For those who missed out last time this good value Mini PC is back on sale. Be sure to stack it with 10% cashback at TopCashback for further savings.

This one features Windows 11 Pro, Intel N100 4c/4t CPU, Intel UHD Graphics, 16GB DDR4 SODIMM RAM, 512GB M.2 SATA SSD (w/ additional M.2 NVMe slot), 2x HDMI w/ 4K@60Hz support, 4x USB 3.1 5Gbps, Ethernet (Intel), WiFi ac (Intel), Bluetooth 4.0, 3.5mm audio jack and fan cooling.

After checking the UEFI/BIOS on mine, as well as the SSD and other components using signed firmware from the manufacturer nothing malicious was found.

As with all new computers I recommend doing a fresh install of Windows 11 via a USB flash drive. There's no malware concerns with this computer. Sooky commenters who are ignorant to the fact that everything is made in China can audit the code personally with these and do a proper clean install thanks to Look Up.

  • Set the website currency to USD
  • Checkout with PayPal
  • Select your card with no international fees
  • Click "See currency options"
  • Select USD to bill the card in USD instead of AUD
  • Proceed with checkout

  • Hmm not sure why it was so expensive for me:
    AliExpress
    −$104.17 USD
    15 November 2024 .
    Payment $168.52
    Exchange rate
    $168.52 AUD = $104.17 USD
    1 AUD = $0.6181 USD

    • +4

Use a no fee card. Their exchange rate is garbage

      • I prefer PayPal protection over a slightly smaller cost.
Gladly pay $5 if the item never arrives as I will just get PayPal to refund me 100%.

        • +5

In PayPal, you adjust the conversion to happen on your card rather than them doing it at a bad rate. (If you have a zero fee CC)

        • +12

My instructions tell you how to use a currency conversion free card in PayPal. You don't lose the buyer protection from changing the billed currency from AUD to USD when choosing the card in PayPal.

  • +1

Seems awesome? The ram, SSD size…

  • Is warranty claim from Ali good or painful?

    • +1

If it’s not a replacement or refund outright then it’s send back at your expense.. so no, not good if you have issues.
If that’s a concern buy from Amazon.

      • +2

Sometimes you can get a return label with AliExpress.

      • +1

If it arrived dead, broken, or damaged, it would probably be quite easy to get a refund but there is always a risk. I am losing trust with aliexpress and can imagine any more complicated issue would be hard to explain and they would try to wiggle out of. Apparently the return window is 15 days after receipt. This means if it stopped working within a few weeks, months, it would be hard to impossible to return. I would stick to amazon, or a company with a warranty. Amazon always seem quite good.

        • +1

My experience with AliExpress returns is superior to eBay in the last year. Amazon is vastly superior as you say.

eBay seems to be deliberately being run into the ground by morons these days.

          • +2

@RedHab: Can’t argue with that, especially re: eBay

          • @RedHab: But is that after the 15 days? how long after? I assume they would be good if it happened early on, but 6 months later or a year I don't know what would happen.

    • +3

I've had to send a handful of items back. If the purchase is covered by AliExpress, they review and assuming they accept just send me a auspost label to print and return to a NSW address. If I choose credit over refund it's instant. I've not had to deal with the seller in these cases.

The few times I've dealt with sellers directly generally wasn't positive. Theyll try to partial refund or ask me to do a change of mind return. Escalating to AliExpress always resulted in a full refund however. It's been a few years since I've had to do this though.

I always stick with items with high number of sales and covered by Ali.

      • +2

This tracks with my experience a month ago, except I got a refund as soon as I dropped the faulty part off at the post office.

Includes extracting and backing up existing drivers

    • +5

Or just install Linux and be done with it

      • Would still extract and record the Windows licence if you ever needed it

        • +1

Is the license not embedded in the BIOS?

          • @DigitalAnalog: Yeah and even then the HWID registration process has been reverse engineered, so backups aren't really necessary.

            • @heef: Yeah, I'm about to reinstall windows on my SOYO (minus the bloat using UnattendedWinstall).

Do I actually need to back up anything?

      • Can all minipcs have Linux installed?

        • +4

          Yep

          All PCs, even Macs

          • @killingtime: Apple Silicon isn't quite in a complete state, but I am very keen for the near future. The new M4 Mini would make a killer linux box. Asahi Linux

            • @heef: Yeh same, I wouldn't rely on it for a daily driver

      Good link.

For the extra paranoid you can extract and scan the BIOS/EFI modules on Virustotal:

  • Can anyone comment on DDR4 vs DDR5 on these CPUs? Im reading up to 30% performance improvement getting DDR5.

    • I'm holding off for the same reason. Saw comments of people struggling to run some games on their machine because of RAM but the same games running perfectly fine on other N100 machines that have DDR5.

    • +5

I’ve got both with negligible difference. Also here are some bench results from a Reddit post :

I have both Geekbench results are more or less identical

There's no malware concerns with this computer. Be careful of the usual racist commenters who hate these because it's "Chinese".

