Might be cheaper if switched to USD?

    • +9

it is super cheaper if you do not buy it

      • +2

Damn, wishing I had of posted this deal instead :)

  • NordVPN is often available with 100% cashback and it is incredible value. Right now it is still cheaper to use TopCashback with 50% back and pay US$96.93 for 27 months which is US$1.80 per month.

    • +10

Proton is in a different league to nord. Depends on your vpn needs I guess

      • Could you elaborate on what you mean? They look almost identical https://restoreprivacy.com/vpn/comparison/nordvpn-vs-protonv…

        • +5

well if you're just using it to watched overseas TV or pop OSto buy something then Nord is your pick. If you actually want honest robust privacy, then Nord isn't for you.

The reason is because Nord had a security breach of one of their VPN servers in March 2018, but didn't admit it until it's hand was forced until October 2019……a security company hiding a security breach is not a trivial breach of trust.

But i don't use a VPN for privacy so I still use them.

        • +6

Proton is for privacy. Nord is not for privacy. If the product is free then you are the product and whatnot.

Also, the website you linked is owned/sponsored by Nord (or at the very least just trying to get you to use their referral link). You can find multiple websites with very similarly named articles praising Nord-owned VPNs while bashing others. The authors also all don't exist. Their profile pictures are AI generated and there's no information on them that doesn't link back to the same website.

          • @aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa: Fascinating about the AI-generated pictures. Makes me wonder how often this sort of thing happens, and it's getting easier to do.

Fwiw, Jim from Tech Advisor (who seems to exist as far as I can tell) reported in January that Nord have undergone another Deloitte audit and, apparently, passed with no issues. Having said that, the link to the actual audit gets a 404.

        • Proton is based in Switzerland (known for their privacy laws, don't cooperate with the 9 eyes surveilance countries) and actually have a verifiable no-logs policy, while most VPNs just say they do but are probably both logging and selling data about every website you visit.

All the major VPNs you usually hear about are good only for streaming. If you actually want privacy, ProtonVPN and Mullvad VPN are the only options.

      • does proton work better for streaming US Netflix etc. and for VPN subscription sign ups?

        • I have only compared to PIA for streaming where nearly all AU streaming subs were blocked. All sites I have work on Proton, with strange intermittent alert on iView which I reconnect and it works. It does split tunnelling if stricter policies from companies. List of servers and supported features is here: https://protonvpn.com/vpn-servers

      • I switched from PIA to ProtonVPN 6-months ago and have been very impressed. Zero-logging, 160 AU servers, multi-hop, lots of configurable options, very fast and stable. Most impressive feature is their 'stealth' protocol which was the only VPN I found that was able to bypass a locked-down hospital network. It's bespoke to Proton.

    Proton Mail Plus €23.88

    Any positive reviews?

    • -1

I think we've learnt that any service with Plus suffix soon ups their prices & serves up ads.

    • More positive than Neutrons

    • Absolutely, I've been a user of the whole suite for 2 years now.
In terms of privacy-based email providers, it's probably the best in terms of features, and Proton is a great non-profit company that's been around for quite a while.

  • This is just an IMAP mail service right?

    • +6

      Sure thing POP

  • +2

Proton is great is you pay for it, but a lot of features are locked behind paying.

    • It’s also because it’s non profit, has no ads, and based in Switzerland (expensive country)

      • Yep! The best email provider.

  • +1

    Mullvad

    • +1

      They don't support port forwarding

  • Why people prefer to pay for email service? Im really curious.

    • +10

Because when a product is free, you are the product…

      • And how will you know that you are still not a 'product' even if you paid?

        • +4

          Read their T&Cs

          • @jv: This is not a trivial task for most people

        • +3

There’s always a bit of a trust element. In this case, Proton is a non-profit organisation, they have open sourced a large portion of their code, and the emails are end to end encrypted (meaning only you can decode).

I trust them far more than any of the VC backed companies in Silicon Valley

          • @ozbking: They do log IP and hand over info though, which is disappointing.
            https://www.theregister.com/2021/09/07/protonmail_hands_user…

            • -1

@Flyerone: I'll bet your 'research' was only as deep as the headline or the first part of that article which is what most people do.

In the article it states Proton do not and cannot by Swiss law give any info to foreign governments, only the Swiss gov. when they have a warrant. So we Proton users in Australia do have privacy.

        • They've been security audited multiple times. Hard to fake that

      • You are always the product of some kind. Paying for a service gives you more control over the service — that's it.

    • End to end encryption, in theory. With MS copilot keylogging everything before it gets encrypted however I'm also curious as to the value.

      • +2

        Disable Copilot on your PC..

        • +1

Yep. I assume anyone smart enough to use Proton would know about that as well. :)

    • +1

Because some people prefer not to have AI algorithms scanning their personal emails to determine targeted ads.

  • If you want your data to remain your data and nobody else's Proton is is the most secure.

  • +2

Upgraded from Mail Plus at US$3.29 /month to Proton Unlimited (US$6.49/pm)

  • Reverts to normal pricing after 12 months.

    • My experience is that they maintain the discount. Tried that in the past with unlimited, and now currently visionary. Still paying $18 USD a month for 6 people, based on a Black Friday sale price.

      • Nice, fingers crossed then. :)

      • Scroll down and read the fine print.
        For family plan.
“*The specially discounted price of 41.88 € is valid for the first 12 months. Then it will automatically be renewed at the discounted price of 59.88 € for 12 months. You can cancel at any time.”

  • Years ago i bought my wife a domain (her name) for professional purposes (portfolio of work - important for her industry).

She only uses it for email these days - currently using google but they started charging (too much) for your own domain use about 12-18 months back

Is mail plus a good substitute?

    • Yes it's got good apps and web interface. One pain point was when I didn't get around to updating my payment, they locked down my account which meant they were bouncing incoming emails which meant I missed some critical emails. I'm not sure if they still do this or whether they downgrade you to a free plan.

I think everyone should use their own domain so that they can change service providers easily, the current environment has people locked in to whatever email provider owns their emails address. At least Gmail offers email forwarding which helps to gradually move to another provider. Proton doesn't offer this.

    • Zoho Mail's free tier allows using your own domain.

  • +1

Anyone able to take advantage of this deal if they currently have an unlimited subscription. Mines renews on the 8th of November, when I click through on this deal it just gets me to install pass for firefox and won't take me to any payment pages.

    • +1

Yeah same experience here. I was able to renew at the discounted price last year but it doesn't seem like I can this time.

    • Anyone brave enough to downgrade to mail plus then back to unlimited?

    • I was able to use to deal by downgrading from unlimited to mail plus, and then going through the link above.

Seems like you can only upgrade with the black friday deals, you can't stay at the same tier or get a deal for a lower tier than what you currently have.

      • Any idea on what would happen to my extra mail addresses etc? Guessing I would lose those.

        • I first tried downgrading to Pass Plus and I got an error saying I have more email adresses than what's allowed, so I dont think you can downgrade to Mail Plus if you have more than 10 email addresses (I had less than 10 so I didn't run into any issue with Mail Plus).

"Unlimited 12 months" seems totally limited to me!

Loath this practice of everything being on a subscription basis!
