What DAS do you have? Do you recommend it?

    • Got a Terramaster D5-300. my first DAS/NAS-still in the box. so can't commends on them mate.

      • Any thoughts on the TerraMaster F5-221 NAS 5-Bay Cloud Storage - sure it’s more expensive, but being an actual NAS running Linux, you can run Dockers, BTRFS, and best of all it hooks straight onto your LAN.

Alas it’s a bit under powered CPU wise, but I looked at the D5-300.

I have to say that I agree, the 16TB and 18TB drives can get pretty noisy. Since I don’t have a Terramaster box just yet, just deciding on which one or wait for the UGreen NAS, Terramaster have been pretty good answering support questions I’ve had for them so far.

Hanging 2-5 x 18TB drives off one computer, I suspect the cooling fans might decide to die just outside warranty.

That being said, Ali express has a sale on for those with the dollars, and I suspect most of the Terramaster gear comes via them.

The drives, well I’ve only got WD Enterprise drives (not the Ultrastor) but they can get a bit noisy clunking away, and I’d expect the Seagate EXOS wouldn’t be much different though please correct me if I’m wrong. The more sound isolation you can get, for any of these 16TB, 18TB, 20TB drives, the better.

        • +2

I have the Terramaster F4-223, it’s only a dual core with 16gig RAM running Unraid with no issues. Although I’m only using it as storage (NAS) not using and docker containers.

Running 2x Exos 16gig for the moment and
          saturates 2.5Gig network no problems.

I noticed the Exos are quite noisy but to be expected for enterprise drives.

    • These are pretty noisy, i wouldn't use a 7200 rpm disk on a nas/das.

      • +2

But if your NAS is not near you does it matter? So it would be relative to position of NAS to humans.

        • I have one of these in my desktop in my home office and I can hear it in the living room below. Pretty irritating sound tbh. The sound from vibrations can travel pretty far

          • +1

@iLoveYourFace: Mine is in a linen cupboard, back wall of that cupboard is the kitchen.
Can hear them seeking in the kitchen, but if I'm honest it's only blatantly obvious when i get up for a drink at night.

That said, my drives are 5400RPM, but i don;t see how RPM makes a difference to seek noise, it's the head making the noise, not the spinning platter.

            • +2

              @virtual81: I always ask for quiet head. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

            • @virtual81: Goddammit… I was seconds from finally pulling the trigger on replacement drives. I set a ban on myself that lasted YEARS. But I can't get drives that are like OLD SCHOOL ones. I'd need to finish my home wiring, and do the server cab in the garage setup. Ain't nobody got time for that.

    • +1

I use one of these https://www.hardkernel.com/product/?orderby=date. Much much faster Intel Alder Lake processor and cheaper than the usual pre-built ones. Can fit four SATA plus USB drives. Runs full windows, can transcode and everything. Obviously buy a case too

      • Which one, sorry? Your query comes up with nothing :)

    • I've been eyeing off the D8 Hybrid https://d8hybrid.terra-master.com/

It has USB 3.[12] Gen2, if you're going a DAS I'd be going for at least 10gbps

  • +2

So this one’s are literally new ?

    • Looks like it.

    • +12

I bought one of these 2 weeks ago and it says they were manufactured in 2021. It would depend on what your definition of new is

    • +5

“New” as in 2020 or so manufacturing date usually (14tb were anyway) 0 power on and 0 hours (which seem debatable how trustworthy that is), no local warranty you have rely on east digital (which are likely bulk purchases for servers - which are not covered by retail channels)

      So yeah “new”

      • +5

it says "100% Generic Firmware", so that smart data is meaningless. I know there are lots of rebuild from recycle hardware in China, so for me rebuild from used parts is never new.

        • does this mean it has been wiped/re-flashed to remove the smart data?

          • @MelBorn: There is no way to know.

Buy from reputable sellers (like this one) with decent warranty (like this one) so you can easily get failed drives replaced.

    • +8

While ED has been reputable on ozb so far… I seriously doubt these are literally new. The price delta with other similarly reputable sellers of similar stock is simply too great.

If you got a bunch of stock that all your competitors are selling for ~$350-$450, you could move through them in a split second even if you priced them around $320, because this target audience watches prices like a hawk. Or more accurately, like thousands of bots scraping prices every few hours.

I'm much more inclined to believe ED is recently more confident with their QA/refurbishment process and has just decided to label these as "New" to charge more. Afterall, they are still offering the exact same warranty as their FRs.

No proof, of course, but all my "too good to be true" alarms are triggering.

      • +1

I agree - I doubt that they are new. They were probably used for Chia crypto mining, then had their firmware reflashed to zero hours and are resold as new.

      • +2

Yea I'd agree with this. I ordered 8 drives of this exact model in 2022. 2 were DOA and three have failed over the last 18 months. Either I'm that unlucky, or these aren't new. Luckily the warranty has been honoured for all of them, and I retrospectively purchased an additional 2 years warranty for peace of mind.

    • typically these are "hot spares" or reconditioned. I can almost guarantee they wont be brand new at this price - but i dont have any evidence to that, except for the price.

