This model is certainly more expensive than the B&W post last night but I'm hopeful that it will be a set and forget purchase.

  • Fast print speeds up to 30 ppm Black & Colour
  • Automatic 2-sided printing & scanning (duplex)
  • 8.8cm Colour Touch Scren LCD
  • 250-sheet paper tray
  • Wireless connectivity

I price beat with Officeworks bringing it down to ~$507 (but with potential delivery costs if you can't Click & Collect). According to Camelx3 it's all time low is $502

Could be cheaper again via Centrecom but shipping was $70 for me to QLD

Shipping is $70+ for me. Would work well if you're near a store though

I've added that to the post which will help anyone close to a Centrecom.

You can currently get 10% off Amazon cards check ozbargain post. You can probably also price match Amazon with centre com then use Amazon gift cards bringing it down to 450

      • Amazon don’t price match with anyone.

I recommend this one still, same price as it was previously ($371) on GGC. Have had it about 6 months now I think, and it's been the best printer i've owned in terms of "it just works"

I THINK the biggest difference between the two is the one in the OP has automatic 2 sided scanning, whilst the one i've linked is manual 2 sided. Annoying, but not a huge issue for those that are using it at home for the occasional print/scan.

Dual sided scanning is pretty big deal and specific reason alot of people get this machine.

      • Which ink toner do we use for these ones ? How long does the original ones last ?

    • L-8 series a big difference

    • How is it with heavier cardstock, does it have a straight-through paper path option?

What the difference with this one for $100 more

I've had the L8690CDW for a couple of years (bought during COVD) and bought a second unit for the kid as well..
after a third printer now…as well..

seems. no OEM toners for the L8390cdw as yet..

plenty for the L8690CDW unless things have changed.

    • I don’t think this one does dual sided scanning. The one in op does. Also this one looks physically much taller

      • the L8690CDW definitley does double sided scanning and printing… as thats the feature why I bought it for and use it regularly

      • shame the remanufactured toners are so expensive tho, similar toners for the L8900 is 40 bucks for the super high yield ones. Personally I would probably just buy the L8900 if it goes on sale for $730 again. Only downside of L8900 is the chonker size.

  • Would the firmware let you use compatible toners?

    • Most Brother printers are good for this; I can't say this specific model, but ever other Brother I've owned worked perfectly with both toner and ink generics.

I know it's unfair to compare with inkjet but does anyone have a guide on total life cost between the two?

    Inkjet still seems cheaper.
    - initial purchase of the printer
    - ongoing ink cartridges (cost per page)

Ps. I really want a laser but can't justify it

Laser is for volume or if you use it occasionally. The problem with inkjet is the head cleaning, even if you don't use it, every few days it will clean the head. You will also need to service the internal waste ink tank from all the head cleaning after a while. Eventually the inkjet head will wear and you will need to replace it, though that can be said the same of the laser drums. I have a 15 year old laser copier that still for the most part print crisp whereas my 10 year old inkjet is pretty much near the end of it's service life, and that included me emptying out the waste ink sponge/tank once already.

But if you want good quality photos inkjet is still better with photo paper.

I am currently looking at a colour laser to replace my 10 year old brother inkjet, if I want to print photos I'd just goto Kmart or officeworks.

      • This is the reason I finally made the switch to laser. We don't print very often at all, maybe once a fortnight. After 6-12 months, I start getting low ink warnings, despite barely using the printer. Whilst generic inks are cheap, you're still replacing 4 colours worth more often - even if you only print blacks. Then there's also the head drying up/clogging etc. after a couple of years.

I've only had the laser for a shortish period of time, but what i've liked is that "it just works". No wasted ink/toner on cleaning, when I need to change a toner, it will be because i've actually used that colour. I don't print colours often, so I imagine i'll be changing the black 2-3x before I need to touch a colour one.

    • my comment got deleted. i cant be stuffed to retype.

check out the Brother MFC-L2880DW, Wireless Mono Laser Multi-Function, 34ppm, Black on amazon for $262 you can also get a 10% off gift card to make it cheaper. You can claim a portion on your taxes if you work from home.

  • How does this compare to the Epson Ecotank ET-5150…
Both are probably overkill for my needs, I don't print that much but want a robust printer anyway… seems like this brother one would be more suited to my needs?

    • I took back the L8390CDW and got an Epson ET-7500 - it's super cheap for photos, and a better scanner, I prefer the bolder inkjet text vs the crisp laser output (reading glasses hello) - but it lacks the 2 Side scanning. Epson's ET tech is super affordable to run. The Carts do start to add up for the Brother if you do start to do any real volume, and there is a separate drum unit that won't be of an issue for most, but its another consumable. That all said I do think the L8390CDW occupies that niche where it features (including compact dimensions) do present a good buy, keeping in mind consumables.
