If it's broken. Expect a world of pain with Sony eBay.

Do yourself a favor and get a tcl c755 new in the black Friday sales.

    • +2

Wouldn't you be better off getting the tcl c855?

    • -1

65C855 will be $1.3K to $1.4K for those who can wait: IF they have lots of stock in May-25 & hence must clear warehouse-space for C865 model, lol

      $1.6K @ 1st round of moving-stock & more to come-> https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/871958

      Proof: review prior-years posts here C8?5: C825 to C845.

      • But X90L would be better than 65C855 ?

        • +3

Processor wise yes and day to day speed, but QD Mini LED vs Full Array LED is a massive difference

I have bought 3 box damaged TVs from Sony. None of them even had a mark on the box, let alone damaged.

      • +1

Wow you should complain. Not as advertised!

    • As far as I know TCL uses different panels for different regions. Like, North America and Europe get the better ones and APAC the bad ones. So the TCL (and also Hisense) in Australia wouldn't be as good as the reviews suggest. This is from my research 2 years ago though; this might not still be the case.

      • +3

You may be thinking of Hisense. It's well documented that Hisense provides better panels to the north American market (as well as Google tv while we get the much inferior VIDAA). They use different model numbers here too.

I may be wrong about TCL, but happy to be corrected. I think they ship the same panels worldwide for the 835, 845 and 855 series.

I bought a "refurbished" Sony TV off them on eBay. Few months after purchase was mounting it on the wall and realised one of the HDMI ports was just smashed (someone had obviously forced a cable into it and broken it completely). So they don't even inspect the tv's or they just blatantly ship out broken products.

Now luckily all the other ports work and the TV does function but they were unwilling to help. Fair enough, I didn't notice straight away.
However many people here can tell you the poor experience they have had, honestly don't know how eBay have not banned them from their site with all the dodgy shit I have heard they pull.

If you have any issues with these TV's I am willing to bet you won't get a resolution from sony.

      • Exactly.

I had an issue where I bought refurb, arrived, I plugged it in after reading some terrible reviews online about them, picture looked fine, so I moved it up 2 flights of stairs and wall mounted it.

Later that night went to watch a show and the audio sounded like it was being played underwater. I did factory resets, tried everything, nothing could fix it, a hardware fault.

Clearly they had not tested it before it left their warehouse, the refurb was simply ship it out to the next poor customer. The box looked like it had been through 3 wars. So I'd say I was probably the 3rd or 4th customer to receive this TV.

I contacted support, and wanted them to get me a replacement, of equal or better value. They said "we have no stock, we can only do a refund"

The refused to offer any sort of compensation or assistance to get it off the wall and reboxed, and send back to them.

I told the rep they'd be ending a relationship with a lifelong sony fan, and they didn't care.

So I bought a TCL C755 and I love it, and now every time I see a Sony post, I'll let people know about their crappy customer experience policy.

I received a broken 85" 90L from this seller and they were very helpful in troubleshooting and confirming the fault. The service was great and they booked DHL to do all the shipping back and forth. The 90L is an amazing series, 120FPS gaming and google voice assistant, although it doesn't wake up when casted to like my 90K.

  • No shipping to SA?

Those who are leaning toward the perfect-side, maybe stay-away from Box-Damaged & Refurbished…Sony-AU ebay seller.

I can post evidence as proof of my experience, lol.

Btw, those ebay-AU feedback are rigged: large-sellers do request their NEGATIVE-feedback remove 😱, eg Sony-AU. But you knew that ?

    • Could you tell what happened? I wouldn't buy the refurbs but box damaged doesn't sound too bad.

      • REFURBISHED: my Sony KD-55X7000E had a vertical-line, 1 third from the left & hence in the field of vision…@ 1st turn-on😱. I can see it sitting 3.5m away. It had scraped marks at the bottom of the TV (dragged on the floor without-stands). It arrived in a DIFFERENT-box (diff. model #) & hence RE-packaged. The RE-packaged-box received was good.

The cause could be anything: from MIS-understandings/BAD-process within Sony-AU, to UN-happy technician action: leaving soon & don't care ?
Could be a returnED item from another-customer, or EX-display-model @ a show etc.

BOX DAMAGED: as a min. I would like to cite it & review the damaged-box: was it a mere edge-focused-contact, or it was BAD-dropped & sign of twisting. I don't recall seeing ebay posts with photos by ANY-sellers…luck of the draw? Assuming you want TV to last 5+ years: components are fragile & drop-boxes are risky…despite heavy-foaming @ top & bottom.

Sony warranty is 1 yr, while TCL is 3 yrs.

