We have three new releases (descriptions have been written by Chiara, I'm not great at adding such flair!):

  • Signature Milk Tea: Inspired by the iconic taste of classic milk tea, this flavour combines a velvety, creamy base with subtle tea notes from Amino Z's signature blend of premium Assam and black teas.
  • Earl Grey Milk Tea: Developed with a blend of meticulously selected bergamot and a signature combination of rich black teas, this flavour brings creamy, milky notes for a smooth, satisfyingly elegant taste that’s true to the classic Earl Grey.
  • Caramelised Dutch Cookie: Inspired by classic Speculaas cookies, this flavour combines warm, spiced caramel with a creamy, sweet base. It delivers a rich, indulgent taste of caramelised cookies with subtle hints of cinnamon, gingerbread and other spices.

All flavours are naturally sweetened. We have transitioned over to thaumatin for the fact that it is an all natural plant based sweetener, a superior flavour profile, a neutral insulin impact (as it is a protein) and being very gentle on the gut. A bit of trivia, thaumatin is about 10x the cost of artificial counterparts (eg. sucralose) and more than 5x the cost of stevia based on weight! Our focus remains on product quality.

Five of the thirty flavours will attract a higher price point due to additional cost to manufacture and also higher ingredient costs associated with these flavours. They include the three cookie flavours (+$2.48 per 1kg bag for Caramelised Dutch Cookie, Cookies & Cream, Mint Cookie Crunch) and the two new tea flavours (+$4.14 per 1kg bag for Signature Milk Tea, Earl Grey Milk Tea). All other flavours are at the standard price.

To help guide, here are the category descriptions from the table above:

Category Description
STRAIGHT Unflavoured and optimised for macronutrients (90% protein). Due to omitting flavours and any sweetener, this is just straight WPI from the manufacturer (less than 1% sunflower lecithin added at the point of manufacture). Use in cookies, smoothies etc. Or if you just want the best macros and don't care for taste!
CORE These flavours have between 75-87% protein. They will also be low in fat (0.3-0.8g/serve) and also low in carbs (1-3.7g/serve). As a general guide, suitable if you have strict dietary restrictions and want to keep the carbs/fat down, but want something more exciting than unflavoured.
INDULGE These flavours will have 64-76% protein with a higher serving size. Notably, carbs and/or fat will be higher than most flavours in the core range, generally contributing an additional 20-30 calories per serve. These flavours will also contain extra ingredients that enhance the flavour profile. This extra latitude with macros and ingredients allows us to elevate the flavour to be what we consider amazing, while not being a complete cheat meal. Given the popularity of Aussie Choc Malt, we're experimenting with a few others in this category and have recently released our three new cookie flavours and our two new milk tea flavours.

Why 3kg this time? (Info on WPI Prices and Supply Constraints)

Previously we have done deals for 4-5kg, but given the current supply and pricing situation, we could just not make it feasible this time around. Given that we absolutely wanted to proceed with a Black Friday OzBargain deal, we felt that the best way we could proceed was to reduce the quantity. I'll provide some background.

Many retailers had a price increase this year due to the increased price of whey protein (particularly WPI). Unfortunately prices have continued to increase and supply is extremely limited globally. Currently WPI is practically not available for supply.

After speaking directly with almost 8 international manufacturers of WPI, it seems very unlikely that supply will improve in the next 3-6 months. For this reason (and as I mentioned in my video), we have had to restrict this deal to 3kg to avoid running out of stock. We also want to ensure that we have adequate supply to run this deal without having to end it far too prematurely.

To be completely transparent with everyone, it is extremely likely that we may not be able to run another whey deal in early 2025. While we do typically do a deal every 3-4 months, given the very challenging supply situation, it is quite possible that this may be the last WPI deal for a while.

Commonly Asked - Amino Z WPI / ON 100% Whey / Musashi 100% Whey (The 3 most popular proteins here on OzBargain)

In almost all of our prior WPI deals, I have been asked how our WPI compares to two other very popular products on OzBargain that we sell (Optimum Nutrition 100% Gold Standard Whey and Musashi 100% Whey).

One thing I want to emphasise is that we have sold all three products and despite us obviously having a vested interest in our own brand, we firmly stand behind the quality of all three products (hence why we used to stock all of them).

    It seems as though nobody has asked yet this time around, and since you keep adding flavours I figured I'd ask again:

    What are the least sweet tasting options? The banana one I quite like, the matcha and melon were ok but bordering on too sweet for me, I wasn't a fan of the other asian flavours.

      Iced Coffee and Smooth Milk Chocolate will be two of the less sweeter flavoured options. Other than that, the unflavoured version has no sweetener added at all.

      Hi @Friedchicken, currently those flavours are not yet available to order.

      The new pandan will likely be available mid next week, but we wont make it available for purchasing until it is actually produced.

