  • get on this deal - i own one of these, you wont find cheaper in near future

    • Could I turn this into a server like for steaming movies and storage?
      Thanks.

      • Yes, it'd be perfect for media streaming, anything 7th gen or later Intel has good hardware decoding.

        • Thanks for getting back so quick. How much storage can I fit on this like in the amount of drives?

        • transcoding*

          Decoding is for clients.

          • +1

@Riceplate: Transcoding does both encoding and decoding.
Needs to decode original stream and then encode into the desired format.

      • The answer is almost always yes. Definitely in this case. Depends on what you mean by “storage”. As this will have limited ways to attach storage to it.

        • Like can I fit in a couple of 3.5 drives or is it limited?

          Thanks.

          • @kranoath: Ah I suspect this chassis might be limited one 3.5”, but you’d either have to look it up or someone who owns it can chime it.

          • +2

@kranoath: designed for 1x3.5 HDD + nvme bootdrive + slim optical drive, which you can get an adapter for a second 2.5 HDD/SSD in that bay

has 3 sata ports but only has 2 sata power connectors, so can use power splitter and add an additional 2.5 HDD/SSD - no room for a second 3.5 without case modding jank.

plenty of USB ports for external HDDs though.

    • If you are going to do a project, probably worth splashing out $41 for the more powerful version of the all-in-one:

      https://ebay.com.au/itm/196312600848

    • Bottom one has no PSU.

    • +1

I grabbed the last POS terminal one, toocheap to pass up, sure I'll find a use for it lol

      • +1

Interactive Home Assistant control panel / dashboard was my first thought.

        • Oooh that is a pretty good idea, I grabbed one to try do retro games but I might test that idea out.

    • Has to be a pricing error. It weighs 9kg, yet it costs $5 with free postage. That simply cannot be profitable.

  • Any good for a batocera build?

    • Reckon that depends on which systems you're wanting to emulate

  • How customisable are these? Is it possible to replace the HDD with SSD and have HDD as secondary for storage?

    • +2

I bought one last year and reviewed it.

In short, the PSU might only provide one SATA power header, but in theory you can use a splitter if you want to go SATA SSD + HDD. There is a NVME slot so you can throw on a cheap PCIe 3.0 SSD.

  • +6

7070 with the 9500 is the real deal here.

    • I'm struggling to see any difference, but for $8, WTF.

      • 9500 is significantly better chip as I understand

        • +2

'significantly better' is an overstatement. It's about 8% better in single core.

          • @Riceplate: Which for the tiny price increase is significantly better

            • -1

@ldd-mn: Ha! 8% is a rounding error. Nobody is going to notice that in the real world. What will make a difference is replacing the HDD :)

    • Good shout, went with this option to replace an older Plex server.

Put a low profile 4060 in one of these.

    • I was wondering how that poor 200W PSU could handle 4060.

  • Is this any good for casual web browsing? Thinking of getting this for my mum.

    • +1

Perfect for casual web browsing. You would likely consider a SSD to make it feel snappy but would be OK-ish once everything has loaded if you don't.

    • +5

This is good enough for competitive web browsing.

    • +1

I would look at something like this:
      Acer Veriton

It has the SSD (Small but will be fine for general use however a lot snappier / quicker than HDD) it also has 16GB RAM so windows 11 runs better. Also finally it has more outputs for a display, HDMI, DP, VGA so as with the Dell sometimes they only have DP(Display Port) so a different lead / adapter is normally required.

It does have an slightly older processor.

Using the same code its $165

  • damn! misread the post and thought this was micro rather than SFF.

    • +1

What's the problem? SFF is much better than Micro because of PCIe expandability and very little difference in power consumption.

      • The size..?

        • I work in corporate, and we stopped using desktops after covid so they've just been sitting in the office collecting dust. I was appointed fill-in asset manager for a while, and one of my first jobs was to get rid of all the Dell Optiplex's and the Micro's. I asked my manager, "so when you say get rid of, you mean like dispose of them?". He said, anything, just get them out of the office. So now my garage is full of Optiplex's with 64gb ram, 1tb SSDs and i7s. I have like 5 Micro Optiplex's which I actually am utilising, one on every TV in the house for an easy media box. I honestly don't know what to do with the bigger ones, but the Micro are way more useful in terms of it's size, and being able to store them somewhere. There's also like 20 monitors that I could not be bothered taking, so I need to get rid of those eventually lol

          • @siemic: What's stopping you from selling them on ebay or gumtree? Plenty would be happy to pick them up for a good price.

          • @siemic: I can help you to get rid of them.. just send them to me.

          • @siemic: Check with your local schools, some of them might want desktops and monitors

            • @e4c5: Yeah I went to the school close by to our office and they rejected all the free devices lol. I even called up a nonprofit English learning school, but they rejected it also. To be fair, the location is close to CBD so these schools are probably loaded already. I probably could probably sell them, but I'm kinda worried if I would get caught out. In the past, they have been against staff taking multiple devices for that reason, so I assume they don't want us to pocket from these. We have a new-ish process of dropping off all devices at e-waste, but since I don't really care and nor does my manager, we wrote these off without chucking them there.

          • @siemic: best i can do is tree fiddy

  • +1

Anyone know how is noise on these compared to the USFF units?

  • Thanks. Was looking for a 7060 for a project but the 7070 was too good to pass up.

  • +6

Surely a pricing error at $179
    Lenovo ThinkCentre M90s Gen 3 SFF Intel i5 12500 3.0GHz 16GB RAM 512GB SSD Win 11
    https://www.catch.com.au/product/lenovo-thinkcentre-m90s-gen…

    • Seems good. Grabbed one.

    • Buy now, worry later.

    • damn good find. sold out now

      • It's almost certainly a pricing error. Big favourite to get refunded.

    • No longer available - did they cancel it?

      • They pulled it. Seems unlikely they'll honour it.

  • This is an excellent system and at an amazing price point. The 8th gen Intel processors are amazing in performance and bench-marking results two gens before and two gens after. I did get the the Dell Optiplex 7060 Core i7-87000 3.2GHz 8GB/1TB Windows 10 for a year and i bought it for $320 (cheapest i could find at the time) i upgraded to 64gb mem and put a 20TB HDD, also have 2 X 2'5" HDDs in it for extra storage and a 1tb m.2 in it. I run Unraid with about 40 containers (key call outs are Jellyfin and Frigate) 2 VMs Home assistant and ubuntu) fantastic system

    • Can you provide details as to how you've got all the storage set up? Are you using 2 splitters? Did it come with brackets for the 2.5" hdd or you sourced it elsewhere?

      1 x 1tb M.2
      1 x 20tb HDD
      2 x 2.5" HDD

  • Anyone using HAOS and frigate on one of these? My HASS in VM is super unstable so thinking of going full native

  • If I upgrade the RAM and stick a 4060 in, how well is this for gaming?

  • with Wifi ?

  • For people who has the experience

is it better to buy something like this instead of a NAS for video streaming and such? I guess for NAS you will probably get more HDs to add

    • Yes, these SFF PCs are far better value and it's not even close.
If you need more storage, you have plenty of options for adding it over USB. Some armchair experts will say that's a bad idea because you can't run raid/zfs over USB, but you don't actually need redundancy in a home environment.
Most consumer NAS are massively overpriced and come with a rubbish CPU that's no good for video streams. The 8500 and 9500 are both capable of HEVC 10bit decode.
