Xiaomi Redmi 12 4G 256GB $199 + Delivery ($0 C&C / In-Store) @ JB Hi-Fi

490

Just came across this in one of the JB Hi-Fi promotion email. A pretty decent phone for the price. I know that Helio G88 is not the best processor out there but should be good as a backup phone or as primary for the elderly.

6.79" FHD+ (2460x 1080) 90Hz DotDisplay

50MP AI triple camera

Large 5000mAh typical battery

IP53² dust and splash resistance

3.5mm headphone jack

Potentially an all time low for this phone.

    Still can't beat Moto G54.

    • -1

Nothing can when u can get it for $39 or less

      • +4

        Even at 199, its better.

        Its A78 cores vs A75.

        8GB ram vs 4GB.

        Stereo speaker vs mono

Sure it has less storage at 128 vs 256, but you can just put in a sd card.

        • +1

          And no 5G.

        • +1

You got the ram wrong. Redmi 12 also has 8 GB but doesn't have 5G as compared to G54.

          • +2

@ninohax: I read it as 4gb ram. Didn't realise they still sell 4g phones lol.

            • @dyziplen: I assumed that and yes I agree they shouldn't be selling 4G phones in 2024. But practically speaking the phone should be good for couple of years until we actually truly move on to 5G completely.

              • @ninohax: My understanding is that the 5g network requires a lot of cells because the signal has a short range, so 5g will really only used in the city or higher density areas, and 4g is here for the foreseeable future.

                • @AsSeenOnTv: This is an incorrect understanding.
The range of any mobile technology is predominantly related to the broadcast frequency.

The initial rollout of 5G used largely high frequency, shorter ranged wavelengths partly because they allow higher data rates, but mostly because they were the only frequencies not already being used by the other technologies.

This will change as the lower frequency (850 and 900MHz) 3G frequencies are switched across to 5G following the shutdown of 3G services.

                • @AsSeenOnTv: So only where the majority of people live?
And if you vacation overseas where its not held back by the NBN lol.
I would never get a 4g phone (again) (hotspot was much better on 5g).

        • +2

That's all true, but im pretty sure the Xiaomi camera shits, pisses and spits all over the Moto one, if that is really important to you.

      • +1

It was that cheap? I mean it got it for $60 with Amaysim ($30 of that is a forced sim purchase but still 60 overall imo since i would never willingly buy a $30 sim for one month).

  • +10

Is this guaranteed to work with all carriers when 3g is switched off?

    • +3

      Good question.

      • +2

Legally it would HAVE to be. Otherwise it would be non compliant to the E000 legislation.
But buying a 4G only phone seems like a dumb idea…
3G frequencies are mostly getting farmed into 5G.
So to maintain similar geographic coverage to what you've historically seen, 5G capability is going to be important.

        • +1

Otherwise it would be non compliant to the E000 legislation.

this only means the carrier turns off your number, rather than make it illegal to sell the phone?

          • +2

@sangohan: Optus have begun blocking phones from ranges that are known to lack B28, apparently. (Eg. Some older imported iPhones)

            • @Namidairo: What is the rationale behind Optus deciding to block phones which lack B28?
I am using a phone without B28 and I am having VoLTE support (on Optus and Vodafone) since Jan'2023.
However, I don't get VoLTE on Telstra/Boost (and I suppose this is due to B28) as mentioned by Telstra on their 3G Shutdown page

Voice calls on 4G need a VoLTE-capable device on 700 MHz (Band 28).

So, is Optus blocking phones without B28 since this is required by Telstra, and the E000 legislation states that your phone should be able to support VoLTE on all Australian Networks?

          • @sangohan: Illegal may be the wrong word.
But it certainly would not meet any definition of "fit for purpose" under Australian Consumer Law.

        • When it rains my 5g doesn't work, am i alone in this problem?

          • @Headless: You can't compare 5G coverage today to 5G coverage once 3G is turned off and 5G on the current 3G frequency is activated.
The difference will be night and day.

