Haven't posted a Dell deal for a while. Spotted this while browsing their clearance. Dell Inspiron 15R — cheap and cheerful although might not be the best in build quality. $649 gets you this model:

  • Intel Core i7-3612QM Quad Core
  • Windows 7 Home Premium
  • 4GB RAM, 1TB HDD
  • Radeon HD 7670M 1GB
  • DVD +/- RW
  • 2.74kg

Since it's a clearance model there is no way to upgrade the display to Full HD.

Edit: Qwibble is also running a special on Dell cashback now at 8% (ex-GST)

  • Anyone know whether this has USB 3.0 ports?

    • Yes. From the spec it says 3 normal USB 3 and 1 USB 3 PowerShare.

  • sorry what is qwibble? and how to get the cash back?

  • most popular laptop deals having $300 off as well http://www.dell.com/au/p/popular-laptop-deals

  • They're quite heavy for a standard kind of notebook.

  • Only 10/100 port:(

    • Yes, that's disappointing.

  • Any ideas if this is a decent system? seems like a good price for an i7 . Any thoughts on the video card? is this much worse than a 7760?

Its for someone else they basically would use it for the web, email, some basic photo editing etc

Overkill for "web, email, some basic photo editing" :)

Try some of the i3/i5 laptops at around $500 mark.

lol yeh thats what I kinda thought but they have been told by a friend who is an "IT Expert" that they need to get an i7 and a SSD. I explained that to get a SSD you would probably need to get a high end ultrabook or the like which is definitely overkill

The video card is excellent for a laptop and will play new games beautifully on this laptop's screen (if not always at max settings).

Google Anandtech Bench and/or Tom's Hardware GPUs Hierarchy Chart for benchmarks (to compare 7670M to 7760 etc).

I agree specs are way overkill for "web, email, some basic photo editing, etc". i3 and integrated graphics would be fine (spend the $200 you save on an SSD for it, maybe).
