For this sort of money I expect alot more than a 1 year warranty… gosh. It shouldn't be our job to whip out the ACCC's website and the line saying "expected to last a reasonable amount of time" every single time when chasing up warranty.

    • +2

Yeah, my Alienware died after one year, I just dragged it back to China for repair.

      • +7

The only warranty I trust is Amazon AU's goodwill 'warranty' and Kmart's warranty. I don't believe in manufacturer's warranty anymore.

Everytime I step into a JBHIFI or Harvey Norman to make a claim… the first thing do is try to talk their way out of it. And then if I make it past that step then they have to send it back to the manufacturer to inspect. It's never refund or on the spot exchange.

Amazon will shove your money back in your mouth before you say anything. First reply is a "Thank you for being a prime member", 2nd reply is an apology, and 3rd reply is if the refund is to go back to the original payment method or a gift card.

        • +4

Amazon’s customer service is amazing imo but I think that’s only in Australia as I read terrible feedback from amazon usa on reddit

        • Bunnings I've found to be just as good, if not better.

I've had a whipper snipper I bought on clearance (further discounted with Powerpass), refunded at current similar stock price with no receipt, made $150 profit.
They've also refunded a front door deadbolt that was bought by my home restorer for an insurance claim. Again with no receipt, and me with no idea where it was actually purchased or for how much.
I've had an Tablesaw I bought secondhand item I bought for 1/3 of retail price, due to being second hand and some small damage/missing parts. It was refunded and replaced at Bunnings, with receipt, no problems.

Bunnings return staff are amazing. At this stage, I'm pretty sure I could return our teenager for a full refund if the wife would agree to it.

          • @HiredGoon: Interesting that someone would outline criminal activities on OZB but here we are

            • @serpserpserp: I think you might be looking into it too much, my activities might be bordering on cheeky, but not illegal at all. In each case there was manufacturing defects or failure during warranty period, and Bunnings were actively helpful in the refund or replacement process in each scenario. My point was that many manufacturers or stores would outright refuse to honour a warranty for simple problems they could choose to look past, purely to get out of their obligations.

        • +1

NB Some companies are really good with warranties, Corsair comes to mind.

          • @Franc-T: Could you please elaborate on this? describing the steps you had to do. like where did you send the item. Did you pay shipping and did they refund it at the end?

My perception is that they require a copy of the receipt(who keeps those these days? and either way losing the receipt doesn't make hardware fail). In my personal case that 10 year warranty might as well have been 10 minutes. If i was as disingenuous as they are I would just forge a receipt. Ive still got many years to figure out what to do.

            then there's this;

            Exclusions
This warranty does not cover problems or damage resulting from, but not limited to:
Wear and tear from normal use

            "really good with warranties" indeed.

            • @Smuge: Im not sure what you are asking. I dont have to submit a lot of warranties, but companies can be vastly different in how things are done.

A bad example is asus denying warranties unjustifiably or HP designing a dodgy cable for their G2 Vr and more robust replacement costing $250 bucks.

Good examples are where there are active avenues for support and no fuss warranty replacement and replacement 5500 control pads sent out by logitech.

NB I dont know what warranty you took this from but excluding wear and tear from a warranty is entirely reasonable.

Ie not every company fights you on warranties unjustifiably.

Sick of Apple prices (& warranty) in the Cost of Living Crisis Age - getting worse. The only "good" thing is if WW3 starts you might not have to pay off the loans (enjoy life while you can, let oligarchs worry about their future ;)

    • Especially with the reliability problems of recent Intel chips.

8gb of GPU ram is so gimped in 2024.

    3k for a 4070 💀

    • +5

It's not even an "RTX 4070". It should be illegal to even call/name it that. The desktop version of the 4070 yields ~50% more FPS than the laptop variant.

      • i had a 3070Ti Legion Pro laptop and it achieved the same Timespy score as 4070 Legion laptops

        • +1

yea sadly 30XX to 40XX is not performance boost but mainly on the AI cores for DLSS and FG. 50XX series probably won't have significant power boost too since nvidia ceo literally said "they cannot do computer graphics without AI anymore" lol

          • @Letrico:

they cannot do computer graphics without AI anymore

Do they mean they can't improve raw silicon performance? Just can't make faster chips anymore?

            • @serpserpserp: I think they can, but with laptops, you're limited in terms of wattage and thermal

            • @serpserpserp: And I think they are stretching the definition of AI, stuff like interpolation etc arent ai

    • Lol Asus zephyrus g14 is $3700 with a 4070 with current cheapest being $3500.
No one does a model quite like this except razer which costs $5000.
So I'm left waiting for a g14 to drop to something reasonable. But there are things outside specs which contribute to price such as build quality etc.