    • +3

Yes, checked both IMEIs on AMTA, came out OK. Most recent grey import Xiaomi phones are actually compatible, excluding Xiaomi 14 (small one) and Poco F6 series.

      • Poco X3 Pro…. 4g phone. Does volte band 7 and band 8…. Is getting blocked as of 3g shutdown, according to AMTA and Voda and 3498.

    • @mathew42: most likely: yes & people can contact AU-Xiaomi to confirm if HB-Hifi is an authorised-seller of this model. But…

      G54-5G Android14: Running-Services tells me that my-phone is using 3 - 3.5GB ish RAM & sometime more via Android14/APP background-processing. I'm a light-user. 4GB ram likely to make Redmi12 sometime UN-responsive/laggy now & how is it going cope 1-2 yrs time ?

It's weak processor will frustrate your experience: move-on.

Note that this is a 4G phone with a weak Helio G88 processor from 2020. The G54 is a much better option at $209 + $30 Plan cost at amaysim.

If you still want it, it's cheaper at Mobileciti $189.05 delivered using MCOCT5

    • Nice. You should post this as a separate deal.

      • +4

It's been even cheaper in the past, e.g. $179. People are upvoting this phone without understanding it's not worth it.

    • +4

Definitely, if you can get Moto G54 for $200 ish that is a better phone but at the time of posting this deal G54 was retailing for $299 everywhere. And I tried using the promo code that you have mentioned on Mobileciti but that barely brought down the price by a mere $14.85 bringing the final price to $282.15.

      • +2

The G54 has been on sale at amaysim for $209 for a long time

        • -1

          Would Officeworks match this price?

          • +1
            • @shxhshzhz: Damn, are they a reliable site to buy off?

              • @Cruehead81: They're a major telco. OzBargainers have been buying phones from their sales for a long time.

              • @Cruehead81: I'd be more than surprised if you dont know Amaysim.

                • -1

@djoz: I must have been living under a rock as I've never heard of them lol.

Hopefully big W or Officeworks have the phone on sale soon.

  • Obligatory "4G in 2024??!!"

    • +4

      So why did you upvote?

      • +7

Some members just upvote everything posted regardless

didn't expect EC to be one of them 😭😭

        • -1

Yeah, this tough crowd on Ozbargain seem to like taking the piss on people for small things quickly.

  • +6

None of the Xiaomis being sold at JB Hifi is price competitive unfortunately. Better off sticking with the Moto G series if you are on a budget

  • Camera arrangement is….. inspired

    • Your mistake was expecting originality from Xiaomi

  • +4

Gone are the days when Redmis were bang for bucks

    • +5

Never in Australia. Still cheaper in international markets especially in Asia.

    • +1

I bought my first Redmi 1S for $105 in Sep'2014.
At that same time, the Motorola MotoG (1st Gen) was selling for more than $230.

Current phone I am using is Redmi Note 5 Pro; purchased overseas for $240, during Mar'2018. And I am still using it as my primary phone, 6 years and 7 months on.

      • will it be blocked by carriers comes 28 Oct 24?

      • I don't get posts like this - Do you want recognition for having old stuff and not upgrading or something?
Congratulations you are happy with old camera, not much ram, and a small screen.

        • I'm pretty sure he's not after recognition, he's basically saying that the Xiaomi phone, 6 years on is still working well! Good on him for not changing phones every 2-3 years as majority do!

  • -1

I just hate xiaomis ui… Too "cute".

    • +1

I've got a Xiaomi Mi 9T, not sure what you mean? Ui seems fine.

      • A bit too cartoony and colourful for me

        • On the Contrary, the Themes App allows you to customise almost everything - even the indicators of Network, WiFi and what not. I have conveniently chosen the thick solid-box type icons of Network and WiFi (as debuted in Android Lollipop), still my favorite.

        • +1

Its android though…. just change the launcher.

