  • Does anybody have experience with these? Can they be used for ATO and council rates silimiar to the Vanilla cards?

    • +30

These gift cards are a little different (and I last used one nearly a year ago).

They are physical gift cards that operate on the Mastercard network, and are operated by the same company that operate the Special gift card scheme.

However, the physical gift card has no card information on it (except for an expiry date). If you want to be able to use it for online purchases (or to add to a supported mobile wallet, which I think is only Apple Pay and Google Wallet), you need to tap the physical gift card against your device’s NFC reader. That will trigger a prompt on your device to register the gift card under your name and then add it to the Karta mobile app (from where you can see the card details, transaction history, add to mobile wallet, etc). If you are wondering why you need to jump through all these hoops to see the card details, it could have something to do with the spate of incidents where people have bought physical Activ Visa gift cards, Coles Mastercard gift cards and Vanilla Visa gift cards with some of the card details scratched off the physical card.

If you do not want to go through the steps of adding it to the Karta app, you can use the gift card physically by swiping the card on the EFTPOS terminal and pressing Enter without entering any PIN (similar to Vanilla Visa gift cards).

I have only used a Karta Mastercard gift card on Card.Gift via Apple Pay, so I cannot advise whether the ATO or your local council is a permitted merchant.

        Great info as always Wookie

        • +1

Yeah, so thankful that we have you here @WookieMonster :)

      • I assume the removal of card info in print still doesn't make them immune to the brute force hacking that is done on the other prepaid cards like the Coles MasterCard? As long as the card details follow a pattern (expiry date/ starting digits)

      • Any way to use this to pay bills online, since theres no 16 digits info?

        • +2

If you want to see the card information (i.e. card number, expiry date CVV2), you need to add the card to the Karta app via your phone’s NFC antenna.

If your phone does not have a working NFC antenna (or you do not want to go through the process of registering your card and running the Karta app), you can only use the card in-person by swiping it on an EFTPOS terminal.

          • @WookieMonster: What do we write for cardholder name?

            • +4

@Jozy1818: If you are talking about what to provide when redeeming the gift card at a merchant, you can use anything as the cardholder name. It does not matter whether you use your real name, "Prepaid Cardholder", "Astro Boy"…

              • +1

@WookieMonster: Oh wow that's interesting, thank you for your help WookieMonster

  • wow - 35-09-2024 when is this valid?

    • +1

They fixed it, says 25 now

  • +3

    Profit — $4.05*5 = 20.25 x No. of accounts your household holds
Downside — managing multiple cards and left over balances.

Paying bills incur charges, kinda reduces the profit. Hence good for either gift cards purchase if you have any upcoming plans or general purchases by adding it to wallet / Apple pay

      • +1

CC fees? Only for some places

        • Right, from the bill side. I originally read it ss paying bills with these cards will incur additional charges from the Karta Mastercard side (on top of the cc fees). This makes more sense, thanks.

    • Can you pay with this card to pay for this card? Although it's kinda pointless.

      • Try it out and report back.

  • +1

Handy with my 28 Degrees offer " Spend $75 @ BigW and get $10 cashback".

  • +2

Does this work with the ATO?

  • I believe these guys are the same people who issue Auspost prepaid mastercard.

Seems to be a common distributor for cash back cards.

  • It’s very hard to use. I held the card near my phone, and nothing happened. So annoying!

    • Apple or Android?

      • apple

Purchased using $99.99 split payments with HSBC Everyday Global for 2% cashback. Didn't attempt to use a WISH card, which presumably wouldn't have worked.

Checkout offered to use the monthly 10% everyday extra discount as normal, but presumably this also wouldn't work for gift cards and would just waste it.

    • Can confirm it doesn’t discount it further. Unsure if it’s been “wasted” however I will go back 2moro and scan the EDR Card again.

The Extra Discount cannot be used for or on any smoking or tobacco products and accessories, liquor, gift cards (including iTunes), mobile recharge, Woolworths Mobile, travel cards, tickets, cash outs, delivery charges (including Delivery Unlimited items), bag fees, donations, Carpet Care, lottery products, pre-order kiosks, purchases on a charge account, BIG W Photos online, Apple products, gaming consoles, Playstation Portal and Playstation VR devices, rainchecks, BIG W eBay, BIG W Market, DukeLiving, pre-orders, lay-by fees, remote and bulk orders or Everyday Market from Woolworths orders and any purchases made at Ampol Woolworths Metro and MetroGo stores.

I'll be very surprised if it wasn't wasted.

    • Did you go through self-checkout? Split payments work for gift cards?

      • +1

Yes, split payment worked at the self checkout.

        • Did you buy the max 5 cards in one transaction and do 6 split payments?

          • @rokufan: One card test purchase, then four cards together in the next purchase.

  • -1

IMHO, after the fee, the discount is too low bother with this gift card.

  • +3

    $479.75 for $500
    4.05% discount

    • is it really worth it?

      • +3

        $20 is $20

        • +1

Alright, you have convinced me - that'll pay for my lunch. The cards can be used for rates or levies due soon. My local Big W better have them - will also use the HSBC card for % extra discount.

  • 35th of Sep? Someone doesnt know their days of the month song 😁

  • Can this use through paypal ?

    • +2

Yes, just purchased a $50 Woolworths gift card using PayPal payment.

