  • Been looking to pick up a self propelled.

How is this vs Ego or others?

    • Very interested in this comparison as well. Same questions about line trimmers between the different premium branda

    • I got the Ego LM2156E nearly 2 months ago, to be honest I am not that impressed with it. Gets clogged and stalls in high grass and the cut quality just isnt as good as my old Victa, probably due to the slow Ego blade speed. You look at YouTube and everyone raves about the Ego mowers but its just an advertisement rather than a proper review nowadays.

    • I've used both; an older XGT Makita 40v model and I own an Ego. They both IMO do a great job, so it's about the price you can get them and what else you are interested in in their ranges. If you don't currently have any power tools then Makita would make sense and tou can build out in both conventional tools and gardening whereas with Ego you're limited to garden tools.

    • I bought the Ego LM2022E-SP. Went in to total tools last week to look at and possibly buy a different model; online it's listed as $1500 but instore it was $1150 which was similar to what I was going to pay for the plastic smaller version so I got that model instead. On max it propels faster than walking pace, albeit on flat ground. Grass was quite high when I cut and a little wet from rain the previous day, managed fine but could hear when the catcher was full as it was clogging up a bit (never cut out) but I consider that normal for any mower. Haven't tried other battery mowers, only a couple corded (small toys compared to this). Definitely prefer it over a petrol. Quite heavy though, not an issue for me but wouldn't be easy to lift for average user imo. Unfortunately you've missed a battery redemption for EGO but it might still be worth it. Happy to send photo of receipt or price in store if you want to try matching etc.

  • Can redeem free blower from makita website

Ordered yesterday, just picked up today and did the lawn in this horrible melbourne rain as I was too excited. Way more powerful than my 1200W corded Ozito as the Makita is rated at 1900W of max power

  • +1

Had this and the blower for approx 12 months. Brilliant mower, very powerful and I’ll never go back to petrol after this. Battery life is good on my front/ rear lawns approx 150sq/m. Mulches very fine. Only issue is that shut will get a bit clogged with wet grass. Otherwise I highly recommend it.

    • just checking to see if you did get this deal with the 5ah batteries as i see alot of reports on this mower say that you need the 8ah batteries to get good performance

  • Anyone know the end date?

    • When I went to the store, they themselves didn't know about the deal let alone the expiry date

  • ffs, i just bought the 18x2v self propelled skin ONLY for about this price YESTERDAY, no blower, no nothing, ripped off!

thought the 220 off wasn't too bad! considering this comes with two batteries, AND the blower (I did get a blower last years… not the 40v though!)

    annoying!

    • Return it?

      • +1

        special order

  • Anything decent with an alloy deck? Steel deck seem to just rust out in a handful of years and is the reason I have a Honda. But thinking of changing to electric but most seem to be plastic or steel.

    • Are you leaving it out in a puddle of salt water or something? Seems a bit extreme

      • +2

Cutting grass you will always get moisture on the deck, over the years it start to eat away at the steel and rusts it out and you end up buying a new one.

        • I've found that blowing the grass off with a blower has kept mine in good shape after 4 years of use.

  • +1

I would recommend buying a dual 18V mower all us AEG 58V system owners got burned ass they are discontinuing that ecosystem, 18V Makita will never become obsolete you will always have batteries .

    • +2

I doubt 40V XGT is going anywhere either

They already have a comprehensive toolset

    • The 18x2 36v system doesn't have the oomph and runtime needed.

I have several Makita 18x2 tools (including the mower) and many 18v tools. However have always been slightly disappointed with the 36v.

Most of the tools I purchased were before the 40v xgt announcement. I was disappointed that they did not opt for a battery system similar to Hitachi or dewalt (multivolt) that would allow backwards compatibility and greater battery capacity on 18v tools. Makita seem to be the only manufacturer who has opted to leave 18v at 6ah max.

Overall, if I were to replace the mower or other garden tools I would absolutely purchase the 40v. The only issue there is buying into a new ecosystem.

    • Makita are pushing the 40v platform with more tools continually transitioning from the 18v to this one. They're not going anywhere, even with 2x40v tools coming out now.
Has heaps more power than the 2x18v mowers which are terrible.

      • Not sure why you think the 2x18v mowers are terrible. I let my grass go for about 18months and my 2x18V Makita ripped through it without issue with 2x5ah and 2x6ah batteries swapping back and forth on the charger. Took me a few weeks but the limiting factor wasn't the mower, it was what I could squeeze into my green bin.

