Starlink Mini Satellite Internet Kit $299 (+ $80/Month 50GB Roam, $195/Month Unlimited Roam) + $34 Delivery @ Starlink

1410

Starlink have advertised the Starlink Mini kit for $299 instead of $599 or $799. It is still full price on other sites, so maybe price match. Site says deal is valid till January 30th

Requires $80pm for 50gb roaming subscription, cancel anytime as needed. For more roam data the $195pm is unlimited.

Starlink Mini is designed for connectivity on the go and can easily fit in a backpack. Starlink Mini is a portable, all-in-one compact kit with a built-in Wi-Fi router, lower power consumption, a DC power input, and max speeds over 100 Mbps.

The price for this has been going up and down like a yoyo recently, but I suspect the $299 may be the new normal.

I pulled the trigger immediately, just in case it's a pricing error. Waiting to price match/beat could have saved $60 (10% price beat + pickup)

    • +5

Unlikely to be a pricing error. Just Starlink doing a Promo.

  • +10

AMAZING! I was so very close to pulling the trigger on a marketplace Gen2 in the coming days so this is huge!

You have made my day OP.

    • +2

      marketplace Gen2

Don't go a Gen2, they are becoming very unreliable!

      • +1

        Oh good to know!

Can you expand on that more, I have some friends with the G2 and they rely upon it for work so I am super interested to know more

        • +1

Had a few experiences with Gen 2s requiring reboots constantly or having the Dish "not connected". New cable does nothing.

I haven't had any issues with my Gen 2, but it is connected to a UPS. I'm not sure if the issues have been related to power outages or not, but I have had more and more around the 2-year mark running into issues.

Haven't found a root cause. But the Gen 2s have a motor in them, so it is just another point of failure compared to a Gen 3 with no motor.

    • +2

Just remember the smaller ones are slower if that matters.

      • -2

225mbps is nothing to sneeze at

        • +3

Not sure where you get those figures from, that is more like the speed from the larger starlink. The mini in real world usage sees around 200mbps which osnt bad but half the large unit.

          • @Spendmore: Dunno which one it was. I don't get mine until next week.
A colleague had his setup on his bonnet, while we walked from jobsite to jobsite. He showed a speedtest on his phone.

            • +1

@Ulysses31: Yeah it would be the larger one, the surface area determines the amount of data it can receive apparently.

              • @Spendmore: Got mine today. It's the smaller one (same as my colleague).
Did multiple tests, and got 180mbit easy enough. Colleague showed me a screenshot of his 225mbit, so it's possible on these.

      I know right 😁
      I missed the previous promo
Almost pulled the trigger on the 599, then decided to wait till cyber Monday in case
Nothing on Monday and I got depressed and just randomly checked again early this morning and there it was. Woohoo

Tickled pink to be honest. (And I guess I've just outed how old I am by using that phrase)

  • unfortunately officeworks only stock the standard not the mini - otherwise I would head down there straight away to price beat + Amex cashback.

    Standard at Officeworks:
    https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/starlink-s…

    • +3

You can price match at bunnings. Someone posted on a comment before saying they could put one through special orders on here.

    • Officeworks do stock the mini, but that's pointless as they will not honour price beat for this item. Head Office have informed all stores not to honour price beat. Justification being a note in the Starlink FAQ https://www.starlink.com/au/support/article/efa87a10-aa1d-78… on the Starlink website that states:

"If purchasing through an authorized retailer, a one-time credit equivalent to the amount listed below will be applied to your Starlink account after activation."

With Officeworks being an authorised retailer they are using this clause to avoid price beating, notwithstanding nothing in the OW policy saying if they find a clause on a suppliers website they can weasel their way out of it.

  • can the mini be used with the standard $139 internet package at a fixed location?

    • +1

Not guaranteed, can't choose as an option when ordering getting starlink. But I have a mini set up as roam and there doesn't seem to be anything preventing me from swapping my plan to fixed address.

    • +1

Not 100% sure, but even if you could, the router is in the dish and the speed is slow compared to a Standard Kit. So it might not be worth it.

      • There's an ethernet port on the Mini; it can be connected to any router or AP if more range is needed.

        • Oh well, didn't know that. Thanks.

Still, its just more cost and stuffing around to do another cable to the roof, plus then another AP and then have slow speeds compared to a Standard Kit? Standard Kit would be a lot easier and you get faster speeds without the need of another AP.

          • @geekcohen:

Still, its just more cost and stuffing around to do another cable to the roof, plus then another AP and then have slow speeds compared to a Standard Kit?

It depends on OP's use case. Is it a small home? Is there a patio or window facing the right direction (OP never mentioned roof)? Is it a temporary (rental) setup? What speeds are acceptable for OP's usage? Would OP benefit at all from the size of the Mini later on?

            • @eug: Of course, there are many factors. But some of those factors could also make a Gen 3 more attractive or sensible.

Yup, that's why I said it depends on OP's use case. Without knowing the specifics it's impossible to say whether or not it's just more cost and stuffing around, or actually a preferred solution.

