This has been known for a long time and still hasn't been patched. I wouldn't worry.

  • +8

    Theft is not a bargain.

    • +27

      I'd download a car though.

    • Its not theft, its more of a loan

      • Travelling without paying the fare.

        • +5

I do that all the time on Grand Theft Auto V

          • @askbargain: On Grand Theft Metro, there is a fine of $296.

        • Its called a credit - google it .. its funds you owe PTV.. PTV can technically send out a letter of demand and make you pay it back. How is that stealing?

          • @Gavman:

Its called a credit - google it

            Myki don't provide credit.

          • @Gavman: Since when has PTV started offering a line of credit? - They haven't. Therefore, it's theft & fraudulent behaviour. Google it.

Try doing this when you're about to get off on the 3rd trip and the ticket inspectors are checking your Myki

    • +2

Yeah this happen to my partner. She is an office worker in the city, was touched on with a negative balance, and received a fine.

She wasn’t trying to scam. She had the physical card.

      • +3

With this one you always touch on with a positive balance

        • But you are travelling without paying the fare. $296 fine…

      • +2

and I hope she never paid, if you touched on successfully that's the end of it

        • Not if you haven't paid the fare.

      • Yes she touched on. But it went negative due to the touch on.

    • +3

This won't be an issue so long as you touch on with a partial credit balance. If you are in negative when you tap on then the card won't register and you will get a fine (if caught). If there is any balance you get the green tick for travelling. It may be a pia to try to get through barriers on the other side buy that's why they have attendants. Given the max daily charge is $10.60 technically you probably get away with loading $10.61 so 1 cent would be left for the 3rd trip.

Technically this would get me 3 days of trips into the city for $22 assuming you don't use more than the train (less than 2 hours) on one of the days.

      • +1

It wouldn't be an issue if crummy tech was able to simply carry over the negative balance to the new card added to the same account.. i guess not.

      • Is this because it usually deducts the fare when you touch off? What happens if you don't touch off the previous day, so touching on immediately deducts the previous fare putting you into a negative balance, or does it not let you touch on?

  • +8

LMAO loving the reaction on this post

  • -2

    This is theft

    • -1

Its not theft… its a loan/liability. whether you pay it back or not is another question.. PTV should have tech in place to carry over the -4.90$ to the new card.. if it doesnt then its their issue (loop hole) to resolve.. highlights the crappy ticketing system MYKI is and has always been…

      • I'd imagine more likely to be seen as fraud than theft particularly if done 10s or 100s of times.

        • +1

Its not Fraud.. Myki can go into negative balance. Same as Bank Accounts can (people do so and close/never use bank account either)… I understand people are taking advatage of a loophole but the amounts/accounts are recorded so PTV can easily recoup the money if they could be bothered, or better yet, provide a better ticketing system that is not prone to technical loopholes.. This is also more or less offset by the ~200 million dollars kept on expired/unused or lost Myki cards/credit that the government keeps and doesnt bother to repay any time soon (source: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&c…) they make a squillion in interest on this..

          Green rubs both ways!

      • its a loan/liability.

        Myki don't provide loans.

        • +2

Of course, they just take 0% interest loans from the public thanks to ~200 million dollars kept on expired/unused or lost Myki cards/credit that the government keeps and doesn't bother to repay any time soon (source: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&c…)

          • @Gavman:

Of course, they just take 0% interest loans

            nope

            • +1

@jv: Yep.. I would love $200 million at 0% interest with no obligation to find and refund Myki credit to people and yet choose to invest the money at 5% int. rates.. that's a bigger rort than a bunch of people saving a few bucks flogging a loophole akin to saving 20% on Hungry Jack loophole.. criminals LOL

              • @Gavman:

Yep.. I would love $200 million at 0% interest

That is peanuts if you rent and have ever paid a bond.

