Chery Tiggo 4 Pro Urban from $23990 Driveaway @ Chery Motor

1563

One of the cheapest brand new small SUVs available with good features for the price. Competes with the MG ZST Core discounted at the same price but has much better power (108kW) compared to the extremely weak 84kW from the MG while having the same advertised fuel economy. The interior is also much nicer with a more modern design.

Interesting to see the word "Pro", used in electronics like phones and tablets, being used by the Chinese in car names.

@easternculture: so like any other suburb in syd.

                          got it

                          • @tonyjzx: I think the median in sydney is about $1.3M. Not many innerwest suburbs towards canturbury bankstown have had houses sell for $3M+

                        • @easternculture: Untrue.

Greenacre suburb profile for freestanding houses:

@neofelis: I bet your other cars are cruise and captivas.

        • +7

Are you guys negging eachother at 1 neg each?

          • @pixpotato: Yeah funny thing is they probably couldn't even afford a tiggo 4 at the $20,000.

If they were shit cars I'd be here saying so. But unfortunately it's not true… I'm honest and I've been nothing but honest.

And look I firmly believe if you are going to go the Chinese route of cars go top of the line! The tiggo 8 some people have had transmission problems but nothing in the 7. The 4 only hit dealerships this week so we dont know.

            • @neofelis: this is just my opinion but $50k for a full sized 4wd SUV is 'normal' now

if a $40k only buys you a base Outlander fwd then $10k to get all the features in a Tiggo 8 stands to reason

              but $60k for goddamn KIA!

man… really??? and its only a top of the line SPORTAGE? driveaway its $65k so you can drive a KIA???

              ooof

              • @tonyjzx: Try the ev9 at $115,000. Kia is trying to be Mercedes. Soon I think under 90k you won't get a Kia. This is hard facts. My wife wanted the Palisade calligraphy and we're lucky we didn't as there are reports of failed engines and lengthy wait times for them of up to 9 months wait and mechanics are coming out the woodworks saying they're somehow lemons again.
                Pallisade runs the carnival engine.

I think last week Kia recalled 300,000 cars

            • @neofelis: We know - the Tiggo 4 Pro Max Ultra Urban with Retina 360 view, 108 kW neural ICE has 7-yrs warranty. Good to go ;)

@Wizard: Well look, they might all wind up like Huawei selling technology 5 years ahead of apple and the government could ban them all. But we have had companies like Haval for 3+ years now and it looks like every 2nd car on the road is a jolion lol
But last week Hyundai and Kia was caught selling voice data from cars to 3rd party AI companies.
Haval requires you to login to an app on your phone to drive the car! That's concerning but Toyota does similar and monitors your driving techniques and bases your cars value on your driving history recorded by the app.

We know America is putting some crazy tax on them over there for Elon.

On the flip side Chery just released the most advanced car in the world (so they claim) https://carnewschina.com/tag/chery-exeed-e08/

We do know manufacturing in China is no longer cheap as the world best engineers live there now.
The manufacturers who want cheap have moved to Vietnam, Thailand Mexico etc.

Man you have to start reading carsguide and motor expert etc all the manufacturers are corrupt but so many are taking Australians for a ride.. $60,000 for Mazda which they havent innovated for 7 years!!!!!!

They're saying it's game over for Mitsubishi, Honda (they were already going to pull out of Australia years ago) Mazda, Toyota, Kia, Hyundai. The car market won't be the same in 2 years time. VW said they want to pull out of Australia but they haven't made a good car in about 20 years, plagued with DPF issues along with Toyota.

Toyota axed all their V8s and all you can get is Hybrid which can't go above 40km/h. Honda is very conservative and no value for money and the 1.5L engine has problems which they use across all models now. Mitsubishi is sucking consumers into 10 year limited warranties which cover nothing and offering them 6 year old technology. It's all too easy for china..

Funny thing is china has been here for the past 4 years… It's not new.

              • +3

@Wizard: You need to remember how Kia started back in 2016 with the Cerato. The first car to offer Apple car play and android auto $16,990 drive away.

The Chinese manufacturers are simply stealing the business model from Korea and doing the same - offering features and technology at unbeatable prices.

Look at Kia now.. Selling $115,000 cars and car of the year award and world car of the year award.

In 5 years time you'll remember this. Then you'll say what I'm saying.. remember that tiggo 4 at $24,000? Meanwhile the Tiggo 20 will be $150,000

              • @Wizard: Lol, Mate. Look around and have a think.

