@tonyjzx: Quite right.
Full 2024 ABS active braking distance is quite different to 1989 brakes and then there's crumple zones, airbags and stability control

• +1

@King Tightarse: That's probably why most drivers tailgate these days. They think that their car and it's modern braking system will pull them up before they hit the car in front.

I've actually done a couple of advanced driving and 4x4 courses with the old girl and the instructors have picked my car as an example to show ABS performs better. With it came to the test, the old Hilux stopped in a shorter distance than the new Hilux on both pavement and dirt. Threshold braking and a lighter vehicle = shorter stopping distance. They were amazed.

• +1

@frugalferret: That is amazing. When its wet or slippery is when the full benefits of ABS kick in.
Did you try that?

• +2

@frugalferret: But ABS prevents skidding when you slam on the brakes (which is the incorrect way to brake) doenst help you stop faster if you brake properly.

• @frugalferret: Come off it sport. There have always been tailgaters - if anything they are rarer now.

For a host of reasons (speed cameras and RBT, driver assist features including ABS, far more training needed to get a licence, fewer people in the hoon age group) really bad drivers are not nearly as common as they were when you and I were young. The accident stats do not lie.

The main hazard these days is methed-up tradies in utes, weekend warriors in immaculately clean Landies with all the fruit trying to drive it like a Formula One car and people texting on their mobile.

• @frugalferret: As good of driver as you may be all it takes is 2 seconds to get distracted.

• @tonyjzx: Old stang drum brakes all round. Non existant booster. Push the brake pedal stop next week.

• @frugalferret:

I still drive the Hilux that my parents bought new 35 years ago, when I was a toddler. It'll likely be a daily driver for 3 generations of drivers in our family.

With no airbags you are pushing your luck.

Guess you may still be running split rims and 750.16 tyres.

• @frugalferret: Frugalferret, your username defo cheks out but best to change it to something a little safer dude. Otherwise you will lose your little ferrett if you are in an accident.

The hyundai excel was landfill. These are at worst scrap.

These are significantly better than the introductory offers coming from the koreans back in the day. Remember the $13990 hyundai excel?

• +1

This car is the Excel of the 21st century, except it costs a lot more than the Excel did.

Absolutely love watching those little buzz-boxes race when they support Supercars or Speedseries. Cheap, cheerful and whacky = perfect recipe for chaos!

• Do YOU remember the $10K Chery?

• The hyundai excel was landfill. These are at worst scrap.

These are tanks. They go on forever. Simple to service and basic cars.

In America they rusted to death though which is why they had a bad name. But it doesn't translate here, you still see these early 90s cars every now and again.

• -1

Do these cars have the advance driving safety features? They don't give out a lot of information.

• +1

This specific model is yet to be ANCAP rated. However, unlike MG, Chery’s current models all have a 5-star ANCAP rating. It would be surprising if this model didn’t get a 5-star too.

The base model includes all the advanced driving safety features standard.

• -1

Yeah they state that on the website. But they don't go into details. It could just be front emergency stop and line centering.

• +4

Standard safety equipment included across the range includes:

• 7 airbags
• Rear parking sensors
• Reversing camera
• Forward collision warning
• Autonomous emergency braking (AEB)
• Lane keep assist
• Lane departure warning
• Adaptive cruise control
• Traffic jam assist
• Integrated cruise assist
• Blind spot monitoring
• Rear collision warning
• Rear cross-traffic alert
• Driver monitoring system
• Tyre pressure monitoring

Ultimate adds:

• Surround-view camera

yeah you didnt look hard enough but to be fair, their website is asking people to put in a pre order when they dont even have a brochure or spec list out

every modern chinese cars has every safety thing under the sun including all the annoying ones

• +13

ANCAP is almost worthless now days.

It’s all about ticking boxes for safety “features” now. Not actually how the people inside will fair during a crash.

https://www.carexpert.com.au/opinion/ancap-has-lost-relevanc…

• @PainToad

ANCAP is almost worthless now days.
It’s all about ticking boxes for safety “features” now. Not actually how the people inside will fair during a crash.

Now I'm really confused.

There's another thread on here where hordes of commenters say they'd rather sell their first born's left kidney than even sniff the presence of a Chinese car without ANCAP rating.

If ANCAP is 'worthless' what standard should consumers look to?

• +2

@Roman Sandstorm: ANCAP reports aren't worthless, but the star system is.

Car A can fair much better in a crash than Car B, but if Car A is missing a technical gizmo or two then it may still only get 4 stars.

You just need to dig a little deeper than the stars. Most cars are getting 5 stars now, but not all 5 stars are equal.