              • @Gavman:

akin to saving 20% on Hungry Jack loophole.. criminals LOL

not a loophole. it is travelling without paying for the fare. fine is $296 if caught.

a better comparison would be going into Hungry Jacks, ordering a whopper, paying a $1 coin and running out without paying the rest, and calling it a 'loan' and trying to justify it is not theft.

  • +19

Love the reaction. oh no don't steal a few bucks, but also that person….

Plex server, Sonar radarr, powershell windows license, Eneba Gamepass Via VPN..

    • +3

      Authorised officers on lunch break

    • +5

Or save 20% on Hungry Jacks APP loophole that gets 500+ .. but nah that not stealing LOL

  • +2

This isn't theft… Theft is the Vic government locking us into the worst PTV contract and never learning from their mistakes… Weren't we supposed to be on a new system by now.

    • New system sucks anyway

    • New system is FINALLY being rolled out now, started 2 weeks ago in Wangaratta, the new readers work with everything, at long last and are fast.

      • Can you use a phone to touch on?

        • +1

Yes, credit card/debit card, physical or NFC through your phone, watch etc.

  • This sort of dodginess is not a bargain

  • +2

Considering I have had to pay $6 for a MyKi on multiple occasions and can only run them down to -$4.90 this feels fine to me

  • +4

Can't you have an android pay linked to a google account that doesnt have your real name? Not sure how this will ever get back to you if set up correctly.

Also love how some ozbargainers become so righteous when it comes to the government but have no issue with taking advantage of a pricing error.

    • I guess when you "steal" from government, your are stealing from everyone? You could be potentially degrading the quality of a public service for which we don't have many more affordable alternatives.

    • +1

Government is tax payer money. Pricing error for a private business is not.

      • +1

A business has employees and stakeholders too? Taking advantage of a pricing error may have more direct negative effects for a smaller group of people but we are okay with that?

Taking advantage of the government for its own incompetence is not?

I think this is double standards. Also try knocking on government coffers and asking for your tax payer money and see how far that goes. As far as I am concerned, government/business is the same. I pay taxes for a service, just like I pay a business for one too.

      • +1

Ironically the government will never fix this unless it’s well known

        • +1

That is the irony isn't it? I feel like half the people negging want to keep it a secret for themselves.

  • -1

Hey PTV, if you want to fix this, just don’t allow negative balances on mobile myki :)

  • I thought you could not go negative or else they can fine you.
    Example :
Trip 3, you touch on positive but then you are negative if an inspector check your card. Am I right or it is ok ?

PTV is so expensive and put a heavy financial weight on my family!

    • +2

But you already touched on, and "paid" for that trip. You shouldn't be fined, as technically you would be making up for that money once you top up again.

      • I have heard people doing that with physical mykis and getting fined.
Example taking a trip with only $0,3 on a myki can get you a fine because after touching on your are in negative.

        Sorry I am a bit confused ^^

        • +2

We have no idea how the arrangement between PTV and Google works. For all we know Google might have to cough up the negative balance and result in an account ban afterwards. I think everyone is getting worked up over a non issue.

Just don't use a google account with your actual legal name and you should be golden. Use disposable credit cards for top up for extra security.

Please down vote VPN hacks then.

      • So, you get a service for free when you use a VPN? Or you actually promise to pay and then you don't?

The VPN trick is like travelling overseas and buying something cheaper there, and then bringing it back into Australia. I don't think people who buy cheaper stuff overseas declare them at the airport so they can pay the difference to make up for the local price.

  • +2

    This is so wrong.

  • +5

DUDEEEEEE.. Prime example of how one person can ruin shit for boatload of others

Love all the righteous comments where half these people cash in on price errors, shopping cart hacks like KFC and McDonald's, VPN or signing up to services from overseas providers, etc.

Btw this exploit has been out since the beginning of Myki on Google Pay. People are asking for it to be taken down because they don't want to lose their discounted fares.

