  • Cheap knock off of the RG351V. But at this price a good starter device.

  • What is the difference between this and the RG35XX?

    • +3

I believe this is a clone of the RG351MP.

      • Got it, thanks!

      • +1

I grabbed one from this deal, for $40
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/863086

Pretty sweet for the price. Do you think it's the same as the one in this deal? They are all clones or clones of clones I thought, hard to really know.

Don't think it matters, wasn't able to load new ArkOS on but came fully loaded so no point. Made sure I copied to new brand name SD card though.

PS. Sounds like you are including the new user first discount in the price (~$10 off) which you could use on any purchase.

        • Do you think it's the same as the one in this deal?

Should be the same R36S. Also same seller.

    • +1

I found this video comparison helpful.

Ended up getting a Miyoo Mini Plus for my partner, but as you'll see there's pros and cons to each

Ended up getting a Miyoo Mini Plus for my partner

I personally prefer the Miyoo Mini Plus, especially with OnionOS.

        • this r36s will never get onion?

        • -1

Yes my Miyoo Mini Plus is decent, but you don't miss having lil thumbsticks?

          • +1

@JownehFixIT: Most of the retro games I play don't require a joystick.

If I do need a joystick, I play them on my TrimUI Smart Pro or my Odin 2.

            • -1

@RichardL: Whoa, quite the collection you have there. What do you play on your Steam Deck and Asus ROG Ally?! ;-)

              • +1

                @JownehFixIT:

What do you play on your Steam Deck and Asus ROG Ally?! ;-)

Don't currently own one, but have been eyeing the ROG Ally X…

  • Been pondering getting something like this for a while. Was thinking of a Retroid Pocket 4 Pro, then they announced the RP5 so thought I'd wait for that, but this is a bloody good price so I just ordered one of these (got black 128gb). Shows as a AU$28.85 charge on my visa card - at that price, even if it's crap I'm not out by too much so can always upgrade to an RP5 later.

    • +1

The Retroid Pocket is an Android Based console, whereas the R36S is Linux based. Both has their pros and cons.

Retroid Pocket is also 10x more expensive haha.

      • Yeah, does have a larger screen, though. I'm concerned my ageing eyes aren't going to fare too well with the 3.5" screen on this R36S :P But it's pretty hard to refuse this at this price. At the very least if I do get a RP5 or similar later on I'll at least have a sh*tload of ROMS ready to put onto it :D

        • I have a miyoo mini plus, and usually have to wear my glasses to play it. But it is nice to have a handheld I don't mind it breaks.

I have a RP5 on pre-order. I got it day one. Hope it is decent when it arrives.

          • @serpserpserp: TBH the main thing that put me off getting a RP4Pro (prior to the announcement of the RP5) is that they basically come unconfigured, so a lot of work needed to get the software installed, finding and downloading ROMs, etc. If I get an RP5 later I'll at least have a decent set of ROMs from this R36S to get me started.

            • +1

@AngusD: Reddit is your friend here

            • @AngusD:

at least have a decent set of ROMs from this R36S to get me started.

lol, no. If it comes with roms it will be a bunch of bad dumps, poorly organised, mix of non-English and missing many games.

It's not hard to find ROMs. Spend the time making a good collection.

              • @PainToad: OK you were correct :P

After playing around with it for a couple of days, the sheer amount of sh*t on there in terms of non-English versions, duplicates, games that just don't work, etc… it is not ideal :P

I'd bought a 128Gb Samsung card planning to just flash it with an image of the card that came with the device, but now I've decided it's not worth it. I copied the contents of the supplied SD card to my PC so I can sift through the ROMS later to figure out which ones are worthwhile, and also so I've got backups of the boot files that came with the device (eg the .dtb) just in case.

But instead of copying the supplied card, instead I downloaded a clean ArkOS image and flashed that to my Samsung card, and now I shall commence the arduous process of hunting down my own ROM collection.

Longer term I might get something like a Retroid Pocket 5 (or 4 Pro if I can find one cheap after the 5 comes out). Hopefully the larger screen will be easier on my ageing eyes. But this device seems like a good starting point (especially for the <$30 I paid for it). And fiddling around with it like I've been doing is pretty easy with online guides - that guy who runs Retro Game Corps deserves some kind of medal.

                • +1

@AngusD: That's a lot of effort but why not. Unless you've collected and sorted your own roms you'd run into the same problem. Just need to stick USA or Europe folders/roms, agree there would be a lot of double ups and different versions. Plenty of room on the card though, and easy to add to favorites and select them from that home screen/folder.

Mine seems good out of the box but who knows what they preload on everyone's device.

                  • +1

@G-rig: I was a bit annoyed that some of the stuff I really wanted to play, I couldn't. eg the supplied SNES version of Final Fantasy 6 was in Japanese (or maybe chinese?). There is the GBA version of it on there, I guess, which I think was English. Super Mario World and Super Mario RPG were in Japanese, too.

