Nice deal on that 7800X3D / 4070 Ti Super build

    • +17

Was about to buy it myself… but my mate found the Achilles' heel of this one.

Gigabyte B650M Gaming Plus WiFi motherboard has garbage VRMs that are not good enough for the 7950x3d meaning unlikely to be good enough for the 7800x3d either. The similarly named MSI one is fine though.

      Techspot/HardwareUnboxed did a writeup here: https://www.techspot.com/review/2861-amd-b650-motherboards-p… (just ctrl f "B650 VRM Temperatures")
      or video here: https://youtu.be/pUUVW7wgR3s?t=1405

@Luke, can we get a mobo upgrade option?

      • +2

Nice catch. I've been on the lookout for a new PC and found quite a few of the pre-built PCs skimping on parts (usually motherboard or PSU).

I appreciate the deals but my previous PC ran hot and loud and I'd prefer something with less trouble this time.

      • +1

Not sure but it looks like the B650m gaming wifi, and the b650m gaming plus wifi are different models. Also might still have same vrm issues?

      • +1

Also looks like a revised heatsink design on the vrms on the plus model..

      • I've heard this about the Gigabyte VRM also, what's the best option?

      • Thanks, was about to get the 4070ti super option but thermal looking not great.

@Luke can we get a swap option?

      • MSI PRO B650M-A WIFI would be the preffered option

      • +5

I recently purchased the previous tech fast deal with this 4070ti super and 7800x3d combo with the same motherboard (albeit with a 120mm AIO instead of the air cooler here) and ran some numbers if anyone is interested.

Maxed out at 82-83C on cinnebench, usually at around 65-75 on most games like cyberpunk and star citizen, hogwarts legacy went up to 80ish though surprisingly (all games in these cases maxed)

I don’t plan to upgrade the CPU for quite some time since I previously made do with a 3600 for half a decade so I’m not too fussed with these numbers and haven’t experienced any throttling, but for those wanting to upgrade quite soon, consider better cooling upgrades in this PC build as a solution.

Had issues with wifi disconnecting on previous MB but no issues so far with the wifi 6 on this, not a concern ofc if you have your own adaptor or use Ethernet

      • Thanks for sharing, I got the 2x 360mm AIO upgrades since Deepcool was not an option last deal and don't regret it so far coming from fans all my life except the possibility of having to replace it sooner, looks nice though.

Not sure if I read that article correctly, but I believe the Gigabyte B650M Gaming Wifi used in that benchmark image is not the same as the later model B650M Gaming Plus Wifi.

Do correct me if I'm wrong but the article might be a bit outdated as a mate's newer Gigabyte mobo model was also not listed, but the older version was in that comparison.

        • It's a different motherboard with a very different overall setup but the VRM setup appears the same, I wouldn't expect drastically different performance between the two. As long as you're not throttling on the CPU you want for the next 3-5 years this is still a value deal as you're getting $500+ off picking it yourself

        • Yeah from what I can tell, the "Plus" has more ram slots and an extra M2 slot… but the gigabyte site says both have "5+2+2 Phases Digital VRM Solution". Links in my post above if you want to take a look yourself.

      • +3

The 7800x3d is designed to be very power efficient and seems to rarely pull above 100W while gaming so I don’t think thermal throttling will be a large issue for gaming (which I assume is what people are buying this system for). Also correct me if I’m wrong but I believe those tests you mentioned were for the 7950X, not the 3D variant. These chips have a much higher TDP of 170W versus 120W for the 7800X3D (and looking at benchmarks and user reports, the 7800X3D seems to max out at around 80W in real use cases anyway).

EDIT: This review which looks at power consumption under all core load might be worth considering as well. The 7950x you mentioned they tested is rated at around triple the power consumption on this chart. I might be missing something and I am happy to be corrected but I think that unless you are doing hardcore CPU rendering, you won’t get significant throttling (even so, some reviews I read said that it still didn’t pull above 80W in such workloads), which again, isn’t really the main buying point of getting this chip anyway. I think the main argument you could make is that this makes the board less future proofable if you want to upgrade the CPU to something with a higher TDP further down the line, which is fair enough.

        https://youtu.be/B31PwSpClk8?si=3VgdObyqoHQGhhuU

Here are some anecdotes from users discussing this issue which might also be helpful. They share some of their real world thermals while gaming.
        https://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/will-poor-vrms-af…

        • +1

Just to add to this, I was curious and did some research. The 7950X is notorious for its heat generation, so you can see why they used it as the CPU for testing purposes.

