Mazda's plate clearance sale has savings of up to $4000 depending on the grade.
This makes the CX-5 Maxx ~$9000 cheaper than a base model RAV4 GX.

This whole year I've been hearing the new car market is going to crash, but I'm not seeing it. The CX5 Maxx Sport even went up in price. It was about $40k in the beginning of this year but now it's "from $42.2k". I reckon the new generation CX5 would start at even higher price mark, maybe $45k.
7-year old second-hand CX5 Maxx/Maxx Sport with over 100k on the clock are sold for 23-25k. Doesn't look like the demand is abating.
Trust us. All cars are going down in value.
Which ones went down, just for example? I'm in the market for a car (second-hand or new) and not seeing any price drops. In-demand cars like CX5 aren't dropping. Old Euros like 10-year old Skodas - yes, they are, but I'm too scared to gamble on a costly DSG. People are asking ~ $23-25k for 7-year old 100k on the odometer CX5 Maxx Sport and they're selling them. It really doesn't make sense to buy a 7 year old car for $25k when you could get the same car brand new for $37k (an offer I received for a new CX5 Maxx Sport from AutoScout in the beginning of this year). However, again, those second-hand CX5s are selling.

This is 20k and not 7 years old. Maybe get it or many like it
@serpserpserp: "repairable write off". It's cheap for a reason. Will be hard to sell after.
@beesider: Hail damage only. Plus as a third owner how much do you really expect to get for it at sale? People focus way too much on what they think they'll get for their car in the second hand market.
@beesider: Perhaps you'd like to buy a German car?
Yeah nobody is buying these at the current specials I can't even call these specials

