It's also a very poor quality phone. Would strongly recommend not buying Huawei

  • I bought a Huawei X5 (U8800) and thought it was the best value phone (at the time it was) however I've become increasingly frustrated at the lack of updates from Huawei - last official android for my phone (which isn't the PRO version) is 2.3.5 (and it's buggy).

Once I buy a new phone I'll be able to risk rooting my X5 and trying a non official rom but - I am not buying another Huawei phone due to their lack of support/updates, probably a good phone for those who don't expect updates. </rant>

    • I'm in the same boat and will also avoid Huawei for the same reason. There's an ICS ROM out there (Aurora) for the X5 but I consider a phone too 'key' to my everyday life to stick unofficial one-man-dev-team ROMs on. From here on in I think I'm just going Nexus/Samsung unless I want a dirt cheap phone for using when on holiday or something.

  • Doesn't stack up so well compared to the Defy+ for $99 from telstra. If only you could get a UMTS 900/2100 Defy for that price.

    • Great if you want GB only or on Telstra. Otherwise you'll have to spend time unlocking the phone.

This Huawei Y201 at Woolies isn't looking bad for $79 if it can be unlocked cheap: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/86106

      • Unlocking isn't the main problem with either phone, it's that they are only dual band UMTS, so being able to run an optus sim won't help (much).

Only GB officially, though this can be changed. The big problem is still the frequency support though.

        • It's a fairly trivial matter to change the baseband on the Defy+ once you've rooted it though. I have mine running on 900/2100 right now. I just had to root it, then did a soft unlock and baseband change to have it running on Optus.

    • no more defy+ from Telstra as far as I can see. Would be glad to be proved wrong though.

  • You can pick up the Huawei G300 for A$149 from Dick Smith. Slightly poorer processor and I think ICS is out already.

  • $189 from MobiCity with TYV10 coupon code.

    • Mobicity sells grey stock so there is no local manufacturers warranty

Some of you guys said avoid Huawei not because of the quality but software/firmware update?
So how about the quality? I am not too concern the Android version if it is ICS (of course is better if it is Jelly Bean).

One persistent problem with Huaweis (I have used the Ideos 8150, X1 and X3) is that occasionally I would lose the ability to make and receive calls. I would only be aware of this when I went to make a call. The number would dial but then the call would terminate immediately thereafter.

Rebooting, flushing the dalvik cache etc would solve the problem, but it would come back after a few days.

I am not too keen on going back to Huawei to be perfectly honest, although I was happy to buy their phones when they were so much cheaper than everyone else.

Nowadays, other makers are making equally compelling phones in the same price range.

      • I have the problem too, but I found the problem caused by the weak 3G signal. If you select "more"->"Mobile network"-> "Use only 2G networks" . Then your phone's signal will always nearly full and use 2G only can make your phone continue for more than 3 days.
Also always disable the WIFI too. it's very easy to enable/disable them and can save a lot of power.

    • Yes, it's ICS (Android 4.0). and I think the build quality is very well.

  • Anyone have thoughts compared to the Sony Sola for $179?

Looking at both of these and just wondered if there are big pros or cons…

    • The easy way to compare them is goto the dicksmith and play the two phones and choice the one you like.

  • I'm not too sure about the huawei but the solais great phone. Very good performance

  • sorry, deleted