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nRaJXZMOMPU

I think the 7800X3D will be more than fine with the provided motherboard.

          • +1

@Bohlin: Ty for the response! Disclaimer: I am definitely out of my depth here, and just aggregating as much info as I can from trusted sources.

That said, from my understanding, the stacked L3 cache (aka 3d cache) on x3d chips diminishes the heat dissipation which is why there can be thermal throttling issues even with lower TDP.

That GN review I believe they used a Asus Hero 670, which has 18+2+2 VRMs compared with the gigabyte gaming plus' 5+2+2.

Appreciate the other links, all great info!

I will likely do some cpu-intensive non-gaming, so I'm not 100% convinced yet, but it does make sense that it is probably fine for gaming at least.

            • +1

@purehybrid: I couldn’t find any documented issues with this pairing, and I think this motherboard is/was the cheapest option on the market at some stage in Australia, so you would assume that there would be some posts about it if there were issues. The general advice I found on forums was that it could handle any motherboard pairing as it is pretty efficient and doesn’t generate a lot of heat. When I looked up benchmark videos it was also rarely using more than 50% of its total resources in new titles as well.

That other commenter also posted their benchmarks with the pairing and they were getting expected results if that is any reassurance.

Basically, the tests shown in those sources were for a workstation CPU designed to hit 95 degrees with an hour long cinebench test, which isn’t the average workload that I think most buyers are going to need. I could be wrong though. I am happy to share benchmarks when I get the build and will let you know.

At the end of the day, this also implies that Techfast are not stress testing and benchmarking their systems, which they claim they do. I believe they have sold this system pairing before as well.

              • +2

@Bohlin: Yeah you've allayed my fears for the gaming side of things… so it's really just long renders or sims… but I guess in those cases I probably wouldn't notice the throttling anyway because it is generally just "done when it is done" and I run them overnight anyway half the time.

                • @purehybrid: I think an Intel build with the 14700 might be a better general purpose build if you are super concerned with that kind of workload. As far as I’m aware the new intel gen is pretty rubbish and has focused on efficiency so you aren’t missing out by buying now/soon.

                  • +1

@Bohlin: intel 14th gen is out of the question for me due to all the manufacturing issues, pretty set on the 7800x3d+4070ti combo atm, just being a bit too demanding for such a cheap deal I think :D

        • Thanks for responding to this. I've seen the Techspot article raised for several 7800X3D deals, which has deterred me from getting them, but you're the first to clarify it may not be directly applicable.

  • -1

My goodness, they getting cheaper & cheaper now, might even see a 4060 build for under $500 next month? Love to see a wifi MB finally included as standard, well done Luke !!!

    • +1

Absolutely - given that this is a Gigabyte board that goes for $179 all by itself this is a stonking good deal.

I feel like a bit of a rube honestly having just built a machine for $200 more than this.

    • +4

A 4060 build less than $500 means that the GPU would have to be around $300 and then the CPU/Mobo/Ram/PSU/Case etc $200. That's unlikely to ever happen.

  • Pulling the trigger on this ITX build missed out on the intel one, but still better then nothing

  • +2

ahh almost pulled on this itx until i saw the mb had only 1 M.2 slot instead of 2 on the Intel itx build

    • Intel was better a value deal and a better performing system made possible because the AMD chipset is more expensive.

  • 4080 super or 7900xtx?

Do you still have the option to ship individually boxed?

    • Can select GPU separate, but we aren't able to ship disassembled if that is what you mean.

  • +1

Any chance for regular 4070 Super and not TI?

    • +1

      Wish they have 4070s

  • +5

AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D | RTX 4070 Ti Super Gaming PC

Around $30 cheaper than the previous deal when upgrading RAM and PSU.

    • So not by much? Ahh the decisions to w8 or…… This timing is just too funny rn, with BF and then new cards dropping soon.

