Product page seems a little vague, especially considering the reviews indicate the included Roms are clones or homages to Official games, and not very good ones at that.

Also, what are the specs of the processor/board? Which version of Mame is this running, and what brand are the buttons/parts (e.g. Sanwa vs. Seimitsu?).
Why would I buy this over a Pandora box or some sort of makeshift solution?

    • +12

Yeah typical Jaycar. I'm immediately tempted but my better judgement is telling me to steer clear.

    • Yeah I couldn't see any specs anywhere. Apparently its a GT4286 but searching for that gave me just repeats of the Jaycar blurb. I suppose for $124 its worth a punt for some weekend fun for the kids but not sure how long it would hold up to some streetfighter sessions.

If this could run batocera off the SD I would consider..The emulators look like they are from 10 years ago and trying to find the correct romsets will be painful.

    Model number is gt4286.

Get a decent fight stick and if you are absolutely stuck a cheap $50 500gb hdd with batocera off Ali (or even Amazon)

    • If its running Mame it should be easy enough to do. I did read a review that someone had gameboy roms running on one so they must be able to add different emulators. This is what got me initially interested.

Depending on what stick and buttons are used, it might be worth it for parts alone, although I highly doubt Sanwa was used, lol.

I wonder if you can mirror this to a bigger card so you load up more roms.

      • Yes, says card capacity up to 128GB

“1500 games” = Street Fighter 2, Fighter Street 2, 2 Fighter Street etc etc

    • +4

      Fight 2 Streets

      • Feet Sighter IV

        • Looks like the OF edition.

  • It's probably uses some crappy Pandora board just like their Game On Friends system and will not work when plugging into the PC to use it as a arcade stick.

A buddy of mine bought one of these a while back.
The quality of joystick and buttons felt crisp and a bargain at this price opposed to building one ground up.
Works great revisiting a golden age of arcade gaming.
He loaded his up with waaaay too many games obscuring the alternative of cherry picked classics.
Didn't see many that supported co-op two play if that's what one might be expecting with this layout.

Bought one for myself and one for a gift at this price.

also bought one for myself and one as a gift, at $124 it seems better value than a small unit with game pads. if the joysticks fail at some stage i can swap them out and don’t need to worry about making a case, etc.

  • +1

From what I've heard, it's using an old version of Final Burn Alpha as the emulator (which was discontinued five years ago) and it can be a pain figuring out which version of MAME ROMs it takes.

If the joysticks are OK, it might be worth buying if you don't feel like building your own, or don't mind replacing the guts with Raspberry Pi etc.

I have the older version. They arent that good. Joysticks and buttons are super cheap compared to sanwa. The interface is clunky. It also uses an old version of mame. I tried a few times to add games, but no luck.
Ended up buying an empty cases on sale for $34, sanwa joysticks and buttons, then a Pandora Saga EX2 (the 2 board version). Runs everything arcade, consoles inc PS1.
You could buy this and swap out the game.box.

  • Most of the reviews are about the games or lack thereof, but honestly the more important part to me is the Joysticks and hardware.

Out of curiosity, how much more expensive would it make your own with decent sticks in the end?

just bought one in store.. apparantly the price is online only.. but the happy to price match..

the games on there are garbage.. but..
it looks like it is running FB neo.. not FB alpha…set up in 2023…

    Feels a little laggy

It also only came with a 16gb microsd card..

    • Thanks for the update thats interesting to know👍

    • +2

I bought one this morning and I do agree the games are rubbish, I did manage to load more games onto it but not other emulators or previews for the new games.

That's interesting mine came with a 32gig stick with only 157 games, and I could locate an old gamedata.db on the stick but not other games.

  • +1

used winimager to copy the microsd card.. (could't easily format my mini SD 64gd to fat32)
found a collection of Final Neo Roms.. copied to the download folder.. no issues..
All the FB neo games are slightly cut off from the top and bottom, I presume there's config setting, I need to set up..

Some games feel a bit laggy.. deifnitley wont be clocking up high scores easily on this…

    • Thanks Kelvin, it seems its probably not such a good deal then.

      • Could be my TV with input lag though?

Its still pretty impressive for $124..!!

        • Possibly although I wouldn't have thought so. Glad you are happy with it🙂

          • +1

@Spendmore: fixed the cropping issues.. simply a setting on my TV..
Definitely a little laggy in some titles.. other work really really well…!
Most of the Final Burn Neo roms.. work except some of the button mapping isn't quite right..
Most of the older games.. are 10 times harder and look ten times worse than I remember..
Moon Patrol and Pooyan as so hard!!

            Definitely a good time waster..

I bought one ! A little disappointed. I'm sure they used to have "1500+ games" but mine has 157. The same unit is advertised with 1500+ games - at full price - at other places.

Annoyingly, the menu displays the filename not a nice human readable name. I have tracked this to the game.db file in the root of the SD. It's an SQLite file and I can edit it but changing the "fileenglishscan" field to the correct name for a game changes nothing. It's running a modified version of gmenu2x.

Adding ROMs is easy. There is a download folder with subdirectories for each console emulated. I added an fba and a MAME ROM and they appeared on the Download section of the menu. I found you could add a screenshot into the associated roms/<console>/image directory and it'd be displayed on the menu.

I'm hoping to find someone who purchased one with 1500+ games and get a copy of their SD.

      ditto …

Hi everyone, has anyone gotten the high scores to save on mame games? I currently have over 10,000 games loaded up, but it's pretty annoying that saved games aren't working. I haven't checked any other emus yet; I'll have a look tomorrow.

  • Have you worked out how to edit the name displayed on the menu ?

    • By the looks of it the names can be changed with the filenames but some of the emulators don't like to have spaces in the filenames and they crash.

  • If you rename the roms then MAME doesn't recognise them and just exits and returns to the menu.

  • Regarding high scores … I read in another forum related to another console that the scores were stored in a directory in RAM and lost when switched off. What someone did was create another partition on the SD card and mount it at that location so the high scores stayed. Not sure if we can do something similar here.

Jaycar have them on sale for $124 again.

  • Just bought one of these today
Anyone know where the best place to download the roms for it is?

    • Found some games but so many are not working
Does anyone who have one have where they got their games from that are working?
Even games like Pacman are not running on mine

  • Different versions of MAME require the arcade ROMs to be in a different formats. You might have to try a couple of Pac-man ROMs before you find one that works.

The microSD card that came with mine has an emus directory - I assume this is where the emulators are. The fbneo and mame subfolders contain the same files so I believe FBNeo is the emulator that is being used for all arcade ROMs. FBNeo is a derivative of FBA (Final Burn Alpha) and I can confirm that the pacman.zip ROM from the FBA 0.2.97.42 works on this unit from Jaycar.