      The reason being that because we have not ywlet produced this in a commercial quantity, there is always a chance of some unforeseeable issue cropping up when we produce in bulk. While unlikely, it has happened in the past.

      Mango is going to be released but we do not yet have a confirmed date. This likely will not be available until after this deal has ended.

      Hi @cheap4321, most of our customers will just use the pouches. Some will purchase a jar to transfer the powder, but it is the minority.

      In terms of alternatives, the most common that I am aware of is that some people will use snap lock containers or similar.

      In terms of the weight of the powder, do you mean for a serve? A scoop is included which will equate to approximately one serve.

      No firm plans I'm afraid @Pricebeat, I'll provide some background for you.

      We have had a few requests for unsweetened versions and this is something that we have experimented with a little in our R&D. We prototypes we created were okay, but are relatively niche in their market appeal we felt as compared to our standard powders. The reason being is because drinking them straight is not particularly enjoyable (at least for most) and would need to have sweetener added, or mixed in to something like a smoothie).

      That's not to say that this isn't a feasible product. Our biggest challenge is our limited capacity and we therefore need to be very selective with the products we produce. Going down the route of creating unsweetened versions would increase our product range substantially for something that will have a far more limited customer base. As a small business we cannot make the metrics work as we do need to focus on where the demand lies at this stage in our journey.

      So for now, we did decide to focus our efforts on sweetened versions only as this is where the majority of the demand has been from our customers. We have not ruled this out as an option down the line though.

      Anyway, I hope this explains why we haven't released anything beyond unflavoured as a completely unsweetened protein as of yet. This does remain on our ideas list and will continue to be reviewed for feasibility.

What I meant though, was that instead of sweetner if you had similar amount sugar or something else other than a sweetner? I am not up to date with the replacements that can be used. I do like it sweet but I can't get used to the taste of sweetner.

          Ah I see.

          In terms of sweetener, sugar is highly desirable for the flavour profile so I know exactly what you mean.

          The drawback with adding sugar instead of thaumatin would be that this would bump up the sugar (and calories) to a point where it too would become an extremely niche product. We have had a product in the past where we did have sugar mixed in with a protein (both for flavour but also function, as some people do like the carbs there for training), but this product was a complete flop and barely sold at all. The vast majority of our customers do want a low carb/sugar protein powder and so this is the route we've gone down.

          Further to support your position around the sweetener, previously we used stevia which is notably different from sugar. It carries a very distinct flavour and we did get a number of complaints about this. So we transitioned over to thaumatin which is also a natural sweetener, but is more comparable to sugar from a flavour standpoint (though not identical). It has been a much better option for our flavouring. But once again, it isn't sugar.

          There are other options on the market. Probably the most common one is sucralose which is an artificial sweetener. This one is common, but also different from sugar.

          So ultimately to be completely transparent, I can say with confidence that we won't be going down the route of adding sugar as a sweetener into our protein powders, especially after our previously failed experiment. I am also unaware of any proteins out there that use sugar as their sole sweetening agent. They may exist, but most do try to keep the carbs and sugars as low as possible.

      As @grack asked, was there a specific reason why you need to avoid whey protein? For example, allergy, intolerance, avoiding animal products etc?

      If that's the case, you may look to a vegan option which won't contain dairy or lactose, for example this one which we make.

      Speaking broadly, for most, a whey protein will be suitable if you are looking for a protein powder to help assist for weight loss as part of a balanced diet. Vegan is a good alternative to this should you have restrictions around consuming whey.

          There will be a very small amount of sugar from the whey, but it's negligible. Unflavoured whey is roughly 1% lactose (sugar).

          Depending upon the flavour you choose this will alter the sugar percentage. But you can refer to the table above.

          That said, while this is very low in sugar, our vegan protein unflavoured has no sugar. Flavoured versions will have a little.

          I am unaware of whey protein specifically dehydrating you though and am unable to comment on this.

          Whey is a better quality protein and will generally have a better flavour profile relative to the vegan counterparts. Vegan obviously has the advantage of being plant based and lactose free.

    Jay the girls have already sorted me out but I thought I'd give feedback on the new milk tea flavours.

    Taste wise they are pretty good, nice fragrant but could be a bit sweeter like the taro milk tea.

    Both seem to have clumping issues when mixed with water - haven't tried milk. I also mix with yoghurt which has turned out tasty.

      Personally speaking, I do keep my supplement stack fairly lean and mainly use Complete Pre, EAA, WPI and Dextrose. These I would consider my staples mainly for my training. I'll take some Greens if I'm travelling too.

      The others to consider that I will use personally on occasion would be Creatine (strength/hypertrophy) and Acetyl L-Carnitine (Cognitive function/Fat metabolism). I do like ALCAR personally, but honestly it can be hard to quantify what benefit you yield from it.

      In terms of Theanine, I haven't personally used this but there is some research around cognitive function, relaxation and sleep.

      Ultimately it will come down to your needs and what works best for you. I hope that helps!