I respect what you do for the community but having this attitude is a mistake. Dismissing concerns about Chinese hardware when there's plenty of examples out there of malware/sloppily implemented firmware allowing for malware attacks as racism is not only lazy, but erodes the strength of arguments against genuine racism.

That aside, how can you say this so definitely? Have you personally audited the code?

    • -1

Australia banning Huawei from its 5G network: racism

    • -2

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Yes I've checked out the code and it's clean. Look Up has even linked a guide on how to reinstall it properly and they found nothing either.

The usual anti-China commenters in the last deal prompted me to add that. As everyone should know by now if you poke me I'll push back harder.

      • +6

You've audited the firmware in all of the hardware components that make up this device, or just Windows?

Look, I don't honestly believe that it contains malware. I just disagree that you can dismiss it definitively.

        • -1

BIOS/UEFI where the scaremongers would claim it's hidden. Because let's be real if it was any other brand we wouldn't be getting these comments. I.e. Dell who are using components made in China.

Can you show me dodgy firmware in the Intel network card?

          • +3

@Clear: Um… I recalled issues with pre-install software/setting in other well known brand such as Dell/Lenovo/HP.

Usually I won't goes so far as firmware/bios due to lack of knowledge. But a fresh installation of OS is a standard process for ALL Windows pre-installed device due to the ease and removal of bloatware as a bonus.

            • +1

@User7699: Correct. Anyone who thinks you shouldn't do a fresh install is silly.

              • +2

@Clear: The problem is a lot of people buy from these deals and don't format the machine. And when you say "There's no malware concerns with this computer.", why would a non-technical person put in all of the effort in to learn how to do this correctly?

                • +2

@Aureus: Because others have done it for them. This device is clean. There's no evidence it is malicious. None at all. When challenged no one can ever come up with evidence.

It's interesting how this one gets targeted when it's never had a malware scare, while Kamrui has multiple times and it doesn't get questioned when it's shared from Amazon every week.

So again it's cherry picking because I called people out and they don't like being exposed.

                  • +1

@Clear: I don't think you are exposing anyone. I am all for calling out racists, but not people who are just concerned about malware.

You are telling people to do a fresh install, which is good advice.

Most of these mini PCs have no reports of malware, but unless you know and trust this brand and are fully confident that the supply chain is fully secure it is smart to do a clean install of Windows.

                    • +2

@Aureus: I'm happy to link the ones known for crapping on anything China if you wish. They're easily found in the last deal where the original description was copied from.

Because that's the only reason the remark was added. I shouldn't have included it in the new deal.

                      • @Clear: Fair enough and I will take your word for it.

                      • @Clear: i support you including the pre emptive words in your new deal. Its good to call out the bs and nonsense before it happens

    • Even if someone pulled out the SSD, scanned it on another computer, people will still have doubts. Therefore, just do a fresh install. OP recommends in the deal description.

Anyone who is concerned about BIOS malware, either don't get this or use this only for non-critical tasks (don't sign in with your real accounts, create some fake accounts - i.e. Luke Skywalker).

If you use Google, Apple or Microsoft products, you are being "profiled" (and I am being nice). Apple forced me to upgrade my old iPhone by doing a remote de-activation of the device over the Internet. Even OZB has some stats on registered users. Amazon, online retailers, you expect all of them to have pristine gold standard handling our personal data?

It's fine to be cynical about these cheap mini PCs, but do think about all the other services and providers as well.

      • -4

Wait until they find out Dell are using components made in China and when they found out how much of the local/state/federal government are using Dell servers for their infrastructure.

Oh the horror. It won't matter though. They only cherry pick.

Google is a good example because they don't store any data in Australia. US and Europe. They can't tell you where exactly in Europe so who knows what countries are having access.

I challenge the neggers to prove me otherwise. There's evidence easily found regarding Dell and Google.

    • +3

Stop stop stop! You're hurting the feelings of Chinese people!

      • -3

Which happens to be the majority of OzBargainers 😜 Chinese is the dominant ethnicity group here. Sorry to disappoint you.

        • really, i would have said Canadians

        • How do you know? Is there something on profiles to specify country of origin? I would have thought there would be a few maltese and Italians too.

          • +1

@drspy00: OzBargain's own stats they've collected multiple times and you can base it off the photos from the several dozen meet ups Australia wide each year.

  • Do they have a dual lan version of this? Interested to install opnsense.

  • Is this fanless?

    • +5

Seems to be plenty of fans of this PC on ozbargain

    • It has a fan that ramps up when CPU starts working. It’s quiet though.

  • Can you play cod and latest fps games with this mini pc? 😬

    • +2

You definitely maybe probably highly unlikely could. How does 2fps at 720p sound to ya?

    • Could stream the game from Xbox I guess

    • +1

Yes or no should be suffice 😅
Like if it’s a no then I’d be looking to get a gaming PC then but yeah was curious how these little mini PCs would handle PC games

      • +1

Maybe a cod that released 15 years ago. This will play games from the ps3 era at best, nothing newer.

