  • Good dock! works very well with multi display setups

    • Does it pass through displayport over USB-C?

  • +1

Have been using this dock for a while, highly recommend if you're running 3+ monitors!

  • +5

2 docks in our house, they're good except for the random full speed fan issue. I've taken the fan out of 1 of them, and problem solved - although you might have a problem in a warmer (ie above 25c) room.

    • This has been driving me nuts, it used to be alright and only doing it occasionally but then just got stuck at full speed. I just took the case off and its been quiet since.

      • +1

Could you replace it with a quieter fan? Or one with a manual control?

        • +1

Possibly but its kind of molded into a shroud/duct like a laptop fan so not easily.

          • +1

            @thesab: Nothing a good drilling couldn't solve I say.

    • +1

Do you have any storage media connected via those docks, like SSDs/Usb sticks/HDDs? Curious if the docs disconnect them computer(s) enter sleep.

  • Does anyone know if this supports 5K2K (@60hz)?

    Just saw listing: Max Resolution: 3840 x 2160 - 30 Hz

    • +1

      I have a WD19TB and it supports 2x 4k monitors at 60Hz

      • I have 1x 5K2K & 1x 4K…based on bandwidth, I think it should be ok, but not 100% sure. I guess I'll have to wait and see! (Worst comes to worst, I'll use it for a different desk setup.)

  • Anyone using with Macbook Pro M1/2 chip? I wonder if it can display two separate monitors (not duplicated) from Macbook.

    • -1

You’d be looking for a dock with DisplayLink, not Thunderbolt alone

      • +1

This shouldn't be necessary on a Pro chip I believe (emphasising that point, I'm not 100% sure)? Pro and Max have better display support, but I'm not sure about multiple displays off of the same thunderbolt port to be fair.

I have to use DisplayLink with the dock I use at work and it's an awful experience with the Mac. Adds a noticeable amount of latency that isn't present when connecting via my Windows laptop. In both cases this is via USB3 (and a USB-A port weirdly enough), so perhaps not pertinent to this case at all.

I have one that I used to use on an M1 MBP 14"

It will do 2 external monitors via the Mac TB port, assuming your Mac supports 2 monitors (eg older MacBook Air do not).

To get dual display, you must plug one monitor into the docks TB port and the other monitor into one of the other ports (hdmi, DisplayPort, or usb c). See Figure 2 on this page

You can buy usbc to hdmi or usbc to DisplayPort cable pretty cheaply.

Now there is a quirk with this dock and MacOS. if you just plugin as suggested in Figure 2 on the Dell page, one of the displays will often drop down to 30Hz and you can't increase it in macOS display settings. I discovered in an online forum that you can get both in 60Hz by plugging in the dock with one of the displays turned off (but plugged in). After the first display detects at 60Hz you turn on the second display - bingo, both 60Hz.

I got sick of doing this so upgraded to a WD22TB4 which doesn't suffer this problem ie always detects my dual 4k @ 60Hz.

      • Mine is MBP 14 M1 as yours. So I guess I can use one monitor with HDMI to HDMI, and another monitor with USB-C to HDMI. Is that what you mean? Thanks.

        • yep

          • @lunchbox99: Does WD22TB4 work well without the trick you have mentioned? If yes, then I would go with that instead of solving lots of issue with 19 version.

  • +2

Any advantage of a dock over my current KVM arrangement ?

My desktop PC has three monitors. One of those, along with the kb, mouse, webcam, and speakers, is connected to a KVM that I also use with my Dell 5421 work laptop. The laptop connects to the KVM via HDMI and USB-A.

    • +1

With a dock like this, it'll bring you down to a single cable that'll also charge a typical laptop.

    Does this have 19tb inbuilt?

  • +2

Thanks I ordered one, use them at work but have a cheapo hub at home.

    • Same here. Have two work locations at home one with a Dell and the other with a cheapo. Going to swap the cheapo out for this one.

  • Damn. Didn't realise it has a fan. Also cheaper listing on ebay. I cancelled.

    • Link to cheaper ebay listing?

        • +3

FWIW, that one is WD19TBS, which is newer, but doesn't have the 3.5mm audio ports.

          • @caprimulgus: Good pickup

          • @caprimulgus: If I'm using a usb-c headset and never use the 3.5mm audio jack, then this newer dock would serve me better? is there any other material benefit to this newer version? Thanks heaps

            • +2

@A female dog: Seems like there isn't a difference besides the 3.5mm audio jack. If you don't need the audio jack then get the cheaper one from ebay.

        • Thanks. Got it for $78 with Ebay Plus

          • @jamba: Just be aware the ebay listing is the WD19TBS, which is newer, but doesn't have the 3.5mm audio ports as caprimulgus said

            • @captainmac: Are the audio ports necessary? Could use the pc audio ports if needed

              • +1

@jamba: It really depends on your use case. You can always use the ports on the pc. I use wireless headphones with my portable devices. My only gripe is the fan as it's a point for failure/noise for me.

              • +1

@jamba: Whether the audio ports are necessary to you or not will just depend how much of a hassle it will be plugging audio separately.

If you switch between laptops, you may find it annoying to plug audio in each time - the audio output on the dock permanently connected to your speakers may be useful to you.

If you are using it with a single desktop computer (or if you use bluetooth speakers/headphones), then it's probably not going to be an issue for you.

                • @caprimulgus: Thanks. I cancelled my ebay order

                  • +1

@jamba: No worries - I ordered the WD19TB (with audio) from ebay from the link posted by HomeAlone below.

  • Does this only work with laptops with a thunderbolt port? My one only has a USB C port. Will it still work?

  • +9

    Cheaper elsewhere

    $83 delivered

$78.02 delivered with eBay Plus coupon APRIL6

    • Cheers, bought one from ebay.

  • How is this better than the Dell D6000 I use?

    • +2

D6000 uses DisplayLink drivers that consume CPU. WD19TB is much more resource efficient if you have Thunderbolt 3 ports

    • +2

To translate that into simpler terms: the thunderbolt dock uses the GPU of your laptop; the DisplayLink one emulates a graphic driver via USB that is only fit for office use.
Many people buy a laptop with powerful graphics, never realising that by hooking it up to a DisplayLink dock it doesn't actually get used.

      • What about if you are just using HDMI to Dock then usb-c from dock to laptop? What decently priced dock from Dell can increase performance (or decrease laptop CPU utilisation) in this instance?

        • It's not the type-C cable, it's the protocol. If it's avDisplayLibk dock, it won't send a DisplayPort signal (terminating as HDMI port - yeah, don't ask).

I don't use docks - I just type-C hubs with HDMI and PD pass-through for charging. Much cheaper.

          • @Make it so: Wow interesting. I just assumed that everything in a Dell dock was passthrough with all the trickery and grunt required to do so inside the dock. I didn't realize that it was common for these things to drain a laptop CPU.

  • Is it working with macbook air?
I need to use dual monitors

  • The PSU is 180W but how much power can it deliver via USB C.

I'm thinking whether this can support a gaming laptop, provided that the laptop supports charging via usb c.

don't have the laptop yet, so just theorising.

  • I got one when these were last available. Mine had a damaged USB-A port - haven't got around to returning it for a undamaged one.

For some reason, one of the USB-C ports on the rear (the one on the back of the thunderbolt module) only works if the dock's built-in thunderbolt cable is connected to a laptop/device etc. I think I saw other users noting this. Not sure why - assuming it's by design?

It does have an audio port, but I noticed this seems to disable the audio port on a couple of mini-PCs I briefly connected to my dock, while they're plugged in; but not the audio port on my HP laptop. Not sure what that's about.
