  • What’s the transfer speed for this? It says 1 megabytes per second

  • Wonder how it compares to the seagate expansion HDD as that was cheaper

+$100 almost for just 1 TB?

This seems very close to regular price. I would personally wait until it gets close to $30/TB.

There was a similar deal for 5 TB local stock at $169 ($33.80/TB) a few months ago.

This thing is ancient, using micro usb. I’d steer clear.

  • Amazed that we don't have 10tb portable HDDs already tbh.

2.5" HDD's that are in Portable HDD's are dead tech, im surprised 6tb is even a thing since nothing (or VERY few things, i cant name anything that still does tbh) uses them anymore.

      • Can you link to SSD of same size?

        • -2

          SSD's come in 4TB and 8TB

      • I agree that these are obsolete tech, but can always find use for extra storage.

    • I am amazed there are 6tb portable HDD's, as I thought they stopped development of these at 5tb, with SSD to take over from there.

    8TB $268 but not portable

WD vs Seagate…negligible reliability difference ? Thanks.

      I did see WD desktop 8Tb via Amazon Germany Oct-24 ~ $AUD 280, with delivery…normal price now.

  • you can get Seagate X16 16TB for thr same price and then get an external caddy if needed. great transfer speeds

  • PORTABLE 10+ yr life: anyone have positive experience with any brand ?

My experience & note Western Digital Elements desktop-> https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/15929281/redir

10+ yr life: seems DESKTOP & maybe Western Digital is the way to go ? Thanks.

    • Depending on usage, you'll have a hard time getting 10+ yr life on average out of any kind of HDD.

      • Maybe follow the link & note my WD-experience ?

        • +1

I did, it's not abnormal for a HDD, particularly a portable one to die within its first 12 months. Even 'server grade' HDDs have around 2% failure rate/year (with some outliers amongst all brands) and portable ones are just lower quality. Your experience isn't unique.

You should always back up at least weekly, daily if it's documents important to you (ie work). No brand of hard drive or ssd has a guarantee to last a certain amount of time, not a single one. The most reliable storage medium are tape drives but for the price of those you can make your own 3-2-1 backup system that'll be cheaper.

Get your drive replaced with warranty, lost data is still your fault.

    • +1

There are no hard drives rated for 10+ year life - assume you'll need to replace disks around the 5 year mark.
Some last more than this, some last less.

The brand is irrelevant, both Seagate and WD have had good drives and bad drives over the years.

Don't buy Toshiba drives, they have no RMA facility (!!) - when you get a failed drive, your only recourse is whatever slow warranty process your retailer offers.

      • Thanks