And I wanted to play NBA Jam on MAME, but it flat out refused to load. But once i did my clean ArkOS install, I copied across that same NBA Jam ROM that didn't work on the out of the box build, and it worked just fine on my clean install. But yeah, I think I'll hunt around for my own ROMS, make sure a get English language ones that work OK. While having thousands of games on there is awesome on paper, in reality I think I'd be happier with a few dozen that I actually want to play and that work properly etc.

                    • +1

                      @AngusD: Nice one for
Not just complaining , but actually finding the issue and fixing it :-)
                      Don’t often see that nowadays!

                    • +2

@AngusD: Yeah mate I haven't tested that many games but there are a heap on there. I just pick it up for a quick go now and then but would be good to sort your roms and just load what you play.

Finally got another 128gb SD so will have another crack at installing ArkOS again. Wouldn't work the last few times but downloaded the recommended version from above.

Can't discuss the roms too much here but good to get the USA ones or whichever to cut down on Double ups and other languages.

                      • +1

@G-rig: I downloaded ArkOS for the RG351MP - that one seems to be the go-to for the R36S. It didn't work initially, but once I copied the linux .dtb file (forget the full name of it) that came with the device back over to the clean ArkOS install's boot partition, that seemed to do the trick. I'm glad I backed up all the files off the supplied SD card before I started, or I might have been stuck for ages trying to find a correct .dtb file for this device. I think it may actually vary depending on which version of the screen you have in your particular R36S, which makes me even more glad I had a backup of the one that came with mine so that I knew it was the correct one.

                        • @AngusD: Good idea to do a backup image straight away given people claim the stock cheap SD cards fail (did the same).

                          I've downloaded this one, ArkOS_R35S-R36S_v2.0_08232024-1_P4 (Download for Panel4 (V5)

Edit: Yah that one works (with the rk3326-rg351mp-linux.dtb file)
                          ;)

I do like how the stock setup cycles through all the different platforms (PlayStation, game boy colour, megadrive etc.. perhaps that will show up when I add some games/folders.

                          • @G-rig: Yeah mine only shows systems for which I have games present in their respective folders. Although right now it only shows the games list as text. I need to track down the cover art. Or get myself a wifi adapter (or USB-C to USB-C cable to use my phone hotspot) and get the device to scrape the cover art itself. But I figure I may as well get the ROM situation sorted first. Which probably means getting a VPN before I take to the high seas in search of ROMS.

          • @serpserpserp: Same here i think i have tonwear glasses… :(

  • Saw this last night and was very tempted to buy a spare in case mine shits the bed. For the price to performance ratio, it really can't be beat.

  • Thanks OP, bought 1

    wow cheap
no issue with multiple ali accounts?

    • +1

      Personally never had issues

      • Can I buy this with incognito model and login with existing Aliexpress account?

        • No, you need to use a new account. Just create one with a different email.

          • +1

@CHUNITHM Luminous: Looks like existing user USD $26. Not sure creating new account is worth it. Heard here people got banned further down this thread. Rather save it for bigger items

    • +1

People on Reddit have had their postal address banned. Personally don't risk it anymore.

      • +1

Banned across all accounts? That's brutal

      • Just use different email/addresses for different accounts, but hardly worth the fk around to get up to $10 off once.

        • +2

how to get different address? one work one home thats all
unless you have like 10 families in different house next each other…
maybe just mistype the house number and then apologies to the neighbour when they come to you with your name on the box

          • +2

@CyberMurning: Two is different enough. Painful and pointless setting up a heap like those people who have to exploit everything to the nth degree.

            It's all cheap enough anyway.

          • @CyberMurning: Relatives

          • @CyberMurning: Just recycle parcel lockers lol

    found this while googling

    if you need WIFI:
I can confirm that the TP-Link Nano AC600 (Archer T2U Nano) works on my R36S with an a-to-c adapter.

    • +1

There are WiFi capable units for the price difference, plus they have the wireless functionality as part of the OS.

      • agree i just offered some idea

      • Do share link with Wifi built in? Don't mind paying slightly more

        • I found one and linked it, but it was flagged by OzBargain, RG35XX+ is what I own, the cheapest price I found was A$69 delivered.

          • @Jimbuscus: Cheers you got it from Aliexpress as well? How is it compare to this unit OP posted?

            • +2

@neonlight: I got from AliExpress, I can only speak on the RG35XX+, it's great and I'm happy with it's handheld comfort and game compatibility.

Some reviewers mentioned the $28 deal above being too small and uncomfortable, that wasn't an issue with the RG35XX+, which was very popular for a while after launch.

As per dollar, I still think the A$28 is better in value, and a great dip your toes entry point.

The truth is you end up buying several of these over time, mainly different form factors and spend more time installing custom OS's. That's most of the fun.

