaming..
                          ..
The input lag from the unit.. kills any chance of getting past stage 12 in galaga.
I was definitely good for stage 15, on mame in the past…
The save states and restore functions works..
though.. even with this feature, I can't get past a certain stage in "Karnov"despite using save and restore and a youtube guide..
again… I suspect the input lag on this unit .. again makes it impossible to win at the game.

Seems, that another user, has solved some of the issues.. I have had.. with the button assignments

So for the tickerer, it may be bargain…

    • I regret not returning mine..

Does anyone know Jaycar return policy on this… just in case!

      • +1

Mine came with a 16gb rather than a 32gb microsd. I recokon.. I could have got a return on it..

  • +1

Hey OP (@crazyas) you might want to edit description as this version does not have 1500+ games, so a bit misleading

  • I just picked mine up. It's huge, but I haven't opened it up or turned it on yet

  • +9

I agree with Kelvin that it is easy to be disappointed by this product out of the box.

    • There are very few (if any) worthwhile games built in.

    • The FBNeo emulator has a bug in its internal mappings which mean the the P1 L and R buttons don't work (though they are hooked up in the SFC emulator so it is not a physical wiring issue).

    • The controller mapping customisation is method is inexplicable.

    • The joysticks and buttons are nothing to write home about.

    • MAME is shown as a separate emulator but it is just a copy of the FBNeo (aka FBA) emulator.

    • FBNeo games are listed as their cryptic rom .zip file name which is ugly by comparison to the other emulators which can have nice human readable names. (See page 10 in the manual for an example of this).

    • Most emulators are fully stretched to fill the screen which makes vertical games like 1942 feel fat and gameboy games are way too big (depending on your screen).

    • The screenshots are also stretched to fill the screenshot spot so screenshots from vertical games are stretched wide.

Having said that, I bought one at $124 two months ago and bought another one today for $49.

I've spent more time than I should have reverse engineering the emulators (fbneo and gambatte) and had more hours of fun doing that that playing the games on it so YMMV.

My 7YO daughter is enjoying Sonic the Hedgehog on it so at least it is performing a bit of its intended use case.

I haven't managed to find any sort of modding community around it (and I don't really expect that we will see one form) but I have scrambled to put up a github repository today with what I have figured out. Feel free to use the Discussions feature at github to get involved.

If you you are technically minded or have time to waste, here are some things you can find at the repo so far:

    1. dat files for the FBNeo emulator (generated by the emulator). With the Arcade dat file and a recent complete mame romset and rollback romset you can build almost a complete set of FBNeo roms for this device though given the CPU and RAM constraints I wouldn't hold out hope for modern games.

    2. a screenshot of a couple of bytes to patch to enable the P1 R and P1 L buttons to work in the FBNeo emulator.

    3. a keyremap file for the (patched) FBNeo emulator that orders the 6 buttons (of each player) correctly for Street Fighter 2 (my goto).

    4. some information extracted from the running system.

    5. a list of the built-in games.

I have some proof of concept code that is too embarrassing to upload yet which I have used to improve the game list for the arcade games so that we can have the human readable game name eg "Street Fighter II - The World Warrior (910522 World)" instead of just "sf2".

I hope to polish that up and make a command line utility out of it over the Christmas break.

See the repo for more details about exploring the running OS if you care.

Thanks for the links.. and investing that crazy amount of effort, it must have taken for the button assigment issues

You have saved many people a bucketload of time…
and perhaps.. many of these from the hard rubbish bin..

@nk64 Can I suggest making a clone img available after each update so that people can just use that rather than doing all the changes themselves and run the risk of doing something wrong. The clone image would not have anything in rom downloads to make the img not too big. Then have the mame roms available as separate downloads.

And BTW, great work you are doing!

I have updated the repository with some pictures and details of the internal hardware.

    • Do I just replaced the keyremap file with the one from GitHub?

How do I go about patching FBNeo emulator? Do you have an already patched file?

      • +2

At this stage I just have a picture of the bytes you have to change in red (3 locations, 6 bytes). The file you have to edit is emus\fbneo\fbneo. but back it up somewhere first.

I use a program called HxD to edit binary files.

I don't plan to upload any of their files (or modified versions) to the repository but I hope to build a command line utility that can perform the patch and other tweaks that come up.

As for the keyremap file, backup the existing keyremap/fbneo.keymap file and then replace it with the one from the repo (you will have to remove the ".sf2+patchedemu" from the file name of course.

That shouldn't be hard to do. Thanks

I have updated the repository with details of the emulators and the systems they (may) support

    • The ide connector for the controls looks like the same one on the retropie version of this same product
      https://www.jaycar.com.au/raspberry-pi-retro-arcade-game-con…

I am wondering if buying a raspberry pie and connecting it would be easier

      • While they look the same, I don't think that anyone has confirmed that the pins that it would plug in to would be safe and safe/useable/appropriate ones on the Raspberry Pis GPIO Header.

