Looking at how all these car deals are getting over 100+ upvotes, I thought I'd do one myself (please don't flop).

A base-spec Mazda CX-5 now costs less than an entry-level version of the smaller CX-30 with a Vision Technology package.
The biggest savings is on the top-spec CX-5 Akera AWD; discount of (up to) $4,400.
The CX-5 is now about the same cost(ish) as a Kia Sportage.

*depending on where you live.

These are "temporary price reductions"; I don't know how temporary.

As temporary as the transitory inflation!

    • +8

Things are coming down fast. Just this week, heard another financial power house going through another round of redundancy the coming weeks.

    • +34

2 weeks to flatten the curve fellas!

      • -1

        What does this mean?

        • +3

To be honest. This is an indication of trend (something brewing or the market adjusting itself), not too worried (yet). But, the day that Toyota is doing "sale" events, things are pretty fk-d.

          • +1

@Chinese: They are on the Hilux at the moment. Was surprised to see it advertised. Think every man and his dog is buying some model of the Ranger by what I see on the roads

            • @Sammyboy: Gosh, Ive been seeing this the past couple months also. A lot of new Rangers.

    • +18

Don't buy it now as the price will definitely drop much further when they have flooded of stocks. Just imagine you can pick up the CX5 below $28000. Used car market will therefore drop even further! Cash is king under this economy!

      • +6

Almost down to what they’re worth then .

      • +4

Cash might be king, but AUD certainly isn't. If AUD drops like a stone for any reason, you can expect to see import (eg car) prices shoot up.

        • +1

If you believe in what you said, then you should have invested in foreign currency.

          • +2

@YasimKudomi Pape: Absolutely. For me it's USD and JPY, considering the current geo political and economic situation.

            • +6

@pokmo: The world's financial system is just (mod: edited). So unfair that we are (along with every other country) forever just dropping against the USD in exchange when they have printed unlimited amounts of currency during the covid. Their currency should have been valued much lower by now. But no, instead the AUD is getting devalued and resulting in higher inflation.

              • +2

@fuzor: When you are the world's reserve currency, you have the luxury of exporting your inflation to the rest of the world; that's just how the cookie crumbles sadly.

            • +1

@pokmo: USD always wins out so that's a sure bet, but you're gonna have to explain the JPY to me.

              • @jasonh: you're gonna have to explain the JPY to me.

Not op but I holiday there a lot

        • but we need the dollar to drop so our resource billionaires can sell more and get richer whilst paying no tax, thanks everyone for voting for this

      • +1

I got a CX-8 with a nice 7k discount, from 54 to 47, so yeah no hurry bois

      • Are you referring to $28k for CX5 brand new 2024 model?

do you have particular insight on what's yet to come? Please share. I'm intrigued as I am in the process of looking at second hand car.

if the brand new price is attractive enough, I may save the hassel with used car

    • +1

      TOYOTA CAMRY !

  • +3

    Not bad

    • +4

What does the Op mean by saying "please don't flop" though?

      • +3

        The post :)

      • +32

He posted this deal with his pants down I think

        • +8

I always assumed that was mandatory.

      • +41

Prob because ozbargain car deals are mainly either for

*High yield investment luxury euro cars
        *im-Better-than-thou electric cars
        *Raptor gen 2
*5th hand 1996 white Camry with 369,420km on the clock, ‘I eat ass’ bumper sticker, a million dings from parking in local Westfield, and sun faded Kleenex tissue box complete with white lace cover they taxed from a humble Chinese restaurant in 1999.

And the op deal is none of those

        • +6

You forgot the divorced/single mum, tradie or fresh P plater overpowered Ute (Hilux, Ranger, etc)

        • +7

I wonder what happens with that A200 or C200 high yield investment boy

          • +2

@djmm: Prob living it up on some private island rubbing shoulders with other people who ‘made it’ like our boy rekttrading

        • +10

          🤣🤣🤣
          Struth!

I was hoping it didn't flop, but I'm over the moon that I have over 200 votes!

Also got rewarded with my very first 'Popular Deal' Badge. Well chuffed!

  • +7

Luckily, reductions in new car prices do not affect used car prices. I know this because I'm very smart.

    • Really? Appreciate some elaboration or clarification to enlighten the other population who are not as smart as you

Disclaimer: I'm also a fan of used cars instead of new ones, but I hope discount in New cars result in lower used car prices. This pretty much happens all the time, which is great

      • +13

I think they expected us to infer the /s

      • +9

Massive woosh (and the 20 who downvoted Ozbarganite).

