Seagate 12TB Exos X16 3.5" Hard Drive $215 Delivered @ East Digital, Hong Kong

320

Seems like a decent deal.

It's $215 aud including tax and free shipping, and you get a 3yr warranty.

However, they look like they're 2021 stock, so keep that in mind.

Based in HK, so good luck enforcing ACL

        • Sure thing, if you want ACL you pay approximately 2.5x the price
I would have spent 3K more buying the same locally

          • +1

@Darude Sandstorm: You can buy refurbished drives off Amazon that are covered by the ACL for the same price

            • -2

@MagnamoniousRex: Amazon refurbs have less than zero pedigree.

East Digital are a known seller, and a quality drive supplier - you'd be crazy to go with unknown randoms instead 🤷🏼‍♂️

              • +1

@Nom: Unknown random I am guaranteed a return to by law > "known seller" I'm not guaranteed a return to.

But in this case the "unknown random" is Amazon, who under the ACL are liable for goods sold on their store regardless of who technically sold it.

    • I've used them before and it went well

      • +2

Purchasing experience doesn't really matter, return experience is what matters

        • true, the hdds have worked well, packaging was better than any other drives I've had shipped, and I haven't needed to return them (yet)

    • +3

Bought 5 hdds from them, all 16tb
No issues with them, packaging was really well done too. Keep in mind they sell refurbished and used, I only purchased new.

    • Just reconfirmed with a msg to them on ebay
      "Yes, the website is ours.
The drive in the website store are consistent with those on eBay, please feel free to buy.
Thank you for your attention and support."

      • Is there an email address I can write to them at to find out how old these drives are? The dom?

Can't seem to find it on thier website.

        • Not sure how that matters when it is covered for 3yrs from date of purchase from eastdigital (it's not covered under seagate international warranty). I'm ok as long as they are brand new.
Last time it was just a few months old

  • Bought a 12tb Skyhawk recert from these guys recently, did a fairly thorough pre check on it and seems to be all good. Shipping was reasonably quick and packaged well. Would buy from them again

  • Keen to hear from others on this.

Read on another post that the 2022 firmware is flashed to make them look new (hence 'old stock comments' but could have been running 24/7 for last few years.

But then on same post that east digital is legit… so 🤷🏻‍♂️

Every hard drive has a Date Of Manufacturing on it with a barcode that confirms the serial and DOM in seagates database. They are also covered under seagates warranty.

They can’t just make that up as it’s in seagates own website.

      • Mmhm. Well tbf, you have to actually have to buy it and wait till it comes to see the barcode.

        • but i mean now i'm supposed to believe that the vendor flashes the firmware AND falsifies the barcode… I mean that's… dedicated

      • They are also covered under seagates warranty.

They don't have Australian warranty but east digital covers it (3YR EastDigital Warranty).

        • Seagate warranty is global I thought? You send it to Taiwan, no?

          • +2

@Larsson: You send it to a NSW warehouse if it's Aussie consumer warranty.

Drives sold by sellers like East Digital may be bulk buys that Seagate may not allow you to claim warranty individually and directly with them. You have to go through the seller. This is a very common practice with non-retail stocks like non-retail packaging CPUs.

    • Yeah I was wondering that too.

I've heard lots of good things about them on here so I was like hey why not.

I actually don't even know for sure if it's an older drive, it's just that the one in the thumbnail has a 2021 mfg date.

I'll let you guys know when mine arrives.

      • just checked the ones i bought end of 2022 - they are both validated by seagate with correct serials but not under seagate warranty for either hongkong or here, but DOM on the labels say they were manufactured just a few months prior to me purchasing.
Edit: perhaps ED buys these for cheap with a contract on seagate without warranty - hence they ask to return any drives for warranty to them but not to seagate. I'm yet to hear anything bad about their return/warranty policy/process.

      • Looking forward to finding out too.
. Why don't you also just message and ask them?

