Quite a good price on this Intel N100 Mini PC that includes both 16GB of RAM and 512GB of SSD storage. While it's not an all time low you can stack it with 12% TopCashback and AliExpress Coins for further savings.

This one features Windows 11 Pro, Intel N100 4c/4t CPU, Intel UHD Graphics, 16GB DDR4 SODIMM RAM, 512GB M.2 SATA SSD (w/ additional M.2 NVMe slot), 2x HDMI w/ 4K@60Hz support, 4x USB 3.1 5Gbps, Ethernet (Intel), WiFi ac (Intel), Bluetooth 4.0, 3.5mm audio jack and fan cooling.

As with all new computers I recommend doing a fresh install of Windows 11 via a USB flash drive. There's no malware concerns with this computer. Be careful of the usual racist commenters who hate these because it's "Chinese".

“Powerful like a gorilla, yet soft and yielding like a Nerf ball.”

    • One I saw today said "The product …meets the requirements of Hehe, An and soft Third Avenue."
Sent it to my mate and he's like WTF is that.

  • +1

So many these mini pc brands, I guess they all must be coming out from the same factory, but just stamped with a different name on the shell?

    • +9

Yeah many of them are just OEM/ODM products with a different badge. Soyo is a bit more reputable as they're owned by the same company as Maxsun who make Intel/AMD motherboards and Nvidia/AMD graphics cards and Teclast.

      • SOYO have made Motherboards for a very very long time, I'm pretty sure they were around in the 90s !

  • +8

Good deal for a mini-server. Install Jellyfin and enable QSV.

    • +21

I know some of these words.

      • +4

Good deal for … jelly … and …

        • Peanut butter. It's gotta be that.

      • This is really how I feel when I try to understand home servers

    • Terrible deal for a mini server that requires storage. You can't install any extra drives, and no chance of using higher capacity HDDs.

If you have to buy a NAS in addition, might as well just run jellyfin on the NAS.

      • +3

Don't always need local storage though. zurg+rd is sweet way to get a decent Plex/JF library filled. My bro has over 1000TB (not a typo) running from a little Beelink behind his TV. These little mini PCs are also normally much better equipped to handle any video transcodes required than a commodity NAS.

But yes, for some with local storage and no transcode needs a NAS may be better.

Different strokes for different folks and all that.

        • Does that 1000tb live in multiple ATX cases? I'm wondering how it works.

          • +1

@Caped Baldy: It's all held at Real Debrid (subscription download service) and mounted up on his Beelink as remote storage. Doesn't have any physical disk attached.

      • +5

It's also a terrible deal for anyone looking to purchase a lamborghini. Or pasta sauce.

A NAS isn't going to handle multiple 4k transcodes while running your full home automation stack, a pihole, and the list goes on.

      • This + DAS.

      • It's not as if it doesn't have USB

      • +1

The hell are you talking about? External storage is fine for a local media server.

  • -2

    No USB Type-C port??

  • w/ additional M.2 NVMe slot

does it mention this on the listing?

I'm thinking of getting M.2 to SATA3 adapter like this. Will that work ?

    • +1

According to this video, the 512 ssd is a 2.5" with a spare single m.2.
What about sas to sata? Less wire to route out of the box. Still need to power the hdds though.

      • Thanks!! I think I'll get the sas to sata cable instead!

    • +1

Most likely. I put a similar motherboard with a SAS adapter into an old HP N40l Microserver chassis, replacing its motherboard.

It makes a great cheap, silent NAS.

      • +1

Got some guidance on how you did this?

Keen to do something like this with my old N40L if the mobo ever gives up.

        • +1

Slide out the HP motherboard tray and put in the M93. Mine was a simple "hack" job. Look on hackaday.io or Hardware Haven's Youtube channel for people who have done it properly.

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2HLF-46Das4

          • @RedHab: Thanks RedHab

Watched the Hardware Haven videos, and man… I don't think I'll ever find enough time to go through with a conversion like that! haha

    • I'm thinking of getting M.2 to SATA3 adapter like this(vi.aliexpress.com). Will that work ?

It will work for the data connection to each SATA drive.

But then you still need to get the power for the drives from somewhere.

      • Thinking of powering the whole thing out of unused ATX PSU that I have lying around.