    • +2

AHA Tend to Agree. all these ppl saying its fraud/stealing .. get a grip.. its a simple loophole that could be easily closed or mitigated if PTV got off their bums

      • +4

Yep and if the government really cared they would have fixed this 5yrs ago

    • They're what we call the cherry pickers. Negs deals for RRP then upvotes deals for RRP (Aldi).

You'd do better to just use concession no?

Maybe my Xmas gift to OzB should be sedja'ing people's names onto my health care card to get them out of a jam with those dirty (profanity) (profanity) power trip (profanity) dog (profanity) ticket inspectors.

    • “Dog (profanity) ticket inspectors”

I can tell so much about you from just this one comment

      • -1

Could you tell that outside of a couple of short trips for the Melbourne show and the odd concert, I haven't taken public transport in years?

Or could you tell that I'd maybe just seen that video making the rounds of the absolute dog Myki inspectors who pulled a dude to the floor and dragged him around like a ragdoll?

Or maybe you could tell that a friend years ago in high school got a 200 and something dollar fine from the douchebags because they didn't have their health care card on them at the time and despite showing the guy the Centrelink app with a locked and loaded ready valid HCC, they still got a huge ass fine, in year 11 when they obviously don't have a couple hundred to throw around for trivial stuff

Like cops, I'm sure most of them are fine. But also like cops, you're way too okay with doing NOTHING to stop the bad eggs, and thus, you are a bad egg system at that point. As the crudely drawn graffiti at Lilydale station 10 years ago once said,

        (profanity) ticket inspectors.

  • Hand of death is free

  • +3

I know times are tough for some but this is outright fraud and should not be encouraged.

  • +3

This is not a hack. Why is this post still up?

  • Remember when certain transport companies used Mifare cards without encryption and you could just clone them onto another card and use? Unlimited travel.

The same for university accommodation and restricted areas.

    Good profit.

  • +2

    Victoria understands debt.

  • +3

Everyone negging this is an absolute muppet.

    1. This isn't new. People were doing this 8 years ago when Myki on Google Pay was introduced. PTV may be a bunch of useless, incompetent pricks but even they know about this.

    2. PTV themselves are a bunch of thieving pricks. $11 to go from an outer suburb to the CBD? Costs less in actual fuel. Not to mention the yearly rate rises with no actual benefit.

    3. Having to pay $5 for a travel card when every other state/country give them out for free - or don't even need them because gasp they've implemented NFC payments with normal cards/phones.

    4. PTOs are a bunch of thugs. Beating up teens, elderly, overseas travellers who don't know English, all just because they didn't pay the $5 fare? Cry me a river.

If anybody deserves to lose money it's PTV and the shit system they operate on. World class city, third world public transport. Pull your heads out, (profanity).

    • +1

To be fair: only NSW gives them for free. Every other state charges.

Source: I have a myki, an Opal card, a go card, a metroCARD and a SmartRider

      • +2

Right, but they also have a free option for paper/cardboard tickets as well. No such luck in Vic - the mis-education state.

    • -3

Beating up teens, elderly, overseas travellers who don't know English, all just because they didn't pay the $5 fare

      Conclusive evidence required here please.

        • -5

First one is perhaps excessive force but hardly “beating up”

Second link is literally just a woman crying on tiktok, no mention or evidence of any physical contact whatsoever.

Third is the only one that seems out of line.

And in neither of those videos is there any conclusive evidence that fare evasion was the sole reason for PTOs making physical contact.

You’ve very clearly got an agenda here.

          • +4

@Mike Nolan: Ahh well it's just excessive force then. I guess it's all good that five grown men piled onto a single one for skipping a $5 fare.

Are you really that braindead or do you just not care about individual rights and enjoy sticking up for a faceless, foreign-owned corporation?

Again, why do you even give a shit? You're from QLD. Could you lick PTV boots any harder?

            • +2

@Tacooo: Please stop calling out bootlickers, I can only get so erect!

  • Wtf

  • Thank you for informing metro, they will look into this and fix it. Can't wait to see a new article on this within a week

    • +1

They've had eight years to fix it and have done (profanity) all.