      • +19

        Just being sarcastic.
Thought people would pick up on that. Still taking every neg as a win though!

        • +2

Don't fret, those that neg are usually d**kless pansies who'd shudder in a face to face confrontation, hence use the anonymity of a forum to do what they'd never do in real life

        • +2

          People here are pretty dense.

    • +5

Mate, you /s is funner because of the the negative votes

  • +6

    That's makes a Tesla model 3 20k dearer.

    • +15

Two very different cars though. Can't compare an SUV with a medium-sized sedan. Plus, make sure to consider whether you have enough charging infrastructure around you (if you live in an apartment this is often very difficult to overcome).

      • +3

Dunno, I reckon the model 3 probably has a similar amount of interior space compared to the CX5 - just a shame the model 3 isn't a lift back with fold down seats.

        • +3

          Isn't that the model y

        • +1

a lift back 3 would have been great, just like the model S

      • +5

The Tesla Model 3 has much more boot space: 594L vs 438L

        • +2

If you like comparing Apples and oranges sure.

          Model 3 is smaller.

        • +3

Buying an SUV isn't always about boot space. Many people prefer a larger car because they feel more secure in them.

          • +3

@Zackeroo: They also prefer the higher driving position.

          • +1

@Zackeroo: For me the winner is the ride height ie getting in and out is much easier, and road view is better; and the head height, I'm tall so appreciate the improved floor to ceiling dimensions.

      • +3

Then 25k dearer given it should be compared to a model Y.

      • -2

What a fail! Someone just could not understand the sarcasm!

    • -1

And a CX90 is $40k more than a model 3! That and the base model CX5 doesn' even have climate control, let alone dual zone…

      • +1

        Has buttons…

        • You would hope so for $40,000 extra. That's a Model 3 + a CX5!

  • Any good deals on CX-9 or CX-90 ?

    • not likely with CX-9 as it's discontinued and they had the run-out sale a while ago. worthwhile checking with individual dealers and they may have a couple left they want to get rid of

  • +1

Should drop the top spec to this price.

    • -2

      Enjoy that dream.

    • +3

I just signed with Mazda yesterday

I dropped the second from top (CX5 GT SP) from $51,900 to $49,700, a total discount of $5,200 and including 3 years free service.

I saved up about ~$6,500 in total.

  • +27

The CX-5 is now about the same cost(ish) as a Kia Sportage.

By just about every metric, the Sportage is the superior buy

    • longer wheelbase, so more passenger room
    • substantially bigger boot
    • greater range of engine types
    • safer
    • better built interior
    • ride is a generation ahead
    • Mazda went to court over how they treated CX-5 owners with defective cars, and lost.
    • +4

Mazda went to court over how they treated CX-5 owners with defective cars, and lost.

Hopefully, they've learned from this and will provide better service to new owners with defective cars :)

      • +1

        Me fail English? That's umpossible.

        • +22

Sorry to correct you mate…but it should read unpossible.

      • +3

Nope, I own two Mazda's and while the cars are great, any issues your stuffed. Mazda are constantly out to shaft you. Well that's my experience and how I feel.
I like the CX-5, but just can't buy another Mazda, think I will go Tesla. The highlander 3 is amazing, but the Y is more practical, so I will likely stay undecided. Tried BYD and they were not for me.

        • +2

How would you assess the current state of Tesla's post-sale service?

    • +3

I had to decide between the two. I went Mazda as I wanted a petrol.
I preferred the interior. Felt more premium and preferred the analogue look.
I found it drove more like a car than a SUV
The turbo is a lot of fun.
      Torque converter for petrol.
      Less noise in cabin.

Everyone is different though so purchase what’s important to you

      • +4

Same here, I went for the CX5 G35 GTSP, we tested the Honda CRV RS, Skoda Karoq even Lexus NX range. The interior and ride quality was better on the Mazda.

        • What did you think of the Karoq ? was it the Sportline ?

          • +3

@hack: the Karoq looked good in the photos, when got in it , it felt cheap. The interior to full of hard materials and it sits a lot lower than the CX5 it felt. The cabin noise was loud too. The resale value on the them terrible. You can pickup 2023 karoq style 45.5 retail for 36k now if you negotiate

      • +1

I drove my friend's CX5 GT and it's amazing! 2.5 L turbo, it flies and the sound is amazing! He got it via fleet dealers and got a discount of about 3-4k.

