  • Do they have the RTX 4090 version 24GB VRAM?
    Need it for LLM.

    • +1

Running LLM off a laptop, bold

      • Maybe he should ask the LLM to see if there's a way to look through the ebay site to see if they have a 24GB option.

        • +4

he needs one first to ask LLM

          • @Brakus: The more AI interfaces we can create between us and the information we're after, the more efficient things will become.

      • I have it currently running on RTX 4070Ti but would like the 24GB VRAM.
Some online are running LLM on Mac mini M2 and MacBook Pro M2 using 32GB RAM.
It would be smaller models and response times would be slow, which is fine for me, for now.

Thank you for sharing Congo. Noted that you have tried to share with the broader group that you are smart enough to manage LLMs but not quite smart enough to use a search bar.

          • -1

@Evanlet: Never mind, I found a good deal. Thanks for your advice.

        • Which LLM are you running?

          • @DontNeedThis: Mainly Llama 3.1 8B, but playing around with all different models as well.

            • @congo: Llama 3.1 8B runs pretty great at 8bit quantisation, which only takes up 8gb VRAM. Are you dabbling in full fine tuning or LoRA weights?

              • @BlockchainBill: Thanks, not full, I would like to run the 70B model and higher.

                • +1

@congo: Yeah fair enough. In that case you definitely just want max VRAM. 70B, even in 4bit, can't entirely fit in 24GB. You're best option is 2 3090s. I've been tossing up on adding a second but the part of me that likes to chase shiny things wants to wait for the 5090 even if my gaming days are mostly behind me.

                  • @BlockchainBill: Yeah I have been weighing up about getting second hand 3090s, or hoping that the 5090 release would push the 4090 down.
I don't need it right now, so I will probably wait until the 5090 is released.

Intel 13th Gen CPU? Good luck…….

    • +1

Only desktop chips affected, for the 999th time

      • +2

From the company that lied about it lol. Then in a year we find out laptops are affected too but they said sorry.

      • 13700HX is a desktop chip but BGA

        • +1

Intel has specifically said that HX laptop chips from 13 gen and 14 gen are not affected by the Vmin Shift Instability issue. whether you believe them or not is entirely up to you.

          https://community.intel.com/t5/Processors/Intel-Core-13-14th…

          • @k2k8k5: Intel said that but there were cases reported. Initially Intel also said it was the motherboard manufacturers who caused these issues and later Intel also said it was NVIDIA causing the issue.

      • thats incorrect, it affects intel 13th and 14th gen series with a wattage higher than 65W.

  • I know it's 13th gen…. but hooooooooooly

  • I think 4800 is s bit slow when it comes to ddr5 speeds

  • hp omen has bad quality. i had a 4090 desktop from them. after 6 months the pc freezes itself in gaming. had to request a replacement. i'd go for lenovo

  • Laptop 80 90 are fake. Nvidia named them like that for fraud marketing. The laptop 90 is a castrated desktop 80 chip.

    • +2

laptop gpu will never be able to run the same as desktop gpu. Will never have enough cooling and power draw to run it.

      • Should not call it 90 when it is a 80 chip. And heavily handicapped. It is fraud

        • You are all downvoting this guy but he's correct, they should hyave a M at the end to show its a mobile part.

  • +3

    He makes a fair point.

Sure, we all know that Laptop GPUs are not the same as the desktop card, but the average consumer absolutely does not.

NVIDIA could have simply called it the 4080m and 4090m (m designating mobile), and it was an intentional marketing choice not to do so in an attempt to mislead less-informed consumers.

  • +1

That 4090 laptop is an insane deal.

    • +1

Agreed. Honestly so close to pulling the trigger.

      • Do it my friend. I'll teach you how to undervolt it.

  • Battery life isnt great if you plan to use it to do light browsing, daily stuff besides gaming. People are reporting 2 - 3 hours

    • Seems about right given the specs and size of the machine.

  • +1

beware that this laptop has a pretty big weakness which is no G-sync on the display. MSI's vector line also suffers from this issue. can't imagine forking out so much money for a top tier gaming laptop but having to deal with frame tearing and/or stuttering.

also shame that they only give the 13700 HX processor instead of the top spec 13900/13980 HX which has double the E cores (16 vs 8)

  • 1 year mail-in warranty. Lol.

  • slow RAM