        • +2

Mini PC plus drives plus cables plus ATX PSU will be a big spaghetti monster - why don't you just build an ITX or ATX system in a proper case designed to hold multiple hard drives ? Are there any positives from trying to do this with a mini PC ?

  • +1

Damm, quite a bit better than the Firebat deal I posted a month or so ago. At least that one has a spare gigabit NIC.
    …which I don't use.

  • +2

I would think twice before buying anything capable of sending data back to China from aliexpress. There's a good video on youtube of a guy Matt Brown hacking into some aliexpress gear showing a webcam that sends pictures back to a chinese server still available to purchase from there.

    • +1

Hence the recommendation to do a fresh install of the operating system.

      • +11

If the trojan is embedded in the firmware, a fresh install of the OS won't be effective.

        https://www.darkreading.com/threat-intelligence/millions-of-…

      • -1

As OzHan has said, OS is just one layer of your computer, it really means nothing, that's like saying you couldn't have your card details stolen from an eftpos machine with a dodgy card reader on top of it. You really have no idea what is going on with this device.

    • If there is no Trojan, there may be a bomb.

    • Which manufacturer doesn't have China in their supply chain?
What exactly do you think the Chinese are going to do to you, break down your door, hold you down while a AMA shill jabs you with an experimental serum?

I would be thinking twice about the quality of components and losing my config time… but I have something similar running my OPNsense, so obviously not a deep thinker ;)

      • +3

You should probably know that China is not an ally of ours, the whole reason these sites are dirt cheap is so they can get your data. It's incidentally that attitude that makes it easy for them.

        • +2

Not sure why you are down voted but yes that is clearly the case. Infact India have banned 100+ Chinese apps including PUBG, TIKTOK because they were stealing data.

          https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/sep/03/india-bans-118…

          • @Yogi555: Comes down to who you want stealing your data. Everything we do here is shared legally among the Five Eyes.

It's cherry picking if we only call out China.

            • @Clear: I agree that even google has all our data but wouldn't call that stealing.

There were some Chinese apps for example games which were meant to be games but were actually apps to spy and collect data.

If an app can do so much can't a mini PC do 😀

I am not against buying this or anything. Even I have bought one from this deal. But just letting others know so that most sensitive data won't be used with these items.

              • +1

@Yogi555: Fortunately with these you can wipe Windows completely and reinstall. Since it's Intel you can go a step further and make sure the BIOS/UEFI is clean.

So then the only real risk would be Windows dialing home to the US and your internet provider handing over data to the AU government.

  • Will this be a good work computer? I remotely connect to a machine at work for WFH

    • +5

      Yes, but also No.

I could bore you with things like BIOS updates, reliability/ quality differences, possible security/ interference concerns, lagging driver updates - all kinds of technical things, which don't matter for a Netflix box but do matter for a work computer, even if you're remoting in to your real computer in the office.

But the number one reason I recommend a laptop is that it has a built in power supply - I can sit on my laptop at home and keep working if there's a power outage, and we all know that there's at least a few every summer.

You should be able to buy a quality (Dell, HP, Lenovo) second hand 10th Gen i5/ 8GB RAM laptop for about three hundred dollars, if not right now then pretty soon. It's a work computer so you can claim it on your tax.

      • Do the technical things apply to all of the Chinese brand mini computers that have been popping up on Ozb lately?

I'm looking to change a bunch of desktops at a warehouse for work and the price, form factor and capability for the work they are used for are the reasons I'm looking at them.

I don't really want or need a portable computer, just one that doesn't take too much space

        • +1

The technical things all apply to all the Chinese brand computers.
It's all about risk. What's the impact to your business if a second-rate computer goes offline? How do you mitigate that?
Can the warehouse operate without electricity? Is there benefit in having your computers still run?

          • +1

@jcon: That applies to all computers. Not just "Chinese brands".

I wouldn't be using these in business though. Get big brand that have extended warranties and preferably onsite repair/replace.

          • @jcon: Fair enough. The risk of stealing info is scary though.

I guess I'm not that worried about the risk of the computers not having electricity or if there break as, if we didn't have electricity we'd have bigger problems and the computers arent used a whole lot.

  • Is this good enough for a plex server with Linux installed? Thanks

    • Yep, these things are great for plex and the embedded GPU can be enabled for hardware transcoding.