  • good deal, i am after 16tb variant for a while and was waiting for their ebay prices to go down.. looks like shopify store has it on sale too..thanks OP.
PS: i've bought from them before on last groupbuy and they have been working well so far.

    • Same.
I promised myself years ago, I wouldn't buy any more drives for the NAS. But spinning rust is wrecking our experience. So a cheap whopper like these (well, I'd prefer 16-18TB) is perfect.

      $216 for 14TB good?
      https://east-digital.myshopify.com/products/seagate-barracud…

My NAS is really DAS, and currently my PC. So do I want a bunch of screaming drives next to me, while gaming?

      • i have the nas on the other side of the house

also the diff btw. the 12 and the 14 is the 12 is new, the 14 is refurb

      • Just build a proper DIY NAS, cheaper, better, etc

        • +1

Probably better, but impossible to be cheaper than what I have.

I built a very powerful SFF next to my monitor, and have 2 cheap USB3 HDD docks (that I've already owned for years, total 12 drives) with all the content. Was previously attached to full ATX with another 8 drives inside as well).

PC runs 24/7, and serves the whole house (and remote friends via Plex), plus gaming etc. thought about doing multiple virtual/remote desktop setups for the kids… But optiplexes are dirt cheap.

          • +1

@Ulysses31: I have the same, Plex on Optiplex. Was able to score a deal on ebay for Optiplex 7080 i9 10900 with 64gb ram for $700 couple of weeks ago. I have 20 drives connected to it (some of them 3tb) which have all done more than 50k power on hours so looking to swich to larger drives (to reduce the number of drives and to extend life etc).

  • Do East Digital have an eBay store?

    • yes but there the price you pay is higher as ebay charges GST and the prices are in USD https://www.ebay.com.au/str/eastdigital?

      • Thank you for the link kind sir.

Yes, $260 vs $215. Big savings.

        • +1

I wrote to them and asked how old these drives were.

To quote "most of which are from 2021 or 2022."

  • +2

I bought a 16TB drive from them in April. It started to experience errors last month, I emailed them and within about 2 hours had a response to send it back (at my cost) for replacement. I posted it and I'm awaiting the replacement drive but the process so far has been really painless.

    • How much did postage cost you?
Did you post it to a local Aussie address or overseas?

      • +3

I posted it to somewhere in Victoria, I think it was around $15 including the envelope.

        • +1

Did they refund your postage costs?

          • @bamtan: postage at your own cost, they do respond to the email, but experience is not great. In the Email, I was told they will ship the replacement disk once they got my returned faulty disk, I emailed back with tracking number showed the item had arrived, and they reply "Do you need to send replacement products?", I can only assume they try to say"Do you need us to send replacement products?", I am like isn't it that obvious, otherwise why would I bother to send you the faulty one, then no update from them, I just sent another email to follow up, ask for update, feel like squeezing a toothpaste

These are brand new, right? Not Factory Recertified? And is this Seagate 12TB for $183 at the same store not a better deal?

    • Good find, would like to know as well.

      • +1

I could hardly find anything about the xxx027 model, other than newegg. Didn't have great reviews there, but neither does the subject of this post.

        Seagate has confounded product naming!

        • Almost twice the cost though. Good find.

Anyone see any issues using one of these in an external hardrive enclosure such as this one? https://www.amazon.com.au/ORICO-Toolfree-External-Enclosure-…

    • Was wondering the same thing …. with the price of external HDDs, this seems like a far better option, if it works?!?

    • no expert here but i don't foresee any issues. These are built for 24x7 operation, so if at all these would be an overkill imo if you don't intend to use them 24x7.

  • +1

Ebay prices have been dropped! Noticed by using gift cards we get better exchange rate so was able to order 2x X18 16TBs (new) for a bit less than what it would have cost me on shopify

  • thx got 2, came in like 2 days. seems to be from NSW warehouse? also the packaging was excellent. Cheers

  • anyone know if exos series is definitelly better than this? https://east-digital.myshopify.com/products/st12000nm0127-se…

the the one on this deal is already sold out :(
