    • don't buy a new one until you have 1bit left.

wish i had jb hifi where i live right now

  • How on earth did you wangle this? Is it the older rounded corner one?
    Checked their site $148
    http://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers/storage/seagate/expansion…

    • It is the same as this one on eBay.. http://tinyurl.com/bb4y86k. Oh yeah so that $148 one on their site. Same model number.

So I think not the older one.. You mean the one with the weird slanted front? Is has no slant.

  • Did they only agree to that price because you were buying two? As in if I went to parramatta jb hifi would I be able to get just one for that price?

    • +2

He gave me the $125 price before he knew I was going to buy two. I was initially wanting two of the 2TB ones at $89 to match BIGW (even though Seagate), but my mother ended up buying the last two for $89 each. So he offered the 3TB for $125.

(BTW - also got the WDTV Live Streaming for $98)

  • gonna hit OW tomorrow and see if they price match this

  • Anyone got Office Works to match this + 5% off

    • +1

      don't bother wasting your time

      • -1

Why dont you think they would?
I bet they will. Guess I can prove that tomorrow

      • +1

Well it wasn't a waste of my time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My OW price beat it and I paid $118.75 :P

      • That's a familiar avatar, from PR. But generic I suppose …

word of advice, if anyone is trying to buy this to hook it up to their tv or wdtv its not going to work, 3tb drives are not recognised on neither smart tv's or wdtv players. max compatibility is 2tb

    • +1

As far as the WDTV units are concerned, this is only true for the older WDTV players. From the WDTV Live onwards (provided you've updated the firmware) the units do recognise 3TB drives.

      • ive read on the fourms that even the latest firmware dosent do the job.

        • +2

I'll test it out tonight after I've finished doing this overtime for work… will let you guys know if 3TB is recognised.

    • +1

Thanks for the heads up, was gonna get one for the tv!

    • +1

This drive works on the WDTV Live Streaming but it does not work on my smart TV.

    • +7

Just tested the new 3TB on the new WDTV Live Streaming (with latest firmware) and it is working fine. I can confirm this works for me..

      • just a thought on updating to latest firmware, i've read somewhere on a fourm previously that if you update to latest firmware you will get Cinavia protection with some downloaded movies, have you yet to experience a Cinavia protection problem with latest firmware?

        • I haven't had an issue.. but I haven't been using it for long either..

  • +1

Can you run something like CrystalDiskInfo and tell us what model drive is inside?

    • Uh.. downloaded CrystalDiskInfo and have NO IDEA where to find the info..

      • I'm making an assumption that CrystalDiskInfo has found the external drive, but it should be one of your drives listed across the top of the window in separate boxes where it shows something like good, temperature and drive letter in each.
Just click one of those boxes till you find your external drive.
The main info for each drive is listed below this and the drive model is in big bold letters.
Should be something similar to ST3000DM001 3000.5 GB shown there.

        • +4

Okay so it says this: ST3000DM001-1CH166 3000.5 GB

        • Thanks

        • What does it tell you? For us uninitiated.

  • I am sure this has been done to death in other 3tb threads but I don't think I ever worked out whether or not the firmware in these drives is bad for desktop use? They are 7200rpm drives that are the same as the desktop drives sold at msy etc aren't they?

    • Pretty sure the ST3000DM001 drives used in the externals are exactly the same as those sold as bare internal drives.
I've never heard of them using different firmware for the drives for use in external enclosures.

  • Google revealed this;

    Note the model number ST3000DM001

    Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

  • i'm going to pick one of these up tomorrow, merry christmas to myself, i'm welcome. Thanks OP :) dick smith and ow both have this drive for $149 fyi

  • Bought one yesterday at JB Hi-fi Blacktown, $79 for the 2TB

    • That's an incredible price. Mind uploading a receipt before I go to my nearest store?

      • -1

Hi Henray. I wouldn't mind at all. However I'm a newbie here, I still don't know and apparently cannot submit anything here just yet. I also bought the new iMac Rrp $1429 for $1270 yesterday from same store.

  • i read somewhere that this is not compatible with mac? or is it just not compatible out of the box?; meaning I just have to format it as exfat in the disk utility and it should work like normal. except i dont have the seagate software?

    • +1

You don't need the seagate software. It should work just fine after formatting it.

  • +1

Bought one from the same store. No need for receive, just ask for 125. Thanks op.
Btw also got Assassins Creed 3 for 49.

  • +1

Why WD never have good sale prices?

79 for the 2tb USB is a bargain

    • Sorry. Am I missing something here? $79 for 2 TB Seagate desktop expansion or portable (i.e. USB powered) expansion are u guys talking about?

      • expansion desktop external

        2tb usb3 for $79

  • My two local Officeworks are doing the Seagate expansion 2TB for $79. Not a fan a of the slanted front model though, terrible reliability reviews.

  • JB Parramatta (near Church St) had the Buffalo 3tb drives for $149 today too - marked price…

  • +1

Just got it from jb at town hal. They didn't want to match the price, saying things like it was the special for yesterday or it was because of the customer bought two. But I got it at the end.

  • Can you buy 2 of these and whack them in a NAS?

  • +1

Just got one from JB Carindale for $125. I just said others JB sale it for $125, may be if I said $120 they will let it go too.