  • +2

JB prices are generally rubbish for Xiaomi brands compared to grey imports. Aussie tax and gouge alive. I know the risks involved with grey imports but just saying.

    • Until this whole 3g shutdown thing is finalised i'd be wary of any grey imports. (i have bought several in the past).

Wouldn't want a brick because they decide they are not going to support that version of a phone.

  • +1

Was so close to getting this compared to the g84, then I noticed it's only 4g

    • +1

Please avoid this and wait for the G84 to be on sale.

      • +1

I got the 84 on sale when it was for $269 plus 10% off for new orders through mobicity

        • +1

          Good choice

          • +1

            @shxhshzhz: I'm enjoying it.

Backbone +psx,PPSSPP, mame, PS4 and 5 remote play.

            Great days.

  • Cool that they're selling xiaomi tho

  • +1

jbhifi should really sell the Poco F series

    • No Poco's are on the approved list for after 3g shutdown.

  • Thanks I ordered from mobile it and 🙏 thank you for the discount Code!

    • Don't you want a 5G phone in 2024?

      • @WatchNerd: Boost/Amaysim/Lebara cap their speed 10/15 Mbps: is 5G much faster than 4G ?

        I'll turn-off 5G & see if 4G make a difference.

Fyi, I live in metro with good signal from all 3 major-carriers & only use mobile-data: NO-NBN. Downloading movies is MY-major consumption of data & should be a good test?

        • 13-Oct-24 2000hr Boost-mobile Metro-area: I downloaded a 4.63GB-movie switching between 5G & 4G @ regular-interval (few-minutes) & did a few-rounds of testings. Moto-G54-5G tethered to PC. There were 100+ seeders.
Speed-CAP: speed-graph of the download may shed some light on the validity of the many-write-ups that are on the internet-> https://ibb.co/7jCc7wz.

        • 5G will add more coverage in more places. Most of the current 5G is currently broadcasting on high frequency, low penetration wavelengths.
Following 3G shutdown, the majority of the Low frequency, high penetration spectrum that currently powers 3G (ie 850 and 900MHz) will cut across to improve 5G coverage dramatically.

          • @ESEMCE: @ESEMCE: I come across lots of claims about 5G…likely most were paid & bias reviews base on potential-speed etc…further investigations reveal caveat.

Time will tell…people should fact-check claims & not merely take what we read as truth or RE-state what we read without applying any acid-test.

            • @ab c: Could be conspiracy, or it could be just physics… longer wavelengths (lower Frequencies) travel further distance than shorter ones (higher Frequencies). You know this from being able to head the bass long before you hear the treble.
5G was rolled out in the Gigahertz range (3500MHz) versus Megahertz ranges for 3G (Telstra 850MHz and Optus 900MHz).

Carriers can't simultaneously broadcast 5G and 3G on these lower frequencies, so 5G on the lower frequencies wont commence until 3G is turned off.

              • @ESEMCE: I agree with your-comments & thanks.

My aim is to encourage readers to investigate claims on the internet that are often MIS-information because they leave out critical-information for readers to gain in-depth knowledge & hence-caveat-> 'paid & bias reviews'.

Users' circumstance is wide & individualised, often their-experience is different & likely fall-short of these claims.

          • @ESEMCE: I highly doubt it will improve the 5G coverage. They couldn't even get 4G coverage sorted out and you are expecting them to actually have good coverage with 5G?

      • @watchnerd 4G will be around for another decade, at which point I would assume "mint" would have changed phones at least a couple of times in 10 years!

    • @mint: may be research comments here?

If you can wait 1 month, a better-deal is likely to come up…overdue?

      • I ordered already too late but very appreciated your suggestions 😉

          • @shxhshzhz: Lets me try.Thank you so much.I really appreciate.

  • Hello moto goodbye redme

  • Any other 6.8in or larger phones available anyone can think of?

(looking for one for an older person who is finding the moto g14 a little too small vision wise)