• +2

@happydude:

Car A can fair much better in a crash than Car B, but if Car A is missing a technical gizmo or two then it may still only get 4 stars.

Or 0, which is why the rating system has become a farce/dick swinging contest by ANCAP which loses them credibility. When a car with all the driver aids bar 1 gets a zero, yet an older car from 2017 has 5 stars but without the assists i know which one would be safer…

oh and the driver "aids" that are more distracting than not having them, they're the first thing i turn off when i get in my car.

• Thank you Pain Toad.

On the other Chinese car deal, I got like negative 20 for posting the same link.

• +6

Well there’s certainly no advanced safety features for the other people on the road who can’t see around these tanks.

This is a small SUV not a Tank.

• What are the service intervals? Is it 10k/12 months?

• The service intervals haven’t been released yet. But based of their other models, it’ll likely be every 15K/12 months.

https://cherymotor.com.au/owners/capped-price-service

• -1

Thanks for the info.. hopefully it's a step up from the 10K/12mo Omoda 5 & closer to the 15,000km like you suggest. The only reason we didn't pull the trigger on the Omoda.

• Its the same 1.5L turbo engine that’s in the Omoda 5 (from what I’ve read elsewhere) so guessing the service interval will also be the same.

• +1

You said the same about ANCAP ratings - “likely” to be 5 stars.
Is there a reason you are pushing this car so hard?

• +5

Probably a Chery car salesman

• Seems reasonable that cars built by the same company would be similar? Especially these days when they share so many common parts.

• +2

Probably based on there fact that Omoda 5 and Tiggo 7 both got rated ANCAP 5 stars.
https://www.ancap.com.au/safety-ratings/chery/omoda-5/b8a56a

Overall it seems like a great deal of car for the money. A couple of the early reviews are giving it a pretty good wrap

7 year unlimited K warranty/fixed price servicing/roadside assistance is also a nice addition.
My youngest is off to Uni next year, I am going to give him the wife's old MG ZS which has been pretty good in the 3 years we have owned it and upgrade the wife to the ultimate, she has always wanted a sunroof!

• -1

Moreso the number of driver assists on it should make it eligible.

• Probably works for them..

• Not sure why they are selling both this and the Omoda 5. They appear to be nearly identical cars (under the skin, at least).

• well just about every manufacturer loves to sell the same shit under with a different skin ontop to appeal to different price categories

Omoda looks like a tennis shoe to me

this thing at least looks 'normal'

i notice this has the same shit 108kW turbo 1.5 with 7 spd dct

BUT I mean you cant expect much for $25k these days

• I think it's a CVT not DCT

• Disappointed they didn't call "Ultimate" the "Pro Max" though

• -1

Next one will be Ultra

• +4

They could add some stripes and do a racetrack edition, call it the "Pro Laps"

• It might be worth putting in the post whether this is auto or manual.

• +2

you dont really need to ask that these days

a better question is whether its a cvt or dual clutch

its the latter

• +1

It's actually a CVT.

• Its CVT

• I genuinely don't think anyone makes/sells (in Australia) a manual passenger car anymore…

• Kind of ironic, as Chery's first cars that they sold in Australia were mostly manual only, without even the option of auto.

is the $3000 upgrade worth it

So many car options recently..id like to spend 15-20 k to get something decent and go halvies with someone

Brought half a car in Qld and it worked well sharing with my friend but obviously most people couldnt put up with that haha

It was second hand 3500 each and we got our money back after 6 months of use and selling it..got a good deal

Obviously new car would lose value the day you drive it

• +3

here's my take on this… if you have $30k and are buying it with someone who isnt a fan of chinese cars per se, then the risk is all on you

if the car blows up then YOU are the fool who recommended a chinese car

$30k buys a Mitsubishi ASX with 10yrs

that's a safe bet… its a terrible tragic car that happens to be reliable so you will get 10yrs of reliable but stodgey transport on it

"Nobody gets fired for buying IBM"

• +3

insane price

• -2

How is this a bargain?

It's cheap.

• "…boasts an efficiently powerful 1.5L engine…"
In what world is 108kW and 210 Nm powerful??? That's loosely comparable to a NA 2.0L which is the standard/ base engine offered in most cars weighing in at around 1.4 tonnes.

• +2

this sounds shit but i mean the YT reviews are out there:

the base 1.5 turbo does 0-100 in 8.5

the GT 1.6 model does it in 7.5

like in reality, do you think a small SUV needs more than this???

• -3

No, 0-100 km/h in 8.5 s is not fast (equivelant of powerful).

This goes beyond the usual marketing hype/ exaggeration to straight up BS.

