What HiFi? Review: https://www.whathifi.com/reviews/kef-ls50-meta

The first time I heard these demoed instore I was struck by the clarity coming from such relatively small speakers compared to anything in it's class and some above. Simply lovely.

Nice find OP - great price, perhaps even an ATL? I use a pair as desktop speakers, definitely overkill, but very happy with them.

    • What are you using to power them?

      • A Peachtree Nova 65SE, might move up the line someday but for now, I’m very happy with the setup.

Paid about this for grey import LS50 Metas and I was stoked at the time. This is a great price.

Using them as desktop speakers as well, but I had KEF R3s before, so it's comparatively tame.

      • Oh very interesting, so do you prefer the LS50 to the R3? I considered the R3 to be a logical upgrade path, but I’ve never actually listened to them before.

  • $890 for stands….. no thanks. Sticking with the Sonos package here

You don’t need the Kef stands

For anyone after a pair of neutral speakers, I can't recommend this enough.

They're good enough that if you're not a basshead, you don't even need a subwoofer if using them in a moderate sized room. But naturally a sub still helps. They reach 26Hz in room (-6db)

They also have amazing clarity through the midrange - though still not enough to understand what's going on in Tenet. There are other contenders that i personally would prefer for midrange clarity such as the Dali opticon 2 mk 2, and the currently heavily discounted Voice 22 from Moon (Simaudio).

But in saying that, these also have craftsmanship (powder coated finish + internal cross bracing) that's unheard of for this price point. As well as a clean and minimalistic design that doesn't scream mancave.

I've had a pair for a bit and even if i prefer other speakers for sound, such as the aforementioned two - these are still my all around favs.

One could argue that no speaker on the market can make sense of what’s going on in TENET

IMHO the best midrange speaker for intelligibility has been my "Sonus Faber Lumina II", they were so good i ended up buying a 2nd set of "Amator" special editions for the upgraded crossover in another room.
The standard Lumina IIs were the same price as the ls50 metas.
Overall a great speaker that i prefered over the LS50meta when I AB demo'd them side by side.
different sound that's warmer and richer, whilst still maintaining detail.
It looks much better than the Metas and hand made in italy with wood finish and leather.
I also own the Kef LSXii, and owned other KEFs, so I'm not a KEF hater but just much prefer the Luminas at the same price point, wish I found out sooner.

      • I feel like i can't really call them competitors. I took a look at the objective measurements and i feel like they're vastly different speakers when it comes to tonality.

The lumina IIs seem more like a competitor to offerings from B&W - where you get vocal intelligibility but at the expense of neutrality.

And i'm definitely not calling you a Kef hater - i get that everyone has preferences in audio, even if they don't know it.

However i do question whether you're perhaps associating midrange transparency with vocal intelligibility - which i feel are different conversations. But perhaps also have some overlap.

  • Great speaker.

I find my Audio Engine A5s to be as good or better than these and half the price.

    • +3

Whilst sound is subjective and you are entitled to your own opinion, that is not an apt comparison at all and has several inaccuracies.
The A5 is a powered speaker with an inbuilt amp.
The LS50 metas are passive and their performance is highly dependent on the amp driving them (which is separate from the ls50).
The A5s are less than half the price.
      Could you qualify better?
Better tonality, musicality, dynamics, lower/mid/trebble, frequency sweep response?
When you listened to the ls50s what amp did they have it hooked up to?

I'm highly skeptical after coming many cheaper active speakers of edifier and the likes, to finally getting my kef lsxii's which are worlds apart.
I've heard the LS50 metas and I find it hard to believe the A5s would even come close in any aspect.

If you want to make an apples for apples comparison I'd say the Sonus Faber Lumina II's are better than the LS50 meta, but that's my opinion and many other people's, but that's not to say someone is wrong for preferring thr ls50metas as they sound fairly different.

  • Now buy a pair of Wharfedale Evo 4.2's to make you happy again…
