Starlink Standard Satellite Internet Kit $349 (Regional Areas Only) + Plan (Roaming or Residential) + $30 Delivery @ Starlink

400

Like the mini, the Generation 3 Standard Starlink Kit is on Sale via Starlink (at the moment). Highly likely that being Starlink have done the Sale, all retailers like JB, Harvey Norman, Officeworks and Bunnings will most likely lower their prices (usually within 24 hours).

This is more suited for homes and businesses with fixed locations. Depending on your use case, it can also be used for roaming. I have a Gen 3 mounted to the Roof of my Ute.

Speed Tests of Standard Kit can be found here including Latency.

Looks like it is for Regional Areas only. Tried a few Metro and no discount applied.

Referral Links

Referral: random (94)

The referrer and referee receives bonus credit for a month of standard service, 30 days after the referee activates and keeps their Starlink. Referrals will only issue credits to Standard Plan (Residential) and Mobile Regional (Roam) subscriptions. Kits purchased from a retailer or reseller are not eligible for the referral program. No credit will be given even if a referral link was used during activation.

Have you used starlink? Can you provide the comparison and pain points?

      • +5

yes and you cant' get 1gbps speeds like I can on my FTTP link.

          • @geekcohen: I'm not sure I believe it. wouldn't there be a limitation on bandwidth?

read the article seems possible but still seems like they need to pass a bunch of hurdles first.

            • -1

@Kirbieb: Impossible, SpaceX will find a way, look at the rockets!

Yes, lots of things to do and hurdles, but not impossible.

wouldn't there be a limitation on bandwidth

More on probably Satelittes, so maybe some hardware upgrades required plus then bringing them into lower orbit.

            • +2

@Kirbieb: If you told me 5 years ago that you can get ~300mbps on Satellite with reasonably low pings, I'd have said the same thing you are saying.

              • +1

@loksmack: Yeah I've tried starlink and i actually liked it, but I still think FTTP is better is almost every way it's just it was bungled when it was first introduced, and we are still playing catch up.

                • +5

@Kirbieb: You won’t find anyone anywhere who disagrees with you. Of course FTTP is better.

            • +3

@Kirbieb: Elon is first lady now. So he's going to get a (profanity) more money to progress Starlink.

      • +3

If you can get FTTP do that. If you are on literally any other connection type then Starlink wins. 200mbps download speeds pretty damn consistantly. Can experience issues in extremely heay weather

    • +12

Of course. Starlink isn't designed or made for those who access to Fibre. Its more for those on NBN FW/Satelitte in regional areas. It isn't really designed for Metro.

    • +5

If only that dream was real for everyone.

My experience is that it destroys the pathetic FTTN offering I was able to get.

      • +2

My experience is that it destroys the pathetic FTTN offering I was able to get.

100%, I had NBN FTTN and Starlink craps all over it.

        • -6

yeah may people complain about FTTN, I have FTTP on the opticomm fibre so is way better than anything NBN has to offer.

          • +5

            @kungfuman: nbn has FTTP too.

            • -5

@Twix: not as good as Opticomm fibre.

              • +3

                @kungfuman: In what way?

                • -3

@Twix: Try opticomm fibre for a month and compare it to NBN fibre and u will see how much better it runs I have never had down time ever it just works never had a bandwidth issue it just works. Never drops in speed ever it just works. Better yet it’s not owned and installed by NBN Co!!

                  • +3

@kungfuman: OptiComm FTTP doesn't run any better than nbn FTTP.

I have never had down time ever it just works never had a bandwidth issue it just works. Never drops in speed ever it just works.

I can say the exact same thing about my nbn FTTP connection.

Better yet it’s not owned and installed by NBN Co!!

                    Why does that matter?

                    • -3

@Twix: o I forgot. ALL opiticomm is FTTP there is nothing but FTTP unlike NBN. In terms of performance, Opticomm is (on paper) usually a better option. It should be faster than FTTN, FTTB, and FTTC connections. As for HFC, Opticomm's full-fibre technology is technically more capable, but real-world performance might be similar for some locations.

                      • +2

@kungfuman: That is not nbn's fault. nbn was doing FTTP to 93% of AU until Abbott and Turnbull thought they could do it cheaper.

Now nbn are rebuilding most of the network twice with more FTTP and enabling HFC to do 2000/100. That is at least 7.7 million homes that can get connected to nbn FTTP by December 2025.

I can't find any more recent data but in 2022 there was only 560,000 homes connected to OptiComm FTTP.

OptiComm FTTP is not more technically capable. nbn and OptiComm are both using XGS-PON for FTTP.

                        • +2

@Twix: it the peoples fault for voting for a idiot government.

                          • @kungfuman: It is what it is. More homes will get FTTP and that's all that matters.

                            • +1

@Twix: if they stuck to the original plan NBN would have rolled out FTTP in the BEGINING!! if only people valued internet infrastructure over other thing, then they wouldn't have voted for a government that screwed it up completely.

                              • +1

@kungfuman: They got what they voted for. Now look at all the complaints about slow speeds and dropouts on copper 😂

      • +1

Are you not eligablefor the FTTP upgrade?

    • +9

Imagine comparing a satelite system to a fixed line system that pretty much no one in the country has access to, on a deal that is squarely targeted at rural properties.

      • +1

a fixed line system that pretty much no one in the country has access to

About 20% of Australians have access to FttP NBN connections. Or did you mean "in the country" as a phrase to mean "in a rural area"?