      • Razer in USA gets deep discounts, so there silly aud pricing without ever having the same discounts kills the brands

    • +1

Its about the same perf as the 8GB 4060, the price difference between a 4070 8GB and 4060 8GB is pretty ridiculous for no real perf diff (I just bought 4060 8GB for that reason)

At this price the HP with a 4080 is a much better buy: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/867378

have fun with hp. laptop been dead for 4 weeks. they done nothing but make me wait on end. its only 6 months old.
someone else having same issue as me.

      • +1

Yeah Hp is pretty bad, dell and Lenovo respond a lot faster in my experience

        • also got two hp laptops, both had dead pixels, and the 4090 GPU. so like its a joke spending over 4k and it has dead pixels.

          • @Rukiata: just on the dead pixel issue - I had my L5pro swapped 4 times due to it
haven't had any other issue but Lenovo isnt totally dead pixel free from my experience

          • @Rukiata: "its a joke spending over 4k" regardless of pixels (unless you make big money). Tech advances so fast that overcapitalising is waste. If it's configurable you can add extra life until it's painful to maintain it.
The future should be Cloud (less dependence on edge computing, so you can scale up dynamically ;)…if our Govts were smart to develop proper NBN infrastructure :(

    • Nahh I'd buy this over the hp any day.
Especially with laptops you want it to last, as once something goes wrong it's the whole device that needs to be swapped.
You would know as you have a Mac… Which is even worse for performance to price.. but you get build quality and reliability.

  • Good laptop, white is nicer though.

    • Can configure this build to white for an extra $50 - it's what I did.

  • HODL for black friday sale if you can, dont buy it now, sure price will be lot cheaper by then

If anything It'd reccomend buying a Metabox when it's on sale. Yes it's a rebrand of a Clevo + some other brand… but mine is 6 years old and the ribbon cable has just started to show signs of breaking. $35 for a another cable and it's good as new. Other than that, everything is working perfectly; screen, keyboard, thermals, fans…etc.

    • +1

Work bought me a Metabox Prime-16 6months ago and I love it. Solid build, good battery, nice keyboard. Haven't had any dramas with it yet.

    • The other day I was trying to find reviews on these Metabox laptops and couldn't find them. How is the customer support on these? Do you know?

      • +1

From what I've been told, there's a phone number to call and have heard they're easy to deal with (mate had one and loved it - had one warranty issue and it was fixed quickly). I was hesitant before buying but am happy with the purchase.

    • thanks for the comment
I had a quick look at the homepage but anything with 4080+ seems over $3k - do they go on sale often?

    • I loved the original Clevo brand, best gaming laptop ever.

  • $3k and no touch screen. Yikes.

    • +4

Why would you want a touch screen for a laptop?

Get a Microsoft surface pro if you want a touch screen laptop.

      • I present on my Lenovo laptop with touchscreen for about 4 hours per day. Usually geospatial information. Windows 11 Pro mouse scrolling and moving in map platforms is horrible. A touchscreen is significantly faster.

    • +2

I don't think Legions have ever had touch screens. Is anyone using touchscreens on Gaming laptops in the year of our lord, 2024?

      • touch to pay respect
        :D

      • +1

I know it's not technically a laptop, but my legion go is touchscreen

  • Confirmed the the cashback tracking for my order has come through in TopCashback when checking two hours post order.

Ah, i9-14900HX no thanks, I highly recommend not buying this CPU.

    • Curious what are the issues with it?

      • Im assuming the same issues discovered across the desktop range 13th and 14th gen CPUs?

        https://community.intel.com/t5/Processors/July-2024-Update-o…

        • I've been chasing this laptop for a while, reading Reddit forums and I don't remember anyone having issues with this laptop / processor combo. I am waiting for black friday and see if further discount will be available.

          • @Potatohead82: Well lets just say I would be giving this series a wide berth unless you want to take the chance of it going awry.

  • i wish the 14 inch was back on sale!

Lemovo ideapad pro 5 gen 9 is also on sale. Killer laptops for price.

    • link????

      • Just search lenovo ideapad pro 5i gen9, they have very good batter life. Not for gaming though although they offer rtx 4050 on a few models.

  • Display: 16" 3.2K (3200 x 2000), IPS,

Interesting display choice for such a high end laptop

    • I think a cheapy Acer Swift Go 16" also comes with 3.2K screen but in OLED, so doesn't need to be only on 'high' end laptop

  • I shouldn't (having recently purchased another ASUS TUF A15 for gaming purposes) but I do have my eye on the Legion.

Have a more ideal price point (if it was under $2,000 I'd buy first and regrey later lol), but its kinda amusing to me that I'll justify to myself that buying an item for xxx price is ok. But I'll baulk at paying xxx for other things. I recently purchased a retired Lego set for a large amount that I had no issue with. Yet there are other cheaper items that I do want but won't pay the current prices.

  • This laptop on education store is $2806.09 , coupled with cash rewards 14% cash back pulls ahead by around $122 making it $2452.52