              • @Wizard: I'm not hypocrite. I avoid any non-community (ist) friendly cars ;)

    • +4

You need to remember - your Honda CRV or Toyota Kluger is made for about $8,000 - $13,000

This maybe the case. However, you need to factor in R&D, factory running costs, utilities, insurance, WHS, wages, million dollar bonuses to company executives and 2025 porche cars as xmas gifts to company board members

      • +1

Yes however there are taxes in Australia too. It's why VW, Kia and Toyota have all said in the media they're very worried about these Chinese companies.

This is why they all fled manufacturing in Australia for crazy profits!!

Car experts have warned owners to sell now because in 1- 2 years you won't get half the money you will now for your Toyota and other cars as you will today.

        • +4

          Which experts?

So sell now, wait 2 years and buy again. What do the do in the mean time? Take the free bus from Bankstown ?

          • +2

@easternculture: No they think Toyota will need to change its strategy and try to find ways of making cars even cheaper to compete.

Toyota said in a news bulletin that they would move to Mexico at one point to try avoid some tarrif and obtain cheaper labour. They actually do have a manufacturing plant in Mexico.. this week seems it's a different line.

There are 12 new companies coming in from china. Xping, GAC, Aion, Jaecoo (Chery), Polestar, Zeekr, Jetour(Chery) Skytour and a bunch of others.

          • @easternculture: Further to this on Saturdays on 3AW there is a car expert who worked for Hyundai, Subaru and a bunch of other companies as an engineer and setting up manufacturing facilities for these companies overseas. He knows the ins and outs and the good from the bad and he knows the production lines - which are good and which are bad. He lived and worked in Japan for years!

He's the one who said sell up now and I'd put money on his judgement. He also said 60k mark go the Hyundai Tucson he said it's a very good car for the money. It's a 1.6t engine with DCT transmission AWD at $62,000. Wait… Same spec as the Chery tiggo 7 at $41,000…

He also said Subaru is over in Australia. Boomed in early 2000s with the STi but became too conservative and not offering enough for the money. They toned things down from the rally days and it doesn't resonate here.

            • +1

@neofelis: Hyundai DCT's have the same issues as VW DSG's etc.. so not sure thats great advice.

The Subaru comment is spot on though. NVES will likely finish them off. Shame, i loved my 2001 WRX

              • @Matt P: 2006 Subaru Impreza was not a bad drive either I had one of those.

We had some tiguans. Never again! Nothing but problems with the dpf flooding the turbo and intercooler - very expensive to fix!!

    • Speaking of experts…..

Haven't you noticed, just about everybody on OzB is an expert on cars, because they have one.

And those that don't - because they are too young to drive, or too poor to afford one - quite often have even more expertise.

  • Do you mean tigger ?

    • +2

      It's a 1.5 litre engine, 108kw sounds reasonable. Audi Q2 has 110kw, BMW X1 has 115kw.

      • -4

Q2 and X1 don't qualify as actual cars, come on. They are mere brand dilution intended to appeal to individuals that would pay whatever they can stretch to afford just so that they can have the badge, even if the vehicle is junk.

115kw is reasonable enough, if it's in a go kart. Even an Elise has more than 150kw.

      • +1

        Golf has 110kw.

The only golf that comes anywhere close to being a vehicle that anybody should even begin to think about buying has 235kw.

    • 300kW minimum?? 😂

    • So you can't drive then, got it.

  • This or swift hybrid?

  • Keen to get opinions on whether the ultimate spec features are worth it for the extra 3k

    18" Alloy Wheels
    Red Brake Calipers
    360° Around View Monitor
    Heated Front Seats
    6 Speaker Sony™ Sound System
    Power Folding Outside Mirrors
    Power Sunroof with sunshade

Tbh I don't even understand what "Power Folding Outside Mirrors", electric mirrors that fold really fast?

    • 360 camera and electric mirrors (standard model dont automatically close, you have to manually push it yourself) are definitely worth it. But 3K is a bit much.

    • +1

I think 360 degree cameras are really useful, they are high-definition cameras generally found in more expensive cars. Boxy square makes the car roomy from the inside and the back seats are comfortable for the size of the car. The fit and finish is quite good as well. Went to the dealership yesterday to check it out.

  • They fold inwards while you are parked. That's useful. The 360' monitor too. The rest, for me, nah.

  • Assume sold by Temu, no discount code?

  • South Africa and Malaysia have been the early adopters on Chery SUV's:

    South Africa

2023 Tiggo 4 Pro rear axel ripped off while driving. The car flipped 8 times. Thankfully everyone was okay. If you have this car please have it checked.