  • +1

Of course, because I just finished setting up a nas with 14tb X16s that were $280 a pop…

  • +3

I bought a couple of disks from this lot recently, and they were shipped from Melbourne 2 days after I paid, rather than from HK. Last time I bought from (couple fo years ago) them they shipped from HK.

  • Any recommendations for a replacement for a 1TB 7200RPM WD Blue? I'd like a high-capacity internal drive, but I get the impression that IronWolf's etc. would be significantly louder.

    • +3

what capacity you prefer? SSD would be a quite/reliable option if you only replace a 1TB drive.

      • My case only really has space for one 3.5" drive (PSU cables are stuffed in the second slot), so the bigger the better (4TB minimum maybe) - I suspect I'll need to drop down to 5400RPM, though I'm not sure if that'll have a big impact on performance

    • +1

      https://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=wd80eazz&s…

      One of them.

Quiet 5640rpm 'blue' drive, but still CMR technology.

      • Cheers - been waiting for a sale, but my hard drive is nearly 8 years old now, so it's probably best to take the plunge soon as a precaution.

        • F I'm old. When you say your blues are old… and I've still got 8x1TB blacks sitting in a drawer that I keep saying I'll use-again one day.

  • If you prefer to use ebay instead for an extra $11 per drive
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/276026949272?

    • i was tossing up between this or from shopify. $280 if i want to pay AUD, or i have to pay conversation fee for $272. even with GC and cashback. will be quite similar-so bought with shopify and paid with AUD.

Hey guys are you doing appropriate checks to ensure when you buy these drives, that they are authentic?

Recently I purchased 4 similar high capacity drives from a ebay seller with a lot of postive feedback. lots of unique comments as well. The HDD worked fine initially but had little tells that they were fake. 3 of the 4 hdd I bought had O's instead of 0's in their serial number. This was confimed by reading the serial number electronically off the drive as well. The QR code also failed the test in terms of not being unique to the serial code as well the code under the QR code did not work on the manuf website. One of the drives ended up failing within of week of installation. The drives I bought looked so real and was packed really well. When I corrected the serial number, the hdd even showed up on the manufactuer website.

Anyone have any tips when buying these high capacity drives of how to quickly check if they are authentic? Once my paypal claim goes through I will be buying 4 more drives, so hopefully I can avoid this issue again and still score a deal.

    • +6

This seller does legit stuff afaik. Like what others have said, power on times can be adjusted with access to the right software… As far as hardware wise, they aren't fake

    • not fake components but the drive can classified as fake, read my comment above.

      • I am not totally opossed to this rebuilt drives if they are open to it, and still offer warranty.

But this one says "Seagate Original" and its classified as a New Harddrive.

Anyone have experience with their warranty?

    • Anyone have any tips when buying these high capacity drives of how to quickly check if they are authentic?

Buy from bricks and mortar that you trust…. pay a bit more but less likely to shit itself and lose your data.

      YMMV…

  • I paid $380 so this is a great deal!

    • For the exact same thing, though?

      • Yep. From @Neology 's deal.
        16tb

  • +1

I find that the majority of these abnormally cheap "new" Seagate Exos drives are made in 2020, 2021, and some in 2022. I am no hard drive expert nor insider, but there should be a reason why there is still so much old stock on the market. I always wonder if these x16/x18 batches are either easy to refurbish then fake as new drives or if they are just leftover overstock for Chia farming. (Just my suspicion, no proof whatsoever)

I would be more comfortable buying drives made more recently. If anyone has bought such drives from them, please share your experience.

    • I have 8 x EXOS 16tb x16 for a year now in my Unraid server! Working very well, nothing wrong so far

      • Wow! What do you use so much space for?

        • +18

    • +1

For reference, a reputable seller/shop I know in the local Chinese market is selling these OEM Exos X16 16TB (white label) for about A$343. Since many of these drives are made in China (judging by the listing photos), shouldn't they be available at a cheaper price for their local market? Even if Hong Kong has low taxes on these products, a nearly A$80 difference is significant. And East Digital is paying for international shipping too.

      • +3

Many on Oz buys from ED from GB and I don’t think anyone has a problem.

They ship quick and well packaged and I haven’t had any problem so

      • +1

Having no knowledge of what that shop is you're quoting the price from, however it sounds like that is retail? The whole point of this place is they specialise in the bulk trade of HDDs with no shopfront. They do sell refurbished, but they classify them as such. I have bought from them before, no issues. I am not sure I have seen anyone on OZB have issues with them.

    • +2

Bought one roughly 6 weeks ago - came nicely boxed with foam packaging and anti-static bag sealed.

Performed a surface test on the 16TB no bad sectors. Crystaldiskinfo shows it's values that are standard.

Using it to replaced a WD 6TB which developed bad sectors (drive lasted 6 years)

Previous deals/comments have said ED will replace if its DOA. Definitely for value if you need large amount of storage - just don't use it for critical data if you're worried - or utilise proper backup procedures.

    • +2

Just received my order, took only 5 business days.
Can confirm they are drives made mid 2021. Which is kind of strange as the last two I got through the group buy in 2022 were just 3 months old.