Check out this video about the RG35XX+

              • @Jimbuscus: Excellent info. Thumbs up for your input. I do wonder if the battery is replaceable with ANBERNIC RG35XX-plus

              • +1

@Jimbuscus: I got this one in the previous deal, $40 well spent. Even with a new signup it wasn't $28 (maybe $28 USD).
Amazing for the price, The form factor is great (don't have massive hands), nice and light, cheap.. perfect for travel.

              • +1

@Jimbuscus: Hey mate thanks for your input I got my RG35XX+ it's very good for the price. Awesome machine thanks mate

          • +2

@Jimbuscus: i got the link before it was nerfed. cheers, bought one :) (paid A$45 delivered for 128gb purp)

As an alternative to the TP-Link, I can confirm the combination below works, is cheap, and can be bought from AliExpress when you get the handheld.

  • wonder how much an original gameboy would cost.
wonder how much an original UNUSED gameboy would cost then too! lol

    • +1

gameboy price is crazy in australia go check ebay

    • My son snapped the lid hinge for my og DS a few weeks ago.
I went looking for a parts one on eBay to get an OEM shell, but the prices for even dead ones were ridiculous
Most aftermarket shells are flimsy and don't fit right
I'm just going to buy him one of the retro consoles in the OP instead

  • +1

    Terrible Gameboy ergonomics.

    • +1

Agreed, find one thats shaped like a switch. Or better yet buy a second hand switch lite and install a mod chip.

      • Is it easy to install a mod chip nowadays?

      • Can you mod a switch now? I thought you could only do with with the Og one.

  • +2

These TF/SD cards are normally so cheap you risk losing your save games, you can buy a good cheap TF card from Amazon afterwards.

I own too many of these handhelds.

    • Is there a particular card / brand you would recommend?

      • +4

Brands such as Sandisk or Samsung from reputable sellers.

      • +4

Sandisk or Samsung from Amazon AU (not some random seller)

Because the device is so cheap, I wouldn't recommend going too crazy on a super high spec one like a SanDisk Extreme, because the SD card would blow out the total cost lol

        • Presumably I can copy the ROMs etc off the card onto my PC hard drive at home and just keep them there as a backup. Will buy a better card if/when the included one dies.

          • +1

@AngusD: Just google it. Make a disk image.
            Can always copy too.

This will get you started. A lot of it is a waste of time I couldn't install a clean ArkOS on mine, maybe the device is locked or limited. Just get a Samsung microSD and leave it at that. Can still add more games but don't need to do anything to be honest.

            https://retrogamecorps.com/2023/03/27/arkos-starter-guide/

            • +1

              @G-rig: Thanks, I'll take a look.

I don't really need to do much with it or add more games, I really just want to ensure the games I've got are safe so I'll order a new Samsung microSD card (I can see Evo Pro 128Gb on Amazon for $23.79 which should do me) and copy the contents from the included card onto there. Although at only about $28 for the device itself, I wonder if I'm better of just buying 2 of them and keeping the 2nd one as my backup :P

              • @AngusD: maybe too late but if you have ebay plus usually binglee ebay shop is selling evo for cheap (After ebay plus promo code - unique or generic).
nah just buy one first dont put too much high expectation. its 28 but still 28 better in your wallet than drawer

            • +1

@G-rig: Newer models have a different screen, you need a different dtb file for V4 screens and above.

AeolusUX does images of ArkOS for all R36S variants.

              https://github.com/AeolusUX/ArkOS-R3XS

Otherwise you can use the tool and the original OS that came with the device and see what variant you have.

I have one of the original variants I bought a long while back and I use the above ArkOS without any problems.

              • @neomoz: Cheers, I tried the different dtb files and stuff from those links, always a black screen. Was a bit pointless anyway as it's fine how it is and preloaded with a heap of rooms, all pretty slick.

No need to update or tinker really, but quick start would be ok. I always shutdown the system properly and the battery lasts quite a while.

              • @neomoz: hey mate got around to sussing this out with the tool
                uploaded 'rk3326-r35s-linux.dtb' and = Panel 4.
So it is apparently not a clone at least.

In that case would the above ArkOS image work?
                Cheers

      • A heads up for this particular machine - it doesn't like certain brands in the second SD slot. If you're only planning on using one card it's fine but it's picky about the second. Google R36S wiki, there's a compatibility spreadsheet in there

  • Been enjoying mine for ps1

  • 64GB model except for purple. About 2 USD more for 128GB
dont bother with 128gb they go straight to bin

    • Why dont bother with the 128?

      • +5

its just the SD card size not the internal storage size.
the and sd card are rubbish even for usd2 more

      • +1

        To be fair,

It can play two PSP God of Wars, and the first 5 GTAs (1,London,2,3,VC) work great. So it's not teeeeeeeeechnically a false claim.

The direct pictures of PS4 games might be though ;)

    • So did my sister. Paid $100.

      • They make people fall for those fake prices. Dont pay $300 when its $120 so its seems like a good deal.
