  • Is this any good?

The book? Sure. It's actually quite good. It's not necessarily going to revolutionise your life, but as someone who went in extremely sceptical, I think it actually contains some useful advice and the author makes very good points about the human condition.

The only way to actually not give a f*gg is not wanting anything from anyone or the world in general - this book is a gimmick. It would be like telling a depressed person to cheer up, like it's that easy to 'not give a fugg' when you've identified yourself with almost everything that you've encountered and experienced.

Monks, etc, dedicate their whole life to not giving a fugg and here this guy is making it out of if it's some overnight thing

    • Have you read it?

        • The gist of it is that you probably worry about things you can't change or don't matter in the overall scheme of things. You probably see yourself as harmed by others but don't consider how responsible you are for your own choices and consequences.

The "not giving a f" is directed more to aspects of yourself and specifically the things you let define you, like a breakup that you can't let go of. It's not about not caring about other people or the world in general. It's essentially a kind of stoicism.

That said, I sped through the audiobook and there are some good points, but nothing profound for me. He does do a good job of explaining to your average person things that someone long ago, who they likely won't read, said. For example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0nz0iaNvVpE&t

          • @teajay74: That's what I mean, how do you actually do that though? If it was easy to not care, everyone would be doing it. People litirally devote their whole lives to being able to 'not give a fugg', it isn't something that happens after your mate tells you to 'cheer up' when you're depressed.

The irony here is that this is exactly what the book says. Basically the central idea of the book is not giving a (profanity) has to be an outlook on life you spend time and effort cultivating, and that it's not so easy in the modern world where we have so much to identify with and experience.

I'm not even going to make fun of your scepticism, before i read the book i thought exactly the same thing.

      • Yeah the book is actually pretty good. Tuck shop psychology that reminds you that you can't care about everything or you burn out, so you have to choose what to care about.

Probs nothing new you couldn’t get from his podcasts/channels and/or books.

Great way to never work a real job again though - write a best selling book and then talk about it for the next 10 years.

      And that’s a problem, why?

    • probably secretly an ozbargainer

Plus a $8.95 booking charge. Yeah nah

    • +1

      These booking charges are climbing

  • I don't give a (profanity) about the show

  • Grabbed it on audible

  • It was not mind-blowing, and also not terrible. Had not come across his stuff before, no regrets over checking out what it was all about.
