Round The World Open-Jaw: MEL $1915/SYD $1962/PER $1963 via Rome, New York, Tokyo (Various Airlines, Classes) @ BTF

1290

Inspired by the shorter RTW itinerary a few weeks back, I've spent some time writing a script to try and find RTW flights like this, which also include Japan.

So basically, to appropriate and tweak what was described in the other post…

You basically pick a destination you want to go in europe out of the following list (Manchester, London, Paris, Barcelona, Zurich, Milan, Rome, Munich, Frankfurt, Istanbul, Amsterdam, Copenhagen). then add a segment of say Rome to New York, then choose one of the following cities in United States to Tokyo, Japan (Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles) and then from Tokyo back to your source city.

To that end, be aware of the following caveats:

  • some legs are on low cost carriers, others are premium
  • some are economy, some are premium economy
  • sometimes the layovers might be weird or long
  • it's a mix of airlines, so check their conditions carefully

With that in mind, on to the flights!

2 weeks of torture for $2000

    • +2

I guess you haven't tried waterboarding.

      • +24

No, but the idea of four 36hr low cost flights sounds worse

        • +18

I've flown many low cost flights, some on the same trip. It's fine if you're young and you have time (to recover). I'm too old now, but I don't think this is negative vote territory. You might be soft or old, but not everyone is.

    • +4

      You're not very popular!
I'll add my bit… something about gross consumption and doing the bit to trash the planet, just because you can. I suspect I might score higher than you!

    • I can never figure out why anyone would do this.

  • +19

When I searched, it shows like this.
    Sydney>Rome SQ economy
    Frankfurt>New York SQ economy
    Los Angeles>Tokyo ANA Premium
    Tokyo>Sydney ANA Premium

    $1908
If these are premium economy, it's really good price.

    • +1

      Rome → Frankfurt
To travel from Rome to Frankfurt, you have several options including train, bus, and plane,
with the train taking approximately 10-12 hours and the bus around 18-20 hours.

      New York → Los Angeles
The flight between New York and Los Angeles is around 6+ hours, but expect to pay between US$ 150 - $350 for the flight.

      • +2

Here I was thinking internal flights within the US were cheap.

        • It "was" in 2013 - 2014 but the USD-AUD exchange rate isn't so good now anyway.

Besides, the U.S. domestic flying experience doesn't rate high for me, with their airports feeling like bus terminals, TSA officers shouting at passengers, check-in luggage is not free a lot of times, etc.

  • +3

Amazing value if you are flexible to the ticket conditions!

    • How so?

      • +3

An example of being less flexible: having two children under 10 in tow.

        • +4

          Just check them in?

  • Would this work for December/jan holiday period?

And are all the flights code share one ticket?

  • +1

    😦

  • +20

Wouldn't it be more realistic to provide example itineraries spread over 2-12 months?

Two week itineraries make this look more like an extreme sport than anything pleasurable for ordinary folk.

    • +3

Exactly, I'm going to china in June for 12 days and the idea of two 12 hour travel stints already puts me at my limit. This itinerary isn't one country it's 3-4 continents!

    • +2

I literally just landed two hours ago from my 6 week round the world trip.

Spread it out is all I can say. Then again I was limited to whatever flights were available for redemption on SQ's partner airlines. Saving grace, it was all in business class.

      • Go anywhere / see anything good?

        • +2

Well trip itinerary was as such:

          • Taipei
          • Vienna (day trip to Bratislava, Slovakia)
          • Lisbon
          • Rome
          • Munich
          • Copenhagen (day trip to Malmo, Lund in Sweden)
          • New York
          • Los Angeles
          • Japan (few cities)

Japan will always be up there for me as I just love the place but Munich was favourite out of the bunch, followed by Vienna. Then again both are culturally quite similar.

          • @quackie: How many flights? How many hours on a plane? Did you visit anywhere that wasn't a metropolis?

            • +2

@sween64: 16 flights in total. Total flight time of 3 days and 9 hours. Flight stats from Flighty https://imgur.com/a/Jwuxu6u

I was meant to have 15 flights but it went up by one as my FCO MUC flight on LH was cancelled due to a 2 day strike in Munich. I was given multiple options, I chose to go with Austrian Airlines via Vienna as it got me in just 2 hours after my original arrival time. MUC airport was dead when I arrived.

Metropolis. Well I did a bus tour in Copenhagen that got me out of Copenhagen to Helsingborg, which then went onto the Swedish town of Lund and the city of Malmo.

In Japan I did get out of the usual golden route. I flew into Tokyo but then I went to Himeji, Okayama, Takamatsu, Hiroshima, then bussed up to Matsue, then hired a car there to drive to Izumo which is only 30kms away but gave me more flexibility, before heading back to Tokyo.

      • how did you do it? RTW rewards ticket?

        • +9

Sit tight. This might take a while.