  • +5

Ok just bought a pack - yes, ATO accepted them with usual 0.2% fee - fyi @WookieMonster

app is crap though, takes 2-3 nfc scans to register card

    • also someitmes it shows not 16-digit card number, but 20? You need to restart the app to get the right one.

      • Can you add this to PayPal? I guess once you get the 16 digit card number, adding to mobile wallet is possible

        • I already spent it on ATO, so cannot check, sorry

        • +5

I was able to add one of mine to PayPal.

        • +1

          Yes

  • This deal has "5 cards per reward member" limit. As I remember, you can grab a paper temporary reward card at the checkout - I'm wondering would that work for 10% discount too?

    • I believe 5/EDR per day is omitted.

      • So its 5/EDR per day??

  • +1

None left at garden city. The pros cleaned them out in the morning

  • -1

where is the 10% off available? went to a big w in NSW and there is no discount at checkout

    • +2

Did you scan your Everyday Rewards card and press Pay Now on the checkout?

      • Pretty sure I did… Did anyone in NSW get discount?

        • +1

You can check by looking at the transaction on the EDR app.

[ to see if card scanned]

    • It (strangely) doesn't display the discount until you subtotal it all for checkout and payment.

When there are discounted gift cards at Coles, the discount is shown on the screen at the time each gift card is scanned.

    • +1

@helloliuc Happened to me as well at the serviced checkout. There was no discount, Everyday Rewards card was scanned and the EFTPOS terminal showed the full price, waiting for payment. The staff member wasn't aware and said there is no discount for gift cards. Anyway I got her to start all over again and the 10% discount showed up then. Probably a glitch.

      • +1

Thanks, pretty much what happened to me today. I'll give another try tomorrow.

      • Did mine earlier, also not showing discount until after I press Checkout, after scanning them all. Confirm discount applied on the page just before payment

        • The discount didn't apply at all for me initially as the EFTPOS machine was going to charge $105.95 if I tapped my credit card. It was at the final payment stage. The staff member didn't know why.

  • $95.95 per card, no discount on the $5.95 fee (like Aldi's setup).

can you use activ supermarket card to buy this?

  • Only 3 cards left at local Big W :(

  • Is the coles gift mastercard allowed to buy this?

  • None at my local 😞

  • Passing through Mittagong today and the BIG W there had 5+ left

  • effectively 4.05% off when factoring in the fees.

  • These cards are a hassle to use. I cannot add them to Google Wallet. My phone reacts to the card's NFC chip and launches Chrome with Karta's page, but when I click on the 'Open' button nothing happens.

The cards require a signature when used in store. Some EFTPOS machines ignore this and just let you press okay, but not the ones at Coles. A worker needs to come along and verify the signature. I was asked to sign the gift card, but their pen doesn't work on the card. Eventually the worker just got me to sign the receipt and left it at that.

EDIT: The Karta app needs to be installed first. The Karta web site doesn't tell you that when you click the Open link. Also the Karta cards cannot be added to the google wallet straight up, they need to be put in via the Karta app. Hassle factor to start using these things isn't small.

    • Thanks for sharing your experience- I couldn't get any so didn't end up buying but good to know for future that it's probably more a hassle for the discount!

      • +1

I suspect the Safe To Buy feature (where you tap the gift card against your phone’s NFC chip) was built with iOS in mind (not Android).

When you tap an activated gift card against an iPhone’s NFC chip, it should trigger a pop-up on the screen. If you press Open, it opens an app that displays the gift card’s available balance (and if the gift card is unregistered, there will be a button to register your gift card). Once it is registered, you can see the gift card in the Karta app and do various tasks (e.g. view card details, view balance, view transactions). I have not had a problem with this registration process on iOS, but the Karta app itself can be a bit glitchy.

However, on Android, when I tapped the gift card on the phone’s NFC chip, it prompted me to open a web browser. It loaded a webpage with an Open button (and not much else). Tapping Open kept on opening the same webpage in a new tab (and I already had the Karta app installed on this phone). Very frustrating and weird.

        • On your iOS app, did it “force” you to add the card to Apple Wallet just after entering the OTP? “Force” as in it doesn’t give a No option. I had to just quit the app and once I reopen the card is there.

          • @foxes28: I had the same experience as you. I had no option to decline adding it to Apple Wallet, so I quit the app at that step.

I used this card to pay UNSW tuition fee successfully via AusPost app Post billpay without any fee (surprisingly).

Karta's product is broken on Android. It's very difficult to add a card to the Google Wallet. Usually I need to try 3 to 4 times to get it to work. Karta's app either boots me back to the web browser, or the phone declares the app has crashed and its been closed. I've tried to add my last card 8 times now and every time it fails. I'm following the same procedure I've used successfully before.

    1. NFC scan card. Chrome opens. Click Open button
    2. Karta app loads. Enter PIN
    3. New card appears on screen. Click register.
    4. Enter phone number, and then 6 digit PIN
    5. I can now add the card to G Pay
    6. Click add button, and… I get the first Karta screen in my web browser again.

I cannot add the card directly to Google Wallet. The cards now need to be added manually.

Karta, fix your product. It's broken. I won't be buying it again.

    • I just use them online only. The next 10% off promo will be probably one year later, provided it has not gone busted.