    Malaysia

…a grey Omoda C5 stranded on the roadside with its rear trailing arm snapped in half and the rear portion of the body mounted atop the rear axle and wheels…

…during a facility upgrade, a worn-out tip on the automated welding machine was swapped out for a new one. However, this seemingly routine change led to a critical miscalibration of the equipment…

Two new and completely different models, delivered to two different countries, both with the same issue of rear axles shearing off while the car was in motion

For a family SUV, the last things you want are fundamental QC issues with the suspension

    • Check how many Tesla, Merc, BMW, Ford…cars had fatal outcomes with similar cases. Stats are not understood by politicians or salesman ;)

      Russia

…a Chery Tiggo 4 Pro disintegrated while in motion, losing an axle and scraping its undercarriage along the asphalt.

Kia Sportage GT line panoramic sunroof cracks (common problem) and someones main wiring harness was faulty and Kia tried to charge the owners $43,000 and said a rat climbed in chewed it shorting out some wires. 28 hour labour charge lol

No car is made the same since covid. People are saying BMW has electrical faults.

We have warranties for a reason.. it's when things turn expensive do they not play ball. Someone's MG charging port failed and MG told him where to go.. $30,000 fix.

Meanwhile my mates 2024 $100,000 ford raptor brake controller failed in 48 hours and was without his ride for 2 weeks.

Doesnt make sense as under consumer law, he would be entitled to a brand new replacement since it failed pretty much right away

          • @easternculture: Read what consumer law is.. it's a recommendation and consumer affairs have no jurisdiction to uphold the rights for you. Even if the engine blew up or transmission failed no one is giving you a new car. They would offer to buy it back under good will but it will be substantially lower.. maybe $14,000 for a brand new tiggo 4. Otherwise they'll replace it under warranty if it's not misuse.

Hahah not even insurance would give you a new car these days! A car has to be 70% damaged in order to be written off with most major insurers.

If a part fails you're simply without the car. Most dealerships won't even pay for the tow truck to the dealership. You won't even get a hire car.
Look at all the Kias which get sent back to dealerships daily. Those people are simply without cars.
GWM tank 300 owners wake up each morning wondering if there cars will even start!!!

You simply have to wait for parts. That can be up to 9 months.
Even with insurance there are no laws which say your car has to be remedied in X amount of time. It says 'reasonable timeframe'. Well throughout covid there were no parts and people had to wait 12+ months.

You've never purchased a new car have you?
If you want 'consumer laws' they're upheld in VCAT or small claims tribunal. You better have never had anyone touch the car though or your warranty is gone.

            • @neofelis:

Mitsubishi Motors Australia chief executive Shaun Westcott has predicted a turbulent period for the Australian automotive market.

More than a dozen new brands including BYD, Chery and Zeekr have set their sights on Australia.

“We’re going to go into a period of excess supply, and not everybody will survive that, and there’s going to be a bit of a bloodbath,” he said.

The market correction is already underway, as automakers deal with oversupply and decreasing prices.

“So we’re going to see a lot of discounting happening, seeing an excess supply of cars in the short term."

Mitsubishi should go bust.. if they think their Triton is worth 80k they're dreaming. Even the outlander brakes only last 50k compared to 100k on a Honda. The warranty is non existent too.

    Stop crying Mitsubishi, do better.

    • Mitzy and Nissan will have to exit our market. :)

  • Everything has been said but no one mentioned low nits? ;)

    Good points

    Eye-opening value for money
    Respectably styled
    Impressively packaged
    Decent performance
    Perversely amusing handling

    Needs work

Tonnes of body roll in corners
    Finger-light steering has no feel
    Mediocre tyre grip
    Numb chassis feedback
ADAS systems yet to be tested

The base Tiggo 4’s 215/60R17s don’t have a whole lot of grip and there’s an eyebrow-raising level of body roll … which is somehow rather charming, especially if you love old French cars.

Its steering is fairly accurate, though without any discernible weighting or load-up as cornering forces rise. It’s almost amusingly immune to any impact from what’s going on at road level, which may prove potentially disconcerting in the real world.

Drove one today and when I mentioned the light feel of the steering the sales Dood went into the cars menu and adjusted it to make it harder. :)

      • Then how was it?

      • Did it make much of a difference after that? I'm curious as I only realised after my test drive that there was such a setting.

  • How would the fuel efficiency and maintenance of this car be?