    • +2

      Yeah CoD 1.

  • +2

These run windows 11 24H2 perfectly but it’s NOT a gaming machine. Installing Linux (Ubuntu, Mint) however and you have something special. Media machine for a TV or student/home office use it excels and is a lot cheaper than the new iMac with more storage to boot! Makes a joke of apples pricing and I have an iMac on its way! Fun fact, I wonder how this might go as a cheap hackintosh? Ideas and or links???

  • +1

Heads up, this only has a Wifi ac (aka Wifi 5) adapter inside.
If your home wifi network uses WPA3 encryption it won’t be able to connect. I needed to set mine back down to WPA2 before it would work.
Also the wifi speeds are rubbish, I have Gigabit HFC but this only gets about 100mbps down in speed tests.
    Ethernet is fine though.

    • +3

Very easy to upgrade the wifi/bt cards in these machines. You can often find Intel AX210NGW v3 cards with WiFi 6E 160MHz support delivered from AliExpress for about $20.

Just watch a YouTube video if you haven’t done it before and be gentle with the antenna connectors.

      • Didn't know that, I'll look into it, thanks!

      • +1

Nope won't work. I opened it up and it doesn't have a spare M.2 slot compatible with a wifi card. :(

  • Can it be good a alternative for NAS. I just want to do a plex server. Thank you

    • I use a KAMRUI N100 16GB mini pc for a emby server where my media is on a synology DS420j. Have had up to 4 streams going (2 LAN, 2 over WAN) and also running a Enshrouded dedicated server with 4 players on it at the same time. It all ran smoothly.
I assume Plex is similar to Emby in requirements, so I say yes. Depending on how many streams/transcodes and the quality/size of the content.

  • Tempting given specs to price but might hold for for a black friday local deal and warranty - hate long waiting for AliExpress items.

    • +1

In my experience I tend to get the AliExpress orders quicker than Amazon. Since Aramex take a good 2 weeks, while AliExpress is about a week.

If only there was an Amazon warehouse in every state 😜

      • Yikes Aramex is the worst, I'm sorry Amazon has done this to you.

        • +1

I'm just glad I'm not getting Fast Horse delivery. I hear that's the worst

    • So you'll wait 2 weeks to order, so you won't have to wait 2 weeks for delivery now? Seems a curious strategy

      • Item at the same time (highly likely earlier via Amazon) plus local stock if any issues. Seems sensible to me. And I should know because I'm quite sensible.

  • Could this stream games from a main pc to this via ethernet?

  • After reading feedback on site i have the following questions….,
Does wifi and bluetooth work in conjunction with each other?
Do you receive a valid windows license key?
How much does the unit weigh?,, I would use it as a travel pc and use hotels tv with bt keyboard.
    Cheers.

    • Wifi and Bluetooth work. If you've set your router to work with only Wifi 6 devices (aka setting security to WPA3) you're going to have issues connecting. A valid Windows key is tied to the device. Weight is around 450g.

  • +1

This deal is just so … yo

  • +2

Any stability/install issues with these for with Proxmox host and some VMs?

    • +1

Been running proxmox on this for a few months now with no issues. 20 containers 1 VM no trouble.

  • The coupon code doesn't seem to be working anymore with this

  • Any chance this will run Zwift at 4k?

  • Would these be good for general web browsing, emails etc? everyday PC for an older person that doesnt game or anything.

    • Yes.

General browsing, emails, etc. shouldn't be an issue.

  • are there any of these units with dual ethernet? would love to use one as a proper firewall

    • One example:

      https://vi.aliexpress.com/item/1005007544939207.html

You need to manually choose N100 version and plug type to AU. If you are into firewall and VLANs (OPNSense, pfSense), it might be best to consider ones with 4 LAN ports. Problem with those ones is that they do not come with WiFi and it uses Mini PCIe. If you prefer one with M.2 E key 2230 slot, you need to get a more expensive model which have 10Gbps ports.

While there are N100 mini PCs with 2 LAN ports, you could end up with Realtek LAN ports. Some people prefer Intel LAN ports for pfSense.

  • +1

Can anyone recommend an Australian power adapter to pair with this?

  • The more important question. What do people use this for? And how to set up

    • +1

      Man the world’s your oyster!

I have proxmox on a asus nuc, I run AdGuard, Tailscale, WireGuard Server, Docker, MakeMKV, Plex media server. I have a few instances of docker running. One is a bit torrent with gluetun, arrrs, it tools, pdf converter, speed test that runs twice a day, homepage. I run a webpage through Wordpress too.

Thinking of doing frigate on it for my cameras…

I have another one for flight tracking and my windows machine for work stuff.

      • So mainly for media consumption/serving and bypassing ads?

        • What else do you want it to do?

Home assistant you could run on it, opensense (but you’d want one with dual network ports).

          • @kfp187: Thanks. Wasn't criticising just curious. Running a torrent server sounds great..

            • @robertm: Look at the arrrs on docker. Especially if you have a nas.

If torrent server is your thing…