      • +3

I was tempted to wait for 50 series as well, but the benchmarks I looked at were good enough for me to pull the trigger on the 4070 ti super. It is a late gen cycle refresh card so it won't be as completely outmatched by the base 5070/5080 I think. Plus there are rumours that they are intending to skimp on VRAM with the 50 series. I contemplated this a fair bit and realised it is pointless to try and future proof a GPU. I think you need to get what is good value per frame for the resolution you want (e.g. the 4080 super works out to be like $500-600 more for only 10-15% better performance which wasn't worth it for me).

        • 4080 card will be dirt cheap next year, black Friday will see it in the $1300 range
but if ppl have waited this long I dont see why not wait 2 more months for a card that will be much better

          • @botchie: You might be right but I have given up on trying to guess pricing cycles for GPU post COVID hahaha. It doesn't help that AMD is not trying to compete now - I think they are pricing more aggressively now as a result

        • -1

Yea heard that 5080 might not beat 4090… F Ngreedy :))) Hope that 50 series is good enough that I can grab a cheap 40 series card LOL.

          • +2

            @StephenCurry: 5080 will be what 4080 was to 3080
i expect a solid improvement plus new tech plus dlss 4

one thing where nvidia cards can still pick up a lot is VR, i hope thats the case too

            • @botchie: DLSS 4 could possibly come to the RTX 40 series as well, with the precedent that DLSS 2 came from the RTX 30 series to the 20 series.
Honestly, I'm hoping Nvidia finally jumps to PCIe Gen 5 for their consumer GPUs. Even PCIe 5.0 x8 if they wanted to. At least we'd get the full bandwidth of PCIe 4x16.
Combine that with the coming 9950X3D and you have a sick dual-client cloud gaming setup, with each client getting 8 X3D cores, along with their own GPU and SSD.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/16qmq6d/will_a_am…
"5500 4060 and yes there is bottle neck"
What is the best CPU for value that does not bottle neck, that you have in stock?
Do we need to go ryzen 5900x?? What u suggest?

    • IMO shouldn't have any major issues with the 5500/4060 combo, should be fine for most games unless they're very CPU demanding.

    • +3

Will only bottleneck slightly at 1080 res. At 1440p the GPU will be at 100%

    • +1

5600 would be fine, I use it with my 3060ti(performs close to a 4060ti) and its perfectly fine. An am4 x3d cpu will be even better, but its half the price of the build and its a bit overkill for a 4060

  • +6

So tempted. Some great deals imo but I'm not big on the RGB and rather just prefer minimal aesthetics and silent operations. Any potential deals that have this?

    • +2

You dont have to turn the RGB on. Id say that case in pretty minimalist.

      • +1

I was thinking more of the case options for 7800X3D builds. If only I could pair it with cases such as those from Fractal for example, or even Lian Li Dan A3 etc etc.

Do agree that the itx case is pretty minimalistic though.

        • +1

Agreed. I'm not planning on upgrading until tax time next year, but if deals like this dropped with a nice Fractal case I'd fold.

          • +5

@Willowtip: God if there was a Fractal North or Fractal Terra on a deal like this, count me in.

            • @Herk: Yes, they look great, discrete and can be at the home without all the neon, RGB colours bleeding light everywhere…..

  • Hi there, will there by any offerings of different cpus like the 7950x3d and 9950x or are these builds limited to the 7800x3d?

  • +4

Crazy that a deal with lots of upvotes for a 4060 is $400 and for an extra $278 you can get a whole pc with it

    • +2

      of coz w/o Windows …

      • +10

        No windows is something alright…
You definitely just need to make sure you stay away from anything called MAS. That is all bad news and needs to be buried - maybe in some sort of MassGrave.

        • +3

          Definitely don't look it up.

      • +1

Even if you wanted to actually pay full price for Windows, $278 is still kinda nuts for the rest of the computer…

  • I know that I'm in the minority, but is it possible to add on a 10 GbE network card to the builds?

    • Not at this stage. We don't offer Network cards at this time.

  • Can you bring back this deal: Intel Core i5-12400F | RTX 4060 ITX Gaming PC for $688?

    • +2

Out of stock on that sorry

        • +31

Sometimes please and thank you goes a long way

      • +1

when do you think i5 deal will come back?

  • Thanks Luke. That 4070TI S is an unbelievable deal. Can't wait for mine to arrive!

  • +1

missed out on the 12400f 4060,just pull the triggler on the 5500 too

    • Same!

