  • good for a shuck?

    • +5

No, you can't shuck WD 2.5" portable USB drives.

      • lol whoops, ty

      • Is that all of these drives? I remember throwing a 2 tb drive into a ps4 years ago. The 500GB ps4 drive went into the external case with some movies and tv shows and adapted to life as a a portable media library.

Edit: I'm pretty sure it was Seagate not WD. Does that make the difference?

        • +3

It does. WD put the USB controller onto the control board, so the drive has no sata port just a USB port. Other manufacturers normally (at least used to) just put a sata drive into an enclosure with a USB controller.

Too bad this isn't the Ultra version that comes with type-C. Otherwise, it's a good deal for 5TB.

    • sure in the future when they do next generation of SSD, old ssd price will drop

  • Can I use it as an internal drive for a laptop?

    • +2

No, can't obtain a SATA interface by opening it up (shucking).

    • +1

      No

I feel like pointing out that if you pay amex via PayPal you will save .8% in fees in case anybody missed that.

  • It's a good deal, but not as cheap as I thought it was. Around the grounds it goes for $179-$229. Gee, they're getting cheap now. Back in the day I got 1TB for $200!

    • +1

I think they're expensive. The price of spinning drives has stayed pretty constant for years now.

      • In REAL-money (after allowing for inflation) the price have dropped, & the cost of making these units have'nt made leap & bound.

Since 2020-Covid19, your $AUD buying power have dropped a-lot. If you believe ABS inflation peaked @ 8% in 2022, have a good-look @ the goods & services YOU-REGULARLY buy?

  • does the Ultra version run faster than this version, noting the Ultra is USB-C?

    • +2

There's a big confusion with USB about the protocol vs the connector. This has a USB3 microUSB connection which can do USB3 speeds (which is way more than you need for a spinning disk drive). USB-C can be used to run USB2, USB3, Thunderbolt, or even HDMI or DisplayPort.

      • so the limiting factor is the type of HD ie mechanical drive vs SSD drive?

        • In this case yes. I believe you can run USB3.1 through one of these micro-USB connectors, so the connector is capable of 10Gbps - it just depends on what protocol the drive actually uses. In this case it's probably USB3.0 which is capable of 5Gbps which is about 10x faster than this drive can transfer data and still fast enough for all but the fastest SSD drives.

  • I want the use it as backup photo for my phone. Can I buy usb C that use with this?
    Thank

    • You should be able to use an adapter, yep

This is a shingled drive, I have one, has lasted a fair while, Use it every single day for hours, all the 5tb Seagate drives I've purchased lasted 13 months.