Singapore Airlines for years have always had a Round the World redemption ticket. 200k KrisFlyer miles for Economy, 280k KF miles for Business and 405k KF miles for First Class. Not all airlines have First Class, and if you have just one segment in First with the rest in Business, they'll charge you the miles for First. This makes Business the sweet spot.

Unfortunately, in early April last year SQ announced that they were stopping that program altogether, giving people three weeks to sort out the tickets before the program stopped on the 1st of May.

I had already planned to do my trip later in the year but with tickets not being available for another few more months, I had to move my trip up by some 8 months. Thankfully it only took two days to confirm availability of all the flights by myself using SQ's site, as well as other sites to validate/check availability.

As I couldn't find availability for flights in and out of Australia, I started my trip from Taipei. To get to Taipei, I used miles to redeem a return ticket in business to Taipei.

And with award availability in North America being quite difficult, I bought a commercial ticket on United to reposition myself from New York to Los Angeles.

The RTW redemption flights were as such

Taipei to Vienna on EVA Air (stop over in Bangkok)
Vienna to Lisbon on TAP Portugal
Lisbon to Rome on TAP Portugal
          Rome to Munich on Lufthansa
          Munich to Copenhagen on Lufthansa
          Copenhagen to Frankfurt on Lufthansa
Frankfurt to New York on Singapore Airlines
Los Angeles to Tokyo on Singapore Airlines
Tokyo to Taipei on EVA Air

So total amount spent on this: 280k KrisFlyer Miles, and AUD 1200 out of pocket (booking fee and surcharges).

The reason I chose SQ on the fifth freedom routes from FRA to JFK was due to the lower charges that was passed on by SQ compared to LH. LH is quite bad for passing on charges, it also doesn't help that their hard product is stuck in the past on the equipment they were operating from FRA to JFK.

I had forgotten about ANA for some reason on the LAX to NRT flight until a friend reminded me three weeks ago. Oh well.

There's still another way to redeem with SQ for a RTW ticket but that will cost a bit more in miles. https://www.australianfrequentflyer.com.au/fly-round-the-world-krisflyer-miles/

My next RTW redemption adventure will most likely be with ANA. I do have enough points in Marriott to transfer across to do one with ANA but it's definitely not in the near future!

          • @quackie: this is great thanks! too bad the program got cancelled and krisflyer conversion rate sucks now..

            • @Exorcist: @Exorcist, if you happen to have roughly 360k (I think that's the amount) worth of points in Marriott, and have no use for room redemptions for some reason, you could transfer them out to ANA and try your hand at an even more complicated Round the World booking.

              https://www.ana.co.jp/en/au/amc/partner-flight-awards/around-the-world/

Otherwise it's hard to earn ANA miles unless you travel with them or with a Star Alliance partner (credit your miles with NH).

Is there a way to avoid the US? There are travel warnings issued

      • +17

When you use expressions like “fake news” you betray your own bias. I suggest people read the full information, look at the current news, and do a bit of extrapolation for themselves. Border control in the US has always been problematic and now even more so. The US has decided the rule of law doesn’t apply to foreigners. Personally I would be trying to go through Canada rather than the USA. Why risk losing the rest of your trip because the border control people decide to throw their weight around. I’ve travelled to the USA many times, we were there when 911 happened, and their border force people are singularly unpleasant at the best of times. This isn’t the best of times.

        • +8

Thank you for saying so. Canadian here with a lot of fear for the US. Also, saying 'fake news' online is like adding a "…NOT" or diagonal laugh-cry emoji to a statement. I think I know the demographic lol

          • +9

@ohdear1985: Same people who misuse “woke” because they can’t come up with a coherent argument.

We’ve also travelled through Canada and it was a far superior trip. We pushed the boat out and did the Rocky mountaineer gold class with the Fairmont hotels, a sleeper between Vancouver and Toronto, then got a hotel with a view of both falls on the first night of the fireworks. Certainly the view of the falls is superior on the Canadian side. The Canadian people were nicer as well. Would certainly recommend people go via Canada rather than the USA.

I wonder how long before Canada has to put up a wall to stop the refugees fleeing America? Maybe Canada can charge America for passage to Alaska? America is out of control at the moment. My best to your fellow citizens.

            • -2

@try2bhelpful: Funny you accuse them of that when pointing to Smart Traveller is a perfectly coherent argument. Meanwhile the person you're replying to couldn't even address that and just pointed at "the news" and vaguely fear-mongered about the US border control.

Plenty of travel deals on this website to countries where there actually is a significant risk, why aren't you warning people on those?

              • +1

@jlc123: This thread is about the USA and I have personal experience there. I would be happy to warn about other places I have personal experience of but in all honesty the USA was where I’ve felt the least secure when I’ve travelled. This isn’t vague fear mongering either in the USA at the moment. They are ignoring court orders when it comes to deporting people. Border security in most countries is a nuisance. Everytime I go through Border Control in America I feel like they are looking for a reason to deny me entry. You really think our Government will issue a warning when it will antagonise Trump? They probably assume people will read the news before they travel there. As I said people should read all the smart traveller entry not just one line.