• +3

whats your expect for 'performance' for a base $25k suv though?

this is car for young mooks to get to work, shopping

if you can do better for $25k new i'd love to hear it

• I'll better wait for Camry on water->hydrogen, thank you.

• +5

i guess this is if kmart sold a car

• +3

Yes, it has a silly name. It's Chinese. It probably has dubious build quality, but it's still a lot of car for the money.
I'm sure there are many who will be grateful.

• -3

For the same price, you can buy a decent proven 2nd hand Japanese / Korean, even German over this.

• +2

The older cars get, the more they cost you. Also, the second-hand market can be a lottery.

This comes with an 7-Year, unlimited kilometre warranty…….and is brand new. I should also mention the 7-Year Roadside Assistance and fixed-price servicing. So, that's 7 years of relatively worry-free motoring.

As I said, it's a lot of car for the money, and I am sure it will suit those with a limited budget, or the Cash-conscious.

• +3

China EV, i am still considering to buy it. China Combustion engine car. Is a big no… 1.5L Turbo with fuel consumption 7.3L/ 100km even my 2013 Honda Jazz fuel consumption is 6.6L/ 100km. Combustion engine car made in China still way behind their competitor

• +2

Its not all about economy though. The honda jazz makes 88kw and 127nm of torque. The tiggo 4 makes 108kw and 210nm of torque. Its going to be way more enjoyable to drive.

• +1

infact people will buy this chery purely for the enjoyment of motoring

• -6

Combustion has lesser chance to burn down the home. Who knows how many safety corners were cut to reach this price.
Will all those battery cells that you can’t even put out if they caught fire, I’d rather purchase from a reputable company.

• Nope if the EV is on the battery that doesn't burn.

• Tesla blade batteries are made by BYD.
Guess Japanese Eneloops are the way to go 😅

• +1

Yeah they should have just skip combustion and focus on EV 100%.

• +1

No idea about the quality of these but value for money is certainly on point not going to deny that fact.

But i cant get passed the name Chery - the spelling annoys me

'Tiggo 4 Pro Urban' i mean come on this is shocking its like a spam email you get that spelt tiger wrong. They need go fire whoever the hell named this the just call it Tiger 4 or something

• I read it as Turban Pro 4

• Is it pronounced cherry 🍒, or sheery (as in that old popstar Cher)

• -5

With their recently launched Tiggo 8, many customers have started experiencing serious issues with dual clutch transmission and gearbox. Some of them are also reporting terrible fuel economy even after using 95 fuel(which is minimum for that car). Checkout their Tiggo 8 owners Australia facebook page. Do not put your deposits down before doing some research.

• -5

Must be Tiggo 8 buyers who are regretting the decision and negged me for speaking the truth 🤣 neg all you want but the fact doesn't change. The DC transmission and gearbox failed on some people in 2-3 weeks of owning and all Chery did was tightened the solenoid and said good to go. Then it failed again on the customer. Buy this car if you live close to the dealership and love to visit there every weekend 😁

• +4

Good to see more sub 30k cars on the market.

• -4

in 5 years youd be lucky to get 5k for it

• +2

To be fair losing 4k per year on the first 5 years isn't ususual or even bad

• i suspect the person who only has $25k to spend hasnt got much choice here

its a stripped out suzuki swift or some shit

also would half you mugs even make it 2029 lol

• +3

Unfortunately Chinese brand ICE vehicles are second rate. You just have to look it up on multiple forums, including Chinese ones. They provide lots gadgets and talk up the warranty to mask the lack of R&D gone into the quality and engineering of the ICE.

If you are looking a buying a Chinese brand, only BYD has a decent reputation for their EV. They have spent a decent amount of R&D in developing a car that has a good reputation in multiple markets.

• No one cares mate, this is ozbargain, the biggest source of customers of Chinese cars in Australia.

• +1

I agree, shellsocked.
EV has very few moving parts. I would consider a Chinese EV . Far less complexity go wrong mechanically

• +3

Was hoping it was pre order for Tasmanian Cherries

• -4

Cheap Chinese cars ate junk!!!!!

• +1

Have they advertised delivery dates yet?

• Looking for this as well. Put down my e-mail for a pre-order since it seems commitment-free (for now?), will ask them about delivery dates. Great deal but the comments section is completely devoid of substance/relevance.

Also will be keeping an eye out of MG/etc tries to one-up this.

• +7

Reasons for neg votes on this deal so far:

I have a gut feeling this car is going to be unreliable. And the 7-year warranty doesn’t matter because I also have a gut feeling the company is about to collapse.

This entry-level car is not powerful enough for my needs.

I dislike SUVs.

Chinese EVs explode (even though this isn’t an EV).