I don’t like fossil fuel cars
Background: worked at Mazda in service for 8.5 years, left there 4 months ago.
Short version:
Buy the car, or try get the 2.5 AWD.
Absolute rock solid reliability.
Comfortable.
Good on fuel for a 1.6 tonne SUV. (Run it on 95 premium for the love of god, more mileage out of each tank, the high compressor motor will burn less as it learns it's got good quality fuel + runs smoother)
Carplay + HUD is all you need.
It's got a proper 6 speed auto, not a shit, lifeless CVT or worse, hybrid / mild hybrid system that cuts in and out.
They DON'T break.
All the crap you see online about bad press is the diesels.
There will be many whinging people who complain about little details like constant i-stop whinge… the car has auto hold, USE IT! You barely notice it and it becomes satisfying in traffic when you see a V8 idling away…..
They drive like hatch backs - not big bulky SUV's.
Sit in one, touch, feel see. Then sit in a RAV 4 and do the same. CX5 has a fit and finish that's so far above, no rattles or squeaks. Toyota make brilliant cars but god they are cheap, plastic fantastic inside.
CX5 2.5 turbo is the secret "wife car" for the dad - they lift off oversteer!
Old is good folks - tried and tested.
The safety systems aren't intrusive and don't drive you crazy.
Here's the kicker, the new gen CX60/70/80/90 is going to flop like crazy.
They all drive shit, rock hard suspensions and clunky torque converterless-gearboxes (they roll on a hill before doing anything, like a shit dual clutch and don't even get me started on the clunks it makes when it shifts between "coasting" and throttle).
Then we come to the reliability woes they ALREADY HAVE…….
I'm at Nissan in service now, and a CX5 is only very marginally bigger than a Qashqai, X-Trails are far bigger.
Nissan copped a bad rep for CVT's and it's justified as fluid changes were never in the schedule.
We recommend these hard at 60-80KMs now and I'd suggest changing fluid on Mazda auto boxes at 100KM + for longevity.
CVT's drive shit though, and no comparison between a Qashqai and X-Trail there - Mazda drives better, Nissan offers better value for money and more space for the price.
My wife's 2012 2L KE CX5 GT AWD is past 200,000 KMs and been flawless - rear diff & trans fluid change every 100KM (not cheap at retail, but a must if you plan to keep it like we are).
I'm still a Mazda fanboy but it's wavering as their new line up is shit.
Stick to the CX5, Mazda 3 (30 if you must). The TC CX9 (2016-2023) was the GOAT [try buy a 18 plus as some early cars had head issues].
You'll want to hope the new CX5 doesn't have a forced mild hybrid system or be anything like the CX60-90 range….
The other important factor is warranty.
Not all warranties are the same.
Mazda's 5 year even includes 3 years for the car battery, all globes are covered for the full 5 years.
It's unlimited KMs for private / business / uber buyers - yep, we've warrantied a complete headlight assembly on an early CX9 uber with 350,000 KMs as the DRL failed.
The roadside assist is great.
The dealership will get an approval from Mazda for a loan car if yours is off the road after a diagnosis (try that with MG for example, where the "warranty" isn't worth shit - I have a mate who runs a rental fleet of MG's and they don't get loan vehicles when the cars are broken [always several for an engine / gearbox etc]. Lucky they're so cheap they just buy more and turn them over quickly at auction).
Buy a Mazda, but not a new gen one, you won't regret it.
thanks for the write up but are you sure you work in servicing and not sales?? haha
I think he is in sales and probably trying to counter all the bad press others commented…
I don't think he quit Mazda yet. It's just a disguise to make it sound like he is an outsider
I'm not in sales, work at Nissan now but say what you will.
But hey, say what you like, working 8.5 years at a brand I will happily tell you the good and the bad.
So much misinformation out there…..
If you have a Mazda and dealer service, you can literally bribe the service advisor for a good survey and they'll do anything to help you.
Hey Kidder, thanks for the insider info. Just out of curiosity, are the 2.5 non-turbo engine and transmission the same in late models Mazda6 and CX5?
Hey mate, yep CX5/Mazda 6 2.5 (PY engine) share the same components.
@Kidder thanks for the details write up. Would you recommend a used cx5 from fy 2022 or a new 2023 model ?
Hey mate, both are the same really. 23 model might cop the newer Mazda connect system rather than the older MZD system, so that's worth it.
If I could get a higher spec by going one year older, I'd do that.
Thanks for the quick response. I know nothing about cars and my wife needs a new one since she gave her car back to her parents. We were looking at a 2018 akera cx5 approx 44k kms. For $30k. In your opinion is that worth ? Or better to get a newer year second hand
@warmmilktea: No dramas mate.
I'd try find the newest akera you can, I believe mid-late 19's came with cooled/ventilated seats which for me is worth the extra. I believe the newer infotainment system came in 21 though - if that bothers you.
@warmmilktea: Hey. Just wondering if the akera cx5 you saw at that price was a private sale or from a dealer?
What 7 seater do you recommend? CX8 or Kodiaq? If CX8 what year if budget is not an issue?
@Kidder
Hey mate, haven't driven the Kodiaq - it's VAG enough for me to stay away if you want hassle free.
CX8 is the "boring" one buy still drives like a long hatch back (it's a stretched CX-5 platform, same drivetrain). So while it might be boring, it's solid and easy to drive. Obviously, buy petrol but only choice is the 2.5 NA which is rock solid but unexciting. Year - newer better to get an Asaki (cooled seats, yay) and bose etc. At this price point, I'd be in a CX9 Azami as new as possible - but CX8 will be better on fuel (CX9 runs the 2.5 turbo).
@Kidder: Tysm. I actually have 2012 cx5 now which I’ll sell to get a 7seater.
@bhunter101: Awesome cars mate.
CX8 is basically the newer version, long wheel base.
No surprises and everything (still) works - just with a few more features.
Renault Koleos is at 38990 and most upgrades on others are standard to them. Thoughts?
Renault drive is pretty lack lustre. I had it as a rental while my car was getting fixed and driving around wasn’t much fun. I reckon Mazdas drive better.
Hold out for sub $30k in a year or so - pre covid prices. The car market is heading south quick.