If Sony-brand is LOW-priority, consider TCL C855 with heavy-discount as per this post. If many people does this, then its clearance-prices will be poor, lol

        • +4

I bought 3 box damaged from Sony eBay store. None of them had any marks on the box, let alone damage.
All 3 TVs are still working - first one is from 2015/16 era.

        • +1

What happened when you contacted Sony? Issues happen, but did they replace it?

I wouldn’t care about the attitude of the technician so long as they fixed it. Sounds like it was an open and shut case to just replace it.

You have a weird way of typing.

Also, it is well established that Sony box damaged is just a way for Sony to undercut retailers and RRP. The boxes are usually not even damaged at all.

  • +2

I have purchased from them in them in the past, courier damaged item in transit and returned the TV to Sony without attempting to deliver. Sony sent another out quickly without issue.

They even gave me a partial refund for the inconvenience.

    Wouldn't hesitate to buy again.

    • Did they replace with another box damaged or new

  • +2

I bought a 75" "box damaged" from them last year, the box turned out to be in perfect conditions. Everything was good as brand new.

    • -6

'Box Damaged' does buyers know how-bad…luck of the draw & long-term ?

    • +1

Same - bought 3 box damaged in different years. All boxes with zero damage. All TVs still working perfectly.

What do you guys suggest as better value this 65 inch tv or Samsung 55 inch OLED (EPP) for same price?

Not too much fussed with the size as I will use it for watching while indoor bike riding. That is my budget and don’t want to go above it.

    • +2

If size is not important and the room you ride won't be super bright, the OLED will be vastly better:
      - Richer colours
      - Wider viewing angles
      - No blooming

However the Sony has google tv built in, but that can be remedied on the Samsung with a Google streamer or Apple tv.

      • Thanks will be using Apple TV.

    • Samsung 55 inch OLED (EPP)

SEE-it for YOUR-self @ JB-Hifi via their daisy-chained TV & compare it with other-TVs. Even better, ring & ask for permission to test-DEMO clips/movies that you're most likely to use: whatever it's. Be aware of viewing distance, angles etc etc etc. Be 100% clear of YOUR-criteria…there IS subjectivity & many variables at-play.

Take ALL your research as a guide, eg including Rting reviews.

      • Thanks. Will have a look. Currently using an old Samsung 40 TV.

  • I have one of these from a previous deal, item arrived with those packaging straps (you know the really rough and tough ones they put on large freight boxes?) and that damaged the box, but the contents inside were perfect.

Great TV so far, Google TV is fantastic and responsive. Only complaint is on very bright screens (i.e. Bluey's opening credits), the corners are darker (apparently quite common with mini-led tv's).

I bought this over a TCL855 because I found the highly reflective glass on the TCL panel too distracting despite it being a fantastic display otherwise. It definitely had more vivid colours though (almost Samsung-esque) if you prefer that. Best to see both panels in store before deciding.

No real comments on after sale service though as no issues so far.

    • The darker corners, aka corner vignetting, has become kind of a Sony's signature now. It's annoying to some people, but I like it.

  • I bought a boxed damaged a95k last year. Box was in perfect condition and TV was perfect too. From my own experience I was happy with the purchase especially for the added savings

Looking at the comments looks like it could go either way tho, best of luck

    • Out of curiosity, how much did you pay for your a95k?

  • +1

I believe damaged box is just an umbrella title they will give stock they can not legally sell new. Personally I wouldn't touch it.

Like many have mentioned, their box and tv were perfect condition, so obviously it's not a damaged box. Perhaps more like a return and fix.

Sony aren't what they used to be with manufacturing TVs. I've had their third party contractors out before when my Bravia stopped working a few months out of warranty period.

I'm not sure what brand is best these days, but LGs built between 2012-2015 were excellent. Many old plasmas still going so strong today.

    • No they are a different category - REFURBISHED. They are also not seconds, which are another category.

All of mine have been brand new in an unopened box that showed no signs of damage.

This has been well established here multiple times.

      • -1

This is my point exactly, why are they selling you a tv under the sale term damaged box when it is perfectly fine.

I'm telling you now there are techies in every capital city contracted to Sony going around the state fixing a bunch of Bravias every day. I've had the conversation with them. Sony are even offering free out of warranty fixes if you ask because although they will not admit it they know there are TVs are faulting out the factory way too early.

        • Every brand has people fixing TVs under warranty. They would be fixing TVs out of their 1 year warranty because ACL statutory warranty obligates them to do it… especially if it's an expensive TV. And having a chat with a repair tech doesn't give you anything more than anecdotes.

