Reasonably Priced Decent Family Hotel in Sydney CBD

My partner and I visiting Sydney for 2 nights - weekend 07 & 08 December 2024. We are looking for a reasonable decent hotel i.e. not a backpacker for a room with attached bathroom for a two night stay.

I (wrongly!) assumed that with the number of hotels/B&B's in the city that the competition would mean good prices but no such luck! Can't quite believe how expensive the majority of the big chains are - well over $300 per night without breakfast and no cancellation.

Are there any active discount codes/offers floating at the moment?

Any other ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.
Tia

Goto booking.com find the hotel you like and within your budget, and check directly, sometimes cheaper. You are travelling to Syd CBD, not Broken Hill and the more you wait, the higher the prices will be. weekend 07 & 08 December 2024 - That is the peak time, you are not the only one who wants accommodation. Or stay somewhere further away and catch the train.

    Try https://www.theultimo.com.au/
It isn’t fancy, but is clean, well located near the light rail and Central and recently renovated.

    • Doesn't really fit the brief, $380 a night.

      • $259pn on their site.

        • If you do the dates he said with a fam of 4 like he said, goes to 380

My wife & I (seniors) generally stay at Great Southern in George St or Mercure in Railway square. We try and book direct rather than through a travel website.
These hotels are very close to public transport (rail, Light rail, Bus) and CBD
However we find the prices vary wildly depending on day of the week, the time of year, and the number of big events going on in Sydney at the time.

    • We often stay at the Great Southern because it is so close to Central Station.
Prices are reasonable and Breakfast is pretty good too.
      Specify non interconnecting room

assumed that with the amount of hotels/B&B's

Actually since airbnb basically turned into a service more expensive than tradition hotels with often absolutely insane terms and conditions and extra fees, many turned back to hotels….

Somehow hotels managed to win the war between hotels and airbnb…. By doing absolutely NOTHING.
Unlike taxis vs uber , or video shops vs Netflix etc

Unless it's a holiday house for multiply families, I'm choosing hotels at a similar price.

What an incredible fail on the part of AirBNB. Hard to think of a business that started with such promise that has generated so much ill will so broadly.

$300 is a good price for the CBD now, we aren't in 2019 any more. Plenty of people (not me) are happy to pay $500 or more

Cashrewards had a 10% cashback on booking.com recently

This is also the problem, plenty of people are happy to pay the $500 which means the hotels keep offering it. I'm probably still living in 2010, but I reckon $150 is a good price and $200 for a standard double room is a reasonable price. $250+ I'm only paying in extreme circumstances.

      • If you were a hotel and could fill up a room at $500 a night, why would you offer it for $200?

  • Family Hotel

    What does this mean?

    • One without Chinese tour bus parking 🤔

      One that isn't "guest friendly".

  • I'm told the Park Hyatt is quite nice.

  • attached bathroom

    Modern luxury 🤔

  • Forget CBD sub $300 booked this far out… fringe areas or roll the dice last minute.

  • Few weeks before christmas in Shitney CBD…. and you thought you'd get a bargain?

oh and if you have a rental car, if its like Parramatta many charge extra $25 a night to park your car there (Mecure and others)

Meriton can be ok price wise and bigger than a hotel room; Bondi junction or Green square Meriton are usually cheaper than the CBD options - Bondi is right next to the train so very easy to get to the CBD, green square is about 15 min walk to the station.

Otherwise try Darling Harbour eg Ibis; or a boutique hotel in Darlinghurst or Surry Hills etc. if you are near the train or light rail then it’s easy and quick to get into the CBD. Even Randwick - 25 min by light rail to town hall.

  • If you don't mind being out of the CBD…

The last time we went to Sydney we stayed at Coogee Beach. It was cheaper, a nice area with a great walk along the path to Bondi, and a very easy bus ride into the CBD.

  • A selection in Randwick https://www.sydneylodges.com/. Or search in Potts Point.

  • meriton suites are decently priced with a full kitchen if you like to have the option

I’d consider Macquarie park, Chatswood, north Sydney or mascot. Then just use public transport or uber.

  • CBD accommodation is tough going. Trains and light rail are good in Syd. I'd get a place fifteen minutes out. Tbh I'd actually prefer to. If you're not happy paying that much for accommodation, you won't be happy paying CBD eatery prices. CBD casual eats is a bit lacking compared to suburbs fifteen minutes out.
