PS5 Console Digital Edition (Slim) $519 Delivered / C&C / in-Store @ Target

As per title, just saw this deal when checking for the cheapest locally available unit. I don't know the normal price of these at the moment but this is the cheapest I've seen a new one before. Seems to be free shipping to all metro areas and click and collect is also available

Price of these things has finally come to where they should be in their life cycle.

    • +26

To me it should be $400 for digital and 500 for disc by now

      • +4

yeah you're right, I didn't even notice it was the digi version… cursed relic they are

      • +3

This dealwas in line with that, but sold out within a minute. Only other similar pricing I've seen is via cashback deals which can be iffy.

  • +7

    if it was the disc…

    • +3

If my grandma had a schlong

        Please continue

      • How do you know she doesnt

        • That’s for me to know and you to guess

  • +7

Gamesmen did this deal a couple of weeks ago through eBay.

Hope boxing day sales something happens

      • +1

Boxing day deals has become weaker every single year… seems like BF is the biggest sale of the year atm.

  • How does pricing on games compare digital vs physical?

    • +8

      Digital is much more expensive

      • +1

        Thanks, that sucks.

      • Do you know why that is? Are online game updates not available on the disc versions?

        • +10

Because you always pay full price in Playstore for everything and never actually own any of the games you purchase.

No 50% off deals, no trading, buying or selling secondhand, just straight up paying $119.95 for any AAA release and having it taken off you whenever they want.

        • Because it's a monopoly. The only person who can provide the digital store is Sony themselves. Hence no discounts.
Also no sharing or resales. Avoid digital like the plague.

          • +1

@tanksinatra: sounds like the lower upfront cost is classic false economy….are there any benefits to the digital console or games?

            • +1

@andresampras: Convenience. You can purchase the game from your own house and you don't need to get up to swap discs when you want to play a different game.

              Otherwise no benefit.

              • @tanksinatra: but surely the disc console allows digital downloads as well? or is it restricted to only physical media?

            • +2

@andresampras: Yeah, for starters the comments about above about no sales is misleading, you will find launch day sales for disc games which there won't be for digital for a little while. But sales definitely happen a lot on digital.

No disc swapping required with digital games.
Digital games can also work out better if you have multiple consoles in the household.

I have a primary PS5 with PS5 Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled
              I also have a primary PS4 Pro
and thirdly I have a secondary PS5 which is exclusively for my own use

All consoles can be used online at the same time with only my account having a PS Plus subscription.
Any PS4 game can be played on all 3 consoles simultaneously.
Any PS5 game can be played on the 2 PS5s simultaneously.

I also think the idea of "owning" disc games vs digital is relatively moot now, half the time the discs don't contain all of the files required to play the games anyway, many games come with launch day patches etc, all of these come from the same place the digital games are downloaded from, so a disc is no guarantee of a good time if Sony or a dev shuts down services.

Having said all that, I think it's better to have the disc console so you have the best of both worlds.

That's cool! Thanks for the detailed explanation.

        • It’s actually mainly because of convenience. You can buy it any time of the day or night.

    • +2

I wiuld prefer the digital, but will never not buy the disc due to lifetime of price gouging.

How no distribution, manufacturing costs somehow gets passed unto us, using our own internet to download the game which is usually 60gb plus, will never sit well with me.

Linus Tech tips did a disc vs digital comparison recently on YouTube…..pretty good pros and cons list, ultimately disc won out

  • The ps6 wont come with a disc drive, stand or even a box.

    • I wouldn't be so sure. I suspect it'll come with an optional disc drive like the PS5 Pro. Otherwise there would be zero backwards compatibility