  • Thanks OP. Needed a self propelled mower and this seems like a good deal

    • You won't be disappointed

I bought this deal. Watched a fair few Australian reviews and it seems a great mower, better than the EGO on many metrics and I also put more trust in Makita batteries than EGO (I'm in the EGO ecosystem). For some reason the Australian market got swing back blades on this mower while the US got bar blades, seems our swing back perform better than the bar blades so the US market doesn't like the Makita as much as here as well as the kit coming with 4AH batteries over there.
Don't forget to register with Makita to get the 5 year warranty on the skin
Don't forget you are eligible for the blower which makes this an even better deal. This is the blower https://sydneytools.com.au/product/makita-ub001gz-40v-max-co…

    • IM being dumb. How is this deal combined with the blower?
Can I purchase and redeem this online in one transaction? Dont want to end up buying mower and not getting the blwoer.

      • +1

All good, they don't make it clear. You purchase the mower from Sydney Tools and then you will make an online redemption through Makita where you'll need to provide the invoice from Sydney Tools for the blower and it will be posted out to you. You'll redeem through here https://makita.com.au/promotions
But I hope you're not in a rush for the blower because in my experience it normally takes these hardware companies weeks to process and post out.

        • My assumption is they deliberately wait to process the redemption after the Australian retail cooling off period (10 business days)

      Super helpful comment, thank you.

Just picked this up today! Cant wait to use it. I told myself to hodl for a 40v deal when the 36v was on sale. Glad i waited

  • This still valid? Im probably missing something, but I cant spot any mention of the MAKITA 40V MAX XGT Brushless Blower Skin on that link? Has it expired?

  • Thanks OP! I've been looking for the right deal on a SP mower since my Ozito failed in January, this ticks all the boxes and at a great price.

Total Tools will price match since SydneyTools will not order in (if not instock at store) since it is a special promotion.

    • Total Tools (2 mins away) refused to price match online, hence had to order it at Sydney Tools which was next Suburb

      • +1

I had no problem with TotalTools at Smithfield price matching, just rang the store directly. Whereas SydneyTools Smithfield refused to order it in for me.

        • Could also order it online.

      • +1

TT priced matched for me, I called up an individual store rather than using the website to request. The bloke was really good, was a bit blown away by the price but said they say they price match so got to live up to the word.

Ok got to put it through it's paces today. I have about 400-450Sqm of lawn.
Battling some winter grass atm and the lawns were looking pretty shabby, had been almost 2 weeks since it was last mowed and with our rain and sun atm it grows quick.
I have a 12 year old Honda 4 stroke push mower. The lawn today was only slightly damp, I filled a 240L wheelie bin today with clippings

Pros- Plenty of power and in fact it breezed through areas that the Honda can struggle with, it cuts as low as I was cutting on the Honda, it's has self drive but yet is still lighter than the Honda to push and pushes well, self drive is more than fast enough and seems too fast on full throttle, it's obviously quiet but it has a quiet mode that goes even quieter and still seemed to cut great when used, love the lift up flap to the catcher, means you can see how full the catcher is without having to remove catcher. Large discharge chute (compared to the Honda) which means it will be less likely to clog up in wet grass. Folds up standing up

Cons- Battery life at least for my circumstance no where near what's claimed, I chewed through both batteries and I was prob using self drive only 30-50% of the time, I think in winter with wet grass I'll need another battery or do it in 2 goes. The cut is close but not as tidy as the Honda but when I get time I'll try them side by side and see. The right side of the mower protrudes past the deck which means when you're pushing that side against a boundary then the cut doesn't get as close to the boundary resulting in a little more whipper snipping.

  • I adjusted the speed, the top speed was just way too fast, I'm keen to fiddle more between push and self drive to see if there is a difference in the cut.
Yeah at this stage I don't really need anything else but I'll keep my eye out for any good deals that might sway me. Even if the batteries only degraded 5% then i wouldn't have actually finished the lawns tonight, not the end of the world but I guess I wish this kit also come with the 2 8Ah batteries

    • Not the self propped speed, the buttons on the right, there is automatic and silent. If both are untapped, then it goes max power. Best to use automatic

      • Oh I didn't know that but yeah I think I did have it on auto, at least for a good proportion of the mow as I tested the silent mode then clicked that auto button, but I probably did some of the lawn in max power then which means there is potential for battery efficiency gains. I'll find out in a week or 2 lol

  • I did click and collect in Victoria. Phone call today to let me know that very little stock in VIC and will take 3+ weeks to order one in.
So not OOS, but bit of a wait.