You might be better off doing this mod (or something similar) if you are handy with a soldering iron then you can use the deck as a 2P USB controller for whatever computer you want to plug it into.

Alternatively Jaycar seems to be selling a product similar to what you describe.
        https://www.jaycar.com.au/raspberry-pi-retro-arcade-game-con…

    • How did you get the Raspberry Pi 4 with the 10" arcade machine? The one from Jaycar for $64 doesn't come with any Pi.

      • I purchased it separately
        It’s in my post

  • Hi, hope you are all well, had a great Xmas and looking forward to the new year.
Purchased 1 today at jaycar, probably all sold out was not many when I arrived at opening time.
I did a tear down and inside is a PCB board, not an entry level raspberry pi. It runs Android according to boot up.
I did a disassembly of all parts, wires etc without damage. I removed my raspberry pi 4 I purchased separately from the 10” arcade gaming screen with joystick control and case from Jaycar when they had them on special at last sale for $64. It has a 10” screen, a power brick, HDMI, audio out port and a internal speaker.
I will use the raspberry pi for another project.
Replaced original joystick and buttons in 10” gaming monitor with one from the $49 on sale today. Removed all wires from joystick 2 with a fine pin as they are not needed inside my case.
I just need to fit PCB inside on bottom base with motherboard risers and drill holes in back of case for output ports that are on the back of PCB. Graphics look good in correct screen ratio without missing characters on screen or stretched graphics. One issue I encountered, sound is carried via the HDMI port but not working even know the 10” gaming case has HDMI in, a internal speaker, a speaker out port and hoping it may be just a setting in the menu on the 10” gaming unit. Will search for roms, games for this unit as the ones included are so so on the included 32GB micro SD card. I don’t care about warranty it’s only $49, you can not even get a decent meal now in restaurants for that money today.
Not bad I have a portable 10” arcade machine for $113 complete with spare joysticks, buttons, wiring harness. If you require more info etc just post here. Take care, c ya.

    • So you used the joysticks of this with the 10" arcade machine?

I still have 2 in the box.

Could you post a complete guide please when you have a minute

      • Hi, I removed original joystick and buttons from the 10” arcade machine and installed one from the $49 retro as the position of the wires in the harness are in different locations, and now have 2 sets of spare joysticks and buttons.

Why would you replaced the joystick and buttons from this $49 machine and installed in another machine which already has very similar joystick and buttons? I mean the quality would be very similar right?

          • @HandsomeMonkey: Yes very similar only minor differences. Wiring harness has to be rewired or the joystick and buttons will not work as the negative and positive wires are in the opposite direction on the switches and the black block connector has to be rewired, it’s easier and quickest just to use the harness from the $49 machine.

      • Hi, read my post throughly, I encountered sound issue as stated in HDMI but might be a setting in the menu of the $64 arcade machine and have not worked it out as yet as i has internal speakers and audio out port. I am drilling holes in back of case for PCB outputs,
You need to take one button off at a time and rewire it correctly, I thought of taking photos of the wiring colour but it was easier and quicker to do one by one.

FBNEO 1.0.0.3 Best Set seemed to work well.
For 49 dollars I can forgive its shortcomings
    Couple of weird things
It doesn't seem to do sega master system even though picodrive supports it
PSX seems to need img files?

I'd love to work out how to and more emulators. Really want to be able to put C64 on there as well

Thanks @nk64 for the updated keymap. Saves me a lot of time

Oh and be careful doing a system reset. It wipes all your downloaded roms on your sd card

I have what I think are Sega Master System roms that work (eg Wonderboy). They have to go in the MD (folder).

I don't hold out much hope for getting to the stage of compiling software for this hardware myself, let alone modifying the source code of an existing emulator to suit it.

I also think that we are not likely to find an existing piece of hardware that this is a close enough clone of to be able to copy pre-compiled binaries from them onto this but I will be very happy to be proven wrong.

    • It also contains a folder of sample games as well but tells you to install it in a different location to the games 🤔.

I tried Mortal Kombat 1 and it works OK. Mortal Kombat 2 crashes to menu - not sure why. I was looking forward to MK2!

I just hooked mine up and could see 1619 games listed with the first being 1941 on FBA.
Played Pocket Fighter and Wonderboy after that.
I must have gotten some old stock from the original version or they put an old card in mine.

It shows 741 games in FBA and 32 in MAME which is really odd if the MAME entry is just a copy of FBA. Why would they have it set up like this?

      Jackpot!!
I think, you are going to have alot of potential new friends from ozbargain.