I agree they're not intended to compete directly, but given the enormous mess the NBN ended up in (thanks Abbott you useless prick!) under certain circumstances people may actually end up cross-shopping.

        • +3

From my quick napkin math it's more like 36%. FTTP 25% and the 1.4 million still on FTTC that can swap to FTTP so + 11% = 36%.

Most of FTTN will be able to swap to FTTP by December 2025 so + about 29%.

About 65% total or at least 7.7 million homes that can get connected to nbn FTTP by December 2025.

About 600k FTTN homes without a FTTP date + new homes with FTTP so it might end up at 70% total.

    • +4

eh a dedicated fibre link is okay but it's better to have the entire internet on prem in your house.

    • you win the captain obvious post of the week.

    • +2

Show me how I can get a dedicated fibre link to my house without spending 6 figures…

Starlink is for those of us who are on Skymuster or Fixed Wirelesss NBN. If you have wired NBN, it's not for you.

      • plus Maybe those with bad FTTN.

        • +3

Yep agreed, though it would be good for FTTN users to establish that it's the line itself that is the problem and not the ISP or their hardware (bad wifi range for example). In the regional area that I live in, many people blindly recommend Starlink to FTTN users which may not be necessary and ends up costing them more, and potentially clogs up Starlink bandwidth for people who don't have a wired connection option.

          • +1

@loksmack: 100%. I got bad FTTN. 700m from the Node, 60/30 on a 100/40 plan. Moved from one town over where I was 500m from the node and had 100/40 no problem.

In the regional area that I live in, many people blindly recommend Starlink to FTTN users which may not be necessary and ends up costing them more, and potentially clogs up Starlink bandwidth for people who don't have a wired connection option.

Could be why in South East QLD, Starlink is "sold out". Too many people probably doing this.

On the No Bloody Network haha

    Only for selected areas:

$349 $549 FOR THE STANDARD KIT IN SELECT AREAS

Adjusted. It seems to be Regional Areas only.

    WAGGA WAGGA WORKS

  • +2

Still can’t get a FTTP connection, Adelaide hills 1km from suburbs. Thanks Malcom. Registered with NBN 12 months ago for Fibre upgrade no change.

    • So you have fttn? What kind of connection speeds do you get?

  • +4

How good lol i went to order this last night for my parent xmas present ($599) was too lazy and didnt wanna pay the $30 shipping so was going to grab it from Harvey Norman.

Saved myself $300 by being lazy

EDIT: Damn didn't know referrals were a thing

    • +1

Me too :( and via starlink support they said no sir you can't backdate a referral.

      • ahh ok ill just cancel the order and redo it I suppose

        • let me know if this works for you

  • Does this work on sailing along the coast?

    • +3

Only works about 22kms off shore. Outside of that area, you need the Boat Roaming Plan or pay for priority data which is $3.19 per GB.

      • Thank you so much.

  • +2

Perfect timing, node speeds cut in half ~3 weeks ago after a big storm and since yesterday I’ve had no internet after the nbn techs were in the hole

    • +8

And this, kids, is why you don't deliver your national communications network on copper wires……Thanks Tony you scummy twat.

    • Did you fill the hole back in after they went in to stop being a pedestrian hazard

      • I might have to hop in and fix it myself, they aren’t coming back until the 9th

  • +1

Amazing what they can do with Sputnik

  • +1

If I was to buy the Starlink hardware delivered to a Regional address and later "move" to another address, this would attract the discount Regional price no questions asked , right?

    • I believe so. I suggested this above.

    • It might need to be activated in that rural area to begin with.

  • Anyone getting $64 for delivery to melbourne metro? seems execessive.

    • Thats new! Its usually been $30 Australia Wide.

Wow! It's $34 to 3810. I did a Standard Kit Order yesterday and got $30 delivery, now showing $34. Did another test to 3429 and got $34.

      What postcode for $64?

    • +1

Yeah, so this happened to me…but when I ordered on my iPhone (instead of desktop computer) the shipping went down to $34: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/16050313/redir

It's like there is something wrong with the desktop version of their site…

      • I just got a quote for postcode 4352 and the shipping cost was $34

      • I ended up trying this on the phone and got it for $34. Thank you for sharing

        • Great, glad that you got it for the more reasonable $34 and not $64!!

    • So looks like based on other comments, postage is now $34 Australia wide.

  • Anyone got recommendations for a roof mount?

    • Anything but the pole adaptor from Starlink, its rubbish. Tin or tiled roof?

  • So IF I just immediately grabbed the standard hardware from Officeworks… and also ordered via StarLink via referral link to get the free month…
Can I activate the officeworks starlink hardware under my referred starlink account and get that free month? Then return hardware to either officeworks or StarLink thereafter?
(Never had StarLink and very impatient postage wise)

    • Sounds like a huge stuff around and they might not do it if they see name, IP address, home/physical address etc matching.

But it sounds plausible. If you do it, let us know how you go.

  • Anyone else's kit been delayed and delayed? Order on the 9th of DEC, and the original estimate was 20th-24th DEC. Now it is almost New Years Eve. Might also be longer with public holidays and AusPost deliveries.

It hasn't been shipped yet, no AusPost tracking.

My Mini was here in like 5 days, I am guessing Gen 3 Stock issue in AU.

    • My parents ordered theirs on the 3rd of Dec and it still hasn't been shipped yet.

      • Wow. I finally got my tracking number on Thursday night, due for Delivery tomorrow at this stage.
