Was looking to expand my plex library and looking for storage options. Lowest price in the last 30 days according to Amazon. I did an extensive comparison including looking at a NAS / DAS with internals for price comparison (my plex runs from a mini-pc), so purely looking at storage per TB cost benefit.

This still came out cheaper per TB than any of those options and I believe is the cheapest price (per TB) for hard drives currently available.

Be warned however, I did by an 18TB earlier this month which was shipped and clicking/dead on arrival unfortunately, however Amazon returns process was easy. Hopefully that was a one off and this order will be fine. Ended up going for two of these, as they have a cheaper per TB cost compared to the 18TB even though it's come down in price since I placed my order.

Yes, it was also an import, but I shipped it back free of charge (to a NSW address for Amazon).
It was purchased through Amazon UK, but via the Amazon Australia.
I did have to get onto Amazon Chat to ask about when it would be processed, as about 15 days had passed since shipping and they had not acknowledged receipt of it, despite Australia Post tracking confirming it had been received.

When i mentioned this to the person on chat however, they confirmed it had been received and would process the refund while I was on chat. Within 24 hours, I had credit back on my Amazon account (as it was a gift card purchase originally).
So all-in-all, a very painless experience for what could have been a painful experience given it was an overseas import.
Have to give credit to Amazon, as I doubt I would've had the same experience with other grey importers like Kogan or Catch.

      • thanks. oh now i remember i had similar experience but with a headphone (amazon uk) yeah exact same.

    • Silly question, but do these drives provide an Australian plug adapter?

    Amazon Refurb - 16TB - $299.00 - https://www.amazon.com.au/Western-Digital-Ultrastar-7200RPM-…

I've been running a few of these without issue. Drives have been operational for at least two years in the stats with power cycle count in the 20's.

Have read about people shucking Amazon drives, putting a old broken drive in the shell, and returning them, so I steer clear of these now.

      • bro, thats internal HDD taht ivana shared.. we cant shuck them….

          What ???

          • +2

@CabSav: Ivanavich was talking about internal drives, and someone replied saying people return broken drives to Amazon after shucking.

You can't shuck an internal drive, was what CyberMurning was clarifying, as that was the discussion of this particular thread.

@MasterScythe: Amazon should have a quick check on returned hard drive fraudsters and ban them for life from the Amazon platform.

    • Are these too loud? I'm considering putting one in living room PC but not sure about the noise level.

In terms of cost per TB this isn't amazing tbh.

    • Pls enlighten buyers who need 8Tb storage, thanks.

  • Is it worth paying $33 more for a 7200rpm 8TB 'gaming' drive? Noting that the 7200rpm (STKK8000400) comes with a small power brick, fancy LED lighting and front USB C and A ports for acting as a hub and connecting other peripherals. The requirement for the external power brick is a detractor. Deciding whether it's worth it when it's mostly just for external storage backups..

    • The requirement for the external power brick is a detractor

True…especially those who only need 1Tb storage, ssd price is slightly more expensive than usb-hdd, https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/881634
Seems like some have high priority on speed & hope that they get 5+ yrs life…no one can guarantee a life of 'external power brick' hdd.

But it seems those USB powered hdd tends to have a shorter life, possibility due to 'the standard for QA is lower for externals (since they are usually used as cold storage or occasional backup media', https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/15929281/redir, https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/15929417/redir

USB powered hdd tends to have a shorter life,
yeah i heard that theory since long time ago - another theory was they put 2nd grade disks to enclosures while the 1st grades sold as internals.
2nd grade doesnt mean defect or fault but just probably imperfect in some ways

        • 'external power brick' desktop hdd 8Tb,
          1.WD Elements/Mybook $AUD ~ 280 low-end sales,
          2.Seagate desktop $AUD ~230 low-end sales,

Is there any likely extra life from WD brand ?
Or buyers can only rely on past experience &/or Backblaze drive stats: seems to suggest negligible differences & hence luck of the draw, https://www.backblaze.com/blog/backblaze-drive-stats-for-q3-…

          • @ab c: no idea. as i said its just theory/rumours.
about brand, dont bother to ask which one is good. when you ask if WD good, 100 people will say yes, but 100 other will swear dont
same with any other brands on earth (the big ones)

  • Can confirm these ones arrived and are working well, came with AU adaptors.