I'll be doing some long tests on this provided by my qnap NAS, will revert back with results when done.

      • How do you check the drives age please?

        • It's on the label as DOM

        • What is the DOM of the ones that you got from neology?

      • test completed in close to a full day - no errors found in either. time to play around with new capacity!

  • +1

Ouch I paid $319 last month

  • Is it only 1 per person?

  • OOS

  • +1

Does anyone have experience with the seller and honouring warranties?

    • Yes-ish (not so much warranty), I bought 4 x 14tb refurbs from them 6 months ago
1 did not arrive and they fixed the error quickly

I am however a little sus that this deal are acutally new, and not the usual server pulls with a firmware tampering

    • +2

      Yup!
Bought one on a previous deal, died after a few days. Contacted and quick response to send back to an Aus PO Box, then received another in few days.

  • Looks like i just missed out :(. Sold out!

    • Their eBay store still has stock at $11 extra per drive

      • Any chance you have a link to it?

        • Someone posted it further up in the comments

  • +4

I bought a WD Ultrastar 16TB direct from them (not via eBay) last week. Arrived in a few days in a packaging so much better than how amazon ships HDDs.

I've had so much bad experience with Seagate non-enterprise drives that's I can't make my mind to buy a Seagate again.

  • Any deals on external 12Tb or 16TB powered drive to use with media player, need to store movie collection.

    • You could always buy one of these and put it into an enclosure.

  • +1

This deal has been there for about a week or so. See comments on this post

I bought 2x X18 16TBs (currently oos on ebay) for ~$286 each using ebay gift cards to avoid forex fees on 11th. They were shipped from HK the next day and scheduled to be delivered today or tomorrow. They were tracked all the way from HK. Quite quick delivery.

    • I nearly bought this last week.

    Warranty …..?

    • +4

      Can’t read or?

  • is this miso soup pack better than the usual ones

  • Are these any good for a nvr?

    • Since it’s made for datacentres it’d be more than capable!

  • -2

Sus factor is quite high here 😆

    • +6

You have a page full of comments from existing customers saying they have bought without issue (or DOA and swapped fine)
Then you have a lot of comments from speculators. "Seems sus, probably reflashed firmware, maybe chia, old mfg date"

      So on aggregate:

      • people who have bought, seem to suggest no major complaints, happy with price
      • people who haven't bought, speculate this is sus.
      • +2

I think this triggers people's "if it's too good to be true it usually is" thoughts. But like you said, lots of people saying they have purchased with a positive experience. I rolled the dice based on this.

      • i mean there are also people who bought and do, in general, trust ED, but still think this particular listing is sus.

don't think it'd be any worse than their FRs, which are pretty good, but this deal is ~$20 over historical FR prices for what are most likely also FRs.

  • +2

Thanks OP. Grabbed one. Bought the same drive in April for $279.

  • +1

Added another one for my NAS - thanks OP.

  • Silly question maybe - I have an older QNAP NAS that the firmware caps each drive at a maximum of 12TB. If I put a 16TB drive in there, will it not work at all, or would I be able to use 12TB of space? I assume it just won't work but I can't see this information anywhere.

    • There is a good chance that the drive won't be recognised by the NAS. I wouldn't risk it.

    • Not sure on that, but maybe just buy their Seagate 12TB EXOS x16 and not have to worry? Save yourself $45 too :)

      https://east-digital.myshopify.com/products/seagate-exos-12t…

      • Yeah, thanks, I wasn't going to risk it, was more curious than anything else.

    • +1

I have an old QNAP TS470 Pro and I run TrueNAS on there instead of QNAP software.
I dont think the "software limitation" exists in with that set up.
Mind you I did change the CPU and installed more ram and NVME in the PCIE slot.

  • +1

Guys, I bought a 10TB Seagate EXOS from Amazon (fulfilled by Amazon US) back in 2020 for AUD$463. Recently, it had SMART errors. Chatted with Amazon customer service who confirmed item had 5 year warranty. Returned via Amazon generated postage label and refund received in a business day.

I would buy again from Amazon in future.

    • Damn. I honestly never knew that was possible.
I had issues with a 16TB mycloud (years ago, now) from Amazon Germany… I tried going direct with WD, and it was a terrible experience. I couldn't wait any longer, due to warranty days from running out & never got any prepaid info… so I paid for DHL express to Philippines myself.

  • +1

Had 2 since Dec no issues also

  • +5

Just a reminder that whether you're buying new, new-new, old-new, refurb, server pull - whatever - have backups of data you don't want to lose.

  • Is this good for PC? I just need a big drive for movies, photos, videos archive storage.

    • It's a sata hard drive. Probably even more reliable then normal hard drive as it's enterprise class.

    • That's what I use mine for.

    • +1

thats what i am using it for as well, i dont have needs for NAS, and i just want more space in PC. if you can fit a 3.5 in your case nowadays, go for it.

otherwise has to be outside of the case which is more involved, coz now you gotta figure out if you just want a simple USB connection with a enclosure, or via Ethernet start doing NAS shit.