And again, repaired TVs are sold by Sony as refurbished condition, not box damaged. It has been established on this site by many customers that box damaged TVs are usually in undamaged boxes and there is speculation that it's a way to liquidate excess new stock.

          • -1

@lunchbox99: To put simply the best companies have no refurbished sales because their products last long enough to last until the next technology cycle.

The "repair tech" was the company solely responsible for repairing Bravias TVs state wide. Do you actually know what refurbished is and how the onsell cycle works with in Sony?

It's when something it's brought back up to working condition from a non working state. Sony, like many other brands just don't make the gear like they used to. Look at PlayStation, most PS1 and PS2 consoles are still going strong, yet the HDMI ports on PS5s are already a wide spread issue. When you buy a PS5 refurbished from Sony that's a faulty console that was sent in by someone else, they then provide them a different "refurbished" console back. Fix up all their factory faults on that one and go on to sell that PS5 to someone else.

You need to get out of your consumer shoes a moment and really think about it.

            • -1

@Growth: ALL companies have refurbished products. ALL companies have products that die.

You're just unfamiliar with the sales channels used by the companies to flog refurbished stock.

Just go to goole and search "refurbished TVs". You will find multiple Australian retailers selling factory seconds and refurbished stock for every TV brand on the market.

Frankly you need to stop taking personal anecdotes and individual experiences as representative of an entire market.

              • -1

@lunchbox99: Most companies have products that other companies sell as refurbished, but not all companies sell refurbished products that they manufacture themselves.

Refurbished products of 7 years + old is understandable, but when you've got high quantities of refurbished gear that's only 24 months old that's a red flag for a poor quality control on the production line.

You are essentially buying something that was later discovered to be a REJECT with a more palatable term of factory second.

                • @Growth: Listen if you are so convinced Sony is bad then don't buy them. Why are you commenting so much on a Sony TV thread if you don't even like them.

Go elsewhere are stop wasting everyone's time.

All of my Sony TVs have been fantastic.

                  • -1

@lunchbox99: Ahh your colours are really starting to shine with the last two messages, nothing constructive more to say so just trying to move the conversation to personal. Nice chatting with you buddy, take care.

  • Bought the 55 from Sony eBay last time. $1250. Could not be happier. Really amazing picture and is better than my lg C1 OLED

    • I’ve got a LG C1. Is this Sony better just in terms of brightness or other areas?

      • This is just my opinion but along with brightness it's a just a more detailed and enjoyable picture. It's just looks great watching movies and the Sony processing for anything else your into like sports and regular tv, older formats is a bonus.

        I wouldn't necessarily upgrade to a x90l from a C1 but I think it's a better all around tv.

Check out digital trends and HDTV on YouTube.

My C1 cracked while moving so I jumped on the x90l 55 box damaged (was no damage to box at all) for $1250 and love it.

The Samsung OLED s90c from last week for $750 will never be able to be beaten as far as deals go. That would have been a nice upgrade from your C1.

  • Is anyone else seeing the $99 delivery?

  • I never noticed this $99 delivery for Sony TVs until this week, has that always been the case?

  • I'm not getting the pricing displayed in this deal

It says $1,789, and the coupon is max $300 off so $1,489, not $1484.87. Then there is $99 shipping on top so $1,588

  • Got new one from HN, 1595 plus 10% gift card

  • Got the 75" X90L from JB this weekend with the Perks + gift cards sale for ~$2150 … from what I've read on OzB on previous sales close enough to play the damaged product lottery.

    • Got a Bravia 7 from JB last week for same reason, but it also came with a JB HIFI carton damage sticker on the box and had small tear and mark on the front in the bottom corner. The guys from JB wouldn't offer compensation as they inspected the tv when I went to collect it and confirmed tv and screen were fine. They didn't have another unit at the store so it would have meant another week for one to be transferred in.

I suspect Sony is just reboxing those kind of box damages with a new box and selling them cheaper. Once it's with the retailer and they damage the box, they can't send it back to Sony and we just end up with it at full price still.

  • for not much more i would prefer the bravia 7 QLED
some great reviews online against the samsung QN90D flaship
sony has wifi 6 vs wifi 5 for the samsung

    • Yeah this was in my cart but this $99 postage has me not pulling the trigger

      • i got free postage from the ebay listing and with the voucher it was around $2k too my door

        • I saw you are based in Sydney, I tried a NSW address in eBay and it became free delivery - must be a new thing for VIC

Be very careful: this isn’t Sony, it’s some reseller. I bought one which turned out to be faulty and they were ‘very difficult to deal with’ in getting resolution.