  • Decided to go with the G5 with a newer CPU and smaller form factor. It’s mostly a hobby machine to replace my raspberry pi - https://amzn.asia/d/24OROwp

They currently have $56 off as well so managed to get it down to $224

    • +2

But she said size doesn't matter…

Serious though, this 12.4cm vs G5's 7.2cm (longest sides) is a big difference.

But G5 seems to be only HDMI and no DisplayPort. Might be a deal breaker for some.

    • -1

The N97 isn't newer though? Both the N100 and N97 came out Q1'23.

      • Newer? No. Better? Yes.

        • -1

Okay, but I didn't say that. They said it's newer, which it isn't.

          • @ldd-mn: If we're being pedantic or can't work out what people mean by "newer".

  • Any good mini pc for video editing

    • +3

None of them tbh. Mini form factor is just not great for heat dissipation.

    • +3

      Mac mini M4 Pro.

      • Yeah but 10x the price.
You could still easily do video editing on a M4 Mac mini which is only 5x the price (rounding). Just take a little bit longer than the m4 pro. And “settle” for thunderbolt 4.

Unless you are really price strapped though, those Mac Minis are beasts in a tiny form factor.

  • +2

    I'll get an N100 someday… someday…

  • +1

I purchased 4 of these for my office and they work excellent. They are $300 after $70 discount

    https://www.amazon.com.au/GMKtec-16GB-1TB-Nucbox-G3/dp/B0D5C…

    • How's the fan noise with these? Are they noticeably noisy/whiny or quiet enough that you can forget they're there?

      • +1

Not noisey. You won’t hear that much as they are under the table and fixed to the wall. Lot of free space also.

    • Come with windows license? Thanks.

      • Yes. Everything is pre installed. Just plug and standard setup and use.

  • -7

Better than the new Mac Mini, at least according to some boneheads…
    /s

  • Soyo hungry or what!?
    🤣

    • -1

      Soyo want malware or not?

  • Anything at a similar price/spec with dual NICs?

  • Mine is running Proxmox since July and had no issues of down time.

  • 16GB DDR4 SODIMM RAM

    The OP says SODIMM RAM.

The spec of the product says it is LPDDR4 RAM, which says its not socketed,

      • LPDDR4 SODIMMs DO NOT EXIST!!!

        • Yes my bad. LPDDR4 is soldered. The RAM in this is not soldered. Source: The internal pictures from the listing reviews.

    • N100 is single channel and supports a maximum of 16GB, so whether it is socketed or not should not make a difference.

  • +3

Is this a good option for a Plex server? Any other recommendations? I have a NAS already.

    • I use my N100 to do transcoded streams on my Plex server and it runs fine. But depends on your use case.

  • +2

Is Firebat a better brand around same price?
    https://vi.aliexpress.com/item/1005006727722225.html?spm=a2g…

  • Could this run Power Automate Desktop as a machine I can just connect to my home router and run remotely. Or better to buy a cheap compact ex-office PC.

I do a lot of desktop autos but it always ties up a machine so would be nice to have a box that I can just remote onto. I would be running Chrome, Excel, Power Automate Desktop etc…

This is not home automation I'm talking about by the way…

  • How is this as a pc for home use for school kids from a performance perspective?

  • WARNING. If you DON'T care about your privacy and data breach, these cheap PC units are highly recommended. Cheap and reliable for 3-5 years.

    • +1

WARNING. If you DON'T care about your privacy and data breach, don't use any computers or the internet

      FTFY.

      • or any device connected to the interweb!

    • -1

Someone above said these devices may have viruses embedded in the firmware so reinstalling a fresh OS won’t fix that. So I guess these cheap devices puts you more at risk than from other reputable companies.

      • -1

With a link to Lenovo so I guess these "reputable companies" aren't so reputable. Just the usual scaremongering from the guys who hate anything China.

  • Caved and got one. Now to decide what to do with it

  • Mine arrived but the Wifi wouldn't connect. Turns out it doesn't support WPA3 security.

Windows 11 was showing a little white X symbol next to my SSID.

As soon as I turned it back to WPA2 in my router, it started working immediately.

FYI it looked like this - https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows11/comments/1dtxdis/what_doe…