  • +1

Got it at JB in Greensborough for 1 drive, no problems. Initially offered $141, but after saying someone else got it for $125 said okay straight away. Should of tried lower :P

  • +1

    Same price @chadstone

  • Will wait for the https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/85502 to come round again. Use it for main entertainment storage and use the present two 2TB HDD's for backup, halve the possibilities of losing the lot.

  • +2

Just picked one up at the local BigW @$125, just showed the receipt and advice the sales person DSE/JB's price and they matched it for me.

  • +5

Officeworks Wodonga refused to pricematch so I drove upto Albury JB and they did it no questions asked. Receipt attached for those that want it : http://i.imgur.com/swUpW.jpg

    • +1

Please report the store that refused you to Officeworks head office. These fools should lose their jobs.

    • +2

Just picked up one today. Thanks for posting the receipt!

  • can someone please post a receipt for a victoria store eg: chadstone or melbourne cbd?

  • +2

thanks OP, i was able to get the same drive for same price without much fuss at the same location. =)

  • +2

Thanks for this deal. Got refused at Elizabeth Officeworks in SA but JB Hifi price matched for me. Pulled the hdd out and am using it in my computer. South Australian receipt attached. SA Receipt

  • My wife took the receipt to JBHF at Miranda Westfields last night thinking that they appeared so busy that she would probably be there forever and looks like she must have asked a manager because he looked at the receipt, said he thought there was one out back, came back with it and then charged her $120 not the $125 we expected. It must be Christmas after all. Looking at the unit I can't see how I can crack open the case without putting a hammer to it. The enclosures are made so well it looks like a tight fitting glove with no visible signs of joins. I would love to get another at that price as an internal drive which would be cheaper than $139 at MSY.

  • Tried UNsuccesfully JB Hifi Blacktown NSW tonight. The sales guy initially agreed to sell for $125, but then his supervisor came and he rejected saying that the receipt could be part of the deal by buying more expensive products.. what a BS!

  • Yep parra Westfield wouldn't match it either even the poster receipt is from their store.. What a joke lol

    • are you serious? they matched the OP's receipt no problems. I can post you my receipt if it helps?

  • Here's a more recent receipt for those still trying to get the deal http://i.imgur.com/uRUcz.jpg
I went to merrylands jb hifi because I received a message that if I turned up I would get a free $20 stockland gift card, so with that and paywave cashback brought it down close to $100! If you are having any trouble with a store, it worked for me to say that I had spoken to a guy who I didn't know the name of on the phone earlier in the day who had agreed to price match. When I offered to show the receipts posted by earlier ozbargainers the guy just said that he believed me and put through the sale.

  • Success at Bundall (125)…took some convincing and got the stink eye after regretfully agreeing to price match OP receipt

  • Anyone in Perth happen to get this?

  • +1

Went to jb warrigal road, told the lady I got this receipt from a friend, showed her on my phone, she said where did u get that, we don't match price unless its real receipt… But she would do it for me this time. Ended up buying 2 and she kept saying she wouldn't usually match an they get in trouble for it. When I asked her if I can come back to get more from anyone else, she just went blank and 30secs later said NO ONLY FROM ME! Looked abit upset. My god I'm paying u money what is the problem?? Even wrote on my receipt Do not price match… Fail.

    • haha its like you are taking money from her own pocket.

  • Did anyone end up testing whether this drive is detected on a Smart TV?

  • thanks mate got 2 of these from officeworks for $118 each

price matched just showing the title of this deal on the phone
    Penrtih

  • Just FYI on these disks for those wanting to use the HDD internally:

My intention was to use this drive as follows; 2.75TB partition of free space and 250GB for the C:/ for Window and programs…

    • You are unable to use all 3TB as a bootable disk (that is, to launch an OS like Windows 7)

You are only able to use all 3TB (or thereabouts) when using the drive as a typical additional internal/external disc for your own personal files.. You would need to convert the disk into a bootable version which automatically creates 2 partitions on your drive
    -Part 1: 2047.90 GB
    -Part 2: 746.52 GB

The Windows 7 installer (or any for that matter), will not let you install an OS onto the smaller partition at all, even if you format it. Once you install the OS onto the 2TB sized partition, the other 746GB remains unallocated and unusable - you cannot create a useable volume to store data onto. I found this out the hard way

Google the model of the HDD as indicated above; techies will describe the details in more detail.

Bottom line? Seagate are a bunch of pr|cks…

  • Hmm I go to that link and it says $148, For those that have pulled apart to use internally are they sata drive?

  • Hi guys,

I just went to havery norman Bondi to get them to match this but they had no stock but did the seagate backup plus 3TB STCA3000/300 for $100 pm me if you want a copy of the receipt.

hopefully it has the baracuda 7200 inside like ths one

He price matched the JB receipt.

****** SORRY WRONG THREAD I MEANT TO POST THAT HERE http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/89417?page=1#comment-118447…

  • wow talk about hard work. I went to JBHiFi where the staff / supervisor claimed that this receipt was 'OBVIOUSLY' a forgery and looked to 'neat' to be the real thing.

He had obviously received a company memo / warning and wanted to know where I got the receipt lol.

Headed off to officeworks and they said they could DEFINITELY price match it if I could show them the better price online OR supply a receipt that is within 48 hour time frame (ie: recent).

    :(

If anyone has a recent receipt would appreciated it
