There is no CPU, GPU, or Ram specs, so it’s impossible to know what this is capable of running. My guess is not much.

    • Someone below mentioned it can play up to PS1 games if that helps

Comments from the last time it was on sale:

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/869560

I had a play in-store at a display model recently and agree with what others have said about some games lagging and slowing down. Quality of the buttons and joystick didn't seem great either unfortunately but that was expected.

At $249, I expect good quality build and experience. At $49, I can play around and swap components as I like. The thing is I have to go to the store. The store is closed tomorrow. Then, this is pretty much for boxing day.

If it was worth $249 they wouldn’t be selling for $49. RRP might was well stand for Rort Retail Price

Buy first, return later with receipt if garbage.

        • Or buy first, research later.
If not happy, dont collect and they will refund in 2 weeks.
          Better than FOMO

    Any good?

    • +2

      Compared to the previous version:
      - no licensed games
      - long loading times
      - hard to navigate menu
      - no instructions on how to put your own games

        No thanks 🙂‍↔️

For those interested in retro gaming, there are some great handhelds around. This site categorizes dozens of them with all the specs, power, OS, etc and even has a comparison feature for others. https://retrocatalog.com/
And for really brilliant reviews and even tutorials for setting some up, 'retro game corps' is the best channel on youtube I've come across. I have nothing to do with either of these places, but as a retro gaming fan I figured some here might find it worth a look. My personal recommendations if we arent going near steam decks or asus rogs etc, the Odin 2 pro, retroid pocket 5, and the RGB30 are all extremely delicious and fun to use. A little different to the above advertised device but they can be connected to a tv too.

It's absolutely the golden age for retro gaming handhelds

    • +1

lol bro the Odin 2 isn't cheap. I own a Retroid Pocket 5 and it has its problems too for a ~$350 device

      • Yes odin is definitely not cheap but its cheaper than a steam deck and I wanted it to play everything up to switch. With the pocket 5 it only came out recently so give it a little time to iron out its issues and it'll end up being amazing.

        • +1

It isn't a software thing with the RP5. the ergonomics are a problem for my big hands and the d-pad is not in the right place.

I was a day one pre-order person and I think it is a great device, just not perfect for me.

    • I bought a trimui brick the other day and it's great if you want a vertical handheld!

I'm not sure it's even worth the $49 they're asking for.

  • Has anyone pulled it apart? Are the switches arcade style micro switches? Is the joystick like the https://www.jaycar.com.au/arcade-joystick-with-microswitches… one or cheap crap?

    • Unlikely, one joystick worth 29 bucks and this whole thing is 49

      • Normal price is $249. At $249 they may or may not have micro switches.

  • Apparently the old versions they used to sell were loaded up with thousands of decent titles (e.g. Mortal Kombat, etc.), however you couldn't load up your own roms. The new version has a bunch of no-name and knock off games but you're able to load roms via the removable micro SD card. Presume they got stung for copyright, etc.

Have read people were having issues with plugged in game pads not working, and the controls don't seem like they're worth $249. Saying that, at $49 it's worth it for the shell alone as I believe it's relatively straightforward to replace the retro pie and customize. They used to sell the shell with controls for ~$100.

    • The old versions had Pandora 9S and the one before was Pandora 6s if I recall.
They had about 1600 arcade roms.

Yes, the empty shell one, the only thing missing was the Raspberry Pi 3b or Pi 4, it came with power supply, hdmi adapter etc, usb joystick adapter.

The new one has weird never heard of ROMs on it.

  • Hmm.. not a retro pie.. inside..
    but a customised PCB..
It would be a absolute pain in the butt to repurpose

  • I was in store today, they said not available at that price till tomorrow and wouldn't sell at $49. Had a fiddle around with it. Plays up to PS1 games. Has pretty much all the emulators installed and comes with a 32gb sd card apparently filled with games.

    • +1

      apparently filled with games.

The 50 different versions of Galaga, Space Invaders and Phoenix.

  • $50 is a steal. Got one thanks. Not sure if it will be gone later

  • +1

Available online now. I've ordered one for delivery. Hopefully it's not as dogshit as everyone says. It'll at least be a fun little project to pull apart and see how much I can repurpose.

And then I can show the kids the old games we used to play in the arcades. That'll probably last an hour before they get bored 🥱😂

  • Ordered one for delivery. Don't need it but will make a good present for a mate.

Manual is linked below if anyone is interested in how it works.

    https://media.jaycar.com.au/product/resources/GT4286_manualM…

  • Merry Christmas me cheers op!!

  • Max SDcard is 128GB, which in the emulation scene is not that big.

I wonder if it is better than the PSC1 with AutoBleem 1.0.3 & Retroarch.

    • It could be an artificial limit due to fat32 standards. For example, the 3ds systems have a "limit" but you can just use a tool like Rufus to format a larger card as fat32 and it will work without issues.

  • So where to download the compatible ROM games? Or is that not allowed to be talked about? I’m a complete newbie in this retro gaming world but excited to tinker with it

    • Archive.org

    • You can download tons of MAME roms from websites like emulatorgames.net and romsdownload.net.

I can't comment on the compatibility of this unit though.
I'll report back once I've bought one and tested.

      • +1

You legend. I’ll keep in touch 😉

  • I too have impulse control issues and have purchased.

  • Thinking about buying as I have a ton of MAME, NeoGeo, etc, Roms.
    Feeling nostalgic already, thanks OP.

  • Cheers bought one c&c for the kids to connect to a 28" monitor

  • Bought one on c&c.

Can you put a raspberry pi in it coz that would be sweet?

  • It's online now too, snagged one a couple hours ago.

  • Based on the menus in the picture and whatnot, this is going to be like one of the "4k game stick" type devices.

PS1 will run, a bit awkwardly, and you'll need the right file type (chd does NOT work), everything older should be right. GBA might give you the shits a bit too.

I'll be (profanity) around with mine when I get it so any questions, throw em my way

    • Just looking at the manual it seems it supports 9 other emulators other than Mame. Is there a preference to which emulators people should use or just depends on the games that are available on each emulator?

It seems the roms need to be left zipped in the downloads folder for them to work. I’m guessing this inherently slows down game loading. Not sure what type of zipped format it requires.

Also to clone to a larger 128gb sd card I assume you format to fat32 and copy all folders over.

For security I might delete the inbuilt games and content/data to a bare skeletal and just run games off downloads before plugging into internet ready TV