Still, its just more cost and stuffing around..>

            True for fixed address.

            For us it's ideal

We spend a lot of time in the van (like 6 months out of 12)
On the road, with one of our mesh devices (deco) as the router, everything works as normal. All the home routines work in the van. Other devices see the same SSID as at home, so we can take speakers, lights etc with us in the van.
Come home, park the van right by the house, the mesh connects and everything just works with wifi through the house as normal.

Until now, we've been using mobile hotspot in the van, and devices need to be reset and reconfigured for different network if moved to van. Also we've either had to disconnect from NBN when away or keep paying while we're not here. Lots of development here, so exchanges are getting congested. Disconnect from NBN and you might have to wait when you get back

There's a potential trick for a $200 saving on the Gen 3 if you know someone in Wagga Wagga!

  • is the plan required to be activated right away? or can we order it now, and wait a few months before activating the plan?

    • +2

"You'll receive your first monthly service bill upon activating your Starlink, or 30 days after shipment, whichever comes sooner"

      • Does the referral give you a free month that can be used for the first month?

        • No. Pay the first month andn then 2nd month free.

          • @geekcohen: From the FAQ: "You can pause service prior to activation in order to not be billed for the first invoice. You can pause service through your Account page (via starlink.com) once your Starlink has shipped. Subsequently, the first bill will generate when you un-pause/reactivate your service"

So you can pause it to avoid first month fee?

            • +1

@aj3000: Yes, but you won't get a free month. You need to pay for 1 full month to get a free month.

              • +1

@geekcohen: Yes. I just need to keep it paused. As this is essentially a backup or to be used when travelling.

                • @aj3000: So the idea is to buy this, pay 1 month and get 1 month free and then pause it until you travel again?

                  • @lyoo01: no.
                    1. Buy this now.
                    2. Once it has been shipped, pause the service via account page.
                    3. Unpause the service when I need it.

First month gets charged when I un-pause the service.
Second month should be free due to referral.

                    • @aj3000: I see. I must have screwed up then. I bought a service and then i paused. It then says "
Your service is scheduled to end on 5 Jan 2025". Does it mean, I might as well use it? lol

                      • +1

@lyoo01: I will report how it goes after mine has shipped. I don't see an option yet to pause my service.

                        • +1

@aj3000: They told me that they cannot postdate the start of the billing so I guess I got 1 month now to at least play with it

                          • @lyoo01: I just got my shipping notification and I was able to go to my account pause the service."Your service will continue through 6 Dec 2024". Since I did not activate the service and paused it right away, I don't think I will get charged for the first month until I reactivate it.

                            • @aj3000: Have you tested if your starlink mini works or not? Just want to know if you can test it after you paused it.

  • +4

pretty much now with this you are always connected even in the middle of no where. technically this has more coverage than telstra :D

    • +1

100%. But remember, the router is in the Dish, so WiFi Coverage may be poor. This is more for Camping/Caravan/Touring.

  • I wonder if there is anyway to claim back the difference for people that paid $599 & $799 less than a month ago.

    • Unlikely.

      • Does JB HI-FI offer the same Starlink 30 day trial with full refund if not satisfied?

    • A refund for the difference can be claimed from the credit card company if they have price protection.

    • Anyone that took up the JB Hi-Fi $599 offer are still within their 30 day return policy

      • Was on hold for 2 hours this morning, they're only able refund the difference if purchased within the past 14 days. 30 day refund policy is an option to head into store

        • I was on hold for two hours and was disconnected when it was my turn in the queue..

Plenty of reports now of full & partial refunds from JB Hi-Fi..

Also of Starlink crediting accounts the difference. Which if you're keeping and using the product..

Personally I returned mine and ordered direct with a friend's referral so we both benefit. Which works out better than any Price Beat.

There's something off about the $599 advertised sale, that then ends up being more than half the sale price again only a few weeks later direct from the manufacture.

At least refunds and credits are being issued..

          • @Thayer: Did the same, complete refund from jb, and signing up again with a mates referral code. Totally agree re sale and the sale price again, putting it down to the bs Australia tax.

  • When you buy through a retailer, do you have to buy a plan or can just get the hardware?

    • I think you have to buy a plan with the hardware, but I'm not sure

    • You buy the hardware and setup the plan later.

    a DC power input

Yes, yes, its got a DC input, and a mains power supply to produce DC, but Starlink go out of their way to not say anywhere in their specifications what DC voltage that is.

This is a product for ROAMing. When you are roaming, like out in the middle of nowhere or in a vehicle doing up to 100 km/h, you probably don't have access to an AC power point.

Anyone know what DC voltage it is that it runs on.

    lower power consumption

It might be "lower", but 75-100W isn't low power consumption if you are roaming and running off a battery. Over a day that's the capacity of two, count 'em, two 12V 100 amp-hour batteries. Its a lot more than, say, a fridge would use.

The sensible thing these days would be to design it so it runs off a standard PD power supply and save everyone a lot of aggravation.