        • +3

and their border force people are singularly unpleasant at the best of times.

          100%

… and maybe they're reading this now, to reject me in the future 😬

      • +6

Not 'fake news', because apparently people's social media posts have been used to reject people at the border. Apparently.

        • -3

Never have anything in social media under your own name and scrub devices before entering the country. The best way to talk to Americans is to meet the ones who are travelling overseas. They usually aren’t as insular and less likely to carry guns.

          • -8

@try2bhelpful: Now who is betraying their own bias.

Judging a class of person by their race/religion/nationality?

            • -1

@RockyRaccoon: Nah mate, I’ve actually travelled in America and we lived there for a while. I’m basing this on real life experience. I learnt to curb my “free speech”.

    • You can fly to new York and then go straight to Toronto. Then head west to Vancouver and fly out of there rather than Cali or LA

  • +6

Any way to avoid USA too? Been to Iran for holiday years ago and can’t be visa free now

    • Any way to avoid USA too? Been to Iran for holiday years ago and can’t be visa free now

If it has been >7 years since that holiday, you will get the U.S. ESTA online, unless the rules have changed "recently".

If within the last 7 years, you will need to pay for a normal U.S. B1/B2 Visa and go for an interview at the nearest embassy.

  • Amazing

  • Would love to see some 6+ month examples

  • +5

I'm sorry but the first flight is always around 43 hours, that is completely absurd

  • Much of the flights I checked showed that you need to fly Scoot to and from Singapore. The best segment is ANA Lax to Tokyo which can be premium.

Maybe better to look at RTW Singapore/singapore and get better connections

Then just add best scoot return fare from Singapore.

Some of the original options had flights crossing over each other.

  • +1

    Perfect for backpackers

You can try and extend at each stop over for 4-5 days, years ago you used to be able to. Great way to see the world cheap

  • +7

    We did
    bris to tokyo Qantas
    Tokyo to london ANA
    Prague to seoul Lufthansa
    Seoul to Sydney Asiana
    Sydney to Bris Qantas

In dec/jan peak for around $2k

If you are interested in this route or similar then prices fluctuate between $1.9 to $2.2.

We did European Christmas markets and NYE in Seoul. It was 2023 and pretty amazing free activities. I heard all nye activities cancelled 2024 due to the marshall law. The best christmas markets were the ones in the Alsace region. It’s like right out if a storybook. Winter/christmas is the most magical in europe.

Is there anyway of doing the American leg via Canada or Latin America - eg Toronto or Buenos Aires?

It’s not hard to plan your own RTW itinerary buying single one way tickets. One way flights to China from $300 and one way flight from China to Europe from $300. One way flight to US from Europe from $150.

It’s only expensive if you search from Oz to YS or Europe but if you stop in an asian country, it’s less.

We flew Seoul to Brisbane via Beijing (free stopover in Beijing) for $360 one way on China Southern in Dec 2024.

My son flew from Beijing to Frankfurt one way for $300 in Dec 2024. January and July are the peak dates so book early.

  • +6

This would be great if you could skip the US, just fly to Europe one way and back a different way. No way would I be risking myself or the family going through the border.

  • -1

Can see how this is good value, but also I wouldn't even do this if I was paid 2k. Nightmare.

  • -1

I just want to do Tokyo and Bangkok. Can I skip the rest?

    • +1

Could try play around with Thai airways in Skyscanner

    • +1

It's now 30 day visa on arrival in China. Best flights with bags and food and to first fly to China then Japan then transit china again to Bangkok and back to China again before coming home. It's a multi-city or individual on Google flights.

I was gonna do this but it was too cold in Tokyo so I just did Melbourne to Bangkok (Jetstar left my luggage and IT crashed, never again) then I went to see the pandas in Chengdu.

Next time I go anywhere besides Indonesia, likely I do China again. I did china transit in 2023 to get to Europe as described by another user.

  • +1

You would have to have rocks in your head going through the US at the moment. If you do take a burner phone and don't take a laptop (unless you and everyone in your social media/private messaging do nothing but praise Cheetoh Mussolini).

    • +2

      Cheetoh Mussolini

      Cheetolini.

      • Trumplethinskin. Terracotta Toddler.

        • +1

          Trumplethinskin

Mike Tyson, is that you ?

  • @beatthatflight You may want to add in the caveats that the prices you have shown do not include any carry on's or checked luggage in the price.

In the search I clicked on, the add-on price shown for hand luggage and a checked bag ranges from $777 to $834.

So 40% more than the price shown.

I still appreciate the deals you post, just think you should highlight this.

  • I just did 6 and a half weeks around the world, the US airlines are terrible avoid at all costs, The US in general is not nice - Canada much better.