    • same, transaction verification completed, lol

  • +2

Hey Luke, any news on having a MSI steam voucher promo offer coming soon?

It would be nice to get at least the small gift card.

    Cheers

  • Thanks Luke, the 4070 TI Super and 7800X3D deal was exactly what I was hoping you'd bring back, and I've just placed an order. Great value there after upgrading RAM and PSU - really looking forward to it

    • May I know what PSU do you choose?

      • I opted to go $50 more to get the gold rated PSU. Same 750W as far as I'm aware. The base build comes with a bronze rated PSU. I believe they have a variety of brands and it's a bit of a lucky dip as to the one you get

  • When upgrading the spec in memory, can I make another 5200 MHz 16GB RAM (16+16) for Dual Channel instead of directly switch to 6000MHz 32G RAM for $99? Furthermore, I think add one more 5200MHz 16GB DDR would be cheaper than $99.

Also there might be a mistake or just missing word when placing the order for SSD area:
Should be 1TB NVMe Gen4 m.2 SSD (HP, Kingston, Crucial in use)
There is "Gen4" in 2TB but no "Gen4" wording for default 1TB SSD.

    • The 32gb upgrade was cheaper in the previous deal…. Interesting…

    • Mine from previous deal is Cruicial Gen 3, so the wording is likely correct.

Other PC got the 2tb upgrade, which is Gen 4.

  • transaction verification completed

  • +1

    Not registered for GST?

  • Any place you'd recommend to get your Win11?

  • Am I crazy or are Victorian address not suggested for the auto-fill? How required is it that we use that as it does say (please use Autofill feature)*?

    • Victorian address works for me

      • Weird just started working for me ¯_(ツ)_/¯

  • +2

Are these the blackfidat deals? or we hold???

    • +3

This is the million $ question!!

    • hoooooollllllllllllllllldd!

      • I'm trusting you Stumps. Don't let me down :(

      • Im still recovering from Primeday, I got stung on teh Q Revo ! However 2 weeks of not picking up the mop has been a blessing! But im treading with caution now lol

  • RX7900 deal has RTX4080 in the description…

    • Fixed thanks

      • -8

Hi Luke, My uncle who is on the pension would like to get the 5500+4060, is there an extra special discount? cheers

  • can anyone from past deals comment on the case for the $688 deal? Does it have dust filters on it?

    Had a look here - https://forums.overclockers.com.au/threads/itx-gaming-pc-tec… - but couldnt be sure…

    • +1

      No dust filters built in

      • ah bugger, thats a shame. I attract dust like Pig Pen from the Peanuts comic

Almost worth buying it regardless and putting it in a proper case.

  • +1

    AMD Ryzen 5 5500 link isn't working..

  • Crazy x3d/TiS deal compared with the recent steam gift ones!

    A couple questions for Luke:
    1) What sort of SSD's are these? I'm assuming it's super basic 3600/3000 speed ones since there's nothing to specify?
    2) Any chance of a 4tb SSD option?

  • +1

Looking at getting a 7800x3d/4090 would you be able to allow me to upgrade from one of the deals (also potentially a higher wattage psu)

  • Tempted to order the 7800X3D/4070 deal and sell the GPU. Any idea what the GPU sells for? 1000-1200? Means I'd be paying 700-900 for everything else and I already have a 3080 sitting around, just want to upgrade out of the 11700k I have

    • Cheapest RTX4070ti super is $1199..
so maybe between $800 and $1000 secondhand given the warranty is pretty much non transferable with Techfast.. esepcially if you are removing a video card.

  • Hi techfast, do you have the pc parts picker comparison for the 4070 and 4080 deals?
Would there be any issues if I installed my own 360mm aio cooler, additional SSDs and additional fans?
    thanks

  • I'm just waiting for the 5090 at this point so I know how many body parts I need to sell :p

  • +1

Great price. I paid the same as that 7800x3d+4080s to build my own with a 7600&4070tiS.

Obviously apples to oranges and im a bit of a looks guy and I also didnt shop for the best deal (went to my local MSI for the bulk of the stuff just because I didnt want to wait for interstate shipping). Nevertheless, you arent getting close to that price to perf even if you arent going for aethetics.

  • +1

copped the 4070 Ti Super 7800x3d combo with a ram upgrade. Great deal, cheaper than pc partpicker prices by about $450-500