I do. I have an inverter in my canopy and that powers my Starlink Router, UPS and Mini PC.

It might be "lower", but 75-100W isn't low power consumption if you are roaming and running off a battery. Over a day that's the capacity of two, count 'em, two 12V 100 amp-hour batteries. Its a lot more than, say, a fridge would use.

Not even a Generation 3 draws 75W! Mine draw on average, 30W. If the "heater" in the dish is on, then yes it'll draw more. But that is only mainly for houses that might get frost/snow. Unlikely if you are roaming to encounter frost and if you do, wash it off.

    • +3

but Starlink go out of their way to not say anywhere in their specifications what DC voltage that is.

Did you go out of your way to not look it up? :)

It might be "lower", but 75-100W isn't low power consumption

Looks like you went out of your way to make up figures.

The sensible thing these days would be to design it so it runs off a standard PD power supply and save everyone a lot of aggravation.

Starlink sells a Type C to barrel cable (Amazon version) if you really need it.

But I'm very glad they put a standard 5525 DC barrel jack on it as I'm sure people who use this for travel/mobile setups are.

A barrel connector is far more resilient than Type C and the Mini can be connected directly to any mobile/camping setup (12V battery, 18V tool battery, 24V battery bank, 48V home battery bank) without wasting power doing unnecessary conversion in a USB power supply or relying on PD triggers from AliExpress.

If the ideal dish position is 10m away from your campsite you can just run a 14AWG DC cable all the way to it from your 12V supply. If it was 20m cable-length away from your offgrid home you can do the same and run an ethernet cable too.
If it was Type C you wouldn't be able to do that easily.

      • -3

Looks like you went out of your way to make up figures.

What I went out of my way to do is look up and quote Starlink's own specifications for the product.

        Starlink
        Antenna Electronic Phased Array
        Field of View 110 °
        Orientation Software Assisted Manual Orienting
Weight 2.9 kg (6.4 lb), 3.2 kg (7 lb) with Kickstand
        Environmental Rating IP67 Type 4
        Operating Temperature -30°C to 50°C (-22°F to 122°F)
        Wind Speed Operational: 96 kph+ (60 mph+)
Snow Melt Capability Up to 40 mm / hour (1.5 in / hour)
        Power Consumption Average: 75 - 100 W

Power consumption: average 75-100W. So, given that you are disagreeing with what Starlink says about its own product, it looks like you that's telling fairy tales.

        • What I went out of my way to do is look up and quote Starlink's own specifications for the product.

Those are the specs for the full-sized Standard dish.

You have click on Mini to see the specs for the Mini.

@eug: I follow the OzB link to the description of the product.

I want to know something more specific, so I click on "Specification".

But instead of giving me the specifications of the product I'm looking at I get the specifications of a different one.

            Poor web site design.

  • How is the quality of connectivity for normal home usage? I have been using Belong for like ages because I simply couldn't be bothered to move but the quality of connection varies greatly.

    • I would not suggest a Starlink Mini for Normal House Usage. The Router is in the Dish, so Dish being outside and then trying to cover a house, good luck.

Also, you cannot plug anything into the Starlink mini, so you cannot do any Access Points or anything. You would need (I think) another Starlink Router and then you can setup a Mesh Network.

      • +6

Incorrect. The mini has a LAN port that you can use to plug in an alternate AP.

This is satellite, so long as you an unobstructed view of the sky in the right direction, it'll be good

      • Thanks for the replies. Is quality of connection good though? I have like medium plan 50Mbps download and 17Mbps upload. Is Starlink mini ROAM any comparable?

        EDIT: Found info below :)

    • +1

For Home Usage, better to go Gen 3 @ $349 which is on special.

      • Yeah but doesn't that only apply to regional area? I live in North Shore :(

        • +1

Yes. You could buy a Gen 3 kit on a Roaming Plan at a "regional" address (friend/family), then swap it is residential when you get it.

  • Another question. Would this work well while travelling overseas? I am going to Asia so can I just set this up in resort + use internet?

      • Ah I see. But this is still pretty good. Won't be able to use in my upcoming trip but I should be able to use it in trips planned next year and so on :)

      • I’m going to Philippines in coming months, and there the monthly unlimited plan is 4100 PHP or $100 Aud p/m almost half price the cost here. I’m considering buying this at Bunnings via PB + TRs refund then just activating it when I’m there.

  • Can i share this worh neighbours?

    • Probably, but the Router is built in the dish, so range may not be the best.

  • +1

How does it compare to the NBN 100/40 ?

    • -1

      100/40 is 2.5.

    • Download - Same
      Upload - Variable, 10 to 40mbps.

      Latency is probably higher.

      Depends on your NBN.

Whilst not tested on a Mini, Speed Tests and Latency can be found here. Note - A Starlink Mini will be slower, latency probably the same.

      • Thanks, I will go with a 5G plan then which has good speeds.

        • Might have good speeds, but most likely higher latency. All depends on your use case.