        • +1

Agreed, don't know why a lot of people get the KIA and Hyundai. The tech might be better but the build quality espically on the interior still feels very inferior compared to the Mazda.

          • @kwanq: I'm one of those. I bought a Sportage (for the looks plus standard safety) and made the mistake of getting SX instead of a turbo. The difference in performance is so noticeable. Some of the pros for Sportage is it's spaciousness - legroom, headroom and boot space is very good.

          • +1

@kwanq: If you are considering against Tucson/Sportage, the Mazda is a lot smaller for legroom in the second row of seats. The Mazda internet is nicer indeed, and the available engines nicer too.

When my kids were starting to outgrow the rear seats of my wife's CX3 the logical upgrade was the CX5 but ended up getting a Tucson due to the extra legroom.

          • +2

@kwanq: got a kia, not a heavy accelerator driver so the low power didn't really bothered me. (acceleration and deceleration is what eats your fuel !)
obviouslly mazda had the superior engine like everyone said however if i'm here for just a cheaper(1) car with leather seats that gets me A to B(2) with a presentable symmertric(3) interior.
then yeah going for kia (non-turbo model, sport plus ) with 7 years warranty which helps with the future resell value.

also the rear space on a kia usually is bigger, if you care for the passengers(like your kids/parents) i recommend sit in there and compare yourself. leg space is important for kid's growth !

        • +10

Mazda is the superior manufacturer out of Kia and Hyundai

          • +4

@bumluffa: Maybe so in the past. Now they are better in my opinion. Look at EV6 and EV9. High end Sportage has better interior than CX5 i think.

Kia and Hyundai are updating the vehicles better than Mazda in my opinion. CX5 is very outdated. Mazda design language had been that for the past 10 years, with few minor changes. Kia has longer warranty too.

            • +7

@racingmiku: There's a difference between design and reliability

              • @bumluffa: Yep 100%, Mazda's are super reliable, but feature lacking.
I don't rate Mazda service at all though.

      • Well done. I don't think the CX-5 is terrible, its a solid SUV, from a blue chip manufacturer. Glad you're happy

    • For the sportage you’re going to be waiting up to a year. Personally the difference isn’t that huge as you make it appear to be.

    • +2

Kia warranty is better too I think

      • +5

Kia servicing costs is a ripoff. please be aware when buying a Kia.

        • +3

Fair point. I use a local mechanic as I don’t trust the stealerships.

    • +2

By just about every metric, the Sportage is the superior buy

I've been test driving cars the last couple of weeks and though Sportage was on my shortlist, The shiny black plastic interior looked tacky and cheap so was a deal breaker.
The Mazda CX-60 looked and felt the best to sit in (IMO), but was too big and heavy for regular city driving. The CX5 was pretty good overall, but the engine is a little underwhelming after driving a hybrid with the off-the-line torque, that and it only has a regular sunroof and I want a full panoramic sunroof in my next car. They need a hybrid offering in this segment.
Also tried Santa Fe (2023 not the boxy new one which I don't like the look of) is more CX-60 sized but feels lighter and easier to drive, and the hybrid works well for instant torque. My search continues…

      • yeah I'm in the same boat but looking at diesels since work will pay for fuel and I need a car that can tow… the engine on the CX-60 seems to be very decent (6cyl 3.3L TD) but the overall the car is a bit bigger than what I want.

It's only me, my gf and the dog so that's a lot of empty car to be driving around all year!

        • +1

It's only me, my gf and the dog so that's a lot of empty car to be driving around all year!

Similar story, I'd like a small/mid SUV with a torquey engine, and most 4cyls don't cut it unless it's hybrid to get the off-the-line torque boost.
The Germans do this format (SQ5/ the old GLC43 - new one has gone 4cyl/X3 M40 etc)but you're paying $100k+ for the privilege.
My ideal car would be an Ioniq5 N but with Hybrid instead of BEV. Hyundai are about to release a 2.5l turbo hybrid which could be the answer.

          • +1

@1st-Amendment: Try Ford Escape. Cracker car. You won't believe Ford could not sell enough of this in AU.

          • @1st-Amendment: If they do release the that Ioniq5 I would definitely be interested!
